My photosmart 5510 says online but won't print-message says unable to communicate with printer

My  printer says it's connected wirelessly, my computer says the printer is connected, all tests say it's connected wirelessly but when I go to print it says
Unable to communicate with printer -  printer unavailable or not connected.... might need to update IP address
The only way to reconnect it is to turn off router and then back on again, but I have to do this every time I leave the printer for more than a few minutes.
Any help gratefully received before the thing goes through the window!

It sounds like the printer may be having a difficult time communicating on the network since rebooting the router seems to help.
What brand and model is the router?
Do you know if your network uses WEP or WPA security?
What operating system does the computer use?  This will be good to know if any steps need to be performed from the computer.

  • Photosmart 5510 All In One won't print black

One week ago I copied an A4 page and it worked. Last night, I tried to copy something and I realised that the printer has black ink issues. At first I thought that the printhead is dry so I did a printhead clean without any results. Then I thought that the cardrige may be empty, so I filled it, and then I did a printhead clean again. Neither this time. And then I saw that there are other people that have the same problem. The question is: What to do now?
I use the original cardriges that came with the printer and some good ink. It is the first time since Nov 2012 when I have this problem with the printer.

For the Photosmart 5510 the troubleshooting steps in the document here may help.  Especially make sure the vents are cleared.  If that does not resolve the issue then resetting the printer as described in the post here may help.  If this does not resolve the issue then read the entire thread here and try requesting reset instructions.
I am concerned about your comment "good ink".  If you have refilled the cartridge there are various possibilities that could damage the printhead, including air in the supply or printhead, incompatible ink and a host of other issues.

  • Unable to communicate with printer; ad hoc problem: Photosmart 6510

I'm running windows 7 pro and I recently installed the aforementioned printer. Please help. 'HP-setup-73 Photosmart 6510,' the name of the printer, is recognized and able to be connected to in my network wireless connections. Firewalls have been disabled and Installation and network config is already set - at least to my knowledge. But when trying to print something, an error window pops up saying: "Unable to communicate with printer...If you installed this printer by IP address, please update the IP address..." That error message could be irrelavant; Perhaps it's a setting adjustment on the printer side. I don't know, that's why I'm asking.   what should I do to fix this problem?

Print a Wireless Network Test from the front of the printer (probably the Network or Wireless menu).  Does it indicate that your printer is connected to your network?
If so, go to Start > All Programs > Hewlett-Packard > [your printer model] > Update IP address.
If you want a more permanent solution after doing this (so you will not have to do it again), set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

  • HP Photosmart 7525 - Unable to Communicate with Printer

I set up my printer through the driver provided in the packaging. Everything seemed to be going fine until I try printing anything wirelessly from my computer. The printer claims that it is connected to my internet connection and everything has been configured, but when I try to print anything it says Unable to Communicate with Printer. I have searched through countless troubleshooting forums and cannot find a solution that works, please help!

    Hi Star-A-Star,
    Thanks for providing that information.
Since the printer is working on the one computer the printer is on the network.
For the other computer follow these steps:
    Restart the computer and router.
Make sure the computer is connected to the proper network.
Left click the wireless icon on the taskbar, it shows the network name that you are connected to.
Find out what the IP address is for the computer and the printer.
The first 3 sets of numbers have to match for the printer to get connected to the same network.
Go to start, run, (might have to type run in search window) type cmd, type in ipconfig.
    Check the IP address.
Now check the IP address for the printer.
Do the first 3 sets of numbers match?
Try to access the printer's IP address again through Internet Explorer.
Then run the add printer wizard on the computer.
Go to start, devices and printers.
    Open the add printer wizard.
Select local printer and uncheck automatic detect.
    Next.
Select use the following port, select create new port, choose HP standard TCP/IP,
add TCP wizard comes up, next  type in the IP address for the printer and continue the wizard.
Make sure the printer is online.
    Try printing a document.
    Let me know the results.
    Thank You.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8100 unable to communicate with printer, but still prints

    Hello,
I have an Officejet Pro 8100 connected to a Windows XP SP3 computer via USB.
When installing  I downloaded the latest drivers off the HP webiste and followed the instructions for installing the printer and connecting via USB.  While installing I only installed the basic print driver.
The printer appeared to install correctly.
When printing (test page, or from other programs such as Word or Excell), the printer will actually print the requested document, however, an error box will pop up saying "Unable to communicate with printer".  The only option on the error box is the cancel the current print job.
Before cancelling the print job, even though the printer actually printed the document, I can still see the document in the print queue until I click the "Cancel" button on the error box.
I have deleted the printer, uninstalled and reinstalled twice, but the issue persists.
    Any ideas?

