My new Mini locks up daily.  Applecare thinks its 3rd party software, any guesses?

I have completed a full erase and restore. Mac seemed to work fine. Then, I re-installed a minimum number of programs.  Mini is locking up again.  Are any of the following programs known for stalling out the OS?
Spotify
Pages
Keynote
Dropbox
Logos bible software 4
Splash-top Streamer
X-mind Mindmapping software
Flash player plug-in
I also copied over docs and pics/movies from backup.
Thanks

Try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application uninstaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • 3rd party software for new computer

My old computer is no longer available. I have a new computer that I need to download iTunes onto. The problem is that I need some 3rd party software to be able to sync the 2500 songs from my 80GB video ipod to the new computer. I don't really want to pay for this software. Any suggestions on free software that is reliable to download? Thanks.

  • Apple appt. tomorrow.. What do I do if they try to void my AppleCare bc of 3rd-party upgrades?

So I'm a bit nervous.. Recently I started experiencing some really weird problems with the display on my Late 2011 MacBook Pro (8,2) .. I have a 3-year AppleCare warranty that I purchased when I got the MacBook Pro, which still provides me coverage for another 6 months or so..
I've got an appt. at the Apple Store tomorrow, since I've already went through the whole troubleshooting process on the phone with one of the Geniuses.. and did pretty much every troubleshooting step I could find on the internet.. The problem I'm experiencing seems to be VERY common among the 2011 MacBook Pro's.. Here's an article addressing that very issue (widespread GPU failures due to improper soldering):
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/05/13/apple-remains-mum-as-complaints-mount- over-2011-macbook-pro-gpu-failures
It appears that this issue is something that was caused on the manufacturer's end entirely..
As far as the upgrades I did aftermarket:
    -upgraded to 16gb RAM
    -replaced factory harddrive with SSD
-removed SuperDrive and replaced with OWC Data Doubler + 2nd SSD
I'm fairly tech-savvy and have been building desktops for over 10 years now.. I know all the proper precautions to take when uncovering the insides of a computer and how to properly install/change out components..
According to OWC (a trusted Mac resource), there's a law in the US that states that:
"This consumer protection is owed to the little known Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975. Put simply, the act states that a company can’t require you to upgrade with only its own branded parts to retain the warranty. This important act protects your rights as a consumer and allows you to install OWC upgrades with peace of mind confidence.
However, the warranty doesn’t cover any damage incurred while installing upgrades. That’s why OWC’s free, step-by-step “how-to” DIY videos are extremely easy to follow for even advanced upgrades. See for yourself how easy it is at macsales.com/installvideos. If, however, after watching our videos, you’re still not comfortable performing one or more upgrades, OWC offers Turnkey Upgrade Programs for many Mac models, or you can opt to hire a professional."
    *Link here*:
    http://blog.macsales.com/18244-owc-diys-wont-void-your-macs-warranty
I'm a little bit nervous because I know my rights, I know what I'm doing when it comes to computer hardware maintenance/replacement, and I have a 3-year AppleCare plan that is still valid.. but I have a feeling that they're going to try to get slimy with me and say that my upgrades voided the warranty, or that my negligence caused this problem (which would be BS).. There's also tons of documentation online about people who are experiencing the *EXACT* same problem, with images that match what I'm experiencing, for a huge number of 2011 MacBook Pro users..
I really, really don't feel like having to open up my machine again and uninstall all of my upgrades (memory RAM, SSD, and Data Doubler + SSD) to make it "appear" that I didn't do anything and that the computer's insides are still "untouched" by me.. Even to this extent, I feel that it would be hard for them not to realize that the original components were removed and replaced by 3rd party components (and then re-replaced again before my visit)..
I'd really just like to leave everything in there and have them replace the faulty logic board (which seems to be the solution on the internet).. but I'd like to anticipate any potential questions or conflicts or answers that I should have prepared for tomorrow, if they try to weasel their way out of covering this manufacturer defect by saying that my warranty is "voided"..
Has anyone been in this situation where they had a known, manufacturer's defect problem arise, where still covered under AppleCare protection, but had done 3rd party upgrades to things like the RAM/HDD?
The nearest Apple Store is 1hr45min away from me! (*****) so I'd really like to have my game-plan set ahead of time with what kind of reaction I should be getting when I go in there bc of a manufacturer's defect, but then they see that I've done 3rd party upgrades? (which should be okay w/that law in place.. *see OWC link I posted*)
Can anybody help me out with what to expect or how I should approach everything tomorrow?
    Thanks!!

