My 'other' storage is making my ipod over capacity

My 'other' storage is making my ipod over capacity and I now am unable to sync or even restore my ipod. VERY FRUSTRATED PLEASE HELP!

If the "other" is larger than about 1 1/2 GB that large usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • ITunes saying iPod over capacity, iPod says different

Yesterday I accidentally deleted all of my podcasts.  I spent a considerable amount of time rebuilding everything, and as the delete happened, it deleted all of them off of my iPod Classic as well.
After rebuilding all of the stuff in iTunes, I went back to sync and it keeps saying the iPod is full.  Well, there are no podcasts in there which the thing was full of them before, and the iPod itself says there is 12GB of free space.  iTunes just keeps saying it is over capacity and the number keeps climbing.
I have reset the iPod (confirm button + menu) and rebooted the iMac, so memories should be cleared.  I'm stumped.
iPod Classic is version 5.5, iMac is latest Sandy Bridge version, iTunes 10.4.1.

    Which iPod is this?
You may want to format the iPod.

  • As I import new cds, I have been making a playlist of the new album.  Would this result in reduced storage space on my ipod?

I have a 120 gig Ipod classic, and have frquently made a playlist of each new album after imporitng the album.  Is this resulting in using double the storage space on my ipod?
    thanks!

    No, it's simply a list.
However, I have to ask, why are you making a Playlist of each new album? To find any album on an iPod Classic, simply use the Album menu.

  • I put iPod on "songs, shuffle" but the shuffle isn't random!  Same artist repeats often, same songs repeat before other songs are played.  With over 2000 songs on the iPod, I shouldn't be getting repeats very often.  Anybody else?

Shuffle is not perfect. What you are experiencing is normal.

  • Over 30gb of "Other" Storage

My ipad 2 has over 30gb of used other space on it.
I tried clearing my music off the ipad and then it turned into "other". There is now no music on the ipad and the space is used.
How can I get rid of it?

  • Solution: Syncing with my iTunes library an endless headache: Songs don't transfer, or songs transfer and show up as "other," or I get double copies, or "Over Capacity," or stuck on "waiting for changes to be applied."

iPod Touch 5g, 64GB, iOS 7.1. After my iPod data began showing up "Other," after an abrupt disconnection from iTunes during a sync I've spent the last week trying to fix it only to be thwarted at every attempt.  I've tried resetting and restoring 6 or 7 times now, and all goes well until it gets to copying my library of music over.  What I finally figured out is that 8,000+ songs is too many for iTunes to process all at once for some reason.
After several nights of leaving it connected all night I would find that the songs had physically copied and were occupying the ~45 gb of space on my iPod's storage, but were not showing up on my local library, instead listed as "Other" in iTunes and otherwise unusuable, or they would show up, but I'd have ~45 gigs of "Other," 45 gigs of "Audio," and would be "Over Capacity," by 30 gigs or so.  OR it would be "Waiting for Changes to be Applied," for 12+ hours.
My work around:  In iTunes, under the "Music" / "Sync Music" tab, instead of syncing "Entire Music Library," select "Selected Playlists, Artists, Albums, and Genres."  You will have to indivually select the playlists, artists, albums, or genres and kept each bulk tansfer to <2000 songs at a time.  The easiest way for me to do this was by selecting one genre at a time and copying it over.  I had already taken the time to organize my library into 10 genres, you probably have more than 10.  This is irritating and time consuming, but it's better than resetting my iPod over and over and over again to no avail.
Waiting for Changes? What iTunes is actually doing when it says it is "Waiting for Changes," or "Waiting for Items to Copy."  iTunes for whatever reason does not reveal the relevent data being processed during a sync (didn't it used to?), but there are a couple ways you can decipher what it is actually up to.  The first option is on the iPod; under Settings>General>iTunes Wi-Fi Sync it will tell you what it is up to during syncing.  The other way on the iPod; under Music>Songs, scroll all the way to the bottom to see where it is at in the process.  What iTunes, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, and the bottom of the Songs library report are not always in agreement, but seeing all three will give you a better approximation of where you are in the syncing process and whether or not it is hanging.
This for me was successful as a workaround, but this is not a solution.  Apple needs to fix this crap.  Maybe they just want to make it so difficult to have a physical library of music on the local storage of the iPod that we will just give up and sign up for their Match service.

ALSO, on the iPod under Settings>General>iTunes Sync, you may need to back out of the "iTunes Wi-fi Sync," and reopen it to get it to update.
    (I use iTunes 11.1.5.5)

  • I have a 16gb ipod touch 4th generation, 733 songs and 5 apps, yet it says it is over capacity and will not sync. however i know people with 8gb ipods and 1000s of songs? help please!

just says my ipod is over capacity when it's a 16gb ipod so it obviously isn't, can someone help!

