My Nokia 900 is Haunted

My phone has been acting strangely over the last month or so. When i plug it in, the touch screen freezes and no action can be taken unless i unplug the phone. Every once and a while the phone will take actions of its own, like last night i set it on my nightstand and i looked over after hearing some clicking noises and it was going through my contacts, earlier in the month it made a call in the middle of the night - i woke up hearing the phone ringing a number that was on my contacts. The next day it was sitting on a table and i heard clicking noises and it was on the Bing search page and something had typed in ..com into the search field. It also went to the Xbox games section and it was clicking through games....
I reset the phone but it continues to do this. Any ideas? Could someone be remotely controlling the phone for some reason?

I've been getting this too. Mostly the phone has been sliding off its new pouch case when rested on top of it, but tonight jumped off a pile of CDs on my coffee table onto the carpet. It wasn't vibrating due to an incoming message etc. at the time, and was placed squarely onto the CD cases in a way that it couldn't naturally slide. I'm thinking gyroscope too.

  • 10yr customer switching to AT&T from Verizon for the Nokia 900 Lumia

So I've been with Verizon for almost 10 years.  That's about $20,000 to $30,000 I've given them.  I know that's nothing to a massive company, but I also know that it's not peanuts either.  I have been very happy with Verizon during those years (though I have gotten sick of every single other company always having nicer, better, cooler phones).  But their service has been good, as well as the customer service.  However, I have gotten to a point where I don't like the android phones at all, and don't really like iphones either.  I've been sitting on an old HTC TP2 and now am out of contract.  I was hoping Verizon would get the 900 Lumia, but it has now been announced as AT&T only.  Why does Verizon always have to be the last company to get any sort of innovative phones?
I am about 90% sure I will be switching to AT&T.  I don't like the way Verizon clings to their droids, how their salespeople only push one or two devices, and I don't like how they handled their iphone introduction (instead of innovating, they just jumped on the bandwagon a few years too late).
I know that the people interested in Windows Phones are a small minority, but if we can get this thing to trend it might get someone's attention.  At worst, make them consider bringing in some new phones.  I don't want the dumbed-down 700 series Nokia phone.
Anyone else considering a switch to AT&T?

    They did it once already.

  • Nokia 900 to be $99 at Launch?

    http://wmpoweruser.com/rumour-att-roadmap-shows-march-18th-nokia-lumia-900-launch-for-only-99/
According to the site above, the Nokia 900 may only be $99 at launch.  If that is true, it makes even MORE sense for me to switch.  I had already planned on switching anyway, even though it would hurt my wallet to start off with since I would have an ETF to Verizon, but for only $99, it doesn't hurt quite as much!  I was expecting this to be $199 or $250 when it came out.  Way to go Nokia and ATT if this is true, cause at that price, this is a big win.

If the rumor is true; definately jumping ship and VZW doesn't make any annoucements about their WP plans.
Waiting to see what the Mobile World Congress brings at the end of February.

  • Nokia 900, screen freezes cannot reboot, etc and o...

    Hi
I am now on my 2nd 900. I bought one back on May 4th. Within a couple of weeks, the screen would freeze up.  You could still hear/use the voice command, but no matter how you tried, you could not reset (hard or soft) and the screen would just stay like that, time not changing, etc. for a couple of hours.
I went back to AT&T and it unfroze itself while I was there.  It was frozen for over 2 hours.  It did it again and again.  On June 10th, I spent over 2 hours on AT&T and then Nokia's tech support line (using another phone to call) they only suggested totally wiping it out and starting again, not what I'd consider a viable solution.
Last week, it did it one more time and I took it to a different AT&T store and they (for the first time) suggested I get it replaced and called tech support for me.  Despite massive documentation on how often the phone had frozen up and calls, emails, in persons, to tech support since I had gotten it, Nokia was only willing to send me a refurbished model (over 30 days, nobody suggested I return it before).  This time the phone was frozen for over 3 hours and when it came back up, it had lost all data for the past week (including a very important test result from the NIH).  Later that evening, all the texts and data reappeared.
The new to me phone arrived yesterday and since there is apparently no backup and restore option, I spent most of yesterday making it look like the one I was returning.  Today, this one locked up again, I went back to
AT&T who just shrugged.  It was frozen for 40 minutes.
The only consistency I can see is MOST of the freezes come after I've received a text message.  As I said, the phone will continue to 'talk' to me and take commands, but nothing works, none of the buttons, etc.
I have no idea what to do at this point, I totally have no faith in this phone or even Nokia at this point and I'm apparently 'stuck' with it for the 2 years of my contract.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if anyone knows where the underscore character on the keyboard is, that would be a nice feature (don't even get me going on the lack of apps, and no sound in PowerPoint)!!
    Thank you.
    Solved!

