My old Mac no longer connects to network. ideas?

I have an awesome old cube that I use to connect to the network and play music for the room it's in using the tunes library from another computer. My problem is that since I changed to a static IP on my network, I can no longer see the LAN. It connects fine to the WAN through the cable modem, which it's plugged into via ethernet, but it only uses DHCP for it to work. When I manually enter the modem's ip, (gateway/router), it gives me an error that the address is not on this computer's subnet anywhere and to change the address.
It is a long, long way to the other computer, so wiring directly is not an option. It used to connect fine with the same setup, when I had a dynamic address system. Here's my setup:
Comcast cable modem - coax to the net
Airport express - ethernet to the modem. Only one ethernet port
several wireless computers connect via Airport
Cube is plugged into cable modem via ethernet
Cube is on OS X 10.3.9 and has no wireless capability
I've tried using the subnet comcast gave me and also the basic DHCP subnet mask, but neither work. I've even tried to use the static ip of the airport ex as the router, but no.
What am I missing? I guess I could get an airport extreme, and use the extra ethernet port to connect and that would work, but I kind of think there should be a no cost solution here.
Thanks for any help,
DD

Hi Dennas,
Not sure what numbers you're using, but it sounds as if you might be confusing the Outside IP with the internal Router's IP, not sure.
Generally the one you want to use will start with 192.168.x.y, or 10.0.x.y, then it'd look something like this...
IP: 192.168.0.9
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.0.1
or...
IP: 10.0.0.9
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.0.0.1
All Computers should have the same Router IP & Subnet Mask, but only the 1st 3 numbers of the IP are the same, the 4th number has to be different, & if Static you need to set that 4th number higher than the number of computers connected+1 so DHCP ones won't get duplicate IPs.
Does that get us any closer?

Mac is not connecting to network systems with names.
It's only connecting with the IP address why?

It sounds like a problem with the domain name server. Be sure you are using the correct DNS in System Preferences > Network, and if you are make sure it is functioning correctly.
    Best of luck.

  • Mac Pro no longer connects to network via ethernet.

Since coing back from Thanksgiving break and my Mac Pro 1,1 will no longer connect to my router through via ethernet.  This means I can neither connect to internet nor connect to devices like my laptop and Apple TV.  Strangely, I can still connect to my Mac Pro from these devices to share screen, play audio/video through iTunes, etc.  In Network Settings, I still have a green dot, and I still get an IP address assigned (though I usually use a fixed IP).  If I go into my router (Netgear WNDR4000), the router tells me that the Mac Pro 1,1 is connected to the network.
I already have tried the following solutions:
    · Restarting router, modem, and computer
    · Making a new location in Network Settings
    · Trying different ethernet ports
    Please Help!

Your local LAN runs through your router.
All your ethernet  ports, and your modem and router, should be behind and filtered from excess current. That means a UPS generally. And run input line thru UPS (coax) first, then run RJ45 back through UPS again (there can still be excess surge or current on the line).
Modems and routers can be compromised by surge outage or storm. So can ethernet  ports.
You have two ethernet ports and you tried with both also.
What you did not do that I would have added is SMC Reset / Reset NVRAM/PRAM.
This is what I have had for the last year, very nice and stronger  signals thruout the house.

  • I recently installed itunes update and can no longer connect to network nor internet

I recently (sept 2013) installed itunes update and can no longer connect to a network nor internet wired /wireless. I know it is not the gateway as other devices work. Please help. I am not very knowledgable so exact instructions will be most helpful.

Try connecting your computer/laptop directly to the base station with an ethernet cable to one of the external ports and install your network settings. If it finds it there, it will find it after you've reloaded your network info to the base via the Apple Utility. Hopefully when you disconnect afterward, all will be fine. Be sure not to select "closed" network although Macs will login with no prolem, PC's have trouble doing so even with the network data stored in the internet settings.
    Good luck!

