My pc died with (stupidly) no external backup, save iTunes Match. Will I be able to download my itunes library to a new Mac?

Hello! I am new here! Here is my question: my pc just died with my iTunes music library. Foolishly, I had no physical external backup, but am a subscriber to iTunes Match. I plan to purchase a MacBook Air ASAP. Will I be able to download my music to my new MacBook from the Cloud? From there, I plan to copy all to an external hard drive (like I should have done in the first place!). Any info will be most appreciated! Thanks.

Yes. As long as all your songs you lost have been Matched or Uploaded to iTunes Match you can download your entire library from the cloud.
It might take some time though

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

    Thanks

The Apple genius at the Apple store told me this would work. It failed. Basically, updating your iPhone 3GS to iOS5 wipes your 3GS of its data so you can't really do this. Some data worked. Music, photos etc didn't work at all.
I suggest avoiding iCloud completely for a few weeks until Apple gets it working.

  • External backup of iTunes Library

My itunes library is on an external drive. I would like to move it back to my iMac internal drive so carbonite can back it up, BUT..I believe there are two files I need to relocate, or do I just indicate in iTunes that there is a new location for the Library?

Well, firstly I'd suggest backing up your library (.itl file) while it works with your music on the external.
If you're just looking to backup your library, that being the .itl file that iTunes uses to manage all your music, then I'd suggest just copying the file and placing it in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder, or somewhere safe.
If, as I presume is your actual intention, you want to backup your music files then you're going to need to move all of the folders of music into the iTunes Music folder within Music/iTunes. I'm assuming you have iTunes managing your music into folders according to its own rules, with the iTunes Music folder specified as being located on your external. If not then let me know.
The next step is to change the preferences in iTunes to let it know that the new location for your music will be on the iMac, presumably in Music/iTunes/iTunes Music - at this point your music files should still be on the external, though this would probably work if you've already moved them across. Also be sure that "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" are both checked, unless you have your own file management situation going in which case this method probably wont work.
Once you've changed the iTunes Music folder location in preferences, just go to Advanced and select Consolidate Library, and iTunes should automatically copy all of your music files across from the external to the mew location for the iTunes Music folder you specified in the prefs.
How much music do you have - this could take a while

Finally made the switch from PC to Mac, after my PC crashed and burned. I Do not have a backup on an external drive, and I was unable to recover any data from the trashed PC hard drive.
Can I download my library, or is there a way to get my itunes content on my new Macbook Pro? I have almost 10 years of music and stuff on my iTunes, so I really hope there is a fix!
    Thanks!

after using the migration assistant, it appears that only my iTunes purchases loaded into my library on the new MCB, not allllll the other mp3's i've loaded in from other sources, although they are sitting in the back.up folders on my external drive. those mp3's have to be opened manually to get them back into iTunes. there has to be a more effiecient way to load these tunes right?????

  • The computer I used for itunes Died.  I went to transfer my itunes library to my new computer and it is telling me I can only sync purchases.   I had downloaded more than a undred CDs to my itunes before selling them.  How do I regain access?

HI.  I am hoping someone can help me.  The computer I have used for the last 5 years for my I tunes died.   I got a new computer and went to transfer my itunes play lists over - and see that I can only transfer purchases.  To make matters worse, in order to syn cthe ipod to future purchases it will only sync what is on this computer.  Since I cannot access the old computer, I cannot "copy" the files as all the help topics are directing me to do.  And just authorizing this new computer means I am going to lose all of my non purchased music and playlists.  Can someone PLEASE help me

in order for you to save your CD music you will have to use a 3rd party extractor to put the content onto the new computer

  • HT1751 I am trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive but it won't complete due to 'insufficient privileges for some of the items'. Am I doing something wrong and is there a solution to this problem?

    Hi All,
I am currently trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive so that I can copy it onto my new Macbook Pro. I have been following the steps posted on the Apple website however each time I get a dialogue box stating:
'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items'.
Is this because I have items that were bought under another persons iTunes account? If so, is there a solution to this problem? Or am I doing something completely wrong?
    Thanks in advance,

  • HT1373 How do I backup my itunes library to an external drive

My iTunes library is unstable.  I have two questions:
    1) How do I backup my iTunes library to an external drive?
    2) Why am I constatntly prompted to add my computer to iCloud when I have done so multiple times?
When opening iTunes, I receive he error message: "Please Sign In Again,  iTunes Match has encountered an error.  Please choose Sign Out and he Sign In from the iTunes Store menu and try again."
I tried downloading and installing/repairing the latest iTunes.  That did not correct the problem.
Also, I have sync'd to iCloud.  Every time I select iMatch from iTunes, I am prompted to Add This Computer to iCloud.  I have already done this multiple times.

  • How do I backup my iTunes library to an external drive?

    Hi there,
Is there any way of backing up my itunes library direct to a backup device such as an external hard drive or online back up software? The only option I can see is to back up to disc but that will take 50 discs!

*Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows Only)*
Grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes.

  • How do I backup the iTunes Library to an external hard drive?

I have no space on my computer anymore for anything and I need to export and save all my music on an external hard drive (MYbook) is that possible??? Do I really need to just backup everything on OUTDATED CDs or what???!!! That just seems like an insane process and I know it's possible for MAC users...

Will I be able to open the DNG files in LR with the edits preserved? Will I be able to open the PSD files in LR with the edits preserved? Any import/catalog etc issues between PSE10 and LR?

Lightroom has no problem reading DNG files. Whether the edits you have done to the DNGs you have originally edited in Photoshop Elements 10 I'm not sure. ACR edits made to DNGs are saved in the DNG file itself, as apposed to a XMP sidecar file, so LR should see those edits. At the worst you will get an exclamation mark in the upper right hand corner of the imported DNGs and clicking on that exclamation mark you will get a dialog box asking you to either import settings from disk or overwrite settings. you would select import settings from disk.

  • Transferring Itunes Library to a new computer with songs on External HD?

    I have a similar problem
I need to transfer my itunes library to my new laptop
I believe i have to install a new version of itunes on the new laptop
My mp3's and videos are all manually arranged on an external harddrive. Only the itunes program is on the internal harddrive of my computer
Is it possible to transfer my itunes library to the new laptop? I want to preserve my playlist.
    A mistake i did....
Few months ago, i reformatted our old computer. Installed the new version of itunes. I also copied the .itl, xml music file from old itunes folder to the new itunes folder (re-installed itunes). When i opened the new itunes, my library was blank. What mistake did i make? Should i have hold the SHIFT key (i use windows) while i open the itunes so that it'll ask me to look for an old library?

    There is a simpler way.
Copy the iTunes folder containing your library files from My Music onto the external drive, but not into the music folder. It is best to avoid confusion by keeping them separate.
Install iTunes on the new PC. Don't add any music yet.
With iTunes closed, drag the iTunes folder out of the Music folder to the desktop.
Plug in the external drive and copy the iTunes folder from the old PC into the Music folder.
Adjust the permissions on this folder so the account you are using has full control. Here is help if you don't know how:
    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/2464a180-e5dc-45d1-a2b8-3c8a 2b571e9d1033.mspx
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/05/25/how-to-take-ownership-and-grant-permiss ions-in-windows-vista/
Before attempting to open iTunes make sure your external drive has the same letter as it had before - I think you already know how to do this.
You should also check the permissions on your music folder as above.
Fingers crossed, when you start iTunes things should be as they were on the old PC.
The crucial thing is that the path to the music files has not changed.
