My new macbk pro takes over 8 min to boot up

It sits on the grey screen with the apple icon and progress wheel spinning, which I timed this morning. I never had this performance issue with my last mac, which had less ram,  so I'm assuming it is something with the Mavericks OS. I looked at the settings, but don't see anything I can tweak to improve this start time. I can't really tell what applications may be opening at boot to slow it down.  I am a photographer and have a number of folders with large data files on my desktop. This was never a problem before but I could remove them if it is now. I have no other programs on my desktop. It's not a critical mass issue, but certainly is annoying.

  • Lenovo H420 Desktop takes over 5 mins to boot up

    Hi,
We have a Lenovo H420 desktop that takes over 3 mins to boot up. After you switch it on, the monitor displays a black screen with 'Lenovo' in white writing and remains with this screen for minutes on end seemingly doing nothing (hard drive  cannot be heard working and it's activity light doesn't flash). After about 3 minutes Windows 7 suddenly loads in a matter of seconds.
Any ideas what is wrong? Is this normal?
We've only had this computer for about 3 months and it has been doing it since we bought it. We reset the computer back to its factory settings but that hasn't changed anything. Bios doesn't seem to be accessible as no startup screen saying press del for setup etc shows.
Kaspersky and Malwarebytes doesn't show any nasties.
    Thanks

  • Import contacts from old address book on MacBkPro Snow Leopard into new MacBk Pro Lion

How do I import my contacts from old address book on MacBkPro Snow Leopard into new MacBk Pro Lion (on MacBkPro Retina). I can see the "AddressBook" file on the old HD (extracted from old machine--which died) and have a copy of that file on to desktop of new machine. [Copied from old HD: Users/home/Library/Application Support/Address Book]. There is an Address Book in the same location on the "MacIntosh HD" of the new machine, but some of the files in that (new) folder have different names. Risky to simply over-ride this. What should I do?

My mistake - my groups are there! They transferred perfectly. Still getting used to my wonderful new machine. Sorry to bother you!

  • IPod Touch takes over an hour to boot up??

Every time I turn off (or run out of battery power) my iPod Touch, it takes over an hour or two to boot up.  It will cycle through with the apple and a blank screen, then white out and start all over again.  If it happens while connected to iTunes, it will show up as loading in iTunes for a while, then appear as connected but on the5 Summary Tab, the bar at the bottom of the screen shows the iPod as full with "Other" when it should be a mix of apps, music, etc.
I have updated to the latest iOS, I tried resetting a while back, but nothing has changed.
It does seem to take less time to boot up when not plugged into a charger or to iTunes, but it still takes over 45 mins at least.
    What is wrong???

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Can I install an earlier version of Bootcamp on my new Macbook Pro so that I can dual boot to XP rather than Windows 7??

I have a new MacBook Pro and would like to dual boot ot XP. Is this possible using the Bootcamp version that comes with it? I wonder whether Apple have XP drivers for the new MacBook or if they have only developed those for Windows 7? Thanks in advance!

Just install XP into a Virtual Machine. Like VMware Fusion, Parallels or Virtual Box.
Then you can run both OS X & XP at the same time. No need to dual boot with XP as it doesn't use that many rsources and runs fine in a VM.

  • Preparing a new SSD to take over as main boot drive

    Hi,
I've just installed a new SSD in my 2011 Mac mini, and my aim is to make sure I set it up properly first time around to take over boot duties from the default 500GB HDD.  The SSD is currently completely blank, without even a partition scheme.
    I ran:
    diskutil list
in the Terminal and noticed that the 500GB HDD has 5 partitions:
    1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB
    2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            80.0 GB
    3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB
    4:                  Apple_HFS Internal Storage        337.8 GB
5:       Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP                81.2 GB
If the SSD is going to take over the main duties of the 500GB HDD, it looks like I'm going to have to endow it with the following partitions:
    1:                        EFI
    2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD
    3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD
I'm not sure how to properly go about giving the new SSD the EFI partition or Recovery HD.  The main OS I can clone quite easily with Carbon Copy Cloner, however.  Can someone advise?
The second thing is that I want to encrypt the new OS partition.  I've done this before on another drive, and follow the less-common (though equally supported method) of encrypting the new volume as HFS (Encrypted) before copying the old OS onto it.  The main bonus of this on an SSD is that it doesn't interfere with the SSD's drive maintenance routines; copying the OS onto an unencrypted volume and then turning on FileVault 2, on the other hand, does.  The other benefit is that I have a unique boot password that takes me to the Login screen, as opposed to using a user's password that then boots me straight into that user's account.
The problem is that I want to use Boot Camp later, but I don't know how that works if the main OS X partition is encrypted.  Can the Boot Camp Assistant still shrink the drive and create the Windows partition as needed?
In the end, the plan is to have the following:
    SSD:
    1:          EFI
    2:          Boot Recovery HD
    3:          OS X (HFS Encrypted)
    4:          Windows 7 (NTFS)
    HDD:
    1:          Windows Swap (NTFS)
2:          OS X Extra Storage (HFS)
    Thanks!