  • Can no longer connect to network server after upgrading dsl modem

While I was working on a file that resides on a network server, the router was powered down so on reboot it would communicate with a dsl modem . After the router was power up I could not reconnect to the server.
    I have internet access
The mini can see the server in the finder and the server sees the mini
This is not a wireing issue.
When I try to connect I get this message:
"The file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP Protocol. You cannot connect"
The server is an old mac running os 9.1. I've read that 9.1 is not compatible with 10.4.8. But it worked just fine this morning.
There are other macs (cubes) running 9.2 I can connect to them.
I've tried restarting and logging on as a differernt user. no change

    Thanks for your help
I made no changes to the mini or the server.
The router was shut down then on restart the new (replaced modem) was configured by using another mac on the network (not the file server)
Once the router and modem were online again, other macs running 9.2 were accessing the file server as usual. The mini was not.
I had been working on a file that resides on the server. I was not warned that the router was going to be shut down. When I saved the file I got the beach ball then error message.
It'll be next week before I'm in the office agin. I'll report back then. Thanks

  • Time Machine will no Longer connect to network drive.. Although the drive is visible and accessible by the system.

Time Machine was working fine, until one day back up was failing due to being unable to delete the old backup. now it will no longer connect to the network drive although the external drive is accessible through the system.. any ideas?

Time Machine is completely unrlable on any networked drive unless that drive is connected to one of the new Airport Extremes. I'm not surprised that you're encountering problems with it if you're using a networked drive. Can you plug the drive into your MacBook Pro and see if it will backup? The backups may - probably are - corrupt.

  • Configurator, iPads update iOS will no longer connect to network

Managing 30 iPad 4s with Bretford cart, Mac Mini.
On a recent update to iOS 7.0.4, it seems that not all of my iPads took it nicely. Only 3 worked like I expected in fact, and function as they did before. 27 others will no longer connect to the network I had deployed as a package in Configurator. In fact, they went back to the beginning welcome / setup screen for the OS reload.
Is there something that I can try before I just set these all to erase and re-prepare them?

Update: I unplugged all, and manually plugged in one iPad.
I unsupervised, and prepared it again, reloaded all the apps, and got the same result.
Once the iPad shows up in Configurator as prepared, and in my supervised list, it seems good to go: BUT
as soon as I turn it on, it shows me the "Hello" welcome screen, asks to join the network, and seems to freeze. The iPad goes to sleep without it receiving a connection.

  • Apple TV can no longer connect to network after upgrade.

I had heard that lots of people were affected with this problem with the software upgrade before this one so I deliberately waiting until this one came out before taking a chance. I was wrong.
After updating to 4.4. (3140) I can no longer connect to my network. It says there was a problem and gave the error messaged number: (5) in brackets.
I've had nothing but problems with both Apple TV's that I have owned, version 1 and this new version 2. I've a good signal from my router and I've used three different ones over the time I've had the two apple tvs.
    Anyone got any ideas.
I can't connect the apple tv directly because they are too far apart in the house. I can only connect by wifi.
There is nothing wrong with my wifi because I'm connected to it fine though my imac, iphone and ipad and laptop, (not all at the same time)

Ok, here's a solution, courtesy of our friends at AppleCare.
Unplug the router for 90 seconds.
I was running ATV2 with a Time Capsule.   The TC thought the ATV was still connected using its former IP address so wouldn't let it reconnect with a new one.
Hope this works for anyone else with same problem.

  • Apple tv no longer connected to network

So as of last night I can longer connect my apple tv to the network
I have restarted the apple tv, I have restarted my router, I have moved location of my apple tv and still get "Apple TV isn't connect to the network"
When I go to the network section it says I have no strength and when I try to connect it comes up with "There was a problem connecting to the network"
I have ipad, ipod and laptop that are all connection without any issues.
Does anyone know why it all of a sudden stopped working.  We have had it for almost 1 year and none of these issues
Interestingly enough if I stay on the about Apple TV section ... signal strength will come back for 5-6 seconds then disappear again???
    Thanks

    zfrommelbourne,
Sounds very strange... You can try this solution below:
The list of available networks that displays in the Configure Wi-Fi / Configure Wireless screen does not update automatically when new resources become available in range of your Apple TV. To refresh the list:
    Press the Menu button.
Navigate to Settings > General > Network > Configure Wi-Fi (or Configure Wireless on Apple TV 1st generation).
Press Select/Play/Pause to display a refreshed list of available networks.