Today is Sept 21, 2013. My 15 month old Nokia 900 windows phone will not start. I really liked it.
Reading some of the threads I realize now that I was lucky to have it last this long.
The phone will not start, cycles through vibrate, black screen, white/lightblue screen, nokia screen, then Rethink possible AT&T screen where it stays or recycles around again. Sometimes I get the battery screen with low in the red. I tried all the recomended fixes that I could find here and at Nokia site. No luck.
My phone was fully charged yesterday morning before and was barely used yesterday.
Screen locked last night. Shut it down and then restarted and then the above mentioned problem and would not start.
All of these problems are document on this discussionand Nokia web site but no real solution.
Have tried most of the things suggested on the web site except the wipe out data reboot.
If I did that and it works I might as well get a new phone.
Not so easy to back up your data/info with the Nokia windows phone versus say the Samsung
    1. lost photos - luckily I do not use it that much
    2. lost videos - not that great
    3. music - can rebuild
    3. Lost apps - all free ones luckily
    4. Will have restore/rebuild address/phone book from my last save (unfortunately that was May) and many changes
    5. Lesson learned back everything up more often on a regular basis.
    6. Never used it for email - so that will not be a problem
But what a pain.  And I do not have a phone.
Will be calling Nokia on Monday - wish me luck. My expectations are very low.
Went to the AT&T store today. One gal tried to help but basically the same things I had tried.
Then the blame game. Nokia knew plenty of problems etc, newers models ie 920 are better, but if you check this web site plenty of the other models have these problems
I had a Blackberry for 5 years and it always worked even after much abuse. Even at the end when it crashed, I could remove the battery - hard reboot - and it always started and functioned again. Plus the Blackberry had great software to syncrcronize and/or save. But Blackberry did not keep up with the times.
Attraction of a smart phone was too great. Got the Nokia 900 - Nokia's attempt to catch up with the times. With so many reports of similarly painful problems, I will no longer be recommending the Nokia phones. Nokia will probably be going the way of Blackberry - downward. Too little too late and lots of problems. Shame as I liked the functionality of the phone and ability to have multiple things opened with AT&T network. Really not AT&T's fault that Nokia phone did not last.
But a real pain in the butt now. An body with any alternative solutions let me know.

  • Nokia 900 flickering wallpaper right after pressin...

I am on my third Nokia Lumia 900 now and all three have had an issue with the wallpaper "flickering" into vertical streaks right after I press the power on button.  Has anyone else noticed this problem?
The flickering doesn't stop the phone from working in any way, but it does make me wonder about the build quality.
    -Paul

The recent Lumia 900 firmware update from Nokia on AT&T in the USA seems to have fixed the problem.  I have only noticed the screen flicker once in the last few days after updating my phone.
Has anyone else made the update and noticed the fix?

  • How do I unbrand a Rogers Nokia 900?

Background: I have an unlocked Rogers (Canada) Nokia Lumia 900 running Windows Phone 7.8 that I am running on the Bell network.  With two exceptions, all functions work perfectly.  However, I cannot send or receive pictures by SMS text messaging.  Also, I cannot enable, "Internet sharing."
In attempting to fix the text messaging limitation, I've noticed that I cannot alter the SMS center number (located in messaging >> settings).  The current SMS center number, which is +14382762000, cannot be deleted or any changes to this number be saved.  In anticipation of some suggestions, be advised that I have changed the Micro SIM card without any luck.  Also, this identical phenomenon occured while unlocking a Samsung Focus from the Rogers network.  Considering that the 'Rogers' graphic continues to be displayed upon device startup, my guess is that there is some sort of branding that has occured in the pre-OS, firmware or bios layer.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Rogers support reportedly have no access to information regarding the installation of a Rogers-branded OS.  They could not direct me to a department or point me to somebody who might know how this occurs.  With some pressure, the representative suggested that a third-party mobile phone repair service might be able to flash an unbranded operating system onto my phone.
Perhaps if I knew more about what that meant, I wouldn't be feeling quite so skeptical.  As it stands, I've gone just about as far as I can with this.  I've learned that Rogers and perhaps other carriers generally are pretty shady in their locking and branding practices.
Thanks to all who have considered my problem.

