My new macbook pro seems to be acting strange. Maybe something is turned on that I do not know about?
I shut the lid, the brightness went all the way down and also when I turned it on after a shutdown, the display was set to a custom screen size, similar to the size of a TV's widescreen feature. Any ideas what is going on?

I have a Canon Vixia HV30 and would like to know if I can transfer video from it to a new MacBook Pro? The camcorder has a HDV/DV output. Is that compatible with firewire?

How do I back up the calendar and contacts from my iPhone5 to my new macbook pro(10.8.3)? I have backed up the phone, but it does not transfer the calendar or the contacts. If I check them in the sync area and then back up the phone again will they transfer or be erased? I am a bit gun shy since my previous macbook pro committed suicide and I lost a ton of info there.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer.

Started the transfer process from my old MacBook to a new MacBook pro using Migration assistant 12 hours ago. The screen says transferring your information. Moving about 270 GB using an Ethernet cable directly connected. Is this normal?
You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

New MacBook Pro App Migration results in strange icons
I recently got a new MacBook Pro and went through the automatic Migration Assistant process to transfer info off my Power Mac G5.
1. When it was all over, several of the icons in the dock were replaced with question marks. I figured that was because the apps in question were PPC and not intel/universal. So, I just deleted them. No big deal.
2. Then I noticed several Palm folders dating from several years ago relating to a now discarded Palm PDA. I deleted those files, but the trash won't empty, stating that "the operation cannot be completed because the item 'localized.rsrc' is in use. The message repeats about four times with press of the continue button. When I look in the trash, I see two files - Palm Desktop and Palm Desktop 4.1. I have rebooted and tried everything I know to delete the files, but no luck.
3. Photoshop 7.0 was written for PPC but runs in some kind of emulation. Every folder now has an icon to the right of the search field. The icon is a blue electrical plug with the words "plug in" at the bottom. If I hold the cursor over the icon, a hint comes up with a path direction to the "Power PC Accelerator". If I double click on the icon, PS7 opens with some error messages that certain setup files are missing. However, the app will run.
I would appreciate any help with these problems.I have questions 1 and 2 answered. PPC only software I just deleted. On emptying the trash I got help from and Apple tech. I will post it here for anyone needing to know.
If you have something in the trash that will not delete - in my case an old system resource from a Palm Pilot, drag it out of the trash and rename it REMOVE.rtf. Then open TEXTEDIT and create and save a blank file named REMOVE.rtf. It will overwrite the other file, basically destroying it. The new REMOVE.rtf file can then be deleted normally.
On the third issue - the Photoshop Plug In icon sitting next to the search field in every folder heading. I was able to delete the Power PC Accelerator file that was the source of the icon in the header, using the above technique, but now the icon is replaced by a question mark in the same place. Maybe I am 1/2 step ahead. -
I am planning to replace my 3+ year old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro, Retina display... I have been told by "chat" on the Apple site that I can transfer my data wirelessly... on my network.. Is is a good option? I don't want to invest in cables if I can help it... since the old machine has firewire and the new one has thunderbolt! Will the wireless transfer take forever... as in 30-50 hours??? I've been hearing these horror stories...

When switching to my new MacBook Pro, it will not let me display the titles of the icons as it has in my other Macbooks. In my new Macbook it will either:
a) cut off the title and inssert three dots
For example,
"Graduate School Info" will become "Gradua..nfo"
OR
b) it will cut off the word and put it underneath
For example,
"Publications" will become
"Publicatio
ns"
I am not sure how to change the settings so that it can allow more room to display the titles of the icons/folders the way I would like them to be displayed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Best,
KMThe best you can do is highlite a file on your Desktop. Finder>View>show view options>
and increase your Grid Size to MAX. -
I have a new MacBook Pro. I keep getting the message "Mail would like to use your keychain "login". How can I make this stop? I have run the keychain repair utility.
Hi,
With the Finder as the Front app go to the Go Menu > GO to Folder.
Copy and Paste the bold text below into the text field
~/Library/Keychains
Highlight the Keychain.
Use the CMD + i Keys together (Keystrokes for Get Info from the File Menu)
In the Info Panel that appears check the Ownership and Permission bit at the bottom.
Example Pic
Unlock Padlock
Check your Shortmname Appears (the (Me) one).
Open the Cogwheel icon
If it is Greyed Out to "Make "Shortname (Me)" owner then you are the Owner.
Check you have Read and Write Permissions.
You may need to check the Ownership and Permission on the ~/Library itself (you can do the same Get Info on Folders as well as Files)
If you don't Own it then, when you have changed that also Apply to Contents.

