  • Advise Requested - Building a Home Server using Solaris 10

I'm currently a Wintel sysadmin, and I'm relatively new to Unix. I know the basics, and I have been reading up on it. I'll be taking a the 200 level Sun class in August or September. I'll be working with Solaris on an increased basis at work very soon. Since I've been thinking of building a home server for some time I thought it would be a good opportunity (and challenge) to teach myself Solaris by building a server with Solaris 10 for Intel processors.
I would like to setup a server with a RAID mirror. It's mostly going to be a Samba file server, Apache web server, and backup server for all of my home Windows Vista PCs. I'll likely put in two 1 terabite HDDs in it. I might also use it as a VPN server for my home network eventually as a I learn more.
Does anyone have suggestions they could give me on hardware? I prefer to build an ATX compliant clone.
So far this is the motherboard I'm considering:
    http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?&scriteria=BA23931
ANY ADVISE would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Change your SSH port to something other than 22! Make sure your ssh keys use passphrases. You can setup keychain (ssh-agent) on the server and clients to keep keys in memory if you desire without constantly retyping (and for automated backups).

  • Any suggestions for building a home network (in a modest...

Any suggestions for building a home network (in a modest 1600 sq. ft. home) with the following requirements...
    1) Laptop(s) and PC share broadband (cable) internet connection
    2) Access files on PC from laptop(s) and vice versa
    3) PC and laptop(s) share printer (Canon Pixma 610)
    4) Send media on PC to TV
    5) Send music to wireless speakers (not purchased yet)
    Note hardware specs:
    A) One laptop runs on Windows XP and has an Intel PRO wireless 2915ABG network connection
    B) PC runs Windows XP Media Center
I was thinking about the wireless N broadband router 300.  From the experiences of the community, will I be able to achieve my goal?  Beside a PC adapter, is there any other hardware I will need?
    A couple other questions.
The router will likely be sitting right next to my PC.  Does the PC need to have a wireless adapter or can it be wired from the router to the PC?
When will the media extender be available?  Will it work with Windows XP?
    Thank you.
    Chris

I personally might not buy Wireless-N, but the idea of being on the bleeding edge is nice.
Anyway, whichever router you choose, you should be able to accomplish almost everything you need.
You'll be able to share your internet amongst all of the computers, and share files between them all. Local firewalls and permission settings on individual computers could potentially pose a problem.
Sending media to your TV may or may not be possible, depending on what other hardware you have. A router itself would not be able to do that, as a TV doesn't usually have any form of WiFi, but if you had a box connected to it for displaying content on the TV, you could do something like that...
Wireless speakers are generally a separate wireless system. As far as I know, there is a wireless transmitter that sits next to the amp (or other sound source), and broadcasts the music wirelessly to the speakers. You'd have to make sure the speakers and wireless router are on different channels as to not cause interference.
Don't know much about the media extender, but highly likely will be compatible with XP.

  • Tutorial - Building Business Components

I am using Oracle JDeveloper3.0 (Build 532) on Windows NT. I am trying to work through the above tutorial, but when I try to invoke the Business Components or New Entity Objects, nothing happens.
Have not installed some components correctly ? Do I need to make any changes to the Gallery.INI file ?
Thank you very much for your response..
    Sudarshan

    Sudarshan,
It should never be necessary for you to edit your gallery.ini to get default installation behavior.
Are you sure you sucessfully installed JDeveloper?
My JDeveloper 3.1 Gallery.ini looks as pasted below. Yours should look similar.
    You may have to re-install.
    I hope this helps,

  • Building a Home Theater, Suggestions?

So I am looking to build my first really home theater and I am really looking for a good system, but do to some restriction by my girlfriend I am looking for a compact size system.  I have done some research and am stuck between the Mirage Nanosat System and Sub or the Boston Acoustic Soundware XS (which unfortunately BBY does not sell the Soundware XS).  I also have no idea what receivers would be recommended for either of these, from what I had read the Boston Acoustic pair great with Denon so I was checking out the Denon 1611.  I also had my eyes on the Yamaha A700.
I hope you awesome people out there can give me some suggestion or point me in the right direction.
    Thanks!

Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System with Powered Subwoofer
    Model: PC600 | SKU: 8206201
Learn more about Magnolia Premium Installation   Enjoy lush layers of crisp audio with this speaker system that harnesses advanced audio technologies, including sonically matched speakers and Balanced Double Surround System high-definition drivers to create an intense listening experience.

    Sale: $799.98
Without having personal experience with that Boston Acoutic set, I cannot give an opinion based upon that. However, the Mirage nanosat set is great, 5.0 system for about $600 is a good deal, especially since the speakers are omni-directional. Omni-directional is great for more open rooms, as the speakers distribute the sound 360 degress rather than in a forward arc. Even turning the speakers backwards they still sound the same.
Another option is the Definitive Technology PC600 5.1 System. A great full 5.1 system for $800 using small compact speakers with a full range of sound. Each speaker has a tweeter, a mid-range, as well as a small woofer giving you a full sound from each speaker. I would recommend heading into your local Best Buy with a Magnolia demo room to hear the Mirage Speakers as well as the PC600 set.
For either system the Denon 1611, or 1911 would be perfect.
The mirage set will be close to $1,500 or so, the Definitive set will put you about $1,300.
Hope that helps out a little bit, however I'm sure mustang will have some other great options.