    Hi aconway,
I hate to hear you are having issues.  This could be caused by a port issue, bad USB cable/hub/switch connection, or possibly a spooler or driver issue.  Click Here to run the print and scan doctor (select OS, then click the + sign beside utility diagnostic tools, click the download button next to print and scan doctor). If you would like to learn more about your product, Click Here.
    Suggestions:
    1. Run the print and scan doctor to identify any port issues
    2. Connect unit directly to PC with new USB cable that meets specifications(no longer than 4-6ft).
    3. Remove any hubs or switches if being used.
    Hope this helps!

  • My iPad shows my Photosmart 7510 but won't print. Wireless commands from my computer to printer work

My iPad shows my Photosmart 7510 but won't print. I've disconnected and reconnected printer, turned iPad off and on.  My computer communicates well wirelessly with the printer. Troubleshoot further?

I would try a hard reset on the iPad.
To do so, hold both the home button and sleep button down at the same time.
Keep holding them until the device restarts and you see the Apple logo.
Once you see the Apple logo, you can go ahead and release the buttons.
Once the iPad is booted back up, try to print to your 7510 again.
Let know if that helps resolve your issue or not.
    Best of luck,
    Kyle

  • HP Photosmart 5510- Unable to Communicate with Printer Utility Check not working!!!!! HELP

I work with Windows 7 the error message I am getting is Unable to Communicate with Printer. I have never had a problem with a printer. First night worked amazing, All software is downloaded on the computer but then  went to go print to day it didnt work. REBOOTED EVERYTHING, wireless router, computer and printer. Then ReConnected the printer to the router through what the Manuel says. FINALLY starts printing, waited about 30-45mins went to go print again and of course it didnt work.
I have attempted to do the Utility Check- States I am connected online both computer and printer to the router. From what I gather there is an issue with the printer- computer connection. I bought this specific Printer because it was wireless and highly recommended because HP brand, now I am wondering if this was a big mistake.

Ok here is a page in the Cisco website with documentation in regards your Router check in here how to verify what is the current version of router's firmware. if needed you can find the latest version of here as well.
    In how to get to the routers EWS to do this follow this steps;
To reveal Relevant TCP/IP settings include in windows this settings
    •IP address
    •subnet (subnet-mask)
•gateway address (also the router's or AP's IP address, which is useful for opening the router's web page
or Embedded Web Server (EWS) page.
Important communication test! Once you have obtained the gateway address, type this address into your Web browsers URL field to open your router's EWS,  e.g., 192.168.0.1*. * This value will vary by router manufacturer.
Checking TCP/IP settings in most Microsoft operating systems

  • Macbook pro recognizes but won't print with hp desk jet 5550. Help!

macbook pro recognizes but won't print with hp desk jet 5550. Help!

Hi, I used the Mac setup instructions, not the PC ones.  The printer was automatically recognised in print and scan when I connected it with a USB cable.  I accessed the server's web-based page and followed all the instructions, but still no joy.  Thanks for the tip about posting.  I have just posted in the section you suggested, so let's see what happens.  From a quick scan around the apple forums, lost of other people seem to having precisely the same problem (and not just with HP printers!), but unfortunately, no-one seems to be offering a solution!  And trying to get through to the apple online support is a complete waste of time.  They've been 'not available' for two days now.  Christmas/New Year shutdown, I suppose.  Thanks for all your help, though!

  • Printer connected, printer works, but won't print from Mac

I'm helping someone with a printer problem, and I have a mystery on my hands.
The printer is connected (directly), shows up in the printer list, can print a test page, but won't print any document from this computer (it's fine from my laptop).
    It's a Mid-2011 Mini, 2.3Ghz, running 10.7.5. The printer is an Epson WF-2540.
This is a USB printer, connected directly to their Mac.
In "Settings", when you select Print/FAX and print a "Test Page" - Success! This is a process that invokes the Epson Driver directly [and bypasses the MAC print queuing mechanism]
When "Printing" from within any application (firefox, TextEdit, winders...)   The job starts to queue, but errors before engaging the printer.
R & R the Epson Drivers,  Clear the Printer "stuff" on the Mac, Reinstall drivers from the Epson website, Mac wants to update the "newest" Epson Drivers (kinda' funny when I think about it...).
    Still errors.
I attached directly to a USB port on my MacBook Pro.  Download drivers, etc..  Works like a champ!
We have deleted the printer from System Prefs, rebooted, and added it back.
We have even gone into Terminal and...
    sudo bash
    cd /etc/cups/ppd
    ls
    found EPSON_WF_2540_Series.ppd
    cp * /var/tmp/
    ls /var/tmp/*.ppd
    rm /etc/cups/ppd/*
    Still doesn't work.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