We are not lawyers. We cannot even tell you what might happen tomorrow. But, if Apple refuses to provide support because you have violated the legal status of the warranty, then you have little recourse but to call an attorney.
You cannot rely on anything you were told by OWC or believe you were told or believe you know. Needless to say no one on these forums can give you reliable information on what Apple will do nor advise you on what to do.

Go to settings, Toggle airplane mode on/off. Make sure bluetooth is off. Turn on wif (airplane mode off). Try to connect.

If its your home router, then reboot router by unplugging for 5-10min. (do this while you're resetting network settings).

  • My laptop wont let me download iMessage onto my laptop, it think its because my software is not up to date.. how do i update my laptop? so i can download it?

i want to be able to use iMessage on my laptop... but i can't dowload it. Do i have to but the latest software at the Apple store to get iMessage?

I suggest you go to your Black Apple and select Software Update. This will allow you to download the latest version of software available to your Mac.  I also recommend that you keep your Software UP TO DATE. Many users are not even aware that this is how you up date your software.  Doing this will keep your computer running smooth and your software Up To Date. This is also recommended by Apple.

  • Ipod 120gb (think its a classic) software version

    Hello all
I have the above ipod. Itunes says it is at the current software level of 2.0.1, but I read there is a 2.0.4 available.
    Am I missing something?

iPod Software 2.0.2 and greater are for the iPod classic 160GB so it sounds like you are up to date.

  • Apple Display doesn't shut off with new Mini

I have a brand new 2009 Mini hooked up to my 23" Apple Cinema HD display.
When I shut down the Mini, the power on the display does not power down.
I used to have this same display hooked up with the same mini DVI to DVI connector hooked up to my late 2006 MacBook. The display used to shut down when I shut down the MacBook.
There is absolutely nothing different in my setup between the MacBook and the new Mini as far as connections and cables as I'm using the same cables.
Is anyones display powering off with their new Mini?
I wouldn't think that the mini DVI out would be any different on the MacBook as compared to the new Mini. But apparently there is unless I'm missing something.
I don't really want to live with this as all of my computers shut down automatically at night using the Energy Saver control panel. With the new Mini, the display remains on all night.
Maybe I should have bought a new MacBook Pro 13 to replace my older White MacBook 13.
    Ideas? Suggestions?

I would hate to say that this might be an upgrade issue with recent updates.. I 'used' to be able to power off the monitor (touch the switch on the side and the light goes off) but no longer able to.
And to confuse the issue, the 23" ACD power switch is now acting like the Mac Pro's power switch.. While the Mac Pro is running a lengthy process, I'll often turn off the monitor if I am away for a few hours but now, when I touch the ACD power button, the Mac Pro responds with a "shut down, sleep or log off" kind of query.. Well that is certainly new to me..
Does this happen to yours as well?

  • Move data from old iMac to new Mini? HELP

I have a dear old iMac 233mhz (rev. a)., running OS 8.6. I need to move some Appleworks files and Netscape Communicator 4.7 emails and address cards to my new Mini Core Solo.
OS 8.6 doesn't talk (easily) via either airport (the iMac is cabled to a snow base station) or direct by ethernet. There may be work arounds, but I find them too complex for my feeble brain and patience.
I have a CD burner, but the old iMac apparently can't burn discs without 3rd party software. Toast 4.x is suggested; my old copy of Toast 5 complains that it needs at least OS 9.x to install.
ebay and yahoo auctions come up dry when looking for Toast 4. Can anyone help, or suggest another method? Emailing the appleworks files does work, but is too slow. (I bought the current AW for the Mini). Thanks.

I'm happy to report total success with my file transfer. My Dad's old iMac ran 8.6 and had no Firewire BTW.
I tried plugging my iPod into the old iMac's USB port but the mac reported it did not have the proper software installed to interact with that device.
I then followed the excellent instructions given in this link (provided by Grant Bennet-Alder elsewehere in this thread):
    http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/os9xnet_nfilesharing.html
It worked like a charm! I needed a crossover cable.
    Thanks everyone!

