My now erased and repaired SATA 250 GB internal drive

My now erased and repaired SATA 250 GB internal drive is not recognized as a worthy destination for Mac OS 10.8.x. Now running MacBook6,1 (white unibody) on flash drive boot. Help?

    You are welcome.
    convert and store externally?
What versions of iPhoto and Aperture is your wife using? With both iPhoto 9.3 or later and Aperture 3.3 or later she simply could open her iPhoto library in Aperture and be done, since these versions are using a unified library format.

  • I purchased a new ipad 3.  I have all of my apps synced to the new ipad.  Can I now Erase and Delete all of the data off the old ipad without effecting my account?

I purchased a new ipad3 and have gotten all of my previously purchase apps loaded.  Can I now perform an erase and delete all data on the old ipad without doing harm to my itunes account and my new pad?

I just bought the new iPad over the weekend. Restored from the old iPad backup - got everything moved onto the new one gave the old one to my daughter - wiped my 4 email accounts off of the old device and then she proceeded to delete all but about 3 apps from the thing. It had no effect on my new iPad.
    You are good to go!

  • Erasing and reinstalling my mac pro hard drive

I have an older Mac Pro (2006 I think).
I want to erase and reinstall the hard drive. Once the disk is clean, is there a way to install OS directly to mountain lion? Or will I have to install from an ealier complete set of physical disks?

If it shipped with 10.4 and is a 2007 or earlier Mountain Lion is not supported, only up to Lion.
You download and save the Lion installer first and would need to have 10.6.8 to access the App Store.
Leave what you have as is, and just install a new system to another of the drive bays.

  • Successfully expanded storage with Seagate SATA/300 500GB internal drive!

*Initially thinking I'd add an external firewire 250GB drive for video production storage, I am thusfar delighted that I went with the Seagate 500GB internal drive they call the Seagate SATA/300. By following the combination of instructions that Seagate and Apple provided with drive and operating system, it worked perfectly the first time! I've never had such an easy upgrade with my Windows computers. I chose just one partition so I'd have all 500GB available for a family video project, which I trust will be somewhat overkill.*
My 85 year old mother has consented to interviews about her childhood memories from both sides of her family tree. Her maternal grandmother apparently once shared how she and her parents learned of President Lincoln's assassination when a man walked up to their Maine farm home to break the several day old news. She, like her descendants, was a distant cousin of the late president. And, there was no such thing as "Breaking News" in the mid 1800's.

Hi! I presume that with all your desire to save important historical information you have provided sufficient backup capabilities to your system? It would be a shame to lose important information for lack of a sufficient backup routine. Tom

  • How to move the OS and files to a different internal drive?

I want to move the contents, including the OS, of the main hard drive on my 2 X 3 Ghz Dual core Intel Xeon Mac Pro. The drive is too small for any additional software, so I want to move it to a much larger internal drive.  I am not able to use Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Your help would be appreciated.

  • Panther server and share points on separate internal drives

I'm using an old Graphite G4 with OS 10.3 server. I've installed the system on a small drive, and want to set up share points on a raided pair of larger internal drives, but have not been able to find the way to do it, as server admin doesn't see the raid. Surely this can't be that unusual a setup...
    Clues?

IIRC, in 10.3 you use Workgroup Manager to designate share points
It's been a while, but from memory you open Workgroup Manager, connect to the server, then click the 'sharing' icon in the top bar. From here you can choose any directory on the system and setup the sharing rules.

  • My music won't sync to my iPhone 4s after it got completely erased and then my computer's hard drive crashed.

I was updating to iOS6 and I accidentally knocked out my USB hub when I was moving the printer cable. My iPhone cord, which was in the USB hub, obviously got disconnected. I found out the hard way that I had to format my phone, or it would just be a really expensive paperweight. I did.
A couple days later, I added all of my country music back onto my phone just so I had something to listen to. I listen to a wide variety of music, however, so that was just a small portion of my library. A week and one day after the operating system incident, I got the good ol blue screen. I'm used to them, even though my laptop was purchased in May 2011 and I shouldn't have to be used to them, so I just tried to fix it, to no avail. After running the Dell diagnostics, I was greeted with "Hey! You're hard drive is done!" in computer speak. Numerous expletives later, I booted my computer into safe mode and manually copied all of my files to my terabyte external hard drive.
I've got my computer back now and I copied my files back onto my computer. They're all in iTunes, but I can't click and drag them onto my phone. When I drag the songs, the icon has the number of songs and the circle with a slash through it. I'm not technically incompetent...so I'm thinking that Apple is so afraid that I'm going to steal the music I paid for that they're not allowing me to move it back to my phone. If someone were to prove me wrong and solve my problem, I'd actually be a really happy camper. So.....anyone?
    Thanks!!!!!
    A

I solved my own question. So for anyone else who has this problem, here's what to do.
    1. Plug in your iPhone. Sync it with the computer.
    2. Click on your phone in the sidebar and click on your phone's music tab on the top right.
    3. Select that you'd like to sync music from this library.
    4. Select what you want to sync. Yes, it will delete the current music off of the phone but if you've imported that into your new library, then you'll just put it right back on. Your phone currently thinks it's supposed to sync with the hard drive that doesn't exist, so that's the problem.
    5. Press apply, then press sync (lower right).
    6. It should sync everything....I hope....That's what it looks like it's doing.
    7. Never accidentally unplug your phone during an update again.
    8. Hope to whatever god you pray to that your hard drive doesn't crash again.
    9. Enjoy your day

