My photos look worse in iPhoto 6 than in iPhoto 4

In iPhoto 6 on my new MacBook Pro, the quality of images from my Canon PowerShot SD300 is lower than that of the images from the same camera in iPhoto 4 on my iBook G4. When I email photos from the new computer via Apple Mail, they look worse than emailed photos from my old system do--even when I contrast a small 30-40 KB iPhoto 4 image to a 150-900 KB iPhoto 6 image. Is this possible? If it is, then can I change a setting in iPhoto or on my camera, or do something, to rectify the situation?

When I compare the same image, in edit mode, in iPhoto 4 (on my iBook G4) and in iPhoto 6 (on the MacBook Pro), the first distinction to make is that in 6 the color, especially red, is much richer. The same picture in 4 looks washed out. But while the contrast is higher in 6, the 6 image is less sharp than the 4 copy: in 6 everything's a little fuzzier, blurrier, more pixillated; lines are less distinct. It's as if the color is richer in 6 because the dot pattern is more apparent. This is especially evident when I email the pictures.
I should add that I've been comparing pictures at the default settings in 4 and 6. When I increase the sharpness in 6 (which I do not know how to do in 4), the problem seems to lessen---until I email the photo. In an email, the sharper 6 image is grainy and, overall, worse.
Can I do anything else to improve the quality of images in 6? Thanks again.

Photos look different in Photoshop than when viewed with Picture Viewer

I am running Windows XP, using Photoshop CS2, with a Samsung SyncMaster LCD monitor. I have recently noticed that my picures look different when viewing with Picture Viewer than when the same picture is opened in Photoshop. The photoshop version is much lighter while the pic viewer version is darker. I want to make sure of what I'm sending to my online printers. Do I have color setting wrong? My color setting in Photoshop are: sRGB IEC61966-2.1, U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2, Dot Gain 20%, and Dot Gain 20%. And preserved embedded profiles for RGB, CMYK, and Gray. Is the problem with calibrating my monitor, and if so, do you know of any free calibration software? I'm on a budget.

Well, it surely is a problem with your monitor settings, but, forgive me for saying this, mentioning "sending stuff to the printers" and then asking for free calibration software is a bit naive. If Adobe Gamma, the settings in PS itself and the color calibration in Windows don't cut it, then your system is seriously bent in terms of color and some other steps are required first.
a) reset your monitor to its default color temperature and brightness
b) get rid of any color tweaking your graphics card may introduce
With a clean slate, create a color reference image (pure colors, grayscale gradient) with all color calibration turned off and see how it looks at the system level and in PS. Now you can begin to adjust settings everywhere and re-enable color profiles until the results match in sRGB space.
The rest is pretty much unpredictable. Unless you gain access to the exact color profiles of the target device (the printer) and your monitor is properly hardware calibrated, there will always be minute variations. The only thing you can do is to solely rely on your visually aligned sRGB setup and have all color profile adjustments and color space conversions done at your printer. However, even that's assuming you do not wander too far off the default values and the sRGB is indeed "intact".

I know this is probably a question better suited to the Adobe Photoshop forums, but does anyone know a way to make digital photos look more like film than video in FCP? I know about watching for hotspots and such, but is there anything else I can do?

All links in the chain peddle the bicycle: in this case, I would guess your photography may suffer a bit if your colors are blown out. In assuming you have a chance to rephotograph, establish in your menu that your color temperature matches your lighting. Try K6300 for strobe, K6100 for strobe umbrella, K3100 up or down a few for tungsten: make sure your lights are at 45 degree from your photos, reflection of the camera. Your best bet is to WBalance them, and at all the same exposure, as Automatic tends to give you the neutral color and neutral value. Don't trust automatic unless you're in a pinch. You can also set in your menu a "less vivid" level, but I wouldn't trust this either.

Colors look saturated when viewing pictures in iPhoto 6

When looking at photos in iPhoto 6 the colors looks very saturated. For example faces look very red instead of a more natural skin tone. The pictures look different in iPhoto to how they look in other applications (including Preview). In these other applications the photos look as they used to in iPhoto 5 (i.e. much more natural colors).
If I tick the Add ColorSync Profile checkbox in the preferences and then duplicate a picture, then the resulting picture looks just as horrible in other applications (e.g. Preview) as well. It is as if iPhoto has then added this horrible color profile to the photo itself so that all applications then suffer the horrible colors!
Any help / suggestions would be much appreciated.

