My Passport Ultra Not Recognised On PC Or Laptop

I was using my WD My Passport Ultra 1TB hard drive up until recently on my XBOX ONE until with no apparent reason it stopped working/being recognised by XBOX? I removed it and attached to my PC (Windows 7) and laptop (Windows 8) to see if it was working and to see if I coiuld reformat it. The drive is recognised when I look in device manager and the light flashes when I plug it in and I can hear the drive spinning but when I try to access the drive to reformat it is not showing in Windows explorer so I can do nothing with it. Both the PC and Laptop do the same thing, I have attached pics to show what I mean. Anybody got any ideas on how to rectify this?

Hello and welcome to the WD community.
Does the unit show up when you go to disk management on computer management for windows? You can get there by right clicking on the computer icon, and clicking on manage.

  • WD My Passport Ultra not recognized

    Hi,
My WD Passport Ultra started to have some issues a couple of days ago, I noticed that, for example, when I had it connected to my TV and my TV was in stand by he would do a "beep" sound but nothing too frequent. After I turned the TV on the "beep" stopped and the disk worked normally, so I didn't worry about it. Unfortunately, the disk got worse and now it's not recognized by the TV, PC and iMac.
When I connect it to the PC, the LED lights up and stays on without flashing, the PC recognizes that I connected a drive but nothing shows up on the Windows Explorer. After a minute or so, the disk does a "beep" sound of what it seems like a reset - the LED stays on and he does that "beep" (single "beep") for about 3 times - all of them after a minute of it running. After that the disk goes into a stand by mode (the LED starts to blink very slow).
The disk is recognized in the BIOS and it also appears sometimes in the device manager under the disk drives and WD Smartware (where it shows the disk with a red "X" and 0 bytes). Another thing that sometimes happen is, if I boot my PC up with him connected, the PC gets stuck in the boot screen until I disconnect the external drive.
I have warranty, but the problem is that I have sensitive data in it that I don't have anywhere else (stupid, I know) and I can't afford sending it to a data recovery center.
The only anormal sound that the disk does is that sporadic "beep" that I mentioned, like if it was resetting itself, everything else sounds normal. I tried using my friends USB cable, from another Passport Ultra, but it didn't solve the problem. Is there anything that I can do to regain access to my data?

Thanks ArMak. I just want to give an update on this situation.
Today I've boot up my PC with the external drive connected and I noticed that it was reading but it was very very slow, so I went promptly to Windows Explorer, entered in the external drive directory and tried to copy what I needed from there. It took a while to count every file that I needed, but it did and then it started to copy but not long after that it gave me an error and I was not able to copy anything else.
So I went in to check the drive and I noticed that I wasn't able to go inside the folders anymore. I tried a recovery software, didn't help and then I updated the external drive firmware and did a reset to my PC - worried that I would lose access to it again - I did the reset, connected the drive and again, it shows up, but it reads very slow.
As of right now, I'm trying to copy what I need from there, but I'm not sure that I'll have enough time to do it before I lose access to it again. :/

  • Zen V not recognised when plugged into laptop and it won't turn

    Hi,
I just recently discovered this issue after not using my Zen V for a good month or so. Basically when I plugged it into my USB port it isn't recognised - all the software is installed yet it comes up saying new hardware was found with the name "STMP3600" and asks to to insert a disc and install the software. I remember seeing the software CD recently, but I'm experiencing that horrid feeling when you can see it at the front of your mind but you can't seem to quite grasp where it is :smileyvery-happy: I looked on this site but the only downloads are the Recovery programme (says I've not got anything plugged in) and the firmware (can't update if PC says nothing is connected).
I also can't turn it on; normally when its flat it turns on to the 'Creative' screen then flashes up with a battery warning sign and the words 'Low Battery' but this time its not the case. I tried slotting in a thin piece of metal and reseting & turning it on at the same as it recommends to get the internal recovery mode but no joy.
I can't send an email as I can't find the documents with the purchase date (it was from Amazon) and the serial code; I know it was some time in mid 2007 as I purchased it in my final year of University. Can you guess where that paper-work would be?
If anyone can give me some ideas of what to do, I would be very grateful! (And I will continue looking for my CD).

