My O key isn't responding, MacBook 1,1 original 13 in.

Greetiings,
My "O" key donesn't respond.  Entire rest of keypad works just fine. I took key apart but all plastic looks good. I cleaned it.  When I push rubber boot button nothing happens.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this? (Other than a wireless keypad- which I already have but since my Bluetooth decides when and where it wants to work- or not- that option isn't great.
MacBook 1,1   13 in.
Thanks for helping!!

Hello there, Jagid0123.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great, in-depth steps for troubleshooting your issue:
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Thanks for reachign out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,
Pedro.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

  • My "caps lock" key and "P" key do not respond on my 2009 macbook pro unibody

I recently bought a used macbook pro for university. When I bought it the guy who had it before me was running windows 7 on the machine. (why ruin a mac with windows software? I have no idea) I love macs and everything about them so I decided to wipe the hard drive clean and run OSX like any other normal mac user... well now the "caps lock" and "P" keys do not respond at all!!! I've checked my keyboard settings and keyboard and character viewer and its only those keys that do not respond!! Any ideas how I could reset the hardware? (I have a feeling he had to configure the keys to windows software) And yes, I did see the keys work when I bought it!! Does anybody know apples policy on applecare? like what would I need to bring in to redeem it? (I know this computer is warrantied until 2013)

I got the exact same roblem- you can see that, "p" missing in the word problem.
And Caps lock doesn't work either.
A few hours ago, I had problem with Shift keys. They were stuck, I don't know which one but everything would be capatalized and minimizing windows would be very slow. Then the repairman at a Mac Support center (authorized reseller, no Apple stores here) took off the back cover and cleaned a small chord or something and the Shift problem vanished and this one appeared. The guy thinks it's related to keyboard- must be!- and I need to change it. Could there be any other option?
ps: I copied and pasted all the 'p's in this piece.

  • IMessage on MacBook Air isn't responding

For two days now, my iMessage on my MacBook Air isn't responding. I keep trying to restart my laptop, and tried to shut down everything then start my laptop up again. I did log out of my iCloud account and log back in, and I did force quit the application as well but that didn't work either... Any suggestions?

Check your settings in System Preferences > Trackpad then select the Point & Click tab.

  • MacBook Pro: Keys won't respond

On my MacBook Pro, two of my keys won't respond: the "1" key and the "delete" key. I looked under them and it is clean. Can it be fixed/repaired/replaced?

    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, contact Apple.

  • Messages isn't responding

The Messages application on my Macbook Pro doesn't open up. Whenever I try to it says, "Messages isn't responding." How can I solve this problem?

    Hi,
If one User on the Mac has an issue using the app then the fault lies with that Users Set up.
This could be .plists for the App.
It could be whether the User has Read and Write permissions  of those files and the Folder that contain them.
In the case of Yosemite this includes a Read & Write "route"  or Sandboxing that protects the rest of the system from issue with the app.
The issues can be with the way the Mac is set up.
DNS server info in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab should be external to your LAN and not the router's IP address.
The Date and Time  settings should use the Automatic Time Server.
We mentioned the AppleGothic Font  but others like Helvetica Neue and Lucida Grande also need to be enabled.
As well as checking those setting do this:-
In a Finder Window use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key and selecting the Library that appears.
In the View Menu select the Show Path Bar.
    Now navigate to /Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Preferences
(you will see most of the .plist here are Aliases - they point to the actual files in ~/Library/Preferences)
Right Click on the Preferences icon in the Path Bar and select Get Info.
In the Info Panel scroll to the bottom.
It should list the Name next to the Little House Icon in the Path Bar (shortname)
This should have READ and WRITE permissions.
If you select the Line  and then use  the cogwheel type icon under the list it should have Greyed out Text saying "Make shortname (me) the Owner" - it will be greyed out if you already own it.
Repeat the above panel part for the Library that is before Preferences and the Data and com.apple.iChat and Containers Folders.
Then click the Containers icon so you are in the folder.
    Navigate to com.apple.soagent/Data/Library/Preferences
Repeat the panel bit for all .plists that are not Aliases  (soagent.plist and all the ones with Messages Helper in the name)
Then again for the Preferences, Library, Data, com.apple.soagent folders.
This is long winded of course  but you may find the offending item early.