  • Why is my 3rd party ipad mini charger stop working and showing up as non certified/unreliable?

    Hi.
Last night I unpluged my ipad to bring it to my living room and the charger was working fine.
3 hours later I bring it to my room again to charge it. (It was at 18%) and it wouldnt charge.
I turned on my xbox 360 Original and when I pluged it in to my xbox it said "This cable is un-certified or unreliable to this device."
I said "Must be the xbox." I then plugged it into my 10 watt USB power adapter. Same message.
I tried it with the brick that came with the ipad.It was the same message. I then tried it with my brick that xame with my Ipod touch.
Same. I only had one more brick and that was my camoflauged brick. Same message. I then tried plugging it into my Windows 8.1 Gateway laptop.
It wont even show up on I-exsplorer! I then gave up. I really hope someone can help me with this.
(I have never jailbroke my ipad, I already have 2 official chargers that broke and one broke in 1 week, Its also dead right now and nobody i know has a new fashioned charger. It is also a 3rd party charger that is saying that. I also had it for a month and it never had problems ever.)
    Please help.

In the meantime, plug your USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it will charge, but slowly.
     Cheers, Tom

  • TS3212 Ihave dnloaded itunes, purchased songs and can't get them to load on my new mini Ipod?

My new Ipod mini won't load songs. They are in my library and loaded on my old ipod but I can't get them loaded on my new mini. Its plugged in and says Connected. I'm not subscribed to the cloud...is that it????

    Thanks Chris CA.
In the Gen 4 they offer "Settings" then "Reset Settings"  Then it asks, "Do you want to reset your iPod?"  I click on "reset" but then nothing resets. :-(  This is what makes me think it might be locked or something....

  • Migration woes (mail in particular) PPC iMac w/ 10.3.9 to new Mini w/10.5.4

Me: mac user for 20 years.. web master, and unix not-quite-guru .. so don't be shy and no need to use small words in suggesting a remedy.. at this point I'll hexedit raw HD sectors if I have to...
Mother has an aging iMac, Power PC, one of the "lamp" style.. which has only a CDRW drive, so w got her a new Intel Mac Mini for xmas.
Brought a Firewire cable along and figured Migration Asst would do the job, read a few web pages about it last week in preparation, or so I thought.
Booted her new Mini and opted to transfer data from another Mac... as directed, I rebooted the old iMac with T and saw the Firewire symbol dance around its screen.. I believe at some point it settled into the center and stopped moving.
The new Mini would not recognize it.. giving an error message along the lines of "there are no OS X volumes".. which is patently untrue since she is running 10.3.9 on the iMac (there is an old 9.2.2 System folder there too). 10.3.9 was selected as the "blessed" Startup folder.
So I saw the ethernet option and thought "aha, we'll skin this cat that way instead".. connected the ethernet cable and got the helpful instruction to insert the Install Disc #1 and copy Setup Asst over to the old iMac and then enter a 6? digit code to authenticate.. ok, nice idea, except the install disc is a DVD (dual layer at that I think) and the old iMac can't read DVD (smack some co-op at Apple for not considering that).. even worse, despite 15 minutes of searching I could not simply find this application anywhere on the Apple site for download directly to the old iMac....
so abandoning those ideas, I found a knowledgebase article about migrating manually.. so I continued the new user acct setup on the Mini and got that finished.. then launched the migration asst on the new Mini (from the Utilities folder) and it took quite a while, but finally the HD in the iMac appeared (the old iMac has one and only one drive, the original internal one).
So I copied her photos, music, addr book, ical, mail, bookmarks, keychains, etc info over.. and per the KB I copied the mail plist file from prefs.. the KB says that is all I would need and Mail "will do the rest"...
Not so much... I can see her saved mail folders on the new Mini.. .and I can see in Finder and in Terminal that they should contain old mail (~50 MB worth, these folders exist and are very non-empty).... but inside Mail, no messages appear at all, nor her Inbox (ie. mail she had downloaded already on the old iMac, but not yet saved to a folder, nor deleted)
I am totally at wits end.. ideas?

