My new Macbook Pro only lasts 3 hours.

I bought a new 15-inch Macbook Pro in late June when the newer versions with better battery life were introduced. Unfortunately, my battery always lasts less than 3 hours. I lowered most of the default energy preferences (such as dimming the screen enormously) and turned off my wireless port, but it still only lasts 3 hours.
Did I accidentally receive an old Macbook Pro or what? Is the 7 hour battery life just a great exaggeration?

Well... it would be easy enough to tell if you have the older version. If the bottom of your case is a single piece of aluminum, you have the new one... if it is split in the middle with a latch (for the removable battery) you would have the old one. Apple, like everyone else, gives a "best case" scenario when it comes to battery life. Dimming the display helps... but the way you use your machine will have a great impact as well. If you are doing things that require more processing power, you will eat away at your charge faster. Also... does it actually last three hours or are you going by the estimate provided in the menu bar? The estimate is calculated by the load in your system at any given time. If you just have your machine on... but not doing anything, the estimate will be much longer than if you're running applications. To get a better idea of your usage, you should view the percentage remaining (vs. the time). The percentage remaining is the actual percentage remaining vs. an estimate.

  • My brand new MacBook pro charged last night but now won't turn on, help!

My MacBook pro charged fully last night but now won't turn on, the green battery light is flashing but no matter how long I hold the power button it won't start. I just bought the MacBook in January.

Well then it isn't really Brand New. Brand New kinda means you bought it yesteerday or 2-3 days ago.
In any event youy need to take it to Apple and have them fix or replace it.
You have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix.

  • Heat and sleep problem with my new Macbook Pro

Basically I noticed with my new MBP the computer can become very hot and the fan gets very loud after about ~2 hours of working in Maya.. which I guess might be reasonable.
However, my main concern is, even when I close the lid of the MBP, the heat seems to stay (I just closed it for about 30 minutes, and it's still as hot as it was before I closed it).
I'm working on High Performance.. maybe my macbook isn't sleeping when I close it?
I have noticed (I THINK) that the white apple on the outside glows sometimes randomly even when I have the lid closed, but I'm not completely sure.
    Anyone else have this problem?

Hi yes I've had/got the same problem. Received my new MacBook Pro only last week and this has happened twice. The machine gets so hot I can't even touch the battery area!!!! It only seems to happen with the power connected and when the lid is closed. Fortunately the Mac was on my wooden desk or it might have melted plastic!
The Mac cooled down after unplugging from power supply, but wow it was hot....and noisy!
The only way to get the Mac back was to either press the power/off until it shut down, or take the battery out - after it cooled down.
Reported the problem to Mac Support immediately, but no response.
THIS IS DANGEROUS!!! Be careful, I don't know what would happen if it was left overnight for example - could easily cause a FIRE!!!!!

  • Why I still have to pay for iWork on my new MacBook Pro ?

I bought a new MacBook Pro in last Friday ,25 October. But there is no iWork pre-installed in the system.(ps. The system is OS X 10.9 now) When I try to install iWork from App Store ,,it shows I still have to pay for $19.99 for Numbers. Could u tell what happened and what should I do?

You shouldn't have to pay.  Try these steps to solve your problem - apparently you aren't the only one with this issue:

  • New MacBook Pro 7.1 doesn't install final cut pro studio

I bought a new macbook pro 13' last week. When I tried to install the final cut pro studio, an alert window popped up saying that my mackbook doesn't have the required hardware to support the final cut pro. Can any one please help me on that?

FCP 5.0.4 is not compatible with Intel Macs.
If you have that version, then you need to upgrade to FC Studio 3, which is compatible with Intel Macs.
FCP 5.1.4 is compatible, but you'll need at least FCP 6.0.x to run with Snow Leopard.
Expect to pay about $250.00 for the upgrade if you shop.

  • Update to Mac OS X 10.5 - just bought my new MacBook Pro C2D - update free?

    dear forum,
is there a cheap update path to 10.5 ? got
my new macbook pro C2D some hours and
thought about getting 10.5 update free of
charge. in the early years there where coupons
when you got a new mac.
    thank you for some statements
    torres

Apple has not historically offered a cheap upgrade path for new operating systems unless you bought a new Mac in the time period between them announcing a release date for the new system and the date of that announcement. In the past, times have varied between one and two weeks.
In your case I would not count on it. I would plan on paying the full price, which has not been announced yet either.

