My peripheral crashes Snow Leopard (10.6) System Preferences

Some peripherals may only run if their driver is in the same 32bit/64bit compatibility mode as is active in System Preferences.
If you haven't been able to find a new driver for Snow Leopard that has worked before on Intel Macs, chances are you just need to enable 32 bit mode for System Preferences.
To change the mode:
1. Quite from System Preferences menu, in System Preferences.
2. Go to Boot Hard drive -> Applications, and click ONCE on System Preferences.
3. Click on File menu -> Get Info.
4. Change the mode in the checkbox from 64 bit to 32 bit mode.
Select

Actually I think I'll try to integrate it with my other tip:

I have a Macbook pro 2009 with Snow Leopard.  Which system can I install without running into complicated problems which I will not be able to solve by myself- a person with limited problem solving abilities. (Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite?)

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the  size and RAM installed.
"Yesterday I couldn't update the maps on my Garmin because it said the OS I had wouldn't work"
What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
The OSs will get more resource hungry the higher you go.

  • Snow Leopard Chinese Input System Demo & Request for ideas to improve it

I had been looking for a detailed Snow Leopard Chinese Input System demo online for sometime and failed. What I found were just short video clips of people trying to use the system for a few words here and there, nothing detailed. So I've taken the initiative to create such a video and hope people interested learning more about the Chinese Input System may find it useful.
    http://kempton.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/snow-leopard-chinese-input-system-demo/
I like the system and like to see users of the system sending in suggestions to Apple for them to improve it and make the system even better.
Here are some comment/ideas of mine,
    1) I love the predictive word association, it has saved me time in entering many words.
    2) Add an "undo" to the track pad input.
Sometimes I see the right word predicted but my hand was too fast and I added a dot or stroke that takes out the word I want.
    3) My pen stroke order sometimes ***** and this mess up the recognition system badly.
I wonder will it be difficult to implement a display tool that
given a passage of "Chinese text" as input
have the system "display" the "correct" pen strokes order of how the words are expected in the system. The stupidly simple word “生” should not take 20-30 seconds for someone to fight with the system to get the correct recognition.
Here is how I captured some of my thoughts earlier this month in Chinese typing the article in Snow Leopard,

  • Trouble downloading Snow Leopard sw updates- system crashes during update installs. I'm only trying to get to the AppStore to download

I've upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard... fine.
Installing the system updates (the AppStore isn't in the Snow Leopard install, just available via a system update)
The updates appear to have downloaded ok, then the system restarts to install, and .... CRASH. All's I'm trying to do is legally get to Lion.
I have a 15" Macbook Pro, 2gb ram, dual core Intel, 120gb drive.
Should I re-install Snow Leopard, or anyone have any good ideas?  I suppose it could even be a hardware problem of some sort, but the system seeems stable unless I try to do the sw updates.
    Please help!
    Thanks all!

dual core Intel   /    All's I'm trying to do is legally get to Lion.
    Lion requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
From here > Apple - OS X Lion - Technical specifications
Click your Apple icon top left corner of your screen then from the drop down menu click: About This Mac
If it doesn't say:  Intel Core 2 Duo
Then you can't upgrade the Mac to Lion.

Anyone have any ideas how I can get iPhoto back working ?

    Neil,
    Sure.
If you don't have Pacifist, download it from Version Tracker or Mac Update..
Once you have Pacifist, insert your Snow Leopard Disk and then open Pacifist.
Scroll down through the files in Pacifist which show all the files on the Snow Leopard DVD.
Follow the path you already showed.
Once you find the file, click on it to highlight it and then have Pacifist install that file for you.
You probably need to restart but not positive. Restart anyway.
    Then try iPhoto....

  • MacBook Pro Keeps Crashing Snow Leopard

This has happened twice now and I have had to re-install Snow Leopard. For some reason, it just crashed. I cannot think of anything I was doing or had done to create an issue. I restart and it won't restart. I get the circle under the Apple until finally the Apple turns into a circle with a line through it. I have to boot from the install disc. I run disk utility and repair everything. Try to restart and same thing. Finally, I have ti completely reinstall Snow Leopard.
This has happened 1 time with my other MacBook white.

This kind of symptom may be as simple as damaged hard drive.
You may try ton install on an external drive and use it for a while. It it stays clean, try using your internal drive again without a lot of hope
You can try using Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the whole system, it may not work, and in that case, you can be pretty sure there is something with the drive.
Sometimes, RAM may be the culprit too, but I doubt this is a software issue.

  • ATT Option Ultra Express Card Crashes Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6)

My Macbook Pro ran hot from continual SyncServer issues and Disk Utility Permissions that were unrepairable in Mac OS 10.5.8 Disk Utility.
So I upgraded to Snow Leopard and the Permissions pretty much cleared up, but a new problem arose:
My AT&T Option Ultra Express Card crashes Mac 10.6 as soon as it is inserted in the MP Pro, even after removing Globetrotter and launch2net software.
It seems as if Option needs to release a firmware upgrade to work with Snow Leopard, or Apple needs to sort out the incompatibility of Express Cards.
Until then, I'm paying AT&T monthly for mobile Internet service that is now unusable.

