My old computer can detect my USB when booting, but can't boot Parted

I have an USB with the Parted Magic Linux environment on it made with Unetbootin, which I tried to boot from other computers and works perfectly.
However, I have an old computer that can detect the USB in the boot menu (not only in the setup, also in the "Boot from here" menu), but can't boot from it (it just fails as if there wasn't anything bootable in the USB).
Unfortunately I don't have many more details right now, but does anyone know what is happening?

Sounds like a hardware issue.
I just fought with an old "server" box, with two Xeon iii chips in it.  I KNEW that I had good CD's, and I was pretty certain that everything worked, but simply could not get Arch to boot up.
Finally booted to a diagnostics CD (don't ask which one - it's sorta illegal) and figured out that the CD drive was half-dead, with a lot of IO errors.  Swapped the CD drive, and booted straight into Arch, got it all installed, and on the web.
Like Gusar says, try a different USB stick, then try a different USB port, or even swap out which USB plug you're using inside the box.  Old machines do some strange things when some odd bit of hardware starts going flaky.

It does not magically appear in a new place.  It will only be where you put it.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • I just bought a hp laptop trying to get my itunes from my old computer can someone help me

i am trying to get my itunes library i just bought a HP laptop and I cannot get it i plugged in my ipod but having issues

Please use periods at the end of sentences, so that your writing is easier to understand...
Do you have access to your old computer with its iTunes library intact?  Ideally, you should transfer your complete iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.  Then, iTunes on the new computer will look like iTunes on the old computer, with all of your songs, playlists, etc.  If you can do it that way, please post back for more info.
Otherwise, you will need to off-load song files from the iPod...

  • HT1329 If I cannot access my old computer, can I transfer my music from other sources on my iPod touch to my new PC?

I have purchased a new computer as my previous one can no longer be used. The problem I have is that I have a lot of music on my iPod touch from sources other than the iTunes store purchases.
Can I transfer these files without accessing my old computer? If so, how can I do this?
    Thanks in advance.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a abckup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Haev you failed to backup?  Not good.
You may be able to purchase a third party program to retrieve the music,

  • TS1587 My friend has a G4 that will NOT turn on at all.  The monitor power button will light up, but monitor won't turn on; the the computer power button lights up when pressed but won't stay on and nothing else happens.  He said it USED to at least turn

Anyway, not sure if my question was sent, so here it goes:  My friend's G4 won't power on....the power button lights up briefly when pressed, but nothing happens....and, cannot even get the montior to power on...does the same thing.   He said it used to at least turn on, but now it's doing this.   Help!!??  What should we do??

If you are able to use a multi-meter, you can test to see if the power supply is culprit. Use the Power Mac G4: Power Supply Voltage Test  (Sawtooth G4) document to aide you in the proceedure.
If not the Sawtooth, Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet): Power Supply Voltage Test.
If a Quicksilver, use the pinout of the QS PSU connector here:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/tips/MDDps_mods/MDD_PSMods.html#update
    and a testing description here:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/D275729F-09DA-4FBB-96B3-BEEEB2C 04619.html
The test description is for a MDD, but the basics are the same.
If a MDD,follow my instructions in the linked articl above.
One should also try a PMU reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939
One should also  replace the 1/2 AA PRAM battery.
Also, check that the 20, 22, 24 pin connector is properly fitted to the motherboard, and that the wires are properly inserted in the connector. There is also a 10 wire ribbon, which goes from the motherboard to the power button board. Make sure that the ribbon is firmly connected at both ends, and that there is no apparent damage to the ribbon.
If the power supply tests good in a MDD, the power switch board could be suspect.

  • Iphone4 not detected by computer - does detect other USB devices

I'm having a reccuring problem with my Macbook Pro detecting my iPhone4.  Some details:
    -Running 10.7.4
-The phone is charging but does not show up in iTunes, iPhoto, or in /volumes.
    -I've tried different USB cables.
    -I'ved tried different USB ports
-All software is up to date
    -rebooted phone
    -rebooted mac
    -reinstalled itunes
I've had this problem before recently and deleted itunes/iphoto preferences, reinstalled itunes, rebooted the phone, and rebooted the computer when previously having this problem and it was resolved for a short time but showed up again.  I tried this same order of operations a second time and did not have luck.  So after searching some forums I did the following steps in addition to the previous steps, I trashed AppleMobileDevice.kextfile located in /system/library/extensions, I trashed MobileDevice.framework file located in /system/library/framework.  There was one recommended file to delete that did not exist on my computer: /system/library/launchdaemons and locate the filecom.apple.usbmuxd.plist-orig, granted the instructions I was following was for Mac OSX v10.6, so there is the possibility it may not exist anymore.
Any help or assistance would be great.  I believe it is a software issue and not a hardware issue based on the fact the issues have been resolved a couple of times by trying a shotgun approach to the issue, although I don't know what has actually resolved the problem.  I also feel it's a software issue with the computer and not the phone, although I could very well be wrong.  That said, I am no longer having success in resolving the issue and it's quite frustrating.