  • Should I Get A PCI Sata Card For Internal Drives

I'm transferring Files from old G4 to a new G5 and it's taking forever. The sata drives seem to work slower. When I transfer the same way(Firewire)on my G4 it's much faster. Someone said to get a PCI sata card and hook up my internals to that instead of the factory connection. That it's faster that way. I'm going to have to burn to dvd and transfer that way, but it seems to defeat the purpose. Any suggestions are appreciated.
    G5 Dual Core 2.0 with 2.5 GB and 2 250 Drives

Come to think of it, the last time I needed to transfer some media from my G4 to G5, the quickest and easiest way (mind you they are in separate rooms), was to pop out the G4 drive and use one of these cheap IDE USB adapters. Since the G5 is USB2, the process was pretty quick.
My guess about the G5 in target mode is there must be some kind of overhead, but the SATA is FAR and away faster than the FW connection between them, so a SATA card won't help.
Shane Ross and I are currently using "popsicle stick" internal RAIDs in our G5s. See this thread:

  • Erasing and installing Mac OS 10.5.8

I have just had to erase my hard drive and reinstall Mac OS 10.5.8. It has been transferring files from my external hard drive and seems to be stuck on "Transferring files to support applications - Less than one minute remaining" for 8 hours (overnight)! What should I do???

Try using Disk Utility t repair your disk
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot and repair permissions from your internal drive.

  • I frequently have to erase and restore my new flash drive

I am having a problem with my new flashdrive. I got it cause I accidentally fried my old one (the computer didnt fry it, its a long story). First problem I had was when i plugged it in, It didnt show up, not even in disk utility. Eventually it did (only in disk utility) on a different computer and I was able to restore the flash drive. Then it would show up on the desktop of my other laptop (both are mac's, one is a 2007 macbook pro (the laptop isnt the problem, dont judge it by its age it works like new) and the one i got it to show up on is a 2011 macbook pro (I think?)). Anyway, now it showed up on my 2007 macbook pro. I unplugged it (ejected it first) and then later plugged it back in. It wouldn't show up on desktop but it did this time in disk utility and had to erase and repair it. then it showed up. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, it showed up. sometime later, I plugged it in again and same thing. erase and repair. I have no idea why this is happening, I didnt lose anything i didnt have on the drive cause it was on my computer, but obviously i cant have this keep happening if I have irreplacable data on it. Please help me! By the way the 2007 macbook pro is running lion but the other macbook pro is running mavericks. Thank You!

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • Is it possible to reformat and erase ONLY ONE partition of the same drive?

    Hello,
Title really says it all....can this be done on the same drive, while leaving the other partition intact?
I was thinking of partitioning 50/50 - one for Time Machine and the other for important files.
    Thank you in advance.

    Of course you can.
Open Disk Utility and format the drive as a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). After that you can partition the drive. Each partition can then be formatted, erased and repaired individually.
HOWEVER - please note that it is not advisable to run Time Machine and other important files from the same physical drive! If the drive fails, you lose all the data on it. Hard disks are cheap and I suggest you always have a backup of inportant data on another drive. Hard drives WILL fail, it is just a question of time!

  • Installed OS X Snow Leopard on external HDD, now won't allow me to delete files from Mac internal drive

    Hi,
I am stuck!  My 1 TB iMac 27" decided to stop booting up and would only stay at the grey screen with the apple, gear turning and progress bar. When it got to a certain point on the progress bar it would shut down.  Thanks to so many helpful people and their experiences I was able to try many different things including (Command + S, typing /sbin/mount -uw / enter , chmod 775 / enter, logout enter, then rebooting holding down Command + V) and (Reinstalling OS X and using Disk Utility to repair - came up with Disk can't be fixed).
Nothing worked until I read a couple of very wise answers who said "Your hard drive is not dead, but too full...keep at least 10% free at all times". I was down to about 1% (ooops!)  Thankfully hubby had bought me an external HDD for Christmas, onto which I installed OS X and being connected to my iMac, it recognized my internal Macintosh HD and all my files are there.  Phewww!  But I don't want to use my external HDD as my startup disk, I wan't to keep my Macintosh HD for startup but it is too full to repair and select as startup.
My problem is that I cannot delete files from Macintosh HD, and I've tried to unlock files/folders but they don't seem to be locked.  But when I drag them to the trash can it says "The item ... can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted."  Again, many helpful answers online, but nothing is working.  I have 2 Finder windows open, one with external HDD (new startup disk), and old HDD (Macintosh HD) but all items in Macintosh HD can't be altered or deleted (right click doesn't highlight to change the name).  So if I can't delete my files, I can't reinstall OS X and repair disk and select it as my startup disk.  I'd be so thrilled if someone can help me.  I have tried unlocking folders, and I downloaded 'Trashit'. Neither worked, so I figure because it has the little pencil crossed out on the menu bar that it is protected somehow...I just don't know how/what to do.  Thanks

