My PB froze while playin DVD (twice)~!

Hi~!
i have the latest Ti model (super-drive), the one before the Al PB...
My PB has been 'good' and never given me 'big trouble'....
today i was watching a movie (DVD) and this dvd disk (which is not an 'original' one... borrowed for the weekend from a friend who burnt it on a PC) was not well burnt.... apparently there are no physical problems concerning the disk surface...
but there was a moment in which the DVD player froze and so my Mac... it didnt respond to the "force quit" (CommdAltEsc) command, though the Num Lock and Caps Lock buttons lit when i pressed them... and I had the PB lid closed with S-video out cable to the TV set...
this is not the first time i watch movies this way... but this is the first time my Mac does not respond to the 'force quit' command...
so the question is:
even though it might be a faulty burnt dvd disk, would this reason be enough to make my Mac freeze? it happened 3 times, the 1st time i could quit DVD player and then re-insert the dvd and it went on without problems...
but the 2nd and 3rd time, My Mac froze, so i had to do what i hate the most: "pressing the Power button" (for the 2nd and the 3rd time)
i didnt update my Mac yet, i still have 10.4.5 (with the 001 SW update only)
so please help me identify the 'cause'....
thanks a lot~!
ps:
my DVD player's version:
4.6.5
iTunes:
6.0.1
QT:
7.0.3
i have iLife '05

thanks for ur response...
and thanks for the piece of advise.. i'll run that Disk Utility.. (i only ran the Permission Repair)....
and the Force Quit works well with other apps... but i was disappointed at Dvd Player... maybe it caused 'something real serious' so it would not respond even to FQ....
but the 1st time i ran this DVD in mention, when it stopped, i could easily quit the DVD Player... but donno why.. the 2nd and the 3rd time didnt....

  • Time machine froze while formatting hard drive.

I have an Iomega HDD 80GB USB 2.0 External Desktop Hard Drive. I have used this hard drive before on both my Mac and a PC, and it worked fine. The other day, I plugged in my external hard drive so that I could use it to back up my system on Time Machine. The external drive had some files on it already, so when I plugged it into my Mac, Time Machine said that I would have to format it. So I went ahead and allowed it to start formatting the disk, but then system preferences froze while it was formatting. I couldn't eject the drive so I had to force quit and restarted my computer. Then when I plugged in the external drive again, the computer said that it could not read the disk. So I opened Disk Utility and tried to reformat the hard drive. However, Disk Utility froze about a minute after it started reformatting the external hard drive, while the progress bar was on "Creating partition map". Once again, I had to force quit the application and I restarted my computer. Upon plugging my external hard drive in AGAIN, the computer said it could not read the disk so I tried reformatting the hard drive (through Disk Utility) yet another time, and it froze again. I tried this again and it froze again. I tried plugging the hard drive into a PC, and it did not show up in "My Computer." It did, however, show up in Device Manager, and Device Manager said that the device was working fine (I also checked all of the USB Root Hubs etc, as per the instructions in the Iomega support Answer ID 1235). So basically, the computer said the device had no problems, yet there was no way I could actually see any of the files on the disk (or format it) because it wasn't showing up in My Computer. And I can't seem to format it on my Mac because it freezes up every time.
Is there any way I can format this hard drive?? Is it corrupted and unusable? What are some other things I can try?
Edit: I also tried to reformat the drive by partitioning it in Disk Utility (following the directions on the Iomega support article) and Disk Utility froze when the progress bar said "Creating partition map."

A TM drive must be partitioned using GUID and formatted Mad OS Extended, Journaled. Do this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you want to use the drive on Windows you will need to create two partitions rather than one. After performing the partitioning set one partition for Mac OS Extended, Journaled and the other for MS-DOS. TM will backup to the OS X partition. A TM backup volume should be at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up, so be sure the OS X partition you create is large enough to use for TM. The remainder of the drive's space can then be allocated for a Windows volume.

  • My Iphone froze while I was updating my OS

    Hello,
My Iphone 3G froze while is was upgrading the OS installed on it. Even when i restart my phone the "Connected to Itunes" logo appears. I have even tried to hold home and sleep button for 10 seconds with no results.
I've also tried reinstalling Itunes, but the Iphone doesn't appear.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 2g, and 3GS have crashed every time on updates on XP, vista, and win7. The restore usually doesn't work the first time or 2 until you've rebooted the computer once or twice. I even had to create a second user on the computer, load a separate itunes on it to get it to restore(with apple guy walking me through it) then switching to my normal user and backing up to the phone. Really wastes a ton of time.

macbook froze while online. hard shutdown. when it restarted, an error message appeared saying finder shut down unexpectedly containing a message box with a long list of technical jibberish.  after clicking OK that it would send an error report to Apple, the same error message box appeared again and again every time OK was clicked.  Now the macbook will not turn on at all

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • TS1538 My iPhone froze while installing the new update.  I don't have iTunes on my work computer and I'm on the road.  Any idea how to fix?

Need help getting iPhone 4s unstuck.  It froze while installing update.  Screen shows iTunes logo and USB plug.

If your phone is in recovery mode (You see the iTunes graphic on the phone), you MUST connect the device to a computer and restore the operating system.  There is no supported way to get around it.  The device had a problem installing the update and it crashed.  Sorry.

When i plugged my ipod into the computer it started to make buzzing and screeching noises. It became hot so i removed it and then the screen froze while it continued to make these noises. I have never had anything like this happen. (never gotten it wet or had it exposed to extreme temperatures) It is also unresponsive to any buttons on the ipod and it didn't show up when i plugged it into my computer. What do I do? Also if it is unfixable could i get a free one from apple?

  • Apps froz while trying to up date

apps froze while trying to update apps

    Hey jakesam,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues updating application. Do the apps seem like they are not downloading? and display "Waiting"?. If so, the following is a past discussion that dealt with a similar issue, the answer may help you as well:
App updates won't download on my...: Apple Support Communities
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4111336
Try tapping the App, so that it changes to Paused instead of Waiting, then tap it again to resume the install.
Make sure you don't have any paused downloads in other apps either, like the App Store or iTunes Store.
If that doesn't do it, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

  • Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

I am unable to 'Stop Import', as when I press to stop the import my Mac does not respond. There is a continuous loading sign next to my iPhone device.
