Hello,
Seems you already tried and did the necessary troubleshooting. This means the drive is dead. If the drive is till under warranty then you can get it replaced.
How to get an RMA, (Return Merchandise Authorization) or replace a defective product under warranty

Le problème était le fichier système formaté sous mac. *Les partitions étaient en mac os x étendu.* Windows ne pouvait lire ce système de fichiers.
Alors on essayé différentes file system. *Il faillait choisir MS-DOS (FAT32) pour mac et Windows.*
Après ce formatage nous avons essayé sur un machine Windows vista ou 7. Maintenant ça marche.
    Merci de ton aide.

  • My Passport Essential constant connect disconnect on some windows 8.1 machines

Hi All, I have a 500 GB My Passport Essential, it works fine on my win 7 laptop, and my win 8.1 laptop, but on my win 8.1 pc that I recently built it constantly connect and disconnects. I have tried disabling the hard drive sleep mode settings in power settings, tried using WD Drive Utilities on Win 7 but it wouldnt recognise the drive. Turning off the sleep mode settings did make it show up for a very short while, but after that it was back to connecting and disconnecting. The hdd light turns on, I can hear the drive spinning, and I can hear the connect/disconnect sounds from windows. Any ideas?

    Hi, welcome to the community.
It seems might be a power issue or the USB port in the board. Have you tried using another port and another cable? Also making sure in the power settings that the USB are not set to be turned off.

  • WD My Passport Essential External HD

I just purchased the Western Digital My Passport Essential HD and plugged it in and it will not mount. Disk Utility doesn't recognize it either. I'm running 10.4.11. According to the Western Digital website this HD is compatible with Mac so I have no idea why it isn't mounting or being recognized with Disk Utility. Please help. Thank you.

How is it plugged in (firewire or USB)? Not that it really should matter.
I'd contact WD first about this since a brand new drive should at least be recognized. Most new drives come formatted for PCs but a Mac should at least see it.

  • WD My Passport Essential not recognized anymore

Hi, I have a WD My Passport Essential 3.0 Gen2 1TB. After 2 years of using it without any trouble, it stopped working. The blue light is on, it appears in Device Manager as USB connected, but I cannot access it - it says I need to format it, then it says "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". I changed the drive letter - no results.Changed the USB cable - no results.Tried connecting it to another computer - no results.I tried using WD Drive Utilities, but the tests failed (quick at 90%, complete right away). I have some pictures and videos on that drive, so I don't want to format it. Is there any way I can access or recover them? Thanx in advance.

    Hello,
You can try to recover the files using a data recovery software. If this does not work then you can try a data recovery company.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • Formatting WD My Passport Essential SE 1 TB

I was doing research on portable drives. I found a good deal on a Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB.
I was wondering about a few things for those who had this drive.
    1. Obvious question...are you generally happy with it? Any quirks?
    2. How sturdy or safe is it carrying this drive in a backpack? I mean if I was running to catch a train, do I have to worry about the heads scratching the platters? How much jarring can a portable drive take?
    3. If you go to the Apple store and read the reviews on this drive. About the six review from the top entitled "Make Sure You Re-Partition to GUID!!!" I am not very technically savvy. Does it makes sense to reformat according to this user's experience? And if so, will it be pretty obvious when I use the Apple Disk Utility to format the drive using the GUID partition scheme?
The drive will be used to transfer files between a Power Mac and an Intel Mac.

Since I do not own this particular drive, I'll try to answer your third question based on your last sentence:
If your PPC is running anything prior to 10.4.6, you should partition it to APM (Apple Partition Map) so both machines can access the data. If it runs 10.4.6 and beyond, GUID is fine.
Upon opening DIsk Utility, choose the recently acquired HD on the list to the left. Click the Partition tab and choose (I'm assuming) 1 partition from the drop down menu. Near the bottom, lies the Options button - this is the place where you'll choose your partition scheme.
    Hope this helps. Regards,
    Vitu

  • WD passport Essential

i have a WD external drive (My Passport Essential) which i used previously to back up my files. However a friend of mine recommended me to use CCC and i find it easier and less complication.
i am trying to remove the WD Smartware from appearing on my desktop. Tried uninstalling the smartware but eveytime i connect it to my MacBook, i could still see it there.
    Any suggestions?

Look in your Accounts Login Items and see if there's any WD software being launched when you log in.
If there's nothing there stuff may be in the following locations:
~/Library/LaunchAgents (~ is your home directory)
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/StartupItems
Incidentially CCC (or Super Duper) are good apps for doing backups.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro 13" & WD My Book Essential 2TB USB 3.0.

