My nMP is finally cured with active monitor adapters!

After 5 months of struggling with my new Mac Pro, I can now declare that it is finally cured with a pair of active adapters. I used two monitors with my nMP and they are Dell and Samsung monitors. The Dell monitor was connected via an mDP-to-DP port cable and the Samsung monitor was connected with an Apple passive thunderbolt-to-DVI connector. I had the following problems:
1. Monitor did not wake up reliably when nMP woke up from the sleep mode.
2. nMP did not boot up reliably. Sometimes it would freeze while booting up. This could happen 5 times in a roll until I did SMC reset.
3. If I use the monitor in VGA mode, the screen blinked.
4. It did not enter sleep mode reliably in the beginning. (I found it was related to the issue between Spotlight and 2 external OWC HDs. So I excluded them from Spotlight search and the problem went away.)
AppleCare worked with Apple Engineering and collected logs/traces from my nMP twice. But they offered no solutions. I dealt with two Apple senior advisors for these issues, and had a feeling that they just wanted to avoid dealing with them. This was very different from a crash problem I had with a 2014 MBA laptop. The Apple senior advisor then followed up with me diligently until my problem with MBA was fixed.
So I posted my issues in MacRumors Forum. A guy in Europe told me that he had the same problems and the problem went away after he used active adapters. He thought the problem was related to the clocking issues between nMP and non-Apple monitors.
Since my problem was with the Samsung monitor, so I got an active mDP-to-DVI adapter. Guess what? The Samsung monitor was okay but the Dell monitor  started to have problems waking up as well. So I got another mDP-to-DVI adapter and used the DVI port on the Dell monitor. Problem solved!!
Now my nMP has been working reliably for 3 weeks! GBA!!!

Many of the Studio displays were ADC. Are you sure that other port is really DVI and not ADC?
My 2004 MDD vid card has one DVI and one ADC connector. I have it connected to a Viewsonic display from about 2007 with both VGA and DVI ports. When I connect the DVI port directly to the DVI port on the G4, the native res looks good but it too small to read (old, tired eyes). If I change the desktop res to make things a little bigger, the image looks like carp--fuzzy and possibly some distortion.
If I use the DVI-to-VGA adapter on the computer and connect it to the monitor. the image is shape and proper at any support desktop res I select.
You mileage may vary.

  • How do you detect a rootkit? With Activity Monitor?

I often check my activity monitor to see if I have the normal amount of processes running. Lately, I've been wondering how to detect a rootkit. Are they detectable in OS X and if so, how would you do it?
Or, are you hosed if you get one?
This also reminds me that I wish Apple would publish a list of ALL of their processes so we could see which ones weren't from Apple...
    Thanks to all who answer.
    - Mark

There is no such thing as a rootkit for a Mac. Even
if there were, a rootkit is, by definition,
invisible. That is why they are so bad. They are
hooked into the very lowest levels of the OS and are
    hidden even from spam/virus checkers.
But again, no such beast exists on the Mac.
    etresoft, thanks.

  • What's the ActivityMonitorD process? -- Activity Monitor with a 'D'

So I've been monitoring my computer's processes with Activity Monitor, working through some possible bugs with a hard drive and I found that there is a process running that isn't listed here: http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all
Anyone know if there is a process called: ActivityMonitorD
That's right *'ActivityMonitor' with a D on the end*. That is a process in addition to the regular 'ActivityMonitor.app'. Anyone able to solve that riddle for me?

What do I make of this information in my Activity Monitor:

  • Activity Monitor crashes every time I launch it since Leopard upgrade.

Activity Monitor crashes every time I try to launch it. It's done this ever since I first upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. I can't seem to narrow down why it happens. It doesn't seem to matter what's running already. I had it startup automatically when I had Tiger and upon the very first boot up in to Leopard it crashed and I've never been able to get it to run.
I saw one other person that said he had the exact same problem with Activity Monitor and the only way he was able to resolve his issue was by copying the program from another Mac. Well, I've only got one Mac. I've run the software update and installed all the available q and I still have this persistent problem.
Is it somehow possible to expand the file off the Leopard or Tiger DVD? Anyone have any other possible solutions? Are there other programs out there that will do the same thing as Activity Monitor?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Delete the com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist file located in /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ and relaunch Activity Monitor. If that doesn't fix it, create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. If so, use Pacifist 2.5 to extract it from the install disk and replace the existing one and the plist file. If not, then you most likely have a conflicting or corrupted file somewhere in the old account. To fix that, delete the original account, selecting the save data option, recreate the old account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the new account, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, and slowly replace stuff. Also, see the steps I posted for resolving conflicts/corrupt plists within an account at:

    @dovn
I red the page, the fact is that I'm not able to figure out what's causing the problem
the application freezes in any occasion, even when the mac was just turned on..
could it be that it's somehow in conflict with an other process running in background?!
Sometime conflict occur, but I doubt with Activity Monitor.
I was thinking of maybe I could just insert the OSX application disk that came with the macbook and trying that way reinstalling the app?!
Did your machine come with Snow? Anyway, I would do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed. You will need to reinstall 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 after the repair install. Do so using only the [10.6.2 combo updater|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959].This approach might fix any corruption leading to your problem.