  • Nokia 900 update not appearing

So my wife has a lumia 900 we bought for her awhile ago. Here is our issue:
I have zune completely updated and whatnot. We are trying to update to 7.8 on it, but when I try to update it, there shows no update at all. The time is set correctly on auto. I was wondering if it not having a sim card in it has anything to do with this? I would greatly appreciate some feedback if anyone has had the same issue or answers. Thank you.

Try turning off the firewall and antivirus and not running anything else during update./

  • Number of Nokia 1020 issues....

So Monday my wife and I bought new phones after being on Nokia 900 for two years.  My wife got a Nokia Lumia 1020 and I got Nokia 1520.  After getting the phone I decided to upgrade both phones straight to WP 8.1.
After upgrading the 1020 is having these issues.
When the phone gets fully charged it bricks the phone.  I have to do a hard reset by holding down holding the power button and volume button.  The bad thing about this is she uses the phone as an alarm clock which doesn't work because the phone needs a hard reset.
When plugging in the phone, the phone doesn't give you a audio alert.  The phone shows as charging but never makes a sound to indicate it.
When sliding up the lock screen it doesn't make any noise. Going to Settings->ringtons+sounds->Lock and unlock is checked.
When plugging ithe phone into USB it doesn't charge.  Her van is a 2013 Toyota Sienna.
Anyone know how to fix these issues.
    Thanks,
       Michael

The 8.1 preview for developers is not for every day use. It is for app developers to work out bugs and problems with the apps they are developing for the 8.1 update when it is released for general distribution.
I would perform a soft reset on the 1020.
If the phone is not performing as expected do a soft reset. A soft reset does not lose data. it is like pulling the battery.
Hold the volume down button and the power button down until the phone vibrates, release. This takes about 10 seconds.  The phone will shutdown and restart.
There phone will have to fix itself,

  • Verizon mades changes in the coding and now Windows Phone 7 is having data issues!!!

Starting about 3 weeks ago, I stopped receiving text messages and even worse stopped receiving calls yet alone my voicemails.  I have changed not one thing to my phone, everything is exactly the way it was before the issues arised.  Now I have to trick my phone to receive my data by dialing into my voicemail...  And then what do you know, 30 text mesages, 12 voicemails!!!
The voicemails wont even tell you the date or time stamp (the time the voicemail was received).  After numerous *228 and talking with level 2 over the holidays, I see a huge article on multiple news sites stating Verizon is having data issues...  Dropped calls, loss of data, no signal while all our phone keep showing full bars and 3g.  Verizon stated its only happening on there 4gLTE system and not 3G but thats a load of crap.
All one has to do is a google search of loss of text messages or voicemails on Verizon and you will see 100's up to 1000's of users like you and me all experiencing the same issues.  And not just with Windows Phone 7, but with there baby Driod and iPhone as well.
What really ****** me off is that Verizon loves to play the blame game or pass the buck game.  Hard Reset your phone and that will solve the problem...  Yeah Right.  If this was our OS and we updated a driver that changed the OS in the background I can see that being the solution.  But for the 100's or 1000's of users that go to work daily, check there emails and text daily, and haven't changed one thing on the phone... THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!
Now I read an articile for someone extermely close to Microsoft stating that Verizon turned down Nokia's new 4GLTE phone because they have no faith in the operating system and I have to think that maybe behind the scenes Verizon is trying to force us off Windows Phone 7 platform with data issue behind the scene and try to get us all into the Droid Platform which they make 50% of the cash off the phone just like the iPhone...
This is a joke, and I am really starting to think about going to ATT and getting the HTC Titan or the new Nokia 900.  I have already research a 3 party app that will allow you to backup and restore your phone.  And just read that Microsoft just put out an ad for backup, restore and cloud backup programmers for this latest feature.
Verizon the games need to stop, Verizon you need to stand behind this Platform, Verizon you need to provide better service for all us 3G users!!!

