My  OSX is makin swiss cheese of my HD and  it just killed Disk Warrior

PowerG3 blue and grey- It started right after auto update added (MSE, JRT, OSX1.*)an update of something claiming it would make things smoother. Im at X1.5 trying to get to Tiger X4.* I don't know what exactly is happening but the computer seems only quasi-stable. I just went through all that in the 9 to 9.22 trek where the computer actually crashed, shut down, not just froze (beautiful and terifying kept expecting Bicyl. Blt. for Two). Finally got it stable in 9.22 but then proceded to X. I can't get (hardly) any applications to run in X (they blink? with no message), don't even worry about classic yet (it doesn' run). MSExplorer seems to be the only thing that works but it crashes "unexpectedly" and has difficulty resolving web page content. I feel something (or absolutely nothing) must be done soon to prevent permanent brain damage. When I boot in 9.22 applications run but all are affected. "invalid instructions", "bus error" and "unexpectations" increasingly abound. Now, I can't boot Disk Warrior. G3 sees the CD system but never activates the application. Startup gets kicked back to the startup disk which freezes before it gets far. I can boot again in 9.22 or X and disk first aid sees and repairs the same (?) "mount" error. But its still shakin like a leaf.
Seems there should be a simple explanation why the applications in the install package don't work with the OS. Something easy I can start with? And poor DW, oh the humanity. I tried this 5 years ago and just ran back to 9. An ever diminishing option.
Me- 1st time poster but the discussions have saved me numerous times- Disk Warrior slew my invalid sib link only because I read it here. AppleII(16K) 1979, seven models since. Im not a moron and I know Mac but I'm stumped. Tried some stabs in the dark but if I waste too much more time Im gonna lose the patient.
Any old timer want to explain peek-poke to the kids? they think us mad but at 16k we pretty much looked at every bit one at a time.
PowerG3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   blue and grey 9 to 10.4
PowerG3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   blue and grey

Hi, thanks for your time.
Its teal (blue) and translucent grey (white?). Its a tower with no DVD or floppy. I believe its the "blue and white" model. 384MB RAM (100 addeed) 9.5GB HD, Scsi 2960 added. Also have sony DVD-R/W, que? CD-R/W, APS optical drive, cable modem, epson printer, Canon digital camera currently connected.
Transferred whole 9.22 system from G3 about 3 years ago. Lost Open transfer along the way. Tried to reinstall OT but couldn't find right combo (now ive got pieces of 8, 9, and X). Succeeded in giving G3 a lobotomy- the little start up Mac icon just smiled and smiled- but that was it. To get it back I reverted to 9.0. With a little fiddling it settled down at about 9.15. Decided to go OSX. Bought Tiger 10.4.6 DVD. Can't load it because sony DVD is unsupported by Mac. I am currently trading it (and $15 more dollars) for CD package by mail to Apple. Installed OS 9.1.1, followed by 9.2.1, upgrade to 9.2.2. including all firmware updates as approved by upgrade software (frequently tells me I am up to date) At this point the computer is completely unstable and I have to rotate start up discs to complete software install. (startup disc is partially responsible variously not recognizing system discs). Very soon after reaching 9.2.2 the dreaded "invalid sibling link" struck-unfixable by Disk first aid and not described on Apple pages at all. The most amazing show ever seen from a Mac. Icons, programs, desktop all in flux and blinking ("finder reports being unable to find finder". Had to use the computer a little to get help even though damge was occuring limped through with combined treatments of Norton Dr, and First aid, . DIscussions to the rescue- they know it and they can fix it. Disk Warrior (last in stock copy) 1.4.7. 30 min later computer fine 9.2.2 stable. I happily go on for about 2 weeks ignoring Tiger.
I move my other G3 from my office find my original X1.1 CD. The DVD and the camera need X to work well they say (they lied they actually need X.3 or better). I procede with install of 1.1. The memories of frustration flood back. Can't navigate and can't get information. New OSX applications mostly just blink the icon upon clicking. Optical drive not recognized, and all my software takes a classic environment which takes a long time to load and never actually works. Updater wants new software but doesnt think I have the right password. Functioning OSX software not working well. Example- MSexplorer updates to 5.1 but needs new QT plug in. Input boxes on web pages are horribly mutated and graphics are chaotic. Its hard to login with ID and Password when there is only one input box and it corresponds to something different (can't Yahoo with MSE). Can't load QT because there is just a big empty space where it says "load 7.1 here". I set startup disk to 9.2.2 and live in ignorance for another 2 weeks.
I need to download from the camera. I need X. this Updater takes my password and makes three updates-including combo 1.1 to 1.5. I use MSE for a short time before it "quits unexpectedly". I try again (and again, 2X) but as expected it "quits unexpectedly" Disgusted I switch back to 9.2.2. TOO LATE. invalid instruction, bus error, unexpected quit, unmapped memory exception with every application. Disk first aid reports a problem and fixes. But the errors continue and Disk first aid reports the same problem and fixes. (repeat 1X more). I put in DiskWarrior and restart. I see the CD icon. It;s taking its usual long time. But then it suddenly restarts in 9.2.2 freezing about half way. Disk Warrior was never activated I believe because the system on the disk (X.4.8) no longer works with the current arrangement. Although startup disk (9 and X) does, system profiler(9) does not see 10.4.8 on the DW CD . It did just a few days ago. I try various combos of 9.2.2, DW, and OSX. DW won't launch, 9.2.2, OSX are still unstable.
I can't believe I made it to Discussions. Reading my post I get an idea and reinstall update combo 1.1 to 1.5. Better? a little, but still I come to you now from 9.2.2 on Netscape and still can't load DW. I'm probably overwriting the hard drive driver right now.
As for Tiger I tried a few times to trick startup into using the DVD but it refused. Someone suggested firmware, but the response is that I'm updated. Maybe there is more I'm missing.
Don't forget the bonus question.
Thanks again hope to hear more.