  • Buffalo MiniStation HD-PCTU3 not recognised

The hard drive was working on both my Mac computer at work (split Mac and Windows) and my macbook pro approx. 4 weeks ago.
I'm worried that it is because of the aging of my hard disk since it is almost 4 years old now.
The blue light is not on when external drive is plugged in eventhough you can still hear the disk running, but it is not recognised on any computers/laptops anymore.
I do not want to reformat my hard disk since I still have hope for retrieving precious data in within.
Thank you very much for your help.

You don't have many options here..
Try the drive on another computer.. You clearly have to get the disk to mount for it to be checked.
If you can get it to mount, then run a repair via disk utility.. if that doesn't fix it or you cannot mount it then there is no way to get around that to fix it. Using encrypted backup means even a data recovery centre can do nothing.. the end result will be garbage.

  • WD My Passport Ultra 2TB not being recognised and crashes computer

Hi, I have my external Harddrive for about 1 1/2 year. It always worked fine. Last Thursday it stopped. Suddenly it wasn't recognised anymore and it slows down my computer until halt. And it stays like this until I remove the harddrive again. After I remove it the computer works fine again and I get a little popup from Windows that tells me "You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it." I don't want to format it, because I have lots and lots of data on that drive. I made a backup from my computer I formated for an upgrade and now - if I can't get the data recovered - they are all lost. I tried already the WD LifeGuard Diagnostics but my harddrive is not recognised at all, so I can't check of any faults. It is not recognised in the Diskmanagement either. Sometimes - very rarely though - I see under "Computers" in the Explorer "Local Disk" (no Drive number). I cross checked already with another cable, another computer and even another OS. No luck.I tried to register the drive for creating a RMA but there seems a problem on the WD Website.I don't want to give up that drive. Can please someone help me? Thank you in advance

This is a user forum, not a staff one. There aren't any WD staff here, at least in an official capacity. At best you'll only get WD support here if one of the mods escalates it to them, but you'll be quicker to do it yourself via the support portal.

  • I use an external HD (WD My Passport) to store my iPhoto photos.  When I backed these up on another EHD (WD My Passport Ultra), thumbnails, and a lot of the photos did not copy (show "!").  Now 1st HD says its on a locked volume?  What happened?

I use an external HD (WD My Passport) to store my iPhoto photos.  When I copied these up on another EHD (WD My Passport Ultra): thumbnails, and a lot of the photos did not copy (show "!").  Now 1st HD says its on a locked volume?  Why?
Right before the coping finished (started with a 40 hour copy time (I know it's estimated), and with about 30 minutes left, a window popped up and said there was a name conflict between the two HD.  Then it  wrapped things up in a minute or so.  We had formatted the new EHD for Mac.  What happened?

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.

  • My passport studio is not recognised

A colleague of mine gave me an unused WD my passport Studio 320 GB, but when i inserted it in my macbook pro, it was not recognised.
After a while I disconnected the WD and almost immediately a message showed up on my screen, saying that the diski is not proper for use or something like this.... and it gave me 3 options: initialize, ignore or eject.
I chose ''initialize'' and disk utility was opened and the disk was recognised! but I didn't have any choice of verification or repair etc.
The only thing I could do was to erase the disk! I didn't do anything because I wanted to know more.... Could you help me?

  • How can i "Safely Remove" My Passport Ultra from my PC?

I can't EVER "Safely Remove" my My Passport Ultra drive from my PC!
The computer's an HP notebook (if that matters), and it's running Vista (64bit).
I can't believe that there's NO way to eject / unmount / "Safely Remove" the drive from my computer when i need to disconnect it from the port!
But i can't find any way to do it, other than shutting down the system entirely. Obviously, shutting down every time i want to unplug the drive is so RIDICULOUSLY impractical, i can't even consider it as an option.
The "Knowledge Base" pages don't seem particularly knowledgeable on the subject.
The only suggestions offereed there are to close any applications that are acccessing thedrive, including the Windows indexer and any virus/spyware programs that might be running.
Obviously I've already done that. I've set the drive to never be idexed or scanned/monitored for viruses and spyware.
And yet still, every time i try to eject the drive, it's the same message:
"Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device"
"Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later."
Sometimes, even after i manually end the WD software via the Windows services menu, they just start back up again a few seconds later (even though i set them in the services menu to only be launched manually).
But the rest of the time, even when none of the WD software is running, Windows still tells me the drive is in use and won't let me eject it.
There's GOTTA be a way around this.
I've never had this problem with any OTHER external drive.
I'm still waiting for a reply to the Support Case i submited yesterday, but i'm getting impatient.
Does anybody else know any solutions to this problem? I can't be the only one stumped by it...