I think the easy (maybe only) way to get the recovery partition is to format as a single partition, and install (Mountain) Lion on it.
Here is what I plan to do in a similar situation (MBP in my case), except that I DON'T want to encrypt - I am not sure how that would fit in the plan, but here goes:
    1) partition SSD as one partition, GUID partition table;
    2) install ML; in the appropriate step of the installation, select "I want to transfer from another mac or hard disk";
    3) when prompted, select the internal HD as the source to import from. This will Migrate everything, or maybe just users and documents (I haven't decided yet)
    4) use Bootcamp assistant to create the win partition and subsequently install win 7  (this one I probably won't do, but I am not sure)
    5) Reformat the HD as desired

  • MAC OS 10.6.8 Firefox 6.0.2 Any new window opening takes over a minute to happen. Once open all is fine. New tabs open immediately. Only on new windows is there this delay. This only happens on FF, not on Sarari, Chrome, Opera. - stevehorn@websentia.us

Opening FF for the first time and when any additional, new window is opened, it takes over 60 seconds for the window to appear. This happens after reboot and repair permissions in Disc Utilities on reboot (from installation disc). Once window appears, all works fine. New tabs appear instantly. New, added windows still take the 60+ seconds to appear even with current window remaining open. No other browsers or applications behave this way.

Not sure if this is exactly the same as the other reported problems.
But creating a new (via command N or via menu selection) window creates a long thin nearly zero width but full height window. Selecting the window via the window menu and zooming brings it up at full size.
I tried turning off all add-ons and things seemed to work but then stopped working again (sorry can't find a consistent set of symptoms here).

  • Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

There is no license required for iWeb.  Just do a Wyodor suggested and you'll be ready to go. If you're running Lion however, consider the following:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Brand New Mac Pro takes 1Min 20 to boot

Hi people, just got this brand new Mac Pro, was a dream to get, however first one i received i had to send back as it had a faulty hard drive bay which didnt read the disks. I then received this replacement and this second machine had to have the airport card replaced as it was faulty. I also notice that it takes 1min 20seconds to boot to login screen. It is a brand new 3.0 8 Core with 10GB Ram. My macbook pro boots in less than 20 seconds. Is this normal of the Mac Pro?

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear.
First of all, I agree with everything in your post. I just wanted to know why you said "The amount of RAM has nothing to do with how slow or fast the system boots." You see, I have the same problem on my iMac, it occurred right after I installed extra memory. The boot time almost doubled. The mac was a few days old so I assumed it was because of the RAM. But if you are right, my assumption was wrong and I have to look to other options. But I was just wondering, how do you know? That's why I asked you to explain your answer.
Second, the PS was back on topic and not in reply for your answer. For example, a few months ago, one of our macs had the same problem and it was fixed after we removed all the extra fonts the operator had installed.

  • I just updated to the newest Firefox 9.0.1 and now I get pop up ads as a new tab that takes over my web session. Firefox also crashes my whole computer and restarts it. I am running Windows XP Pro.

Pop Ad tabs include ad, when I close it asks if I'm sure I want to leave the page. I say yes and then there is another survey ad that says I may have won something. This whole process requires at least 4 denials before I can get the page to close.
Periodically my computer will freeze and restart when I am using Firefox.

    Sounds like Malware.

  • Itunes shuts off new MACbook pro (2011) after 15 min

I have a new 2011 Macbook pro (May 2011). I have set all time-outs (screen saver, economy modes) to "never" in the account preferences and the computer ought not to shut off ever (unless the battery is empty).
This has helped none: when playing itunes radio on the battery (I have not checked whether this also happens with the power line connected), the computer shuts down the user account and I need to log back into my account  and restart itunes etc. This complete shut down occurs about every 15 minutes. Every 15 minutes (unless I am active on the computer, of course). Every 15 minutes or so.
[I have found a similar complaint for MACbook pros from 2007 3rd generation here, but this is 2011 ...]
In the office I have a MAC PRO workstation and it plays the same station after I return from class, or if  I do not shut itunes down  overnight it still plays the next day, each time with the screen having gone to sleeep etc and with me having to log back into the computer.
    Any advice? similar problems?

    Hi,
I've noticed similar behavior - specifically with the new 2011 MacBook Pro 13 and 17" models (tested) on Cisco infrastructure - using a 1252 and 3500i/e series APs running in dual-band mode, with 5GHz preferred. I've seen the transfer rates when in close proximity to the AP move between 72mbit and 243 - occasionally 300. My 2010 system in the same position is a solid, dependable 300.
They did modify the wireless chipset in the new 2011 MacBook Pros to replace it with a true 3x3 802.11n device. Cisco have long praised the Broadcom chipsets so I will see if their wireless team can advise me on what this new gear is capable of.
I currently look after a very large deployment of wireless LAN equipment so my wireless performance is absolutely critical to my work - the 2010 system was a godsend and a testament to how wireless devices should be built. It looks to me like this could be a software issue so I only hope Apple resolves this ASAP. I'll hang on to my 2010 system for now...

  • Just got my new macbk pro 15". But the SDHC does not want to open. Need to get my pictures. Can someone help?

Someone help please... SDHC is not opening up in my macbook pro. Any advise?.

    Hi..
Which SD card formats work in the SD card slot?
Cards that conform to the SD 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x standards should work. The SD card slot can use cards that are Standard SD (Secure Digital) 4 MB to 2 GB, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC  (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) 4G B to 2 TB. MMC can also be used in this slot. MiniSD, MicroSD, and higher density formats like MiniSDHC and MicroSDHC can also work with the use of "passive" adapters that conform to the width and thickness specifications listed above."