I've since resolved the issue.  Apparently the the USB pin on my dock connector had failed.  So while my phone would still charge if a cable was plugged in, it would not sync.  My home button started going shortly afterwards as well.  Bought a new flex cable and dock connector from a parts story for $17 and resolved the problem by replacing the parts myself.  Everything works fine now.

  • Old computer can't download new itunes

I have and old iMac and I can't download the new version of itunes and I can't get the shuffle to work on the old version. It comes up under devices and then says to restore it. When it is restored and the computer restarts it doesn't come back up on itunes. Any suggestions???

No, they don't want to force you to do anything. If you want to stay with a 4 and a half year old OS you are free to do so. Just be careful when you buy any hardware or software to read the minimum requirements and make sure they will work with your computer. If they won't then don't buy them. There are still people out there using OS 9.x.x. They don't write here asking why they can't buy and use an iPhone.
I am fed up of hearing this, for some software it is true - Apple does good by pushing forward and leaving old hardware or old software behind and helps advance technology faster by cutting loose ties with the the things holding it back.
However don't go kidding yourself that this is a technologically limiting situation, this is Apples agenda, a purely superficial limitation - no of course they have no obligation to keep the software that manages ipods working on a 4 year old system, but it will **** off alot of consumers and takes little effort to keep at least the features relevant to syncing new ipods of iTunes 10 backward compatible to a reasonable extent - OS 10.4 is not a million miles different to OS 10.5... iTunes 10 works on windows XP which is 4 years older than OS 10.4 , is a completely different OS and requires much more work to get all of the features working.
The decision of cycling out 10.4 support for new ipods is hardley a technical one.
My sister has been caught in this situation... having been bought a new £40 ipod shuffle her ppc mac which runs 10.4 cannot sync the device, Apple don't sell OS 10.5 anymore and the cheapest on amazon is £125
For someone who buys or is given a £40 device - do you really think they are going to have the latest and greatest mac? or be willing to spend 3 times the price of the device to make their computer compatible?
I suggested that my sister use another family members older pc from the 90's that uses windows XP to sync her iPod instead - all they are doing to people with older macs is forcing them away, don't assume everyone with a mac is stinking rich - one of the top 3 things most mac users say as a reason for buying mac is their longevity (from both a hardware and software point of view) - it's difficult to justify that longevity when apple want to ignore every model and OS they release that is not current.

  • Signed out of old computer can't sign in on new

I have signed out on one computer and then downloaded Photoshop onto my new machine but sign in failed warning comes up saying that my ID is already used on 2 computers and retry I have already signed out of one of them fails.
    Macbook Pro

When you install it on the third computer or for the third time & when you to activate it, if it installed & activated already twice, there will be an option of deactivating it from the previous computers, please click on that.
Next it will allow you to activate on your new machine,
Now you can go back to your first computer, log out & log back in of Desktopp CC App, launch any product, if there is any product to buy, in that prompt there will be an option to " license the software", please click on that & sign in.
It will reactivate the CC on the first machine.
If CC is accessible on the previous computer then you need to deactivate from any one of them
    Activation & Deactivation Help
You have already deactivated it from one machine, hence you can activate it on third computer.

  • I Copied iPhoto library from old computer, can't access in new one

I am a moving my data from an old Mac where I was using iPhoto 6. This computer is running iLife 08. When I try to open my old iPhoto library (which has now been copied onto my new hard drive) I press Option when opening iPhoto, and try to choose my old library, it is grayed out. What else should I be doing?

I am adding some more information: I have copied the entire library folder straight onto the new HD, I have every file, including the Library6.iPhoto to make sure I would keep the albums and calendars, etc. (a couple of yearas ago I had to recreate a library since I had not backed up, so I learned my lesson the hard way). What's should I try next?

  • I am switching jobs, iTunes is on my old computer - can I move my music to a new computer? how?

I've been at my current job for over 8 years. I have iTunes installed on my work computer, and now I am leaving. I have an iPad at home - I think my husband already has his iTunes account set up on that though. I'd like to get access to all the music I've purchased through the years on the iPad or my new work computer - is this even possible?  Please let me know what to do.
    Thanks!

You can backup your iTunes library to an external drive and onto a new computer

  • My 40gb can be played but Itunes says it is corrupt.  I want to get the music off the Ipod onto my new computer, old computer died which had all the data on it (crap on my behalf I know)  Anyone know how to do this?

My hard drive is corrupt even though I can listen to the music on the Ipod.  Itunes says it is corrupt so obviously cannot read it properly.  You can hear the disk reader resetting every few seconds preventing the data recovery.
We can see the track listings and playlists which we used for our wedding in 2005 and desperately want them back.
Sadly we lost the hard drive that had Itunes on it with all our music which we dont have a back up of.
Is there anyway it can be repaired and then we get the music off the Ipod and get it back on a new pc....and back it up of course?!!!

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.