How do i enlarge the overall font size on my new macbook pro

Only by dropping the resolution in the System Preferences which has limited results.
With Safari there isn't a whole lot of choices, just a increase in the text on web pages which doesn't hold and tends to distort pages.
A better option for surfing is Firefox and the Add-ons: NoSquint and Theme Font & Size Changer.
NoSquint puts two zoom in/out buttons on the toolbar, you can set a global whole web page increase (not just type) and best of all it remembers that zoom setting for that site forever (unless you clear it out)
Now the other Add-on: Theme Font & Size Changer, allows you to increase the font size of Firefox itself, so the text buttons, google search bar and URL bar is all at a increased font size, making it easier to read.
On my 17" I got Firefox font size set at a 24 pt and web pages globally set of a defualt zoom of 170%, which appears to me to be twice the size of the type in OS X.
I also have a deep blue Firefox "persona" that colors the toolbar area, with white type the contrast makes it easier to read for me as well.

  • HT1338 I bought a Macbook pro 15" last week.

I bought a new Macbook Pro 15" last week... Upgrading from a macbook 13".. Loving it, But... I have an external hard drive that contains all my music and movies as not to overload my macbook Pro's hd.. But is can no longer access the external hd. it could access it for a few days and now nothing.. I really don't want to reformatt my exteral hd... Someone please help me..

Do you see your HDD in the Finder sidebar? You can also check Disk Utility (located in Applications> Utilities folder). If you see the HDD greyed out it means that it has failed and it needs to be replaced. You can also check if your USB cable is in good condition. I had an issue where one of my external HDDs did not showed on my Mac and PC, the issue ended being a damaged USB cable.
    Hope this information helps!

  • New Macbook Pro Battery Not Fully Chargin

  • New MacBook Pro Battery Only last 2:30 hours...

    Hello,
I bought my new macbook pro in november and the battery was fine. It lasted 5 hours. But now, when I fully charge it, it only says that my battery will last 2:30...
I happened all of a sudden. What can I do? I tried to re-calibrate it by fully uncharge it and then fully charge it...
    Any tips?
    Thank you!
    John

Did you follow the steps in this linked kbase article, including the 2 hour wait on AC power and the 5 hour wait after forced sleep?
It would help if you post your Battery Information from System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info > Power) - the relevant lines are Full Charge Capacity, Cycle Count, and Condition.
Finally, check for 'runaway' processes using a lot of CPU power - in Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU tab, click the popup to Show: Active Processes then click the CPU column header to sort by usage. Is there anything using a lot of power?

  • I can't open iTunes on my brand new Mac!I am getting the message that I am exceeding my limit of 5 computers! Huh, I only have two desktops and two laptops (not counting my new MacBook Pro). I do have an old (discarded) laptop that had iTunes! Help!!

Hi! I have a new MacBook Pro, but I haven't been able to put iTunes on it even though I have used it for years on my iPhone, iPad, and two Windows desktops and two Windows laptops. I keep getting the message that "I am exceeding my iTunes account limit of 5 computers (not counting my iPhone and iPad, which are explicitly excluded from the count according to the message)". As anyone can see, I only have 4 computers, so I should not have any problems with installing iTunes, but this same message says that I need to deauthorize at least one computer or maybe I have extra authorizations on a computer.
I can't even find a list or map of the computers on my iTunes account! Please, somebody help ASAP!!!!! Thanks!!!!!

  • HT1414 having bought a new MacBook, I wanted to Sync my iPhone4 to it, but it insists the only method to do so is to "Erase and Sync" or "Cancel" which leaves no option to just use iTunes on the new MacBook Pro - how annoying is that???

I have had the iphone4 for 2 years now and I bought a new MacBook Pro, opened iTunes and it knew I already had other machines with iTunes sync'ed with it but it still insisted on offering one option or sync'ing with new MacBook - "Erase and Sync", which means deleting EVERYTHING on the iphone. What if I want my iPhone to dictate and get iTunes on the Macbook to match up with the iPhone??? Or at least get iTunes to relate to what my iTunes account obviously has on it and update that way. Come on Apple, as per usual, very pretty but not very practical!!!

You can only sync everything with your one syncing computer/iTunes library. Yu can:
    - Make this your syncing computer by:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
    - Use the manual method to copy music and videos from any computer/iTunes library to the iPod. See the manual method included here:
