My MacBook wil not shutdown when I click on the shutdown icon I just restart it self

Have you tried holding the power button down for several seconds? I would try the force quit as mentioned earlier first, or go to the Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities and try force quit there.

  • Help Please B/W G3 crashed and will not shut down...

My old back-up B/W G3 crashed and will not shut down. After the crash my wife who was working on it attempted to restart it and all that happens is the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning dial (not multi-colored wheel). This actually happened a few months ago and I've just been using my MacBook instead, but realized there was still some info that we needed to retrieve from the G3.
The only way to shut down is to unplug. I replaced the Lithium 3.6V battery but that didn't help. I tried holding down the apple, command + P, R keys for the 3 chimes and that didn't solve it. I have no clue what else to do. I would love to somehow be able to at least download the info from the hard drive(s), but have no idea if the drives may be corrupted.
Please help with any advice. Many thanks.
    RK

You can also try two other methods of Disk repair, without the Install CD:
    • Boot up while holding down the Shift key at startup. This forces the Mac to check and Repair its Hard Drive as it boots up, and does not load most extensions. This is called Safe Boot or Safe Mode.
    • Boot up Darwin in Single-user mode by Holding down Command and S at startup. When the messages stop scrolling, and it appears to prompt you for input, type:
    fsck -fy
which forces it to check the disk, even if it is journaled.

  • I use uTorrent but it will not shut down when i quit

I use uTorrent but it will not shut down when I quit

Any torrent program will and can destroy your computer.
You are not the first and will not be the last to learn this.
UnInstall and if your machine is capable Repair Permissions and shut your computer clear off, this allows it to reset and then restart your computer.  Be wary of anything you get from a torrent. Movie, Music, game, EVERYTHING.

  • IMac will not shut down or restart using the apple menu

I have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu.  The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer.  This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi...
Before you shut down, make sure you "quit" all open applications. Applications are running if you see the small blue reflection under the app's name in your Dock.
If necessary, you can force quit apps... several ways to do this.  One, from your Apple menu > Force Quit or using the Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities.
If it's not a question of open applications, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • IPad2 is stuck in FT login and will not shut down

My iPad2 is stuck on the FT login prompt and will not allow me to cancel out.  As of now, I cannot shut down or do anything else with the iPad.  Any ideas of what I can try?

Try a reset by pressing and holding both the lock and home buttons together until the apple logo appears.

  • My iPad just randomly stopped having sound and will not shut down only restart.

my iPad just stopped have sound.  Only works with ear-buds.  Also, now when I power it down or even force it, will only restart & will not stay shut off.  I have done the whole mute/lock thing, did a reset & even backed it up & restored it.  Anybody have any suggestions??  thanks!

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

To solve some sound problems, just follow these simple steps
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Tap on General
    3. Tap on Reset
    4. Tap on Reset All Settings

  • Macbook Pro screen is black and will not shut down or boot up right.

Last night my 2007 macbook pro would not go to sleep properly.  When I closed the book the light stayed on and the fan continued running.  Later I shut it down.
This morning the computer turned on but the screen is black.  I tried closing the book but again it would not sleep.  I hold down the power button and it seems to shut down but when I push the power button again the light comes back on and the fan starts up but the screen stays black and there is no powerup sound.
The lights on the battery are lit up.  I tried taking the battery out but same thing.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Try:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Then see if it will boot into Safe Mode. Do not remove the battery unless it's defective.
If none of the above work then you may have a hardware failure so take it in for service.

  • Ipod touch screen is frozen and will not shut down or re-set

I loaded a new game and when I opened the game, my Ipod Touch froze as soon as the game started to boot. The touchscreen is unresponsive and the Ipod will not restart or re-set. It will not register when hooked to Itunes on my computer. Has anyone had this happen, and how can I get it to re-boot.

    Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If still "on", let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try again.

  • TS1382 My replacement iPod Nano is frozen and will not shut down or stop playing.  I cannot operate the touch or slide functions...truly frozen.

I have tried to reset the IiPod, but an unsure of how to properly reset the instrument.

To do a hard reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume down buttons together at the same time long enough for the Apple logo to appear. This may or may not work the first time around, so don't be afraid to try it more than once.
If you are still unable to get any sort of response, you'll need to let the iPod's battery fully drain.  Then charge it back up and see if things are back to normal.

  • AcroRd32.exe will not shut down when shutting down computer.

Windows 7.   Adobe Reader XI Ver. 11.0.06
Get message that AcroRd32.exe is preventing computer from shutting down.
I think this started when the .06 upgrade was installed, but not sure.

    Thanks for the reply Pat,
Looking at the processes, when I open Acrobat reader it opens 2 ArcoRd32.exe *32.   I use Opera Browser and I noticed that it opens 2 ArcoRd32.exe *32 also.   If I close the Acrobat Reader, 2 of the ArcoRd32's drop but 2 stay open, the ones opened with the Opera Browser continue to run.
I did a search on the web and found out that this is an add-on to the browser (Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox and Safari) and it allows you to open PDF files directly in the browser.   It also stated that there can be a problem of ArcoRd32 not closing and it instructs you to go to the Task Manager and end the process, just as you had stated.
At least I know what the problem is now and I can deal with it.
Thanks again for you assistance with this situation.   I have been VERY SATISFIED with your assistance.   You have been very professional and I really appreciate it.
