My new Mac was flawless until I inserted the Tiger disk

I bought this Mac a few months ago and have not had a single problem until I tried to install OSX 10.5.
I started the computer, inserted the disk and asked it to install the new OS. It rebooted then displayed the graphic about how to use the mouse, then the screen went grey. I have no experience installing OSX, so I waited a few hours, but the screen remained grey.
I gave up, turned the computer off and on, and this time I got past the mouse display and was able to see it start installing. When it finished installing, I got to the screen where it took my picture, then it froze. Another time, it seemed to install ok but then froze after playing the intro video.
...to cut a very long story short, I have installed/re-installed OSX many times (>10), but each time it locks up during the install or right after. I have wiped the hard drive each time, and I have let it run the consistency check on the disk. This computer was in pristine condition before all of this started, and I cannot image what to do next except try to re-install OSX 10.4 and pray that works.
Has anyone else had a similar nightmare? Is there any way to get a refund on 10.5?

Yes, the Leopard disk has a Window section with drivers for BC install of Windows. But that's a small portion of the disk. However, if you ignore that BC message on your PC, you should be able to use desktop explorer to view the contents and probably do a diskcheck on it. The disk should show up in the desktop explorer.
It may not be one of the dirty ones - it might be something else, but we can eliminate these things one at a time.

The new Mac's came with OS X Lion 10.7 and there are no boot disks.
Since it's so new, take it back to the Apple Store and let them deal with it.
If not you can hold Command and r (as in rotten) keys down and boot the computer.
You'll be presented with a several options, including one to reinstall OS X Lion provided you have a Apple ID, which means you have to use Safari in there to set one up. To do that you need to set up a email account with Google or Yahoo. Once you get the ID, then you can download Lion and reinstall it.
It's so stupid not having a copy of the OS on hand to perform your own repairs.
Of course Apple will be happy to sell you a $69 Lion USB stick.
Like I said, take it back to the store, and try to get your money back, that will force them to think about just giving you a replacement machine that works.
Lion doesn't work really but it can be acceptable until the patches get released.

No, not paired to anything else, fresh out the box connected to the mac mini I bought at the same time, never been paired with anything else.

Multiple desktops and dual screens really aren't meant to work together. Apple came up with this multiple desltops feature and never really thought about users that use a dual monitor setup. So use either multiple desktops OR dual monitors but not both. Also don't try to use any App in Full Screen Mode as that doesn't work with dual screen setups either.

For iTunes purchases only..
Connect the iPhone to your Mac, launch iTunes.
If you haven't done this yet, go to the iTunes menu bar click Store / Authorize This Computer
Now from the iTunes menu bar again, click File / Transfer Purchases From...

I am talking about the Ver 3 download link that came with the purchase email.
That link is no longer available. Use "Migration Assistant" to copy your Applications from your old mac to the new Mac, then immediately run software update. Aperture Version 3.2 will not run on your new mac with Mavericks, you will have to Upgrade to version 3.4.5 at least - you can download this update from the Support page: Aperture 3.4.5
Then launch Aperture and enter your registration key and try now too update from version 3.4.5 to 3.5 from the AppStore. The AppStore will change your Aperture registration to an AppStore version, so you will able to reinstall by downloading from the AppSTore in future.
If you want transfer only Aperture and no other applications, do it manually: You will have to copy not only the application but folders from the libraries as well:
/Applications/Aperture.app
/Library/Application Support/Aperture/
~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/

I have transferred Word files from my PC to my new Mac Book Pro and some of the files cannot be clicked on and opened or even deleted because you can't select them. There are a variety of document files and pdfs etc. Any ideas ?

Have you tried looking at the file in list view in the Finder and seeing if they actually occupy any space? i.e. "Size"? There shouldn't be any problem with Office documents, Adobe pdfs, etc. If they migrated properly - did you use Migration Assistant or some similar utility?

The iphone is not a backup/storage device. The sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Have you failed to do this?

iCloud is not the way to do this. You should use Migration Assistant - with this you can transfer your complete User folder from the old Mac including preferences and logins. You will need to connect the two with FireWire or USB depending on the models.
Ideally you should do this before you set up the new Mac - if you create a user account with the same name than the Migration will have to give the migrated user folder a different name. When you first switch on the new Mac it should ask you if you want to transfer your data, and give you instructions.

In iOS 7 you cannot transfer photos and videos anymore to or from your iPad as if it were a USB device.

You were given wrong information. The copy of Lion on your new Mac is licensed only for that machine, and you can't copy it to another one. If you buy the Lion upgrade from the App Store, you can install it on all the Macs you personally own.
