  • Old Macmini ignores ownership on external HD's, new Macmini does not.

Hi - my old Mac mini has a couple of external HD's set to "ignore ownership on this volume", as they are just storing personal files, one backing up the other nightly. I transferred them to a new Macmini, only to find my backup software won't update from one external to the other (permissions type error messages), and the "ignore ownership on this volume" checkboxes on each are not checked, and greyed out.
I've tranferred the HD's back to the old Macmini, and presto the "ignore ownership on this volume" boxes are now checked again. How can I make this behaviour transfer safely to the new comp?

Thank you! I haven't yet dared try this, but I've found the following info that explains those commands in a fashion even I could understand - I take it this will work for all enclosed folders too? -
    chmod stands for "Change Mode".
The numbers part is a little more complicated.... "777" is three numbers..to be nerdy and specific.. it is three 3 digit binary (base 2) numbers converted into three 1 digit octal (base 8) numbers.
The first number stands for "user", the second group stands for "group" and the final number stands for "other". There are three possible things that can be done with a file: read, write, and execute.. Here is a little reference:
    execute = 001 in binary = 1 in octal
    write = 010 in binary = 2 in octal
    read = 100 in binary = 4 in octal
So where does the 7 come from?
7 in binary = 111 in decimal = read, write, execute
    So you get:
    read write execute = 111 = 1 + 2 + 4 = 7
    read write no execute = 110 = 4 + 2 = 6
    read no write execute = 101 = 4 + 1 = 5
    read no write no execute = 100 = 4
    no read write execute = 011 = 2 + 1 = 3
    no read write no execute = 010 = 2
    no read no write execute = 001 = 1
no read no write no execute = 000 = 0
    <http://www.websitebabble.com/uploading-files-ftp/1667-what-chmod-777-a.html>
I'll have a go in the next few days (will need to switch the HD's back to the new comp first etc) when I'm feeling brave.

  • My new MacBook does not start

My MacBook will not start, I am getting a gray or light blue screen and nothing happens.
Apparently this has a tendency to happen when the ITunes and Photo Booth are open within one session before I shut down the computer.
So far every time that I start the computer I have to press and hold the (control alt P R) keys, then the laptop starts and I get the apple in the screen and the rotating gear.
    Please advice what to do?
I should point out that if I open other programs in a session and then shut down the computer, it does start normally when I restart.

The 4 times chimes is my old habit since os 7.5.3 sorry if that sound amusing to you, on apple sites 2 times is enough.
It will be the last option to do the re-installation.
But it usually help better, and you can narrow down the problem to other factor since the OS X is well installed and fresh.
I prefer install for the first time method, but you can choose archieve and install if you want to save your data there. Any method you choose make sure you back up your data before doing so.
But do you have a good connection in Thai, since I suggest you to update all the updater after you done the installation process.
    Good Luck

  • My new iphone does not start up

i bought the iphone6 yesterday and I opened it today. It does not start up and it shows just a low battery sign and then it turns black. What shall i Do?

Well, Apple's policy on the iPhone warranty outside of the country where it was purchased is:
IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.
Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.
So, it is likely that you will not be able to get it serviced here. However, it would be worthwhile to contact your local Apple Store to see if they will take a look at it for you.
    Cheers,

  • Service created with New-Service does not start

    Hello,
I am trying to create a working service using the New-Service cmdlet. I tried a bunch of different examples, I found on the internet like this one from technet:
new-service -name TestService -binaryPathName "C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" -dependson NetLogon -displayName "Test Service" -StartupType Manual -Description "This is a test service."
The service gets created and is listed in services.msc and Get-Service but I cannot start it. Ever. The state changes to "Starting" but that's all.
I tried it on different machines with different Windows- and PowerShell versions using elevated PS-consoles.
    Thanks,
    Manuel

    Hi Manuel,
I tested on my client, and I also keep getting the error 1053, which indicates timeout and the new created service can not be started during the limit time, so you can try to change the service time limit, please note this needs to change registry value,
Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems:
In Registry Editor, locate, and then right-click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
a.Point to New, and then click DWORD Value. In the right pane of Registry Editor, notice that New Value #1 (the name of a new registry entry) is selected for editing.
b.Type ServicesPipeTimeout to replace New Value #1, and then press ENTER.
c.Right-click the ServicesPipeTimeout registry entry that you created in step c, and then click Modify. The Edit DWORD Value dialog box appears.
d.In the Value data text box, type TimeoutPeriod, and then click OK
    Refer to:
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the
start or control request in a timely fashion - When trying to start the server service.

  • New ipad will not start?

I just opened the box and charge the new ipad. it will not go to the home page. any suggestions?

If you're getting a screen of iTunes and a cable, then you need to activate it by connecting it to a computer that is running iTunes. Getting Started guide : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4053
The manual, which can be downloaded from here http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad , also has a chapter on Getting Started
If you are not getting anything on screen then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear (a reset won't remove content, not that you've got any content on it if it''s new, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot).

I purchased the new mac mini that comes with lion and it started up and works very well, I signed on to the app store with my apple-ID and it downloaded the updates for GarageMand, iMovie, iPhoto and Facetime but even after several days, the the Lion app has not shown up...  any idea how long till they realize that I purchased lion and allow me to install it on my other mac mini?
    Just curious.

  • Haven't used my Ipad in awhile? Will I need a new battery? Not starting up.

I haven't Used My Ipad in awhile...Does it need a new battery? Won't start up.

The best thing to do would be to plug into the power adapter and a wall socket and let it charge for at least an hour. Then try to crank it up. If you haven't used it for a while and the battery did not have a full charge, it may be that a recharge will do the trick.

  • New apps does not starts

I had this problem for a while now with small applications for OSX Mountain Lion that doesnt need to run installation. I can't start them, after double clicking nothing happens. When I do the same on another OSX computer they work fine. Does anybody know what I can do?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • My new Iphone will not start up, when I go to charge it all it does is beep every 2 seconds

My Iphone will not come on, all it does is beep every 2 seconds.

Have you taken any troubleshooting steps?
Start by resetting your iPhone, hold both power and home buttons together for 15 seconds until the Apple logo appears, then let go and wait for iPhone to restart.  You will not lose any information.

  • New X220 will not start up when running on battery

I just received my new Thinkpad X220 4286CTO and found that when the computer is unplugged, I cannot start the computer after hibernation or shutting down.
The battery will charge just fine, and the laptop can run on battery just fine (drained from 100% to about 82% in two hours of use). When running on battery only, the computer can wake up from sleep. However, if I hibernate or shut down and then try to turn it on when unplugged, there is no response (no lights or anything). Then, when I plug the computer back in, it will turn on immediately (without pressing any keys), which surprised me. During this whole time the battery was between 80 and 100% charge.
One other quirk I noticed is that if I turn the laptop back on very quickly (press the power button within 5 seconds of finishing hibernating or shutting down), it will come back on, but if I wait more than 5 seconds, it is completely unresponsive until I plug it back in.
Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it? I will probably just send it back for possible motherboard / battery replacement, but I was wondering if there was anything I could try to fix it and avoid this. Thanks!

I think you need to call support. Sounds like a defective battery or motherboard, as you suggested.
