My OS X 10.8.2 screensaver freezes

Hi,
I have noted on several occassions that my screensaver stops moving and becomes a static image, rather defeating its purpose!
If I touch the mouse of keyboard, it is correctly dismissed and I am returned to the OS, and when it comes back it is animated initially, but at some point if often seems to stop.
I am running OS X 10.8.2, on a Mac Mini late 2012, with my external display connected via Thunderbolt port. I have to date been using the screensaver "Arabesque", will be trying another shortly to see if it is specific to that screensaver.
Interestingly, I don't remember seeing this on 10.8.1, but that might be because my display was set to turn off after 10 mins, whereas now it is set for 1 hour.
Any suggestions as to how to resolve this minor annoyance greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
James

I am seeing the same thing. Brand new MBP 15 inch with retina display. I'm using a 4 year old Apple LED screen as my external monitor. Screen Saver is Flurry. Interestingly, the saver only freezes on the external monitor, not on the laptop retina display.

  • Screensaver freezes

I had a screensaver freeze probably associated with 10.4.4 which was causing the Timer of Audio Hijack Pro not to start the recording from sleep at night. When I came to the computer in the morning the screensaver picture was frozen, the computer was running full blast and I had to restart. The frozen screensaver apparently prevented Audio Hijack Pro to start.
When I ran Disk Warrior 3.0.3 it showed that "57 files will be accessed", meaning of which I don't understand. There were no errors before 10.4.4 My Apple Disk Utility showed that my HD was fine. I also used Cocktail 3.7 without any problems.
After replacing ScreenSaver.prefPan from Tiger DVD using Pacifist and after removing all of the Account startup items, the Audio Hijack Pro Timer woke up the computer from sleep as before the 10.4.4 upgrade and the recording proceeded normally. The screensaver now works fine without freezing.
I am only noticing momentary questionmark on the computer startup screen which wasn't there before replacing the folder from the install Tiger DVD with Pacifist. It looks like my computer is for a moment searching for the operating system.
    Any comments and explanations?

  • Screensaver Freezing in 10.5.1

Is anybody else having issues with their screensaver freezing since upgrading to 10.5.1?
Whichever screensaver I use it freezes after 15 seconds or so. The Mac doesn't freeze, just the screensaver, but it doesn't half spoil the new iPhoto Collage screensaver.

I've come across a bug a couple of times now: the Apple screensaver (Solid Colors) isn't waking up properly everytime. The System does work, but the screen itself will not be refreshed until you actually start moving things around in the Finder. For example, if it's happening then I press the spacebar to select some item on the Desktop, then I'll press Command-O to open up a window. Then I start dragging around that window to make the whole desktop visible again..
Take a look at the screenshot below to find out what I mean:
Did anyone else come across this bug yet?

  • Installed Lion, change wallpaper, "desktop & screensaver" freeze, force quit, then "system preferences" freeze and need force quit every time

After Lion install, tried to change wallpaper in "system preferences"->"desktop & screensaver" appeared but immediatly freeze, so force quit.
Then System preference pane as it immediatly freezes if I try to open it.  Have to "force quit" each time.
Found many people have the exact issue and highly likely it's the bug of lion.
    Anybody found a solution?  Thx.

It has to do with a problem accessing the images on the home>images folder. To solve it, just move its content (iphoto library included) to another place. Then, restart System Preferences. Moving your iPhoto library to another location seems to fix the problem. I am sure Apple will issue an update to correct this problem. But, for now this seems to work for me.

  • Screensaver Freezes iMac

Quite often lately, when I walk over and wiggle the mouse, the computer freezes instead of waking from the screensaver. Usually, this lockup happens when I've been away for quite some time; most noticeably when the computer has gone into screensaver mode first and then (later) into display sleep as well. The problem doesn't always happen when waking from sleep, though. Sometimes the screensaver is up and moving very fluidly, but then when I touch the mouse, it freezes. The only way to rectify this problem is to reboot, which makes me wary of using the screensaver at all, and means I cannot do ANY important work on this machine because if I get a phone call, I could potentially lose everything. I really don't want to disable the screensaver given that this iMac was repaired last year when Apple determined the screen to be defective.
I don't have the hard drive set to sleep because my MacBook and AppleTV share the iTunes files. When the problem happened today, iTunes and Safari were running the background, but no windows were actually open; they had been closed four hours earlier, but not exited. When I came back everything locked.

