My New Mac 3.0 Quad Seems Kind Of Slow

Hi Everyone,
I've just upgraded from my Mac G5 Dual 2.7 (which I loved) to a new MacPro 3.0 Quad. I'm not finding that the newer machine is any faster (although I have not tested it yet). In fact, Ive even gotten an Audio Engine Dropout error when running Logic on the same songs that ran fine before. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks

Using Migration Assistant to install PPC programs is the most often cause. Did you upgrade or BTO with more than the stock 1GB RAM which would be very "limiting".
Some tests others have done - but there is also more overhead in some apps that try to use more cores, but have to shuffle code and data between cores which is inefficient.
Take a look at today's
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com
http://www.barefeats.com
If you weren't finding the 2.7DP to be slow or limiting, there are applications that will excel with Mac Pro, fewer yet that fully benefit from 8-cores. But running concurrently, yes.
You need to have 4GB in 4 x 1GB with 2GB on each Riser as a minimum though, and to get four-channel (two channel per Riser) 256-bit support. You might be best served with 4 x 2GB if you need 6GB or more. And the Mac Pro can seem more memory hungry than a comparable G5.

i just bought a new Mac, and i cant seem to update to Mountain Lion, any idea's as to why? also i can not seem to download pages from the app store, any idea's on why, please help!!

You need to describe more clearly what you are trying to do and how it is failing.
Was your mac new, or just new to you? What OS did it come with? Lion? Snow Leopard?
Have you already bought Mountain Lion? If so, are you using the same Apple ID that you used for your purchase?
What are you seeing in the App Store? Come to think of it, are in the MAC App Store? (not to be confused with the iTunes App Store!).
If you give answers to these questions we may be able to help!

  • Just setting up new mac mini however system seems stuck on Bluetooth at startup and not seeing new trackpad or keyboard both wireless?

My new mac mini seems stuck whilst launching for the first time - looking for bluetooth peripherals - they are a new trackpad and wireless keyboard - both in pair mode so I can't see what the issue is..Do I really need to find wired mouse and keyboard to set this up?

Hehehe... Yes, a freshly-booting Mac from the factory can get confused with all that wireless traffic. In the past I've been able to get new Macs to pair with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad by switching the keyboard/mouse/whatever off and then on again while the computer is attempting to find something to pair with. The computer will attempt pairing with the newly-activated device and otherwise pretty much ignore all the other Bluetooth chatter is sees.
That said, whenever I set up a Mac for someone, I always bring a USB keyboard and mouse with me. It makes the process faster and easier. I then set up their Bluetooth input devices later, using System Preferences.

  • I can't open pages because it tells me that I need a new program. I have 08 and 09 installed on my new Mac bookair but 08 seems to be the default.

I have a new mac book air and it shows that it has pages 08 and the newer version pages 09 installed, but it only opens in pages 08. Now pages tells me I need to update the progammbefore I can open pages again. Even documents that I have created only yesterday won't open anymore. Any ideas?

I bought the computer and pages 09 via the apple store online and both programs were on the computer when it came. Up to the error message I hadn't even checked which one of the pages program I was working with.

  • I have a new Mac Pro and it seems to get hot...why?

I'm new to Apple products and I have a MacBook Pro and it seems to get very hot.  Am I doing something wrong with it?

Stedman.....I did that and under the temps., it would change as I watched it.  This is what I read most often.  Not sure if this is what you meant:
    HD Macintosh    33
    CPU    48
    CPU Heatsink 4   1
    Enclosure Base    34
    Enclosure Base 2    34
    Enclosure Base 3     33
    CPU (again???)    43
    CPU Diode     23
Not sure if that's the info you asked for?  I've only had this several weeks and I notice it getting hot at times.
Also, when I plug in the batter charger, it changes back and forth orange/green....
I know I need serious help with this..I truly appreciate your reply. Jo

  • I would like to download iDVD to my new Mac.  Can't seem to find it anywhere.

I would like to download iDVD to my new iMac.  Does anybody know where I can get it?  I looked in the downloads and apps on the apple sites, but can only find updates to already existing applications.