  • Core i7 no longer connecting to network

I received my Core i7 a couple of weeks ago. It's wireless connection to the Internet worked fine at first, then after a few days the computer wasn't finding the network and required my password (which worked at first), then a few days/reboots later, the network interface stopped taking my password at all and now I'm not able to connect to the Internet with the i7.
My other two iMacs on the network -- Core Duo's running Tiger -- still connect wirelessly with network fine.
I called AppleCare and the tech told me that the Quest Actiontec DSL modem I'm using has WEP security, which she said is too old and vulnerable for the new i7 technology and that WEP is no longer supported by Apple.
I'm in the process of trying to change the security settings on the Actiontec modem from WEP to WPA (as per AppleCare's recommendation), and at the same time I'm looking into upgrading to a router to interface with the modem.
Considering this, which routers are recommended: Airport Express, Airport Extreme, 3rd parties?
Any feedback to help find a solution to get my i7 reliably reconnected to the Internet would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Whether the problem with your network is being caused by the router or the wireless card I'd still upgrade your wireless security settings. WEP has been mentioned as a problem with several users on this forum in the last year or so.
WEP has been childs-play to crack since about 2003? Anybody can download a free sniffer program and figure out the password in less that a minute. I first saw this done on the old TechTV show with Leo Laporte. They used a high school kid to demonstrate how easy this is...
Just about any currently shipping router supports WPA2-PSK (Password Shared Key), and you can use a long password for added security (no words in the dictionary, throw in some numbers, and the longer the better). Your new Mac will support N speeds and N routers are required to provide that speed. The routers will also support the slower G speed your other Mac's may be limited to. WPA2-PSK has not been cracked and is now supported with even WinXP if you have SP3 installed.
I put in a couple wireless routers or hubs a month. I've been having good luck with Belkin routers (only one has failed in the last 3 or 4 years). They are fairly simple to set up. I just throw away the disk and log into the default gateway address and set them up manually.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/belkin-n-wireless-router/4505-3319_7-33361546.ht ml
I usually pick up this kind of item at NewEgg.com
This router also has a neat feature of being able to provide a guest password for wireless for internet access but no access to other machines on the network, or full access to the internet and your other machines with a different password. I've set this up in a couple of coffee house/bars so that they can provide internet access but not open their machines up to visitors.

  • Macbook pro retina (1 month old) can no longer connect to Wifi

First of all I love my new mac, had no problems with it so far, and it's more than adequate for my requirements. However came to connect to my Mum's home network today (my iPhone and her windows desktop are connected right now so I know there's no problem with the ISP) and it won't connect, even though I've typed and re-typed the password a million times over. Was thinking initially she's changed the password without telling me, but I know that can't be the case because a) she's a technophobe and b) my iPhone wouldn't automatically connect (it was 3 months since the last time I was over). Then what struck me is last night I had similar issues round a friend's house where I've never connected before, but then so did he with his Macbook Pro (3 years old). However we reset the router and went to bed and this morning his worked fine; mine still nothing. The last time I succesfully connected to a network was on Friday, on the train down here, when I was tethering my iPhone's 3g connection. Could this be something to do with it? I've tried running network diagnostics several times but it never gets to the second stage as it can't connect to this network, which considering I'm using right now, I can assure you is running perfectly smoothly. The main error message I seem to be receiving both today and yesterday is 'connection timeout'. Is there a possibility I have somehow disabled my wifi connectivity? I can't seem to see where though. Having just purchased the mac I would've of course contacted applecare, but rather frustatingly they're closed on Sunday's and with a 3000 word report on HR Management that I need to finish today I can't afford to wait until 8am tomorrow, and I'd really appreciate some help beforehand so I don't have to complete my work on this ancient, virus-riddled pc!!
    Many Thanks Folks!
    Ryan, Norwich, UK