  • Keyboard issue - "C" key is intermittently responding

I have a MacBook Pro 15" I bought in January. Yesterday the "c" key began acting funny. I have to press it very hard for it to respond, but not always. Sometimes it seems to work fine, others if I press it with regular pressure it does not respond, but then does if I press it a second time harder. Anyone else have this issue? Any thoughts? Should I take it in to the Genius Bar to have them look at it? I have the firmware keyboard updated so that does not seem to be the problem.
    Thanks!

Hi. I just started encountering this problem with the f key. Bought my MacBook Pro May 13. Did you make a trip to the Genius Bar? If so were they able to help? If not, were you able to find a solution?
    Thanks,
    Andi

  • Safari cannot open the page because the server is not responding, MacBook Air (late 2013) 1.7 GHz

I'm no longer able to listen to a specific radio station on my 13" MacBook Air (mid-2013) via Safari.  I've been listening to this specific radio station using Safari every day for a long time, but for some reason, now, when I click on the appropriate button to listen to the radio, when the new window pops-up, the error message appears that says, "Safari can't open the page because the server where this page is located isn't responding."
Please note that yesterday, I cleared the history and website data, as I had to clean out adware off of my computer (per Mackeeper, which I'm no longer using of course, and per Safari's new thesmartsearch.net that was overriding my search preference of google).  To clean out the adware, I used AdwareMedic.
Any ideas?  Thank you in advance for any help.
    13" MacBook Air (mid-2013), 1.7GHz dual-core Intel i7, 512GB flash storage; 4MB L3 Cache; 8GB of onboard storage 1600Mhz DDR3

Thanks for the update. You might also consider using iTunes and Internet Radio:
Not all radio stations are available though, since they want you to see advertisements in addition to listening to them

  • My Safari isn't responding and I keep getting the rainbow pinwheel. Why is this happening?

I'll open Safari and go to my usual pages, however now when I open it and it's trying to load my homepage, it doesn't really load and then I get the rainbow pinwheel and it just does that until I get fed up and try to close the window. I have tried quitting Safrai in an attempt to kind of re-boot it, but that doesn't do much and instead I have to force quit because the application isn't responding. I have chrome now and this seems to be working perfectly fine, however I like how my Safrai is setup and I don't want to waste time customizing any new browsers.
Also, I have gone through and eliminated cookies and tried to cleam up my safrai but that didn't really do anything.
    Any suggestions?

Quit the application. Force quit if necessary.
Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window:
    curl -I http://www.gamefly.com
Press return. You should almost instantly get several lines of output below what you entered, the first of which begins with something like this:
    HTTP/1.1
If there's no output within ten seconds, consider that a failure. You can then quit Terminal. Post your results.

  • "'", "M", "J", "U", "7" keys randomly stop responding temporarily

    Hi,
I just bought a new Macbook Pro, 2.0ghz, 1 gig ram, 100 gig hd, and I've found that the ',m,j,u, and 7 keys often stop responding. I'm using the 10.4.7 update.
Is this common at all, and if so is there a way to fix it? Non of the other keys seem to have an issue, so i'm not sure if it's a hardware or a software issue.
If anyone has any ideas let me know!
    Thanks.

    Hi Raf,
That fact that it happened when you were re-installing may just be an unhappy coincidence.
This iBook will not be in warranty for this sort of thing, unfortunately. You can try sourcing a replacement keyboard assembly from eBay or from places such as:
    http://www.pbfixit.com/cart/catalog/category14_Keyboards_page2.html
They have no stock at the moment (I just cruised that link), but it's a good place to start. Googling for the part may also help.
The keyboard is easily replaced. Your iBook owner's manual should have sufficient information for this, otherwise try:
    http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/49.0.0.html
    Cheers!