After some more investigation (with the help of Sam who was having a similar problem in a different thread) we seem to have narrowed down the problem down to ColorSync profiles. If a picture has one its color does not look different in iPhoto and if it doesn't have one, the color is affected.
If I load up an image in Photoshop elements I get different results depending on what settings I choose for the color settings. If I choose no color management then the picture looks the same as Preview (and how it used to look in iPhoto 5). If I choose either of the other settings then the picture looks different - still not the same as iPhoto 6, but more saturated anyway.
I suppose the only workaround is to set a ColorSync profile for all my photos and choose one that I am more happy with. i.e. one that changes the picture the least.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that we (Sam and I) have Photoshop Elements installed. The reason I say this is that the color profile that iPhoto chooses when you tick Add ColorSync Profile in the preferences is Adobe RGB (1998). Pictures imported with this preference enabled, look the horrible color even in Preview. So I assume that it is this profile that iPhoto is applying on the fly to all photos you view if they do not have an explicit profile set. If you look for the Adobe RGB (1998) profile in Spotlight you only find it in an Adobe directory which I assume you wouldn't have if you had not installed Elements.

Colours look better in iphoto than on desktop

I am new to Mac. I'll try to be short.
I used a photo as my desktop background on my macbookpro. However, when I opened the same photo in iphoto, it looks much sharper and the colors are much more vivid than on my desktop background.
I noticed the same thing with all other photos. They look better in iphoto than in Preview for example.
Could someone explain why this is so?

Go to the Monitor section of the System Preferences and see what the color profile the monitor is set to. You can change it to whatever you find via Terence's post and see if it renders more accurately. You can change it to one of several to get what looks best to you.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Problem with slideshow in iPhoto. Photos look like they are all the right way up but when in slideshow action some are sideways.

What version of iPhoto are you using? Are you creating the slideshow directly from an album or are you using the slideshow mode?
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

Unless you have the source files that were on the TC or Windows machine you will have to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.

3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects. Your original library will remain intact for further attempts at fixes is so desired.

Iphoto exporting photo looks pale on iphone

Hi people, I'm trying to export some photos from iphoto and copy them to my new iphone 6. The problem is the exported files look great on my rmbp, but when I copied them to iphone 6, the photos look so pale and dull. I know this is not a problem of my phone because if I use my phone to take the same picture, the color looks good as well. So what did I do wrong? Some color settings? Please help, thanks!

No - iPhoto probbably is not crowded (it workd up to 250,000 photos) and even if it is that has no effect on the screen display

Selecting more than one photo in pictures folder to import to iPhoto

Just started using iPhoto '08 and I want to import most of the photos from my pictures folder.
When I have iPhoto open and click the option to import, and then select my Pictures folder...how do I then select multiple photos to import at one time...instead of having to import one at a time?
Any advice is very much appreciated.

Same as everywhere else in the OS.
Click to select one
Click on one and then shift click on the last one to select a contiguous group.
Click on one and then command-click on others to select non-contiguous items
If you have folders of images you can import by folder.
You can also import by dragging and dropping files and/or folders to the iPhoto Window, the iPhoto Dock icon.
If you drag and drop to the Album section iPhoto will create an album if the same name as the Folder.

Photo library on Time Capsule and want iPhoto to recognise it rather than import to Mac Mini small Hard drive

As heading states, I have 100Gb of photos and want to have them "sorted" and viewable through iPhoto. at the moment when i add photos it is importing them from the TC to my mini's hard drive duplicating the pictures and using up valuable space. Is there a way of pointing iPhoto to the photo folder on TC as you would music and videos for iTunes library?

Yes there is but you shouldn't.
Here's why:
1. Is this a wireless connection? If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
Problems with a Referenced Library
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
Issues?
1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save byte of storage space.
3. If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Frankly the better way to work is to import them to iPhoto and let iPhoto copy the files. Live and work with it for a while and when you're content trash your pre-existing filing system - it's of no use to you any way. If you use iPhoto (or similar apps, like Aperture, Lightroom etc) you access the photos via those apps and not the Finder - the point of using a Photo Manager after all.
If you have a folder tree or pre-existing organisation structure you can recreate it quite quickly in iPhoto. For instance:
If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