I have an old black MacBook (2006) and want to migrate to my new MacBook pro i7. The migration assistant offered me the prospect of migrating via wifi. Stated at 108 hours to transfer about 400 gig. Now revised down to 85 hours. Why is this so so so long?? Is there a faster way? What happens if I cancel now. Is there a way to cancel? As there is no cancel button....
Ay suggestion sighing the next 80 hours very much appreciated. The 2006 MacBook has firewire. Use a cable like this. Boot the '06 with the T key held down until you see the Firewire icon. Connect the 400 port on the '06 to the 800 port on the i7. Run Migration Assistant. 400 GB will still take a long time, but it will be closer to 8 hours I think.

New Macbook pro keeps freezing and acting up?
I just got my nre 13in macbook pro last thursday (June14) and since then it was froze thrice. One was when I was downloading a game demo, and two more times when I was trying to watch a movie online. The whole system just froze each time, and I had to force shut down by holding down the power button then powering it back up. Then most recently, when I was on a skype call, the whole screen just blacked out, and my call was dropped etc, and it turned back on by itself after 10-20 seconds. I'm new to this whole mac thing, is there anything I should do? Or well, what should I do?
How much RAM do you have? Are you running off battery or by MagSafe...?
What is forgotten is that OSX is based on UNIX server, well all UNIX can act as a server but if it has a lot of App open it will like Windows use the disk space for virtual memory and this too can topple OSX. If you have a slow internal drive that will most certainly make for these problems.
I'd make sure that all but a few Apps are running. I'd also reboot your WiFi router, unplug it from the wall and the cable or ADSL modem and disconnect the modems from the connection too. Then after tne minutes reconnect them all. Also if it's cable call the company and have them remote reboot your modem too.
Aside from that you might have a rare MB problem, try zapping the PRAM.....
Failing that if you have just bought it take it ASAP to the Genius bar and get some help. Apple customer care is what makes Apple the best company to buy from. I'm not too fond of the design leading function but Apple care is wonderful and you should go to your local store. Do this while your computer can still be returned: it means they will exchange you computer if there is a hardware problem rather than make you wait for a repair....go now!:)
And you are not alone despite anyone telling you this never happens to Apple products. I've had this problem more than once and Apple took care of it.
Try rebooting and just running one App before you take it into the apple store. Good luck!

Appreciate any help!
My daughter also just bought a Mac Book Pro 13" with the same issue. When we migrated over from the old computer, we brought over only her documents, no applications, and she was getting only about a 2 hour battery life on the new MBP. Somewhere in the MBP threads in this forum someone who was experiencing this same battery life problem said he was told by an Apple Genius in a retail store to try setting up a second user, and then to try working out of that user only. So we set up the second user, logged out of the old user, and the battery life readout is now about six hours after a charge when my daughter is logged in as the new user. If she needs old documents or other files she can always log in as the old user to use them, but she rarely has to go back. Whenever she is logged on as the old user the battery life shows under two hours, but when she she logs out and logs back in as the new user it jumps back up to around six hours.
There seems to be no need to eliminate the files etc. that reside under the old user. As long as my daughter is logged out as the old user and logged in as the new user, the battery life is much better. Weird solution, but it seems to be working. She is running Lion 10.7.4.
Hope this helps. -
I had the replacement hard drive installed and the tech said he left the password open. My old password does not work. I can use the computer, but I cannot log in to add new wireless devices or to download programs. I recently tried to download Adobe Flash player, and I needed to log in but could not. I can downloan security updated from Apple and the machine will shut down and restart, without me needing to enter a password. I bought this computer from Apple directly in 2007. Is this a case where I need to send it to them since they can verify that I own it, or can I get help with this online or from a local computer tech?
If you use Lion, boot into your recovery pressing Command and R buttons, press "Utilities" menu, open Terminal and write:
resetpassword
If you have Snow Leopard, boot into your install DVD pressing C button, click "Utilities" and press Password Reset -
it says name which is "owner"
then it ask for a password? I have no idea what that could beWas the box sealed when you took the MacBook home? If it wasn't, I would return it.
Also, check the Service and Suport Coverage on the Apple site. See if the MB has been registered and if so, the date. -
Now it will not .My imessages only go to the iphone 5. But i can send messages from the macpro to someone and it responds to iphone5. What have I changed that I do not know about.
Associate your mobile number with your Apple ID, if you haven't already done so.
Sign out of iMessage on the Mac:
Messages ▹ Preferences ▹ Accounts ▹ Sign out
Sign out on the iPhone
Settings ▹ Messages ▹ Send & Receive ▹ Apple ID ▹ Sign out
Then, on the phone, tap
Use Your Apple ID for iMessage
Sign back into iMessage on both devices and test. If there's no change, you may have to wait for a change in network conditions.