It comes as part of iLife box set.  Apple retired iDVD for reasons only they know.  You won't find it as a stand-alone product on apple's website.  If you do get the box set, only install iDVD.  The versions on iPhoto, Garage Band are old.

  • Help with buying a new Mac Pro

    Hi all,
I'm currently in the market for a new Mac Pro, as I seem to be stretching the boundaries of what my MBP can do in a reasonable amount of time. After reading these forums for a while, I still have some questions/concerns about my needs that I hope someone can answer.
I will be using the Mac Pro for web development (CS4 and CS5 down the road), video editing on FCE, and possibly audio work in the future. I'm about to graduate college and am still somewhat unsure if I will be using more powerful software in the immediate future. One other thing, I tend to have a bunch of apps open at once (Mail, Safari, FF, VMWare, MSOffice, iCal, etc.), and I don't want to have to close them all out to get decent speeds when rendering video. I currently don't use any "Pro" apps (FCP/LogicPro), but I haven't ruled them out for future use.
Would I be better suited with the 2.66 Quad (possibly 2.93) or with a 2.26 Octo? I'm concerned the Quad would have a much shorter life with the 4 RAM slot limitation, but paying for the Octo and leaving a bunch of cores idle would not be ideal either. I'm planning on buying before SL release, because I want to be able to install it on my own terms.
    Any input appreciated,
    Ty

I think the quad has a lot of potential and even with 'only' 16GB RAM (4 x 4GB) you shouldn't be hurting.
Nothing you listed should be a significant bottleneck. And if that day comes, there will be equally more powerful bass level systems.
Most of the non-intense apps will only use a small small fraction of your resources. The 2.66 is nice and will throttle up or down as needed, and just surfing etc run @ 1.6GHz. iTunes for now is 'out of control' and buggy.
Q: you want to buy now also to use your student discount I assume.

  • White lines appear on videos since my new Mac Pro - Why?

    Hello,
    I'm the happy owner of a Mac Pro 2,7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5 / 64 gig RAM / 2X AMD FirePro D700 6144 Mo running on OS X 10.9.3 (13D65).
I'm using CC latest version but also Red Giant Magic Bullet LOOKS to color grade my videos (on an adjustment layer). I have 3 HDD (1 SSD in the computer with the programs + 1 external (Thunderbold) G-RAID for cache files + 1 external Pegasus R6 2 (Thunderbolt 2) for the footage).
Sometimes, when reading (but more often when exporting in Media Encoder) white lines appear on the video (see image below). Why?
Is that a Premiere problem? Is something going wrong with my Mac? I have already reinstalled everything from scratch but the problem remains...
I was working with the same programs on my previous iMac and I didn't have this problem.
    Any idea ?

Is it an Adobe or a Mac Pro 2013 related problem? Does everyone using the GPU acceleration have the same problem?
So far, it appears to be an issue with OS X 10.9.2 and up.  Some folks that are beta testing 10.9.4 have reported that the strange artifacts no longer appear while using Hardware mode, but a few folks are still having Premiere crashes with it.  My suspicion is that we're seeing two separate problems with Premiere on the new Mac Pro when using Hardware mode: 1) artifacts, lines, etc on exports and 2) application crashes.  Neither of these appear to happen when Pr and AME are put into Software mode.  Given the commonality of the problems (using GPUs on the new Mac Pro) some folks seem to think they're directly related.  My gut tells me they aren't.
The challenge for the folks at Adobe and other third party app developers is that the boys (and girls) in Cupertino are changing things within OS X a bit too quickly, for better, for worse.  Some of these changes are what I call "ninja patches" where they don't really explain what they're changing or why.  I strongly suspect that's what's going on here.  They sneaked something into OS X 10.9.2 and haven't un-sneaked it yet.  Folks are strongly encouraging Adobe to address this issue pronto, but if Cupertino keeps altering the guts of the OS, how can they?

  • Transferring iphoto to new mac

HI! So I knew I was getting a new macbook pro with OS X 10.9, so i backed up my old mac onto a harddrive with everything that was on it. Now I am looking to put my old iphoto library and itunes library onto my new mac, but I cant seem to figure out how to do it. Also it seems that my iphoto library is about 12.5 gb which seems HUGE???
any advice would be gladly appreciated!!

12.5 gigs is not a big iPhoto Library. Mine is more than 300.
Drag the Library to the Pictures Folder on the new Mac.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library you copied over.

  • Can't change font/column size in new .Mac Mail & 3-Pane option is a Pain!

My new .mac mail doesn't seem to allow changes in column width or in font size so it ends up cutting off the bottoms of some letters and cuts off all the entries in the 'From', 'Subject' and 'Date' columns. Also, it seems that because of this stubborn formatting, the "Action" button is not on the same line as the other buttons such as "Delete" or "Reply" etc. The "Action" button is on the next line and partially covers up the word "From" and the address of the first email in the column. Preferences doesn't seem to have anything for changing sizes or column widths.
Also, when I use the "3 Panes" option from the preferences in .mac mail I'm supposed to be able to compose a new email in the bottom pane but when I click on "New" to write a new email, it opens up a completely different window to compose the new email.
So can anyone help me with these two issues? I would really appreciate it. I liked the old email the way it was but I guess that's no longer an option. Thanks,
    Steve

I used the Migration Assistant to move data from my Time Machine to my new Mac.   Most data seems to have been transferred successfully but none of my iPhoto pictures have been transferred.
My Time Machine now shows the earliest available Back-up to be after the Migration Date.   My iPhoto pictures seem to have either been lost in the migration process or are locked in my Time Machine prior to the earliest back-up date now accessible.
Any advice on recovering my old iPhoto pictures would be greatly appreciated.

First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

  • New Mac mini won't recognize iPhone or iPad w/o cord

My new Mac Mini doesn't seem to want to sync with my iPad 2 or my iPhone 4s without plugging them into the mini with a cable. Why is this, and can I change some settings to make it recognize them without a cable?

Upgraded to Lion a few months ago, and work remotely from home using Timbuktu Pro which I've used for years.Have been using Lion for the past few months without problems. In the past few weeks if the remote computer, a mac mini  (at my office) is not accessed, the screen appears to be gray when viewing remotely and I cannot wake it up. Energy saver preferences are set to wake up with network access, never go to sleep, keyboard is an Apple USB as well as USB mouse. I had used a bluetooth mouse & thought that might be the issue, so I disconnected it at the end of the day although Bluetooth is still on. Tried disconnecting an external drive (USB) but that didn't make a difference. The only way it will wake up is if someone at the office physically clicks the mouse a few times, then it wakes up. I've tried sending a fax to the remote computer as the office fax machine is connected to the remote computer; the fax is received as it shows up in the Dropbox, but that doesn't wake the mac mini. Very puzzled as all worked well until a few weeks ago. Display has not been changed (DVI), have not added new peripherals although I do have a powered hub connected to the remote computer which I haven't tried disconnecting. Bottom line is that nothing has changed other than Lion upgrades. As so many people are having a problem, I suspect this is a Lion issue. The remote mac mini is approximately 2 years old. I upgraded the RAM about 6 weeks ago to 8 GB (Crucial) and haven't tested that, but it was working fine after the RAM upgraded until recently.

  • Snow Leopard Server on new Mac Pro

I'm trying to install SL Server on a new Mac Pro (dual quads, Radeon video, 6GB RAM) and half way through the installation I get a screen that looks like analog TV static.
    Anybody else seeing this?

    Here's what I've done:
    1. took machine out of box. (grin)
    2. Booted off full 10.6 Volume CD
    3. Partitioned drive with new name
    4. Did install. Got to the installing xx minutes remaining screen.
    5. Worked for 10 minutes then screen blanked.
    6. Moved mouse and the screen is pure static. Looks like an old TV not getting a signal.
    7. Swapped memory, same result. Added more memory, same result. Swapped all memory with new, same result.
    8. Reseated all cards, same result.
    9. Installed 10.5.6 from the disc that shipped with the machine.
    10. Ran all updates.
    11. Placed 10.6 server disc in drive. Launched it from within 10.5.
    12. The system rebooted normally.
    13. Started the install again, static at the same place.
I'm a bit stuck here. My xserves didn't do this.