  • Free at last from Word for the Mac 2011

I used Word for 20 years but when I moved on to Lion, I found the 2011 version
of Word for the Mac to be a muddled, useless ball of snakes. I switched to Apple's Pages
and was pleased with its intuitive and productive arrangement. What a difference!
With Pages, it is especially easy to produce items that are a mix of text and
drawing elements (e.g., borders). Unllike the disaster of Word's Ribbon, it has an
area at the top where you can display (from a wide array of options) those
choices of production tools you wish to have available.
I think if you give Pages a try, you'll never go back to Word.

    They did it once already.

  • Getting error code 8018001E when updating phone

I am getting an error code 8018001E when attempting to update my Nokia 900 phone.
    Background:
On Jan 30th I saw that the 7.8 update was available so I plugged my  phone in to my Win8 computer, Zune started up and notified me that the update was available.
I started the update, and had to step away from the computer for a moment.
In that moment my wife sat down at the computer and switched to her profile.
When I got back, I expressed my concern about her switching profiles during the update but she needed to show me something.
I then switched back to my profile and saw that Zune was at step 6 of 10, restarting my phone the phone was however had the "data transfer mode" graphic showing .
I waited about 10-15 minutes, and decided something went wrong.
switching back to my wife's account I saw that her copy of Zune had started and was on a screen saying that the update had failed and that the phone would need to be restored from the last back up.
Closing this  returning back to my account I attempted canceling the update and closed Zune.
When restarting Zune I was prompted to 'Restore' the phone and clicked OK/continue/next whatever it is.
I believe the phone then restarted and the restore process completed.
My phone was now reset back to last August (the last update) loosing the last six months of texts/game saves/applications added/etc...
Plugging the phone back in I was prompted to update the phone I accepted and the update(s) completed without issue giving me windows phone 7.8.
This morning I plugged the phone back in and was prompted to install another update (Nokia specific no details as to what it is)
When updating the phone gets through step 7 of 9 then seems to reset and restarts the phone then tells me there was an error updating giving me the error code    8018001E
This code does not seem to be common error (not listed in the standard MS help wizard)  But I do see some references to an issue on the Mango update on the LG E900 that appears to be resolved.
Looking at my phone the os and firmware versions are below
    OS version: 7.10.8858.136
    Firmware revision number: 2175.1003.8112.12085
Looking at the Nokia website I see the latest firmware for the 900 should be:
    2175.2307.8858.12480
    (http://www.nokia.com/us-en/support/product/lumia900/)
So I am guessing that this update is attempting to update the firmware.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

While we feel your pain, the actual update is handled by Microsoft through te Zune update function. As such I would advise you to contact them on this issue.

  • N900 dead

Please excuse me if this topic was already discussed, but i have followed these other ones and none of them was exactly my case:
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=topfaq&thread.id=168
    /discussions/board/message?message.uid=589647#U589647
I have received this week my new N900. Everything superb until last Friday when I was in my car listening music through the A2DP profile (stereo bluetooth), received a call, was using also 3G and all this meanwhile the N900 was plugged to the car charger (borrowed from a N97). That was quite usual with my HTC Diamond. But suddenly when I left the car the N900 bricked, so I restarted but since then the only thing I could see is the NOKIA logo with the white wallpaper.
Later at home i tried to remove the battery, put it back again, plugged to the adapter and i could see a small usb logo on the right top corner. Then I followed the guides found here to flash und update the firmware (flasher-3.5 and so on, with my windows 7 pc). First I reinstalled the latest firmware file (.bin) and it seems to be OK, with no error comand. Then I rebooted the N900 but the result was the same, it stopped 30-40 segs later and switch off. I though it was also necessary to do the eMMC, so i repeated following the new steps, but in this case i found these messages from the flasher:
    -USB not found
-USB raw data transfer EP found at EP2
-SU_GET_UPDATE_STATUS_REQ terrminated with error code 1.
I have no idea what do they mean but the case is that now I can see no usb logo on the top when I plug the usb adapter (either USB or AC), so it is now impossible to comunicate with the pc. I have tried again to remove the battery, even in a Nokia center with another battery from the 8500 which i didn't know was the same, but no result. The most strangest thing is that the N900 refuses to be charged as once it is plugged to the AC, a yellow light appears and on the screen I can only see the nokia logo on a dark backlight (as I said, with no usb logo now), but 30 segs later it is continously switching off.
I am already mentally prepared to ask Nokia for a replacement, but I still resist to accept there is no solution to revive this little but complex device.
Thanks in advance for your help.