Hi, it's not clear... did you Rest the Printing system on the Mac?
    10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8 instructions...
In System Preferences>Fax & Print, Right click or Control+click on the Printers list Sidebar, choose Reset Printing System.
if you hold option and click the "-" tab it resets the printing system.
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.
Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.5.x+++
        1.    To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.5.x, follow these steps:
        2.    Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
        3.    Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
        4.    Control-click on list of printers on the left side of the window, then choose "Reset printing system" from the contextual menu. If you don't see a list of printers, Control-click on the text "Click + to add a printer or fax" and select "Reset printing system..."

As an alternative, if you currently have one or more printers listed, you can Option-click the "-" (Remove printer) button.

  • My computer recignizes my pixma 6000, but won't print, help

i have checked for drivers on the cannon wed site and was told there is no driver for my mac.  the printer is recognized by the computer and is listed as hardware but won't print.  Any suggestions ????

There is nothing you can do if there is no printer driver available.
You can check Gutenprint Supported Printers for a driver if they have one.

  • My canon 5320 has ink but won't print on mac os 10.7.5

my canon 5320 has ink but won't print on mac os 10.7.5

    Hi olschoolmike_1,
To try and resolve the issue, you will want to confirm that the inkjet nozzles are dispensing the ink correctly by printing a nozzle check pattern from the printer.  If the pattern does not print correctly, we recommend performing at least one cleaning and two deep cleanings on the printer to try and get the ink to print..  To print the nozzle check pattern and perform the cleanings, please follow the steps located here.  If you still experience difficulty after performing the cleanings, please call or email us using one of the methods on the Contact Us page for further assistance.

  • HP Photosmart 5520 Unable to communicate with printer

I have had a HP Photosmart 5520 for a few months that I am NEVER able to print wirelessly from Windows 7 PC's after it has been sitting idle for a period of time.
When the printer is first powered on everything works great.   I have two HP Win7 laptops that will both print to it with no issues.   However, if the printer has been powered on for some time and I try to print from either of these PC's, I get the "Unable to Communicate with the Printer"  message below from the printer software running on the PC.
However, the printer appears to be working fine on the network for every other debug test I do while it is in this state.  For example, if I open a command shell on the same PC and ping the pinter IP, it responds just fine.  I also put the known IP address in a browser window and the printer serves up the status page with no issues.  The status page confirms the IP address is correct and says that everything is working fine from a connectivity standpoint (see pics below).  Still, it won't print.
If I simply turn the printer off and then turn it back on, all pending jobs are printed.  Any subsequent jobs that are printed also print w/o issue.  However, if the printer sits idle for a short period of time it is right back in the same state!  Please help, this is very frustrating!!
The behavior is the same if I (1) let my router DHCP server assign an IP address, (2) configure the DCHP server to always provide the same IP address to the printer MAC (which it was doing anyway), or (3) configure the printer to use a static IP address.
I am using a Netgear WNDR3700v2 wireless router firmware v1.0.0.36 (the latest).   Details about the printer, printer firmware version, printer network setup can be found below.

I changed two settings related to WLAN inside my router (see detailed feedback below).   I doubt that they will have an impact,, but will report back with what happens.
The reason I do not think it is related to the connection to the printer is becuase when it is in a state where the PC can't print to the printer, I verify the connection is OK by pointing by browser to the ip of the printer.  It works just fine....
The reason I don't thing there is anything set up wrong on my PC is because when it is in this "bad" state, I can simply power cycle the printer and the jobs stuck in the PC print spool all go through.
    1.  Set a static IP in the printer (see step 6) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).
Previously tried (still configured this way)
    2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the
printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click  Settings Tab/Auto Off.  Or use the Printer
        Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS).
Previously tried (still configured this way)
In the router:  (Refer to your router manual for information)
    3. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1,6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
    Changed this.
    4. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
I don't know what this is.  Is it related to the Wireless throughput? (I have 2.4Ghz bans set "up to 54Mbps", 5Ghz band set to "up to 300Mbps")
     5. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
    Already using this configuration
    6. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security.  Nobody can hack your
system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
    Already using this configuration
     7. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same,
they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    Changed this.
    8. Save all settings.  Power off both, wait 5 mins.  Power on router wait 3 mins.
    9. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.
Windows 7/8/8.1   Is Network Discovery on or off?
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings.
Under Home or Work (current profile) \ Network Discovery.
Select "Turn on network discovery" and save changes.
    Confirmed it was already ON