So in the end, I erased all the Mail I copied over originally, and the prefs file, and started a new acct with her info and imported all her old mailboxes (having saved her old Inbox to a "savedinbox" mailbox, in case Inbox importing didn't work).
Gotta say, couldn't have been more disappointed with the Migration Assistant, which in the end did not a bloody thing for the transition. Thankfully her usage of the old iMac was simple and not that many files... one would think it would be the easy and ideal case for Migration assistant to handle.
I'm marking this as answered only b/c I'm not going back to do this again.. she is up and working and I won't know if any proposed solution actually works.

  • USING A NEW MINI ON A 1080i HDTV WIDESCREEN PROJECTION TV...HELP!!!!

    Hi!
As mentioned on the topic I own a samsung 62" widescreen (yes, 16x9) with HDTV built in (You should see the xbox360 running on this thing!) The thing is, I've looked for a while and I'd like to buy a mac mini for the MEDIA HUB of my home theather.
    PROBLEM:
My tv does not have a DVI/VGA port... It only has Svideo, Video and Component video.
    Solutions????
I know that there are cables that go from VGA to component... but as i've read they do not work.... or do they work on my tv?
Transcoders and decoders??? They cost as much as a new mini (depending on the manufacturer, but they do cost arround 300 or so bucks!)
Apple's adapter? (DVI TO SVIDEO OR VIDEO?) nah... I hear it *****!
    So my solutions???
Buy a new tv (not an option)
SOMEONE CONFIRMS THAT THIS MAGICAL CABLE WORKS ON MY TV!!! YEY!!!
    (A GOOD OPTION)
Or just stick around with apples adapter!
Thanks for your patience and I hope you could help me out
    best!
believe it or not, pretty much every apple product released since 2003, except new intel mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

well, that's kind of have an old school tube. I think it's gonna cost ya a pretty penny to do what you want to do with high quality or you can try this:

  • I just put 8 gb of memory into my new mini, but the computer is only reading 4gb. It tells me that bank 0 has 4 gb and that bank 1 is empty. Which slot is "o" and which slot is "1" ? I re-wiggled the new memory sticks, but it still only reads one of them.

I just added two new memory sticks to my new mac mini, each stick has 4 gb. The computer tells me that it now (with the new memory) only has 4 gb total, however. It says that bank "O" had 4 gb and bank "1" is empty. My two questions are... Which slot is bank o and which slot is bank 1? The computer didn't beep or anything, so I think its just that it doesn't recognize one card. I wiggled them again, in case maybe I didn't put them in tight or something, to no effect. Any suggestions on what I may not have done right???

Same issue here. All chips, old and new working in bottom slot 0 but nothing working in slot 1 (top.)
It also seems to be important to make the insertion at the right angle that was actually steeper than I thought at first. I also got a nice click when it slipped into place. You can also look at the position of the center slot/protrusion on the bottom chip to get an idea of how far the stick needs to be in.
Another thread pointed out that you have to make sure that the retaining clips don't engage before you get it into place as they prevent further movement.

  • New mini vs dual G5 2.7?

I am running Logic 8 on a dual G5 2.7. Are there any advantages of that computer over the new Mac Mini? I have been thinking of upgrading to a new Mac Pro but am thinking that might be overkill. I typically run Logic, Reason, Peak, Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

The new mini should be just fine . I am using an iMac 2007 model and the new mini kills it in specs and I run lots of plugin synths and fx . I would however put more ram in it than the standard 2 gigs 4-8 or more will increase your audio track count .
    2 other things to tak in to consideration ;
An external firewire drive is always best to record to ( on any computer )
A firewire audio interface will give you better results than a USB based one .
Now be for the flamers attack me on USB vs. firewire spec ....
USB based HD are technically faster than firewire , but less band with and when you want to record many tracks you need that band with . the extra speed wont help .
USB based sound cards add burden and to CPU . Firewire dose not .
    Firewire 800 is compatible with FW400 just need a 800 cable with a 400 end .
The Mac Mini FW Bus can handle an audio card and HD or two daisy chained just fine - though I would place the audio card 1st in the chain to avoid interruptions when the external HD is turned on/off .
Happy upgrade to you . Go make some music !
    Message was edited by: DeathByMedia
Extra info : I have not upgraded to 10.6.4 yet and I assume a New mini will have this you should research it's compatibility with Logic . I know 10.6.3 had some issues with it .