As cpitchford  mentionned it, the N900 does not behave well with a low battery. I've experimented a similar problem a while ago when I left my N900 turned off for quite a while. It seems it did not like it as when I tried to load the battery again, nothing happened (even the orange charging light was off). I replaced the battery with a brand new one, and it worked again.
Today as I was using FonJoikuSpot on my Nokia 900 (I'm using this solution to get WiFi access at home using my unlimited data plan and it consumes a lot of battery), it suddenly went off. I could see the Nokia logo on the back screen of my phone. I removed the battery, put it back and tried and turned on my N900. Nothing happened.
The guy at the Nokia Care Point (not a Nokia employee) told me that my Nokia was dead. I explained that I had a similar problem in the past and it was fixed with a new battery. He just smiled at me and went to attend another client.
So I'll try and order a new battery (again...) and hope that my N900 will come to life again!
I'll keep all of you posted on whether this solved the problem or not.

  • General Warning to those in Singapore - Stay away ...

Ok. Expat working out here in Singapore.
Walked into a telco on the weekend. Fell in love with the Lumia 900. Planned on getting the 920. Now I am not so sure.
If anyone works for Nokia and can reach their executives/leadership, let them know that NO telecommunications company here supports the Lumia 900 in 4G/LTE mode. Only 3G/3.5G.
When I asked what they support, the usual suspects comes out, HTC, Samsung S3 and even the yet to be released Apple iPhone 5 (release date in Singapore next Friday).
There are 3 major telco's here; Singtel, M1 and Starhub. Zero, Nada, Zilch support for Lumia (any version) in 4G/LTE. I rang each of them in turn.
If you're in Singapore, seeing this might change your mindset on buying Nokia.
If you're a Nokia employee/shareholder, Nokia needs to change the mindset of telecommunication/carriers or they might as well just give up now.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Maybe you need to be a bit more careful before publishing such broad statements. The Nokia 900 LTE version was released exclusively in the US on AT&T. However if you check the Lumia 920 and 820 datasheets, you will see the following:
    Operating Frequency Bands
    GSM 850
    GSM 900
    GSM 1800
    GSM 1900
    WCDMA Band V (850)
    WCDMA Band VIII (900)
    WCDMA Band II (1900)
    WCDMA Band I (2100)
    LTE 800
    LTE 900
    LTE 1800
    LTE 2100
    LTE 2600
    From the Singtel 4G FAQ:
What is the 4G technology which SingTel is using?
SingTel is currently running 4G on LTE 1800/2600.
    Based on this article - http://www.techgoondu.com/2012/09/06/m1-to-roll-out-singapores-first-nationwide-4g-network-on-sept-1... :
"In Singapore, users will be able to easily switch from one telco to the next. Since all three telcos here are running their LTE networks on 1,800MHz and 2,600MHz frequencies, users will be able to keep their LTE phones and just slide in a new SIM card from their new telco."
Therefore both the Lumia 920 and 820 will work perfectly fine on ALL 3 major telcos which you mentioned.

  • Living on the edge

I want it all.  I have newest technology, but absence of flash is unacceptable. I have MacBook pro, iPhone 4, iPad 3, iPod Classic  (must sync) , iPod  4,,apple TV, IMATCH, iCloud, -- so I have my multimedia, but am lacking certain applications I want to play - requiring Flash. What if I invest in iPod Touch for media streaming mobility and go with Galaxy Notepad or new Nokia 900?  Will I have the best of both worlds?

Actually windows 8 supports flash in both the metro interface and the desktop and they are coming out with TONS of mobile devices this year, tablets, ultrabooks, hybrid tablet/ultrabooks, and all kinds of mobile devices.
A friend of mine made this video after I asked him about this same thing.

I am a long time Apple product owner, I have an iPhone, iPad and macbook air, but this flash issue is a huge concern for me as I run a company that uses flash for designing online t-shirts.