  • Activity monitor functionality, suspending tasks

Obviously, any process can be killed using Activity Monitor by pressing the big red icon in the upper left... but what about suspending a process? On the command line, it's CTRL-Z. I really wish there was a "pause" button in Activity Monitor. Am I missing something?
    chris

You're not missing anything. It's just not possible to do that with Activity Monitor.
Feel free to submit a feature request to Apple.
    Hope this helps...

  • Activity Monitor not working correctlyResorting the %cp

    Hi,
I've a new iMac, 27 inch, with Maverick installed. I'm having issues with Activity Monitor.
When I open up Activity Monitor, the process window is empty.
Resorting the %cpu tab, shows all of the processes, however it's static, ie the values don't get updated (I tried all frequency updates settings)
When going to the memory tab, all processes show up as 0 bytes
Disk tab also is empty, and stays empty even if i clickt the sort tab
Same for network tab, however after clicking sort it shows the processes, albeit with 0 bytes values and static.
Any advice to fix this would be greatly appreciated. I did already delete com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist witch didn't change things.
    Cheers
    Tom

I have exactly the same issue and have no idea how to fix it and what reason to appear it. In my case the issue started roughly after I've updated my MacOS up to 10.9.1

  • Activity Monitor inaccurate memory

I just added 2x1GB Crucial sticks to my G5 dual 2.5 for a total of 5GB in 10.3.9. But activity monitor now shows incorrect values for free memory. The pie chart shows 1GB of total RAM instead of 5GB. The top command in terminal agrees with Activity Monitor for used RAM, VM, and pageins/outs but does show the correct free RAM as 4.5GB. So this would seem to be a cosmetic issue, but it does make acitivity monitor a lot less useful. Accurate values were reported with 3GB RAM installed before the memory upgrade. Anyone know a fix for this behavior?

Similar issues have been fixed by running the Repair Permissions feature of the Disk Utility. This may also be the result of the address space some applications use to store the amount of RAM installed not being large enough to handle a number over 4GB properly. In either case, the full amount of RAM will be available to the system.

  • MBP with 10.6.8: CPU usage high, no responsible processes shown in Activity Monitor. What causes this?

After using my computer for some time, CPU usage climbs to about 90% (ca. 65% user / 26% system) and fans run at high speed, but there is no processes that seem to use CPU (other than Activity Monitor itself ~1%).
This has happened a few times recently. It happens when I've used my computer for some time, hours or a couple of days (I usually put my computer to sleep when not using it but rarely shut it down). I've tried to quit all running apps incl. Growl, Dropbox, and anything that could be responsible to this but with no results. Putting computer to sleep for a long time doesn't help, cpu usage will climb instantly after wake up. Restarting system is the only thing that helps.
Most of the time I use my laptop with external monitor, lid closed and connected to power supply. When experiencing this, opening the lid causes fans to slow down, but CPU usage remains high and battery drains quick.
Any ideas what might cause this?
My MBP is 15" model with Core 2 Duo 2,66 GHz (MacBookPro 5,3), OS X version is 10.6.8, all available updates are installed.

    Perform a SMU reset.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Remove the anti-virus, it's running a root level process all the time that's taking your CPU and it's not necessary as there are no Mac viruses, Apple has the trojan angle covered already.
Always on anti-virus on a Mac is always a source of problems, also is MacKeeper, uninstall that here if you have it.

If you need to clean the Windows filth off PC files, then use the free, run as you need, ClamXav.
    http://www.clamxav.com/
It seems your machine is used in a corporate enviroment, thus likely a rule that anti-virus must be used, you can avoid high CPU usuage by using the ClamXav instead.

Mavricks, MacbookPro, typical config of everything and standard business user, no heavy graphics, animation or media editing. MS Office, web apps, etc.
I have the same issue with Logmein, which I installed a trial, uninstalled with appzapper, which I thought does a good job of untangling the components of apps but for these 2 it doesn't.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx,

Usually applications like these have their own uninstallers, either build into the installer ( ! ) itself or as a separate uninstaller app. Check the site of the software provider for instructions.