    Update:
I think I finally solved the problem (no thanks to WD...).
I had already excluded the My Passport Drive from being indexed by the Windows Indexer.
And from being scanned or protected by antivirus software.
And from being monitored by Windows Defender.
What i didn't realize is that the WD Smartware software and the other WD applications were running automatically at startup, whether or not the drive was connected.
And so even if i closed them manually, they relaunched automatically in the background again.
Finally, i used a third-party program to remove all the WD applications and services from the startup and autorun lists on my computer.
This seems to be working so far.
I've been able to connect the drive, manually run the WD Smartware application, perform a backup, and close WD Smartware again. And then Windows allows me to "Safely Remove" (eject) the drive without any problems. I've gotta say that it makes no sense for WD's software to be ser up to run automatically, but that's the way it was set up by default when i installed it. Maybe it would make sense if WD expected its users to leave it connected and running all the time, but this is a PORTABLE drive. Leave it connected and constantly running in the background would defeat the purpose of being "portable" entirely, wouldn't it?

Meanwhile my ipod has all my music and podcasts up till a month ago.  What will I lose if I put my external drive music back on?

    Hi Perilman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.

  • Can't see backed up filed on My Passport Ultra

hi, Phil here, new owner... I need help - I can't see my files Steps so far: - Purchased new WD My Passport Ultra metal. Hooked it up to my Lenovo T420 / Windows 7 computer. - Installed all software & updates, etc. - Did a full disk check of all sectors (it said it would take a few hours, so I did that overnight).  All good there. - I'm using the Passport to backup my interal O/S drive which has photos, etc...so I used the defaults in the WD backup software to backup all music, photos, etc, and went with  'continuous backup' In the backup software, on the 'Backup' tab, near the top, it currently displays 'Backup accomplished successfully". HOWEVER: In Windows 7, when I open My Computer / D drive (the passport ultra), I do not see the files that were backed up. Does this mean that they are not there?  I thought I'd be able to see/click on them on the WD drive. This makes me woried that the files are not truly backed up (??) Thx so much for any advice, Phil

    Hello,
Check the backup folder. It is called "WDsmartware.swstor" and it is located in the root of your external drive. If you used WD Smartware to backup your files all backed up files should be located in this folder.

  • Referenced Master Drive is not recognised

Most of my master images are stored as referenced files on an external hard drive. However , when I connect it to my laptop , Aperture does not recognise it as my referenced library. I use the "locate masters " pane and when I put matched images in the top and bottom of the panes the reconnect and the reconnect all buttons are greyed out. The drive also is showing as "offline " in the top pane.
I am beginning to panic a little as I have 30000 referenced images...Please help.

WHAT MAKE is the drive case?
WD drives are fine, WD MyBook and Passport, not so much.
Some WD cases are built around the drive, it can't be removed or upgraded.
Otherwise it would work fine in OWC Mercury and all their drive cases are fine.

Also Sans Digital $29 USB/eSATA metal case (I have two).

  • WD My Passport Ultra is in gibberish

I did not have any issues until recently with my passport ultra. It is a fairly new product which I purchased about two months ago. I noticed when I was trying to bring a file up that all my data in the drive was completely different. I mean COMPLETELY different. I took some screenshots if it helps. It's almost like alien language. I did save previous work on another USB before I inserted the passport ultra drive but I ejected safely. I was wondering if anyone knows if thats the reason why my passport ultra is looking this way because of the previous file transfer. My laptop is really old so I'm not sure if that helps. I just need to know if there's a way for me to bring back the drive to its original state since the capacity for the drive is correct just files are all wrong. Hoping someone helps because I have a lot of precious memories in there!

    Thank you for the welcome!
Yes, I was able to access it previously until after I entered another USB. I tried putting it in different ports and they were all the same. The only computer I've tried putting it on was my sisters macbook but it says the object was not recognized. I will try it on my other computer which is a PC to see anything happens then get back to you.