    Hi Freakydisco
Complex ScreenSaver's use tons of resources especially if they run for a long period of time, how much Ram do you have in the iMac?
I would disable the ScreenSaver, set Computer Sleep to never and set the Display to Sleep after 5 or 10 minutes.. you might try a simpler ScreenSaver for a shorter period of time to see if that helps.

  • Screensaver freezes my mac!

i've have my mac for a few years now and suddenly this problem has come up; my screensaver will begin to run then when i move the mouse to exit the screensaver the entire system freezes. i wait a few minutes then the screen goes black. i've tried to force quit, but nothing responds so i have to turn the computer off.
Any idea what might cause this
I'm running mac os x 10.5.3 with 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo and 2 gb of ram
the screensaver is 'arabesque' which came with the mac

    Might be corrupted preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file to the Trash.
Retart your Mac thn try System Preferrences > Screen Saver

  • Screensaver freezes once per day?

I installed Leopard recently on my intel iMac. I am experiencing a weird bug. My screensaver keeps freezing. I have to power down the iMac each time this happens.
    Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

My wife's MacBook has been having a similar issue. I suspect the screensaver is freezing the machine (because the screen is either totally black or the screensaver is on (frozen of course)).
I've been testing the hardware to see if that's causing it but we just disabled the screensaver to see if that stops the freezing. My main problem is that I can't find any crash logs that indicate what is causing Mac OS to lock up.
Are you fairly certain the screensaver is causing the freezes? What screensaver are you using?

  • Screensaver freeze

When I leave my computer on for an extended period of time, it often freezes during screensaver routine. Most frequently when I get up in the AM after leaving on overnight - any suggestions?

  • Screensaver freezes my imac

I have a Mac OS X version 10.4.11 and every time my screensaver activates and I move my mouse to deactivate it, my computer freezes and I have to reboot. Any solutions to this problem, or why this is happening? Thanks!

    ScreenSavers use lots or resources.
One reason could be that your earlier iMac has less than 1GB of RAM or that your Hard Drive is getting full. The second less pleasant reason is that your Hard Drive is starting to show signs of age.
Disable the ScreenSaver and check to see how much free space is left on your hard Drive? If you have less than 15% then you really need to free up some space on it. Some other options include upgrading the RAM, replacing the Hard Drive or the Computer.

I have been experiencing the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro 17 inch (8GB RAM) for months. This problem is REALLY annoying as I leave all my applications and files open all the time and have to crash-reboot my MBP and re-open everything after the screensaver crashes the comptuer. Apple , please FIX this problem ASAP.
I need a password protected screensaver! Disabling my screen saver is not an option.

  • Screensaver freezes on MacBook Pro running Latest Lion

A key stroke or mouse click won't remove the screensaver. However dragging the mouse across the screen reveals the login screen behind. Any fixes?

    Hi Colin ...
MIght be a corrupted .plist file  (preferences)
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.screensaver.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.

  • Screensaver freezing when iTunes is playing

Dear list members, on my iMac 27" Late 2009 running OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3, whenever iTunes is playing a song or online radio and the screensaver gets automatically activated (after 5 min), the computer crashes. The system either does not show the logon window to exit the screensaver or it just crashes with a blank screen. When iTunes is on, but not playing anything, those crashes do not happen. It's very annoying, as sometimes I leave my computer alone to do something else and then I cannot resume my work without having to force restart the machine. Could you please help me?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Desktop screensaver freezes

I hope that is not your
    solution.
    Shut down and reboot?
Its ok , Thanks for trying .
I found the solution on another website.
The answer is going to FInder

  • Screensaver freezes computer

After I upgraded to OS X 10.9 Maverick, the screensaver locks up my mac mini.  Has anyone had this problem? And does anyone know a work around for it.  The screen is black.  I can see only the mouse arrow. I can hear the computer when the keys are pressed.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Screen Saver Keeps Freezing

    Hello Somebody,
Posted question previously but no reply. Will try again here.
Having problems with my screensaver--freezing. Have tried keyboard commands, etc. etc. Unplug--replug peripherals.  Have to tab power button to restart.
In addition, (hopefully I won't have to create a brand new question, if so please let me know) but here goes: would like to know why my computer does not restart automatically even though I've always had within Energy Saver Pane--little checkbox checked to have computer restart automatically if freezes. I'll wait several minutes but it never does it for me.
    Help would be wholeheartedly appreciated.