By Jove, after a couple of hours of stress I think I've just cracked it; I went onto System Preferences> Network> Advanced and then simply deleted a couple of networks I've connected to only once but won't need again and then it seemed to do to the trick. So it looks like you can only store upto 10 networks; I'm astonished it doesn't appear to say this anywhere in the manual!? Maybe it's too obvious and I'm an idiot for not already possessing this knowledge but come on, considering the box 'remember this network' is automatically ticked, surely this is a problem that your average user is going to experience rather frequently. How hard would it be for Apple to introduce an error message along the lines of 'maximum number of saved networks exceeded... Please delete one or more saved networks...'!? As for the applecare centre being closed, it would've been really useful if the sales rep could've mentioned this simple fix; It would have taken all of 10 seconds and would've saved me a lot of time and frustration.
It would be nice if this discovery helps others, but perhaps I should really be apologising for stating common knowledge. Well I guess the lesson here is what I already knew; the more you experiment with OS X the more you learn. Thanks to anyone who may have helped, back to the work now ....

  • HP 1102W no longer connects to network

After many months of trouble-free use, I can no longer print from my laptop (Toshiba Satellite E 105-S1402).  Each job ends with "Error printing."  I downloaded the Diagnostic Utility (which told me my printer was not found on the network). The first self test page said I was connected but said the IPv4 address and the Gateway address were the same (not good?).  I thought the drivers might need updating.  So I tried to a wireless installation of the software but the URL would not load.  Then I did a USB installation.  But that did not help. I still cannot print.  And I must have pressed the wrong buttons, because now the self test shows 0.0.0.0 for both (and the IP configure is now "Manual" instead of AutoIP.) The blue wireless light is NOT illuminated; when I push it I get a fluttering light that eventually disappears. In short, everything is worse.  I am running Windows Vista 64 bit with Service Pack 2.
Can anyone help a poor old technoprimitive? Thank you.

The product you have is a commercial printer. I suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support for a better chance at finding a solution.

  • Old AE no longer joining the network.

I have a mixed network consisting of a new AE dual band, an old AE, a recent AX and an older AX. Everything has been coexisting nicely until today. I had a brief power outage. The whole network came back except for the old AE, which was used as a print server.
I have reset it and tried to have it join the AE dual band as it had been in the past. No joy. I can connect to the AX via AirPort Utility, program it to join the AE dual band network but after it resets, it no longer is visible.
    Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Is the light on it green after it resets, or does it flash amber?
If it flashes amber, it is possible that the configuration was corrupted with the power outage, or, if you re-set it up, didn't write to the AX properly.
Try resetting and re-configuring this AX again - better if you can do it via ethernet cable rather than wirelessly. Once you have green light again, you can remove the cable and switch back to wireless. Better also if you can do it near the base station - once you're up and running with a green light, you can reposition it to its final destination.

I have a laptop with the same wifi card and have been having similar issues. I just wanted to say that, after trying nearly everything (including booting into an old Debian partition to no avail), I saw this post.
I figured it couldn't hurt, so I shutdown the laptop, unplugged it and pulled the battery. I booted it again, and voilà, magically my wifi card worked again.
There must be some kind of switch that got toggled off, and was reset by clearing power. My laptop has two buttons with airplane labels that have never done anything (they probably would in Windows), but they did nothing for me.
Anyway, thank you person from the past, the solution is here.

  • P1606dn no longer connects to network

Hi there. Our p1606dn has not been responsive lately. It is connected over the network.
When I print the self test/device configuration, it keeps showing 0.0.0.0 as IP address. IP configured by 'manual'. I've tried all sorts of cables. I can connect other printers to the network with the same cable. Our network environment works by DHCP and each device has its propert ip address. How can I change the ip address? When I use the install program to search for the printer by MAC address, it does not detect it. I have done a hard boot. No difference. Any solution? Thanks in advance.
    This question was solved.

Well yes you are not connected to the router with that IP as it is invalid.  Maybe the port in the printer is bad?  Take the printer to another router and check.
