My PC was stolen during a break in, aside from filing a police report with the serial
My 2012 16" Macbook pro was stolen from my livingroom during a break in yesterday.
The first thing I did was call the police and file a report including the laptop serial number with the officer who arrived on scene.
Then I changed my apple id password along with my email passwords for security.
The police told me that should anyone try to sell it in a store it will come up flagged since I reported the serial number. However I'm wondering if anyone can give me more information regarding how people track the computer location because I've been researching online and it seems like it is done often, although I don't think I registered for icloud.
Some newer devices with a built in GPS can be set up to send a location to the iCloud server if the feature is activated before the device is stolen, and the device is turned on/not discharged battery, and it is able to connect to a registered WiFi network, and it has not been restored to new condition by the person who finds the device.

If you did not set up Find My iPod on the unit before it was stolen, then there's no way to trace it. Whether filing a police report would accomplish anything I can't say, but it's all you can do. They might get lucky.
If you purchased the iPod with a credit card, check with your card issuer and ask if they offer any sort of loss/theft coverage. Some card programs do, and would replace the iPod for you.

There is no way for Apple to track an iOS a device by serial number. Your data is unprotected and you should take steps to make sure that nothing is compromised.

It appears to be offline on the Find My iPhone app. If the person who has it turns it on only for a brief moment and then turns it off immediately, will the location still be found? Once it returns to being offline will the location still be sent to me? And also, how can I retrieve my pictures from my iCloud?

I am trying to use the locate my macbook that was stolen. How do I know if it is set up on the service. It shows on the list but just says it is offline and doesn't say when or where it last was. I am trying to either locate it or erase it. HELP
Since you can see it in your device list it must have Find My Mac activated, but you're going to have to wait for them to take it online in order to either locate, lock or wipe it. Until it goes online you can't do anything. http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/find-my-device/