How many songs depends upon the format of the some. Some are not compressed at al and they take up a lot of storage.
In the Summary pane for the iPod in iTunes you can compress songs that are synced to the iPod. Check the box that says Convert higher bitrate songs to XX kpps ACC. An XX or 128 is a good compromise of quality and compression.
    Also,
Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It

  • Why do i have a lot of "other" storage?

I just restored my iPod touch 5. It was having problems syncing doubles of all my music. I restored my iPod and re synced all my music. All my music synced properly but now I have over 11 GB of "other" storage. How do i get rid of the other storage. I feel like it might be backed up data.

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"

  • Why does other storage build up so fast?

I just did a complete restore and back up yesterday, 'cuz I had no storage space remaining.  I have no movies, no music, barely any photos or apps installed.  After the restore I freed up almost 9 GB out of 12 GB of storage space.  The only thing that I have used the iPad for since is to watch YouTube and surf with Safari.  So, why have I accumulated over half a GB of other storage already?
    THanks!

    Hi Bubba314,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
You are able to view how much each app is taking up storage space, which can help you determine what is taking up space on your iPad.  Take a look at the information in the article below for more information.

  • Yellow 'Other Storage' Taking up space and won't go away

My son seems to be doing something that makes his iPad and iPhone fill up with 'Other' storage.
over 3/4 the space is now 'other'.
Looking at the 'Usage' section, there are none of the usual suspects using space (Mail, iMessage, Documents).   In fact, Video and others all say they are zero.  If you manually add up the apps that it lists, I'm using 6.53GB total, yet on a 32GB iPad I only have 9GB free.
I'm tired of playing the restore game now that iOS 7 makes you turn off find my ipad and all that crap every time you try to restore it.   Plus it doesn't fix it, it just deletes whatever that stuff is and whatever is happening is making it come right back after a bit.
The other thing is he isn't a heavy user, he mostly watches iTunes library of TV shows.   It's like the Video app is caching something, or putting it somewhere but then saying 'I don't have it' and filling up the iPad.
Any ideas?  this is getting really old.   We've got 5 iPads in the house and his is the only one doing this, but he's the only one who constantly watches purchased videos on it.
"restore it" isn't an idea, because it comes right back.   I'm tired of that game.

    It normally builds up slowly.
    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • My ipod touch 4g is over capacity after doing a restore as I was advised to do by Apple themselves, what can I do?

My Ipod touch 4g had a high amount of "other" data (over 5gb) I was advised by apple themselves to do a restore and they even talked me through it sayong this would resolve my issue. Now I have even more "other" data and can't sync even one app back to my ipod as it says I am over capacity, can not back up to icloud either even though I have 4.99gb of free storage remainging there. Any ideas as to why the restore didn't clear this data and not only that why did I end up with more than I had in the first place? I can't find any resolutions to this problem anywhere online. Many thanks

Hi thanks for your response. I found a solution by deleting all imessage conversations I managed to free up 2.7 gb of "other" data, I told a friend to try the same thing as he also had a similar issue and he also gained over a gig back.

  • "Other" Storage Amount is acting odd...please help!!

My iPad has been perfectly fine for over a year. Last night when I went to add some more music, my iPad would simply not sync. I then noticed in iTunes that it said my entire iPad storage was made up of "other". I restored my iPad, used my backup from iCloud, and the same thing happened. So I thought no problem, I'll just restore again and set it up as a new iPad (and lose all of my saved data). Here's the problem now...
When my iPad was completely empty, I had .5 GB of "other", which was fine. Something very weird is happening now though. I'm manually adding apps one at a time. When I add an app, the app storage rises appropriately, BUT just about every time I add an app, it tacks on .05 GB or so of "other" storage space. Even weirder is this...when I remove/uncheck an app that added to the "other" storage, it does NOT remove the "other" storage that it added on. For example, my "other" is at .65 GB. I check the box to add an app, the app storage goes up appropriately, and the "other" storage adds on another .05, making a total of .7 GB of "other". I will UNCHECK the same app, and my "other" goes down to .68 GB......
Basically, every time I add/check the box for an app, it's adding some "other" storage that never removes itself from my iPad storage.
What the heck is going on here? I honestly feel like I have a defective iPad or something...

First read these two excerpts from the Pondini web site:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/LionStorage.html
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
Next download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It will show all of your files and the respective sizes.  Delete or transfer to an external HDD what you do not need or want.
DO NOT employ any so called 'cleaning' application.  They will not solve your problem and will simply create more issues.  You the user are the best cleaning device.
    Ciao.

Anybody got a word of advise? I've tried resetting the iPod but get the message that it's not possible cause i'm not connected to internet. I am though. Tried managing music manually. I've tried all the usual stuff.

Go to Settings > General > Usage and see how much is shown available and how much is in "Other".
