My new MacBook Pro does not shut down

Hello,
please help. I have a brand new computer - MacBook pro - 2.2 GHz, Intel Core i7, Mac OS X 10.6.7. When I bought it, I followed the onscreen instructions and "transferred" my old computer, 4 year old MacBook, onto the new one (my accounts, with all the documents, preferences, etc). Now, for some time, before getting my new computer, I had been experiencing problems on my old one: namely, it was not shutting down and I had to "force" it by pressing the switch. I should have known better than transferring the old comp's settings and accounts onto the new one. I didn't and now my new computer is also not shutting down. Does anyone know how to find where the problem is and how to eliminate it? Do I have to backup all, erase, and reinstall everything or is there a less drastic way to cure my afflicted computer?
Thank you!
P.

Hi,
running the activity monitor and select System Processes, set the window to see allrunning processes and sort by CPU usage, close all applications that are using and try to shut down your Mac, then identifies what the process that consumes more CPU percentage.

  • New Macbook Pro will not shut down.

    Hi,
So I just got a new Macbook Pro four days ago from the Apple store and I'm already running into a little bit of trouble, that being my macbook will not shut down. Once I open the shut down window, the normal countdown that comes with it usually will not appear and I am incapable of clicking the shut down button. I have not downloaded anything onto my mac besides Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flashplayer, and a pdf document of my receipt from the apple store. I have burned some of my music CDs into itunes and browsed the web (nothing fishy; just some shopping, movie streaming from netflix and youtube, and reading articles online published by universities). Should I take the computer to the Apple store or is this something I can fix on my own?
    Thanks so much

If I were you I'd take it back to the Apple store and let someone at the Genius Bar take a look at it. The worst case is you made an extra trip, but at least this way you can exchange it immediately if there's a problem. You only have a 14 day window for this, might as well take advantage of it.
The only other thing I can suggest is to open the Force Quit option from the Apple icon in the upper left corner. See if there are any apps that show Not Responding. If there are any like that, force quit them then try to shut down.

  • New i7 Macbook Pro does not shut down with Nokia Internet Modem CS-15

    Hello everyone!
It is unfortunate that my first post here is regarding a problem! I am completely new to the whole Apple Mac thing but decided to buy a new 17 inch i7 Macbook Pro. Unfortunately a problem occurred when using the Nokia Internet Stick (modem) CS-15 where it stays on the blue screen with the spinning logo when trying to shut down. Heres what happened:
After installing and connecting the modem, I used the intenet for a while. Then I folded the display panel downwards to put the computer to sleep mode (I didn't disconnect the modem) after a moment I pushed the display up again to bring the computer out of sleep mode and tried to quit the Nokia programme. It wouldn't so I used 'force quit'. It was not responding before. Once all programmes were closed, I shut down the computer but it just stays on the blue screen with the spinning logo. I can manually hold down the power button but i want to know why it won't shut down! I also noticed the Nokia Modem was still on with a flashing blue LED.
I feel that the modem might be stopping the MBP from shutting down. I have tried to quit the programme before without putting the computer in sleep mode but sometimes it doesn't work and i need to use force quit.
Does anyone know why this is happening? I haven't installed anything on the computer or have background programmes running - just seems to be a problem with USB devices stopping it from shutting down properly.
I have also tried to pull the Modem out physically after quitting the programme but it still hangs on the blue screen!
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you!

  • MacBook Pro will not shut down

A principal at my district has a MacBook Pro 15-inch Early 2008 (2.4/2X1GB/200-5400/256VRAM/AG) running OS 10.5.8 that will not shut down. When shut down is chosen, the computer restarts instead of shutting down. It does not matter how shut down is chosen, whether it is from pull down menu, keyboard command, click on shutdown in the login menu, etc. I have tried resetting PRAM, SMC, starting up from a known good system, and run diagnostics applications (which turn up no problems). The only way to get the machine to tunr off is hold the power button down until it shuts off.
The user complains it also gets very hot when he leaves it sitting open in sleep mode. I have not observed that particular symptom. It also tend to run down the battery faster than it should (battery check shows it to have 80+% of it's original capacity.) But Activity Monitor does not show any unusual activity.
Any suggestions what I can try next to figure this thing out?
    Thanks.

On occassion (like tonight) my MacBook Pro will not
shut down - even when I attempt to force quit. Any
    suggestions?
Happens here too, but very rarely. In my case it mostly happens late at night when OS X is supposed to run some internal maintenance jobs, maybe some of them do not allow a shutdown?
Does holding the power button down for approx. 10 seconds work? If yes, then I would not worry about it. If no, there is something seriously odd and I would report it to AppleCare.
    Cheers,
    Uwe

  • New Macbook Pro does not start up after updating...HELP!!!

    Hi,
My new Macbook Pro does not start up after it got updated. The first time I used it, it was perfect. I updated it and restarted it when it told me to but it doesn't boot. It shows an apple and a spinning circle when it turns on but that's it.
    Can somebody please help me?

You should probably post your question in the MacBook Pro discussions:

Have you tried holding the power button down for several seconds? I would try the force quit as mentioned earlier first, or go to the Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities and try force quit there.

MacBook Pro will not shut down properly. Gray screen appears with spinning gear but will not shut down completely.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or shutdown failure, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Purchased Lightroom software on disc, new MacBook Pro does not have a disc drawer.

Purchased Lightroom software on disc, new MacBook Pro does not have a disc drawer. Have already opened box. Searched online and someone suggested downloading the LR trial, and set up Cloud, then can enter the serial number to complete the purchase. Which is what I did, but the serial number is being rejected.

Ok, maybe what they’re calling Creative Cloud is merely your Adobe ID, an e-mail and password to login with.  The LR5 6 update link is probably what you want to download—all updates are downloads, anyway, so there’s no need to have a disc reader as long as you have internet and the serial number.
Here is the LR 5.6 update for a Mac:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5822
Another issue might be that what you think is a serial number is a redemption code that needs to be converted to a serial number using this website:  http://www.adobe.com/go/getserial   A clue that you have a redemption code is that it has letters and numbers.  A serial number is just numbers and the first few are 1160-something.

  • My macbook pro will not shut down

    Hello,
please help.
    Thank you!
    P.

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu and close Outlook from there.

  • MacBook Pro will not shut down correctly

When I try to shut down my MacBook Pro, it'll shut down then start up again. However, when the login comes up after it has started up, I press "Shut Down" and it works perfectly. Why is it doing this?

Pages died today. Just downloaded the latest update 2 days ago. Last night shutting down my very new MacBook Pro Retina, Pages stopped shut down. Today Pages will not open, all my Pages docs cannot open. Help please! Anybody have a fix?

You probably have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 in your Applications folder, will open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them. It can not open Pages '08 files.
Pages '08/'09 in your Applications/iWork folder which can not open Pages 5 files.
When you were shutting down you probably had an unsaved document open.
You probably are opening the wrong versions of Pages to open the wrong document format.
Pages 5 has had over 90+ features removed.
Most users are going back to Pages 09 whilst Apple sorts this out.