    Hi
I have a Macbook pro 13" that I bought in Late 2011. I just bought a WD My Book Essential 2 TB USB 3.0 External Hard drive, but its not unmounting/reformatting? Have I made a huge mistake in buying the hard drive??!
    Thanks

Does this model externally enclosed USB 3.0 HDD require a power adapter, or does it run using port power from the computer?
For whatever reason, it would appear that this drive incorrectly 'unmounts' when the computer goes to sleep; so perhaps the lack of port power or connection to a live port, implies the same thing as an unplugged memory media.
Do you have a powered USB hub? Is the 'WD My Book' self-powered with its own mains power adapter?
I'd see about getting a FireWire or Thunderbolt external drive for a backup, with power adapter, and check into detail concerning brand and controller chipset in such a device. There are some fairly nice ones I've seen at OWC otherworldcomputing online, they have what appears to be good Mac compatible hardware; according to other user experiences. The OWC storage options have a variety of port compatibility.
    {Previous experience with WD in Macintosh, also Kingston RAM in Macintosh, keep me clear of them. No matter of how great others may find them now. I've fixed too many issues based on low-end parts.}
To get a better configuration of hard disk drive, enclosure, & connection-type is recommended. I've used self-powered FireWire400/800 externally enclosed HDDs with oxford-type chipsets as a preference. Now there are other options, though and a few faster ones entice to match up with newer expectation.
Not sure if this helps much...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Connecting WD essential to usb port.

I have connected a WD Essential HDD to the WRT160NL storage link port. When go to network and try to open theWRT160NL icon I receive an error message "network path not found" I can access the router through the web address however I cannot see the HDD on the USB port. I am somewhat of a novice so please be bsaic in your response.
    Thanks

Click on Start -Go to Start>>Run/Start search and type "\\192.168.1.1" (Without quotes) and hit enter, and it should prompt you for the Username and Password, in the Username and Password use "admin" all in lower case and click Ok...Now you should be able to see your USB Drive... You need to right click on it and select "Map Network Drive" and check the box Enable and below click on Finish... This will Map the USB Drive on your computer... Once done you will be able to Send and Receive the data from your Computer to the USB Drive...

  • Is it possible to use my "My Passport Essential SE" external hard drive on my PC, and my MacBookPro? Is it possible to reserve like 300gb for my PC, and 700GB for my MBP? please advise

I have a 1TB external hard drive, and I just thought of the idea. If it would be possible to seperate space's with in the external HD. Like can I save 300gb off my PC, and 700gb off my MBP?
    Please advise

All you need to do is create 2 partitions on the hard drive. Format the Mac partition as GUID Mac Extended (Journaled) NOT case sensitive. When that's done, connect the drive to your Windows machine and format the other partition you just created with NTFS.

  • What is the best USB 3.0 (small) ext HDD for recording my music on

    Hello everybody!
    i start with saying...........
    A Happy Newyear!!!!!
I wish you all the very best and love.
    Now for my question.
I would like to know what is the best portable usb 3.0 external HDD for recording my music on.
Because since today i am a very happy new owner of the new Retina Macbook Pro 2.3 GHz, with 8 GB of Ram and 256 GB of Flash.
.... and yes it has the Samsung Retina Display
Since 8 years i use Logic Pro and because the flash is only 256 Gb i want to record on a external drive
and not on the internal storage (and especially now with usb 3.0).
But i would like to know what is the best portible external HDD for this function.
500 GB is enough for me because i have 2x a 2 TB for my Mac Pro and Macbook pro where i make back ups from all my music (2 back ups just to be safe).
    Some Examples i saw:
    - WD My passport USB 3.0 - 500 GB harde schijf
    - G-Technology 500GB G-DRIVE Slim USB 3.0-harde schijf
    - LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple USB 3.0 externe harde schijf
    - Freecom Mobile drive mg 500 GB harde schijf
    - Western Digital My Passport Essential SE USB 3.0 500 GB harde schijf
I would really like some good advise in this.
Hope you guys can help me out with this.

I cannot speak specifically about any of those Ext HDs because i don't own any of them..
    But...
Make sure the external drive is 7200rpm.... and not 5400rpm or a 'green' drive with something called "varipower' or a similar name...

  • X220 - USB 3.0 issue

Not at all sure this is a Lenovo X220 issue (win 7- 64bit), but I'm having the following problem with my 1tb WD My Passport Essential SE USB 3.0 external drive:
It works fine when plugged into the USB 3.0 port.  However, if I safely eject it, and use it in a USB 2.0 port, it will not be recognized if I go back to the USB 3.0 port.  I can usely get it working again in USB 3.0 mode if I reboot. (I have two of these external drives, and the behavior is identical for both of them).
I've tried lots of different things, but still can't solve this issue.  Are there any newer USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 7, or for the X220, that I should be installing?  The only one I see for USB 3.0 on the Lenovo site is for the Nec controller.
Again - not saying this is a Lenovo issue, but I don't have another computer with USB 3.0, so I was hoping people might be able to tell me about their experience with USB 3.0 and the X220.  Thank you.

I updated the USB 3 drivers from Lenovo - even tried a later version from Renesas, but no resolution of the issue.
Would be interested if anyone else out there is running USB 3 external drives in their X220 - if so, have you ever used the same drive in a USB 2 port?
    Thanks.