Since I've updated to Snow Leopard I've the same problem: CS4 crashes every time I quit it, but it seems to work properly.

  • Earliest photoshop compatible with OSX (snow leopard) 64 bit system?

What is the earliest release of photoshop that will run on this system?
    Thank you.

Photoshop 7 was an OS 9 program, it won't work under Snow Leopard. According to the Wikipedia that last compatible version for Photoshop 7 was OS 10.1.

  • I am currently trying to load Snow Leopard onto my system and it is frozen

I am currently trying to load Snow Leopard onto my laptop, I have the 10.4.11 system, but the process is stuck on 41 minutes remaing and has been for about half an hour, so nothing is budging!  Please help, I am too scared to stop it as the guy in the shop said "whatever you do just let it run its course!"  Thank you, Kate

Boot from your bootable backup drive - restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for your external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the computer starts up do the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Leave DU open and do the following:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal drive. Source means the external drive.
This will restore your old system so you can continue using the computer.
An alternative to the above is that after formatting the internal drive restart from the Snow Leopard DVD and install Snow Leopard on the freshly formatted internal drive. You can then restore your Home folder and other applications through the Setup Assistant which will provide an option to restore your files from another Mac or hard drive.

  • Installing Snow Leopard over old system OS

I just set up a new MBP by copying my old hard disk from another MBP to the new one. The old one was running OS 10.4.11. So the new one now has OS 10.4.11 on it. Can I simply put in the OS disk that came with the new one to update to 10.6?

I thought you could not install an old OS on a new machine; e.g., a machine that is intended to run Snow Leopard could not boot from TIger. That said, does the new machine actually RUN with the old OS?

  • Restore snow leopard without removing files/preferences

I installed Lion when it first came out but i want to go back to snow leopard to be able to use Pro tools 9 software. However, i dont want to lose some files and settings. How can i do this? i do have a time machine disk which was used atleast once with Snow leopard. Thanks

    Backup first. Then,
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Yosemite: Doesn't Appear On Snow Leopard's Startup Disk Preference Pane

There is a major bug in Yosemite. It doesn't appear in the Startup Disk Preference Pane in Snow Leopard. Is there a solution for this? By the way, I can choose Yosemite by booting with the Option key. Also, how can I change the Recovery HD partition Icon?

I managed to change the Icon. The problem is still there.

  • ICal Helper Crashing (Snow Leopard 10.6.2)

I no longer get iCal alarm notifications on my desktop. I believe it's because iCal Helper keeps crashing (log example at the end of this message). I've tried deleting iCal caches, preferences, et al. to no avail. I really hope that it's not caused by one or more corrupt events because the process of elimination would be extremely painful given how many meetings are in my calendar. Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks!

    Brian,
Did this behavior start after applying the Mac OS X 10.6.2 Update using Software Update. If so, try downloading and reinstalling the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo).
Have you backed up your iCal data using iCal>File>Export...>iCal Archive? If not do so now.
Since you appear to be using MobileMe, also try: Mac OS X v10.5, v10.6: Resetting the SyncServices folder.
Also note the discussion in: Apple - Support - Discussions - Event Reminder crashes at start up ...

  • Crashing Snow Leopard going back directly to Welcome screen without warning

    Dear all,
it´s now the third time that I do experience a weird crash. I had quite a few programmes opene, so it wasn´t clear which one caused the error. This time I think the last thing I did was moving spaces to another area and clicking on an image opened in "imageJ". Without warning, suddenly the computer screen went blue, then there is the welcome screen after a few seconds. No trace of my user still in operation or having been recently in operation, all programmes obviously shut down, I have to re-log on to my user and reopen all the programmes and files. It is surely not a sudden power failure because it happened on a fully charged MacBook pro battery connected to power, the chap working next to me had no problems!...
Log of the last minutes before crash is full of_:

Several of these strange error messages I kind of get quite frequently, also, A.Photoshop CS5 crashes at present sometimes on its own, but Adobe said they were working on an update, which I had now downloaded (still crashed once thereafter).
    Any ideas?
    thanks, HG

Apparently, a hosed CS5 installation. Its manager is crashing causing a windowserver crash. Uninstall it, using the uninstaller that came with it (that's a WAG), download and install the 10.6.4 COMBO update, repair permissions, and restart. If everything else works without crashing, then reinstall CS5. BTW, update your My Settings file, since your current one's showing 10.5.2, which has nothing to do with SL.

the brightness controls in System Settings are as bright as they go. (this same setting is controlled by many keyboards with brightness buttons.) i want it brighter. it used to be brighter. my eyes are straining. again: i have already pushed the system settings as high as they will go, so please don't tell me to try that. already done.
if i run the System Settings / Display / Calibration, i can mess with the callibration and eventually the screen will get brighter. however, that totally screws up all the color, because it isn't calibrated properly.
my conclusion is: 1) the display itself, backlight, is probably fine. 2) i have no idea what to do about this and have been completely unsuccessful finding answers online.
thanks for any advice that might be floating around out there!
