My "other" file is stealing my storage space and my local apple store has no idea how to find out what is in it let alone how to clear it so I can upgrade to iOS 7. He thinks my iPad is not really deleting things but storing it here.

My "other" file is stealing my storage space and my local apple store is aware of the problem but has no idea how to view it's content or how to empty it. He thinks my deleted files are going here instead of being deleted. Raw beginner here! Need help.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • How to find out what process touched a file

I am currently running Leopard 10.5.7 on a MacBook. Some of my system files' permissions keep getting screwed up. It happens randomly, and when it does I have to repair permission and reboot the computer to fix it. I am trying to isolate the problem. Is there a way to find out what processes or applications touched a certain file? thanks.

    Tony:
Did you try repairing your keychain?
Look in your 'Utilities' folder for the 'Keychain Access' application.
Run it and use the 'Keychain Access/Keychain First Aid' menu...follow the prompts. After repairs, restart and see if the situation improves.
If you are determining permission repair status on a repeated basis by simply doing a repair and reacting to the immediate report there, you may be chasing ghosts.
If you are encountering legitimate issues when running various apps, you may need to check the basics. If there are other users on the machine or you have moved standard applications to custom locations you may have to simplify your overall machine's configuration and go from there.
    Good luck in any case.

  • I've lost an important email correspondence from 2012. I've heard this could be due to getting new Mac with Mavericks. can any one tell me (how to find out) if this is related? Also, how to retrieve the lost emails in my Gmail? Thanks

    Hello!
I've just been told that "a lot of people have reported the total loss of their e-mail related to the Mavericks (10.9) update.  It appears the update corrupts the email files on your computer and when the Apple e-mail client sees everything is "gone" it wipes the server too (your GMail account)."
I need to recover/retrieve a lost email sent from my GMail account back in sep/oct 2012. can any one help?
I have searched my account the relevant correspondence is gone. I should not have deleted it myself. I've only started using "Mail" for my GMail account last September, so the servers could not have mixed up the Gmail archives, I think. Either way, I'm not smart enough yet to know how to retrieve this correspondence. The lost email is rather important, why I need to investigate all possible solutions.
My gmail settings i.e. POP/IMAP and Filters are as they should, as far as I believe, but yet, I cannot tell how my settings were in 2012, tho I think I've never changed anything personally. In Sep 2012, arounf the time the, now lost, corresponcence took place, I switched to using Chrome, where before I was using Safari or Firefox. I now use a new mac book with Mavericks and browse in Chrome, most of the time.
Would anyone be able to guide me through some steps, or have any leads on this?
    Many thanks in advance!
    LK

Unless you've done anything to change it, Google keeps every email that ever passes through their server in your All Mail folder/mailbox/label. Even if you delete stuff, they hold onto it, there. You have to go out of your way to actually delete anything permanently.

  • How to Find Out What is Eating up my HD space

Help! I have a MacBook that is just a little over a year old and it is almost at capacity. When I bought the thing I wasn't doing much with photo editing and now I am doing a lot. My 80G HD is full and I can't figure out what is eating up my space. Is there an easy way to see what is hogging all of the space on my HD? I have 14G in music, another 12-13 in photos- those I can identify. I just can't tell what else is eating up my space. I need to purge stuff but am just not sure where to start. I have an EHD that I can move stuff to but I want to get rid of whatever I don't need.
Is there a way to create a list in order by file size so I can see where all my space is going?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Hi JennKRE,
you can use application called what size to see what inside your macbook:
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/
you can use monolingual to get rid language you don't use:
    http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/
use appdelete to delete application you no longer use:
    http://reggie.ashworth.googlepages.com/appdelete
Use Onyx to delete cache files, repair permission and optimize your HD:

  • How to find out what files a package has installed?

Sometime you installed a package, but you don't know the name of the command to run and you don't know the name and location of the configuration files. There are conventions but is there a way to show those information explicitly?

    aberkoke wrote:
    You can try
    $locate
    for example. you write
    $locate firefox
and you will see all files about firefox.
That's a partial solution. Suppose I installed a package called gtk-vim, but the binary is gvim and I didn't know that. If I use
    locate gtk-vim
    it will not find "gvim".
Besides, different packages may install files with names identical or partially identical. What I want to find out is what files a specific package installed or removed, or changed, just like the deb package manager in ubuntu.

  • How to find out what program is using a file I am trying to delete?

I know I could probably just reboot and then empty my trash without getting this error- but this is a good chance to learn. So, I have a video file I converted with Handbrake. I deleted the file- but it won't let me delete it- saying it is in use (this is even after closing Handbrake). I have closed everything but it still gives me this error. Is there a way to see what program is grabbing it- a terminal command maybe?
    thx

Open terminal, copy and paste the following
    lsof
    note- trailing blank space,
drag and drop your file from trash or from desktop to the open terminal window, and return.
    example +lsof /pathtofile+

  • How to find out what camera files are supported in CS4

    Hi guys,
I've searched support and this forum and have not been able to find an answer. We are going to be purchasing a new camera in the not too distant future and need to know if CS4 will support the one we eventually purchase or if we will have to upgrade. Is there anywhere on the Adobe site that has a list of supported files for Camera Raw in CS4?
    Thanks for any help, Linda

The general answer to your question (for the benefit of future readers) is this:
    1.  Browse to the Photoshop and Camera Raw updates page:
         Windows:
         http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
         Mac:
         http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Macintosh
    2.  Note the major heading for the version of Photoshop you have or are interested in (Version CS5, Version CS4, etc.)
    3.  Note what version of Camera Raw is near the top of that section (i.e., the most recent update for that version of Photoshop).
    4.  Follow the Camera Raw x.x Update link.
    5.  In the Camera Raw update page, follow the Camera Raw x.x ReadMe link.
    6.  Find the list of supported cameras and raw formats and see if the camera you have or are interested in is listed.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to find out the amount of ram a computer can hold

I want to know how to find out what is the max amount of ram my computer can actually take advantage of, rather than tell you my model and you tell me what is the max because I know it varies according to the model of the Computer
But if you'd like to help the other way, here is my model: Macbook(13-inch, Mid 2010 [unibody]) basically the latest version of the white macbook.

    Pointdexter11 wrote:
simple version: what algorithms do they use to figure out the max is 8GB
That is not a simple question.  I don't think anyone here knows the exact testing process that Apple uses to determine what the max ram will be at the time of release.  This is done during the development process.

  • Can a local Apple store replace the hard drive in a current iMac

Can a local Apple store replace the hard drive in a current iMac or do they have to send it out to a service center for repair? I was told that the new iMacs are too difficult to service now that they are glued together and a local Apple store cannot do the repair themselves. Is this true?

i know the SSD is serviceable like all the apple products, and isn't that difficult to replace. definitely reach out to the store and find out. you should be able to call ahead and get some answers from the Genius Bar.
