My Old iPod freezes mid-song

I have a 40Gb circa 2003 (old-age generation!!) iPod, while using out and about, it freezes mid-song, runs down battery and switches off. When I connect via dock at home, all OK, it recharges and plays through my iMac OK. But it will lock up if I try to play remotely! Please Help! Will it be expensive to repair or does it just need a new battery? (Like my hearing aid - those batteries never last this long!)
Thanks
Lynn

Try disabling hard disk use.
(Itunes -> Edit -> Preferences -> Ipod -> General)
I've tried most of the answers suggested on these discussion boards - I've restored to factory settings (several times), I've tried running chkdsk on the Ipod from Windows XP, I've rolled back to ITunes v4 (the one on the cd I got with the Ipod) and none of them worked.
Then I just unchecked the box to allow the Ipod to be used as a hard disk and (so far) that seems to have done the trick (I've played several albums without any skipping or freezing so far).
I'm still on Itunes v4. I'll try upgrading to v5 or v6 and see if it still works.
Good luck.

  • Ipod freezing mid song

I am noticing an issue with my ipod here lately. It is freezing up right in the middle of a song and my screen goes black with the white Apple logo. Pressing buttons doesn't do anything. After about 1 minute it automatically goes back to the playlist screen. What might be causing this to happen?

    Try a Reset:
Hold Play/Pause and Menu buttons together for 6-10 seconds.
    or
Hold Menu and Center Select buttons for 6-10 seconds.

  • My Ipod keeps freezing mid song

Hiya i have a 6th gen nano, which keeps freezing during songs. This has just started over the past couple of days. Anybody know what i can do to stop/fix this?
    Many thanks

in the new version of software the ipod now requires that you fully connect the headphones before use because alot of people would be jogging and if it came off of the clip the ipod would immediatly would fall to the floor and crack and since accidental damage is not covered apple just made sure to give a warning if they are not using it correctly
you may also notice that the fm radio may not work or can't find a signal, connecting the headphones all of the way will solve this issue as well
    just look at this example

  • IPod freezes mid-way through tracks

starting this morning, my iPod started randomly freezing mid-way through tracks. the track will continue to play, but the bar tracking the duration stops advancing. when the track ends it stops. when i touch the buttons or wheel nothing happens. to play music again i have to reset the ipod. sometimes it repeats this problem in an hour, sometimes i get several hours of use before it freezes again.
this happened with my previous ipod, in early 2006, and after a month the internal disc stopped working and i had to trade it in and buy this one. can i fix it now, or am i doomed to lose an ipod a year, just after the warranty ends?

  • IPod skips mid-song

I have had this problem with just about every iPod I have had (5gb gen.2, 15gb gen.3, 40gb gen.4 and now 60gb gen.5). I will be listening to music and half way through a song it will jump to the next song ~ a bit annoying. Anyone else have this probelm and know why?

    Hi Deb,
There seems to be a problem with the 5th Gen Ipod with skipping songs.
    I am experiencing it.
Dont worry about the Dhead that wrote earlier, he does not know what he is talking about.
I have 2 x 5th Gen Ipods and both are doing it.
While my 2 x 4th 40GB Ipods are working fine! both are using the same iTunes and same song files, so it cant be the song files nor itunes otherwise I would experience it with my 40GB 4th Gen's.
Apple needs to have this resolved!
Hopefully they will bring out a update shortly, til then we have to wait.
Ps - The 2 x 5th Gens were sent back and replaced and the replacements are doing it so it must be a fault with ALL 5th Gens

  • If your ipod freezes, skips songs, and wont load, read this

ok, i have a 4th gen 40gb ipod which worked fine until i upgraded to itunes 5. now my ipod shows a folder with !, songs skip, and it freezes after 5 songs.disk mode didnt help either, as it didnt show up on my computer even though the ipod displayed do not disconnect. I found a fix for it. it sounds dangerous and crude, but it worked for me, and some other people. plug your ipod into your computer and it will say dont disconnect, and your comp probably will be locked up like normal until ipod loads, then take your ipod, and hit it on its side on a hard surface. do it while you hear the Hard drive spinning. NO JOKE. my ipod started working right after. however, the sound is really crappy now, but i was at least able to backup my files, and i'm going to use my warrenty to get a new one. the reason this works is beacuse somehoew the hd pin is out of place, and you can hear it clicking. hitting it will get it back in place. i know this sounds crazy, but trust me, it will stop skipping songs and freezing, and will appear on your computer. I warn you however, if you break your ipod doing this, dont blame me, i'm just saying this because it worked for me. give it a try if nothing else works. hope this helps. itunes 5 was really bad. anyone know where to get itunes 4.9, that was fine for me, and i had a separate podcasting program anyway.

    Hi Mark,
I tried entering the serial number onto the apple website, but it says my iPod had not been registered (although I have registered it!).
Anyway, I phoned apple support and they told me to go to depot.info.apple.com/ipod and fill in a service request. Unfortunately it said that my iPod is out of warranty, so I had to phone again to get them to update their records about the and they are sending out a service box in the next few days
I think I'm definately going to take out the applecare service now!