  • Building Business Area through Command Line

    Hi --
Some of the adminstrator tasks such as...
    1) Creating a folder
    2) Creating a join
    3) Creating a item class and attaching the item class to a filed
I would like to do these tasks eighter programtically (via PL/SQL) or through a command line script.
Just wondering whether discoverer has some APIs or commands which i can use to accomplish these tasks.
Any information regarding this would be really helpful.
    Thanks

    Hello,
I did try with the scripts given by you and the log says -
    Exported the following Data:
    Exported the following Business Areas:
         Payables
    Exported the following Folders:
    Exported the following Item classes:
    Exported the following Item Hierarchies:
    Exported the following Date Hierarchies:
    Exported the following Functions:
    Exported the following Summaries:
    Exported the following Workbooks:
Exported the following Automated Summary Management Policies:
    13/05/2008 13:49:07
Are you sure that complete business area has been exported?
When I tried with Administrator GUI, the log file contains list of all folder names, items, item classes etc. Even the Administrator Guide says :
    /business_area
The /business_area modifier enables you to specify a business area for import, export or deletion
    Information Details
    Syntax:
    /business_area <business area>
    Notes:
When used with the /export command, this modifier only exports the business area definition (e.g. business area name and description).
If you want to export the entire business area (i.e. including folders, item classes, hierarchies etc), use with the /all modifier also
This can be found at - http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/html/B13916_02/command_line.htm#sthref1227
So, what is your say ? Shall I ignore the log file and go ahead and import it or something is missing in the scripts.
    Thanks.

  • Should I use my older MBP to build a home network?

Please forgive this most basic of all questions. I want to make the most of an older MBP I must keep in case I have to send in the one I use every day and I've read many suggestions to use it as a home network server. Could someone tell me if this seems worthwhile in a situation where we have 20mbs wireless with adequate storage and file sharing via MobileMe and DropBox. There are three Macs on the network not including two iPod Touches and one iPad. Our backup scenarios are adequate, and while I like the geek-factor of using Time Machine wirelessly to backup the newer MBP, that alone is not enough to justify the server setup. We already print wirelessly to a Canon PIXMA.
Am I missing any features that warrant exploring this further? Thanks for any ideas.

I'm not sure what you're asking. You can install OS X Server on your MBP, but I can't tell from your post what features of OS X Server you're looking to use.
Generally speaking, laptops are not the best platform for servers, but they will work. Some folks bristle when there is mention of a laptop server, some say go for it, and I would say it depends on what the server is needed to do. I've been running a website using a spare copy of 10.4 Server on a G3 iMac for several years - but that's a far cry from using a G3 iMac to really use the functions of OS X Server. If you're satisfied with your backups and file sharing capabilities, a dedicated server may be overkill, and added maintenance. If you want or need more functionality that your current setup provides, then a server is worth considering.
If you're not familiar with OS X Server, there will be a learning curve and possibly some frustration, and you'll want to back up the server as well which may add more work to keeping your network where you want it to be.
So the short answer is, what will the server do?

  • How do you build a home-made external hard drive?

I've been browsing the market, looking for a good drive when I came to the idea that I could build my own. Unfortunately, there aren't any clear internet articles that I could find on how to build a drive and what parts would be needed.
So, How do you build an external hard drive? Please reply with the parts needed, places to find them, and assembly directions.

    Kappy wrote:
However, for an external drive there's no real benefit to using SATA drives
There are very real benefits to avoiding obsolete IDE/PATA technology.
For example, check newegg.com's selection of HDs in the 500GB & up
category. Score: SATA 37, PATA 7. ....and at 1TB: SATA 9, PATA 0.
While you're at it, compare prices (as best you can). SATA drives are
the same price or less expensive than the few surviving PATAs -- and
there are no PATA equivalents to the latest generation high-performance
SATA drives. The "Great PATA Extinction" started several years ago.
... because the Firewire interface isn't nearly as fast as the drive.
Nonsense. There are only a handful of drives fast enough to saturate
a firewire 800 link -- and then, only when the drive is nearly empty.
AFAIK, there are NO existing high-capacity HDDs (500GB & up) fast
enough to saturate a FW800 link when the drive is half full. Sustained
transfer rates drop by about 50% as the drive fills from the outermost
    to the innermost tracks.
BTW, here are two SATA enclosures that feature quick-swap slide-in
drive trays. Assembly is a snap -- no disassembly required, just four
screws to attach the drive to the tray, then slide it in. Extra trays are
$19 each, so you can keep several drives conveniently "on tap."

    Hi,
Based on the specs of the LG unit:
    (a) SCART to VGA: Most likely the signal frequency on VGA port of a normal computer monitor does not match the signal frequency of the SCART port therefore you can't get the pictures/images.
    (b) SCART to DVI: you need more than just a cable, you need a converter because SCART uses analog signals and DVI use digital signals.
