My old iPods/now hard drives

I have a question about my 20Gb iPod. Will S.M.A.R.T. status work with it? I saw on System Profiler that it is unknown. I use my oldest iPod as a portable external hard drive. It is great for using Backup 3.0, and backing up my Prefs, Purchased Music, and things of that extent. The other thing I was wondering is I have another old iPod that was given to me, I was thinking about turning it into a OS X bootable hard drive. Would it be worth it, just incase something happened while I am traveling. I am constantly traveling. Any real benefits? I know it eventually will wear the hard drive down faster then normal, but it would be for emergencies. I don't like carrying my Install/Restore DVDs.

Moving from old to new hard drive, some songs lost track number in file nam

Anyone have thoughts on this? I changed to a larger hard drive a month ago. Copied everything over and things seemed OK. Synced daughter's ipod and things started acting weird. I compared old to new hard drive now and a bunch of songs are missing from the new drive but weirder is that some songs lost the track numebr in the name on the new drive - 04 loving.mp3 is now loving.mp3.
we can't find a pattern to why those specific songs are like that. any thoughts?

I am getting a new computer and I know I can transfer my music on my old computer to my new one with a hard drive but me and brother currently share an account and I would like my own, once I get a new computer can I make a new account on my new itunes and still be able to keep my old music and be able to sync it and play it etc?? The music sync is one one way - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases. File>Transfer Purchases

hello i have tried about 5 times now to use my ipod as hard drive..it keeps giving me an error for a song saying "the parameter is incorrect". I don't know what to do, when it happened to one of the songs i deleted it..bc i don't listent it but i need a way to do this process without deleting the songs i like.

No, you didn't screw up your iPod. It sounds like you may have to restore it, which will wipe out all data on it so make sure you have it backed up somewhere. Restoring is an easy process and it should fix your problem. The link below tells you how to do that. Good luck.

I think you can get Windows 7 for around $99. Install the 64bit version as the 32bit version will not be able to use all your new computer's ram if you have more than about 3.5gb.
Back up your quick books data now before the old hard drive dies. You can copy your data over to your new installation of Windows and quick books.

First of all I'm quite a novice with regards to my ipod, so please bare with me. I have a new computer because my old computer's hard drive crashed. How can I get my songs from my ipod on to my new computer?

Old iphoto library from an old computer's hard drive doesn't open anymore

My old computer broke some time ago, but I got the hard drive saved with its iPhoto library. I used to be able to open the old iPhoto from the old computer's hard drive with my new computer connecting them, but now it says that the old iPhoto cannot be opened because I have to update to a newer version, but the only button I can press is 'quit'. So I don't know how to get a newer version of iPhoto to my old hard drive or how to get the pictures out of the old iPhoto. I have a separate iPhoto in my new computer.
When I press 'show content' of the old iPhoto, there are no pictures anywhere.
Please help, I have my old pictures there!

Petra, do you mean, you opened the old iPhoto application from the old computer on your new computer or did you open the iPhoto Library?
If you have a newer iPhoto version on your new computer, try to open your old iPhoto Library with the newer iPhoto version on your new Mac.
What was the old iPhoto version on the old Mac, and which version do you have now? And which version of MacOS X?
If you now have iPhoto 9.5.1 on your new computer, launch this version while holding down the options key (sometimes called alt key). This will bring up the library chooser panel. Select the old library on your old drive. iPhoto should offer to upgrade the library., unless your old library has been created by a very old iPhoto version.
If the old library had been created with iPhoto '08 or earlier, you need first to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader to prepare the library.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. I don't think Apple will do that repair for you, because the iPod is too old. I believe the hard drive type used in 4th gen and older iPods is no longer produced. There may be non-Apple shops who can do the repair, but they may be using a working part salvaged from a used iPod.

NOTE: There are two hard drive physical sizes. The thick version has two platters, and corresponds to the "thick" iPods (with double storage capacity). A 4th gen 20GB model should be the thin version. The hard drive used in iPods up to 4th gen should work interchangeably, but 5th gen and later iPods use a different type.
I have a 4th gen iPod that started out as a 20GB. The hard drive failed, so I put a compact flash card on an adapter in there. The adapter is like this one (I bought it a few years ago so it's probably not the same seller)

The compact flash card is standard; I bought the cheapest one. I currently have an 8GB card in there, but prices have come down, so I may get a 64GB card soon. It works great with the 8GB card. No more hard drive spin-up delay. Battery lasts longer. It's lighter. And it should be more shock resistant.
The only mod I needed to make on the adapter was to bend over two pins 90º, where you place a jumper to set the drive to "master." The adapter plus CF card is actually smaller and thinner than just original 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive; I used some thin foam packing material (cut to the right shape) to take up the excess space and ensure the adapter and card did not become disconnected.
The 4th gen iPod has excellent sound, compared to some later iPods.

If you do not have a back up of the crashed hard drive you can download an app to copy from the iPhone to iTunes on the new hard drive.
I have used Pod2Mac. There is also Pod2PC.
There are numerous choices, some free, some payed. Do a Google search.

There nothing we can suggest to save a bad iPod hardisk, except to try some 3rd Party software to try repair the Hardisk.

You may already be using the iPod in manual update mode in which case you can ignore the rest of this post. In manual mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased. However if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, on Windows, hold down Shift + Ctrl. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