Could a GeneralPath model a 2-d cross-section of swiss cheese or a doughnut?
Do all the points of a GeneralPath need to be contiguous?
According Ernimril in [this post|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=5&threadID=612402] , a GeneralPath can have a hole in the middle, as long as the winding rule is set to WIND_EVEN_ODD. This seems to be confirmed by [the explanation of WIND_EVEN_ODD on the documentation for GNU Classpath|http://developer.classpath.org/doc/java/awt/geom/GeneralPath.html] , and [this nice forum post explaining the difference between the two winding rules|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=54&threadID=781529] . However none of the examples given point to a shape that consecutive but noncontiguous points.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

It is likely that you downloaded AirPort Utility 5.6.1.  If you checked the requirements, this only runs on Leopard or Snow Leopard Macs.
You have Lion, so you need AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

  • Disk Warrior 3.0.3 on OSX 10.6.8?

I'm having major problems with my iMac (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo/2 GB 66 MHz DDR2 SDRAM/running OSX version 10.6.8). Very, very slow to login, hangs up during normal use, slows to a crawl, etc. I did some searching on this forum and have tried some suggestions offerred to people with similar problems, such as running Disk Utility. When I ran it off the hard drive it went through the process with no real error messages (found a few "damaged files" and put them in folder named the same). Then I tried running it off my Snow Leopard install disk and got the message:
Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD" Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Next on my list, before going so far as reformatting/restoring (I use Time Machine to back up my system onto a 500 GB external hard drive) I want to run Disk Warrior. Here at the office we have a very old version (3.0.3). Will it work with Snow Leopard? I popped the disk into a Mac running Lion and it had the slash through the icon, indicating that it isn't compatible. However, I popped it into my work iMac, which is running the same OS as my problem iMac at home, and it looks as though it may work.
Obviously the most recent version would be ideal but will this one at least run for me? If it will I think I'll give it a shot. If it doesn't work I'll look into getting an upgrade. Anyone know?
One other thing...never could locate the S.M.A.R.T. info in my Disk Utility. Saw that mentioned several times in posts but it doesn't appear on my version. I did download an app called SMARTReporter and ran that. All indications were that my hard drive is OK.

I'm unclear what you did after re-reading your original post. Did you do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    HI,
In Message Menu > Preference > Accounts you should at least have the iMessage Account (Which is Enabled) and th Bonjour one that most likely is not.
After that if you had iChat type AIM valid Screen Names or Jabber IDs in an earlier OS then the System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars should list them and have them set to be used with Messages.
There is a vague chance that you have not set these up yet (you can do it in Messages or Mail, Contacts and Calendars)
Once you have a t least one other "Account" other than th iMessage one in Messages then the Buddy List option will appear next to CMD and 1 in the Window menu list.
    NEXT
If you go to the General Section of the Messages Preferences you can unlink several Buddy lists if you have them (By default they are shown as one gathered Buddy list)
I Have several Accounts logged in (AIM valid and Jabber ones)

And I separate them in to individual lists which then gives me this in the Window Menu

I have a white Macbook 2009 on OSX Lion. It came with the OSX Snow Leopard CD, I erased the HDD and am trying to install the OSX from disc but am getting "cannot install OSX from disc" message. What can I do?
I got the macbook from a friend a few years ago and it already had OSX Lion installed. Whenever it boots from the Snow Leopard disc it says it cannot install from disc. Is there anythingI can do or should I take it to an Apple store to get them to boot OSX Lion for me?

Insert your Snow Leopard disc and restart, press and hold the C key as soon as you hearthe startup chime, hold C until you see the Apple Logo. When your computer starts up you'll be at the first install screen, choose your language and click the arrow to go to the next screen. This screen has a menu bar, from the Utilities menu select Disk Utility, select your hard drive, this is the one with the manufacturers name or numbers, click the partition tab and then delete any existing partitions by selecting them and clicking the minus. In the drop down box select one partition and click apply. Name your hard drive and click erase. When it's done quit DU and go back to the installer, install Snow Leopard. When the installer is done and the computer is back up and running run Software Update to get to 10.6.8

I have OSX 10.9.4 , Safari 7.0.5, and the latest version of Adobe flash player.  I have tried all the uninstall and install fixes and I still get flash player failure.  Any other fixes?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Flash won't work very well, if at all, but it shouldn't crash. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

I recommend to check www.icloud.com, are your contacts shown there?
If not -> Something might be not set up correctly on you iOS devices.
Also.. Simple but maybe occuring: Contacts -> Preferences -> Accounts -> iCloud is enabled? (Should be by default if you have iCloud setup via the system preferences, but you never know..)