  • 8 year old iPod widows  format Songs be downloaded to iTunes to a Mac computer

iPod 8 years old formated to widows. Can songs  from this iPod be downloaded to iTunes on my Mac ?

See Corrupt iPod classic. Start at the top for media recovery advice. If the file system hasn't been corrupted you may be able to get the media off without too much trouble. If the file system appears empty even when hidden files and system files are shown there is a possibility of recovery using unerase tools.

  • Ipod freezes between songs

Often my iPod takes a minute or two between songs. After one song finishes, the screen shows the next one, stuck at 0:00 for anwhere between 1 and 2 minutes. It also freezes sometimes when I push play at the top of a playlist.

I'm getting the same issues... ipod completely freezes for about 2-3 mins between some songs and its just done it again hence me finding this post after googling it! Not sure what the problem is. Did you manage to sort it? Am thinking it might need restoring to factory defaults. I have the 5th Gen (2005) classic ipod.

  • After 1.2.3 update, Ipod freezes playing songs and is SLOW

Hello, I updated my 5th Generation to 1.2.3 with Itunes at the latest level. Now the Ipod plays for awhile and then pauses for 30 seconds and then continues playing the song. It also takes about a minute for a playlist to begin playing. All worked well before 1.2.3. I've tried reset and restore. I even reformatted the Ipod (fat32 2048k) and then restored. No luck. It appears there are no useful instructions to reload 1.2.1 with the latest Itunes and Windows Vista. If an Apple person happens to read this, I sure would like to go back to 1.2.1 to see if this problem continues.

First, for safety, do a quick diagnostic of the iPod.
You can do this by starting a sync as usual with iTunes, then enabling Disk Use. Now, go to Utilities/Disk Utility on your desktop, and perform a diagnostic - it should take only a few seconds. Now, go back onto iTunes and Disable Disk Use (so you can take your cable out).
As long as you have the iTunes desktop up, click Check for Updates, and then Update. (They update thee software every month.)

  • I have an old iPod that has songs on it from a different computer/itunes-.

I want to add these songs to my new iTunes account. Can I do that without losing songs?

    See:
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device: Apple Support Communities
You can only copy them to a computer/iTunes library. You can't add them to your iTunes account. Accounts can't be merged.

  • Noticed that Safari is running slow and sticking during the loading process.  Also iTunes is freezing mid-song.  Is there a bug or have I finally gotten a virus?

Is this happening to anyone else?

Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts? Click on the Disk Usage tab, how much free space?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • IPod froze up mid song

My iPod stopped mid song and nothing I have tried will make it move. I have tried resetting it, charging it and plugging it into the computer. Nothing helps. The screen is just frozen mid song with the info exactly as it was when it stopped. The lock button is not on, however, the screen still shows it is because it was on when it froze. What else can I try before I throw it out the window.

well mine is working for the moment. when it happened i tried to reset it by holding down menu and play at the simultaneously, numerous times and it stayed frozen, then plugged it into the ac adapter and tried again with no luck. so then i had to go to work so i unplugged it and left it sitting all night and when i came home in the morning it had gone blank. i tried to reset it again which brought up the battery icon but nothing else happened so i plugged it in to the ac adapter again and tried the reset thing again and this time it worked, I let it fully charge and it has been working okay since, hope this helps! by the way this was a 20g click wheel ipod.

  • Ipod will not turn off mid song?

I'm having a problem turning my ipod off mid-song, I could do it until yesterday and now it makes me exit out of an album and pause it in the main menu? Does anyone know why and how to resolve the issue?

Problem solved. Just reset and works fine.

  • I have an iPod that has music from CD's that I no longer have. The iPod was synced to an old computer that crashed. My current iPhone and my old iPod share an itune's account. Is there a way I can transfer my music from my old iPod to my new computer?

I have an old iPod touch with songs from CD's I no longer have (so they weren't purchased on iTunes). The computer that the songs were synced on crashed a while ago. Is there a way I can sync my old iPod to my new computer and retrieve those songs to get them on my new iPhone? They share an Apple ID and iTuens account.

    Most Windows users don't.
Purchase an external hard drive and use the backup software that comes with it to backup files from your computer.
Buy TouchCopy and install it on your new computer, connect your old iPod and transfer your songs to your computer.

  • I had an iPod Classic 5th Gen that I upgraded from 30gb to 80gb.  The problem I'm having is that it will not more than about 5.4gb worth of songs.  The iPod begins to freeze mid sync and the (-69) error message haults the sync.

I had an iPod Classic 5th Gen that I upgraded from 30gb to 80gb.  The problem I'm having is that it will not sync more than about 5.4gb worth of songs.  The iPod begins to freeze mid sync and the (-69) error message haults the sync process.  The hard drive has been upgraded, it has a new logicboard (with 128mb RAM), new housing, battery, hold / headphone jack.  Basically the only original parts are the bezel, click wheel, screen, and data ribbons. Have attempted the 3Rs and have also tried to isolate potentially corrupt audio files and remove them, but this did not seem to be the primary cause.  The sync failure consistently happens at just under a 1000 songs (5.4gb) and then it starts to error (-69) any song after that.  Your advise would be enthusiastically received.

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.