Ok, so I'll try set it out a bit clearer than my first post,
This is what I've done, and the results:
    1. My son unplugged working iMac Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, 1TB with only 11GB available space
    2. Turned it on and got the white screen, apple, turning gear and load-up bar
    3. Turned Mac off and waited 1/2 a minute.
    4. Turned Mac back on...(same as 3.), tried again many times
    5. Began searching internet for answers (see original post)
    6. Found answers and did the following:
                   1.     Put OS X installation disk into drive
                   2.     Attached External Hard Drive
                   3.     Installed OS X onto External Hard Drive (With a different name & password to original HDD)
                   4.     Found Macintosh HD still worked so tried to delete files only to get message saying                                           files couldn't be deleted (see original post)
I've tried changing the permissions in 'Get Info' and this is what happens:
1.Right click Macintosh HD - says "You can only read"
Name: System - Read & Write
                                                                 Admin -   Read & Write
                                                                 Everyone - Read only
2.Click on padlock to unlock - doesn't turn black to be able to change anything
3.Check the box "Ignore ownership on this volume" (someone else advised to do this)
    4.Name changes to 'mydrive (Me)'
5.Lock padlock and Name still says mydrive (Me) but still 'You can only read'
I don't know what is wrong or what to do, but perhaps you are right LowLuster, that because I named them different names it is protected in some way.
My thought now is to copy all my files to the external HDD and then erase and install again on my internal HD, but I really need my calendar, emails etc from my old HD and not sure they can be found on the old HD to copy over.
    Still stuck!

  • ZIP 250 Internal Drive OK to Install?

I use a Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 Mac (QuickSilver 2002); run OS X 10.5.8 Leopard.  I have an empty bay just below my standard optical drive.  If memory serves me, that empty bay was filled with a stock 250 Zip Internal Drive on my model Mac. I found an internal zip drive that might work in my Mac, on eBay.
    Enclosed please see pictures.
If the above mentioned zip drive doesn't come with installation instructions, do you know where I might find some? It appears that all the installation hardware is included in this offer on eBay.

All of the installation hardware to which that internal Zip drive is attached can't be used in any Apple computer that had an optional Zip drive.  This includes the beige G3s, B&W G3s, and G4s.  Apple always designed its own mounting sleds/carriers, that were tailored to their specific chassis builds.  PCs have used a standardized form factor for some time, which eliminates the headaches often encountered when working with older Apple computers.  In the photos, the bottom piece of steel is a mounting sled taken from a PC chassis, and these did vary from case to case.  Attached to that sled is the Iomega 5.25" carrier with bezel, for installing a Zip drive in a PC's optical drive bay.  If you were installing the Zip drive in a 3.5" bay, you'd remove the drive from the carrier and install it directly.  This is what you'll be doing in your G4, because your Quicksilver has a drive carrier in which the optical drive and (optional) Zip drive are installed.  This carrier must be removed from the computer chassis, in order to remove the Zip drive carrier from the underside of the optical drive carrier.  The (4) mounting screws that attach the carrier to the chassis must be removed, in order to slide the carrier back and out, so you can disconnect the ribbon cable and power cable connections.  The optical drive's ribbon cable has a piece of silver tape, that is stuck to the top of the drive carrier, that you must carefully remove for reuse.  With the drive carrier out of the computer, the Zip carrier slides back a little to disengage it from the underside of the optical drive carrier.  Make sure that the configuration jumper on the back of the Zip drive is set for "slave," which is Iomega's default setting.  The Zip drive itself is installed in/removed from the carrier from the front and is secured with (4) machine screws.  Place the Zip carrier on the underside of the optical drive carrier and slide it forward to lock it in place.  Installation of the drive carrier is the reverse of the removal procedure.  If your Quicksilver originally had a Zip drive installed, there would be a grey Zip bezel (with a slot cut out for disk insertion) installed on the face of your computer, below the optical drive door.  If your Quicksilver's face has a blank cover installed there, it's unlikely that a Zip drive was ever installed.  Either type of bezel is removed from the face of the computer by pressing in on the bezel's release tab (right side of bezel, located just inside the computer chassis, near the Zip carrier) and swinging it out, until the left side of the bezel unhooks.  You can use the Zip drive without the Quicksilver Zip bezel - it just gives it a finished appearance.  Used bezels can still be found at eBay, but whatever you do, don't buy a new one from "We Love Macs Money."  They seem to think that scarcity is justification to charge prices that always exceed the market value of the target computer, into which the small part is to be installed.
Keep in mind that Zip drives had a design flaw that caused what has been called "click death," and this defect ruined disks and made the drive unusable.  From what I read, disks that were damaged in a problematic drive could damage the read/write heads, when inserted into a functioning drive.  This problem seemed to be more common with the Zip 100 drives than the Zip 250 models, but don't count on that.  If I were you, I'd prefer to purchase a new (old stock) drive, because you never know how much service life is left in a used drive.  And given the effort required for installation of an internal drive, I'd again recommend purchasing an external USB Zip 250 drive.