As per project requirement, I have to integrate Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) with Oracle Forms Recognition.
Does anyone have an idea how can this be achievable from OFR Verifier?
    Thanks,

To access OFR tables I run the below script in below sequence in my local IPM environment as found in this link- http://workplacedba.blogspot.in/2012/11/ofr-odc-installation.html
    Seq 1 - 01-OFR-AP-Tables_Oracle.sql

    Seq 7 - 07-INVOICE_NUMBER_FORMATS_INS.sql
    Seq 8 - 08-Insert Into Company.sql
I couldn't found the below queries in my installables -
    Seq 3 - 03-XX_ROUND_IT.fnc
    Seq 4 - 04-XX_ROUNDDOWN.fnc

  • When I run activity monitor with no programs running my dock shows fluctuating usage...between 4% up to 20%.  Random figures that come and go with corresponding CPU usage.  A little help?

My activity monitor show random and fluctuating CPU usage at the Dock site with absolutelyno programs running.  %'s fluctuate between 3 - 20 and they pretty much come and go.  What might be causing this?

There's a lot of background processes running that aren't documented as Apps as such. And some of them are the Time Machine backups, Spotlight searches, all kinds of small little bits of maintenance caches, there's a lot going on. So it's not completely out of the question that this is 'normal' for a Mac. If it were 50% or more I would be concerned but if it spikes up to 20% for a second or two you are probably not in any trouble of any kind.

  • Dual 2ghz G5 appears with only one processor in Activity Monitor

Here's something I haven't seen before... a dual 2ghz G5 appears as a single processor machine in Activity Monitor. I ran the hardware test from the CD and everything checked out fine. I then rebooted and zapped PRAM using commandoption+PR... I held the keys down for a while and zapped it three times. System booted up and showed both procs in Activity Monitor. Restarted system again and now shows only a single CPU.
    Anyone seen this before?
    TIA!
    G5 dual 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Did you ever use CHUD or Open Firmware to disable a cpu?
My preference with G5s is to boot into Open Firmware and
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
which should and is easier to rebuild the device tree rather than zap pram (once is enough, older OldWorld systems urban legend was you needed multiple reboots to be sure).

  • Newbie having problems with noisy fan and high CPU usage in Activity Monitor

I am new to the world of Apple and have got my hands on a hand-me-down PowerBook G4 version 10.4.11. It works fairly well for everything but the Internet.
One of the first symptoms i noticed was that watching stuff on youtube was slow and jumped a lot. I checked a few things out and looked the CPU usage in activity monitor and this was about 80% to 100% when on youtube or even moving from page to page. I'e tried loads of stuff including repairing disk permissions, emptying caches and relaunching finder when the preferences file is on the desktop (not really sure what that was supposed to do).
The next thing I discovered was that if i disconnected the laptop from the mains and played youtube and some other applications the whole thing would go into sleep mode very quickly. I have got temperature monitor downloaded now although I already know it is getting very hot.
PS when it heats up the fan turns on because I can hear a whirring sound...
Would really appreciate some insight into this as it seems to be a good runner otherwise.
PS2 I have loads of free space left in the disk usage tab in activity monitor.
    Big thank you in advance

Welcome to the world of PowerBook!

Virtually no G4s are dealing well with web video anymore. The video technology used by modern developers puts a huge strain on a G4 processor. As this a choice made by coders, there is not much you can do about it. Some people suggest adding RAM but the effect is marginal considering it's the processor that's taxed.
Notebooks get hot. The fans in my 1Ghz 17-inch PowerBook from 2003 kick in between 130 and 140°F. The danger point is not until in the vicinity of 100F so don't sweat it to much. Make sure you do not cover the case bottom by setting the computer on a thick cloth placemat, pillow or other bedding item, or on your lap without a lapboard. The bootom of the case is part of the heat dissipation system and needs air under it to work
A lot of PowerBooks have, by now, lost some or all of their "feet" that gve a little space under the case. Don't bother looking for official replacements--get the silicone door/drawer bumpers from the hardware store that stick on. I found some about 3/16" thick that let more air under my PB thatn the mostly missing originals.
The next thing I discovered was that if i disconnected the laptop from the mains and played youtube and some other applications the whole thing would go into sleep mode very quickly
Your battery is likely dead from old age. Batteries only last about 2-3 years. You are seeing a sign of the battery lacking sufficient remaining capacity to run the computer. Get this utility:
    http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
(you'll need the 2.6.6 version for Tiger) and post what is says about "Health" and "Cycles."
