My PC crashed - how do l retrieve or get the music I purchased??

My Laptop died - I reinstalled all the programs. But, I have lost all my Purchased Music on this laptop. I tried the second laptop - iTunes program does not show my purchased songs either. How do I retrieve all the songs I purchased (I see them in the purchase history).
PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks.

Do you have a back up of the purchases? If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports (such as the one above) in the forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on the link at the bottom of this page you'll be able to email your query: iTMS Customer Service
If you have an iPod that still has the purchases on it the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

My hard  drive crashed.  How do I get the music I purchased from Itunes back?

    Thanks Roaminggnome,
I just spoke with a friend who like you is into Apple and he just walked me through the Cloud.  At least I was able to get those songs back.
    Thanks.
Do you know --- the last time I tried to back up my itunes it asked for 106 cd's do you how to direct the backup to the external drive?   By the way I found 3 back up cds from 2010 and 1 of the 3 cd's had an error.

  • I'm having issues syncing my ipod to my external hardrive's library. How do I sync and get the music from my external hard drive?

I recently moved the music from my old computer in itunes to my external hardrive (changed the media file location and consolidated library). I connected my external hardrive to my new computer (windows 7) and changed my itunes media file to my external hardrive and consolidated my new computer's library to my external hardrive. When I connect my iPod, it is only grabbing the music from my new computer and not my external hardrive. How do I get the music from my external hardrive onto my iPod?

Did you move the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder?
File > Add folder to library and select the folder with music on the external.

  • Old laptop crashed - how do I get the music stored on iPod into new laptop?

My old laptop crashed so I cannot follow the instructions for moving my iTunes library to a new computer because I can no longer go into my old iTunes and switch it to manual update and enable disk use. How can I get the music stored on my iPod into my new iTunes? I have a 60GB iPod video. Thanks

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • I have all my music on an external media drive that has crashed. How can I get the music of my ipod touch back onto the comupter without loosing the music when it syncs?

I have all my music on an external media drive that has crashed. How can I get the music of my ipod touch back onto the comupter without loosing the music when it syncs. in order to start rebuilding my music collection?

You should be able to recover the media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer but I'm not sure what the implications are for your application settings. You can probably transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any other media using third party tools, then restore the device from the backup. That should switch the assocation of the device to the new library but it is not something I've personally tested.
When you get it all working, make a backup!

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.

I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.

    please someone help

    Hi Glenn,
You need to Authorize your Mom's computer to your iTunes sign on. Sign on to iTunes, then go to Store at the top of the screen, and select Authorize this Computer.
Then you can download your purchases from your iTunes library by going to the iTunes Store (the one in the sidebar), Music, and then under Quick Links, Purchased.
Once the Purchased window comes up, select "Not on this Computer", and then select All Songs. Your purchased songs will display with a cloud next to them, and you can download them selectively or "Download All" (lower right-hand corner).
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers,

  • My old computer crashed how do i get the music from my ipod to sinc with my itunes library?

My old computer crashed how do i get the music from my ipod to sinc with my itunes library?

You should be able to copy iTunes purchases to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. For music that you've bought from other sources or copied from your own CDs then have you not got a backup of them on, for example, an external drive that you can copy onto the computer ? If not then you will need to find a third-party program to copy them off - this post mentions some that were around a couple of years ago, whether they still exist and work I don't know.

You should be able to copy iTunes purchases over to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. For music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs) you will need a third-party program to copy them back from your iPad - there are some listed half-way down this page which should work : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Help! Bought a used iMac (2008) and I'm trying to install quicktime but its asking me for a password and has Apple in the "Name" spot.  How do I retrieve or reset the password?

    Can anyone help...
I just bought a used iMac (2008) from an ebay seller and I'm trying to install quicktime but its asking me for a password and has Apple in the "Name" spot.
How do I retrieve or reset the password?
It came with the upgrade of Mountain Lion but I cannot find quicktime in the applications.  When I try to install anything this Installer Password thing comes up... so I'm stuck.

I think you're slightly misunderstanding something, so maybe I'll try to chime in, even though everyone has said it in various ways.
Before OSX 10.7 (aka Lion) came out, the upgrades to OSX belonged to the Mac and not the user. Probably there was a technical legality in the user agreement that you couldn't do that, but everyone did. I could sell a Mac with Snow Leopard (or anything before that) by just erasing the hard drive, and reinstalling OSX. Then ship it to the buyer. Now, I was pretty honest as a seller, and including not only the original installation discs but also any upgrade. I would only sell a Mac if I was replacing it, so I always was getting the brand new version.
With OSX 10.7, upgrading was done online, with no disks. So the upgrades were tied to an Apple ID rather than the machine. Recently, I sold a MacBook Pro (to upgrade to a 27" iMac), which came with Lion. I had promised the buyer that it would come with Mountain Lion, but I didn't know that the upgrade was tied to my Apple ID. I made good with the buyer by sending along a $20 Apple App Store card so that she could upgrade to Lion.
So what everyone is saying here is that you need the original Installation discs or Snow Leopard disk to reinstall and wipe out the Mountain Lion that is on your Mac. It doesn't belong to you, it belongs to the seller, and without his Apple ID and password, you cannot use it. Once you do a reinstall of Snow Leopard, then you can upgrade to Lion and then to Mountain Lion. I do not believe you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure.
If the seller claimed that you were getting Mountain Lion, then he was lying to you (or being more civil, maybe he just didn't know like I did). If you bought the used machine from Amazon Sellers or from eBay, then you have recourse through the feedback system or through PayPal. If you bought it any other way, you're on your own.

  • When your computer crashes how do your get the music on your iphone back on your new computer

when your computer crashes how do your get the music on your iphone back on your new computer?

The music sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
