My pictures are taking up all my drive space

ok, so i am running out of space on my main hard drive but i have an external 250 gig hard drive. is there any way i can tell iphoto to look on my external hd for my photo library and than move my pictures to that spot?
(second, trickyer question) is there any way i can make it so that the "pictures" or "music" button on the left side of the finder window when cliked looks to my external drive instead of my main drive?
thanks for any enlightenment

1. Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from your Pictures Folder to the external. Then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Then select 'Choose Library' from the resulting menu. Navigate to the new location of the library. From there on that will be the location of the library folder.
When you're sure that all is working well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your internal HD.
2. No. But you can drag any folder to the side bar and it will be put there as a shortcut, and drag any out.

In that process I lost my LR4 catalogs I was able to redownload the program but the catalogs are not there and not all of those pictures are on my external hard drive because same said teen decided they were going to borrow my external hard drive without telling me and "made room" on it. Is there a way to recover my catalogs? Please tell me there is because I was in the middle of working on a session when I had to wipe my drive and I would REALLY like to not have to go back and reshoot it. Any help would be wonderful!

It depends on how you wiped your drive.  Depending on how you did it, only the directory was erased and the data can be found with drive recovery software.  Some are free, although there is a small charge for most of them (~$30).  You can usually download a trial version that shows if it will work and you have to pay to be able to save the found files.  Use Google to search for the software.  Different programs work differently and can find different things.
    Good luck.

  • The videos I purchased on iTunes are taking up all the storage on my IPad. Is there a way to remove them from my iPad to free up some storage, but store them in the cloud to access in the future?

Thx - the videos are on my Ipad - that is the problem - they are taking up all the storage and there is no room for anything else. Is there any place I can store them so that I can access them from time to time, but not have they use up all the space on the IPad? Sounds like the cloud is out...

  • Got a new computer Loaded LR  Copied back up from old computer and placed in LR folder in Pictures Open LR and opened catalog In Library all sub folders and pictures are listed  However all pictures are only Gray no pic

Bought a New computer loaded  -  LR application--  appears to loaded ok.  Copied Backup from old computer Wanted to have pics on new computer   Saved Backup to LR folder in Pictures   When opening Catalog  all sub files and corresponding number of pictures are correct However all pictures are blank with gray color.  Need to understand what I have done wrong.

    Sam,
Sorry, wasn't to clear on my description (and wrong terminology)
The old computer was an OSX machine running iPhoto and I had a library of photos as well as a series of albums associated with that library.
The new computer, also an OSX machine running iPhoto, copied over the library from the old machine using the "migrate" utility. I didn't run it on the first time I ran the machine, but I ran it after I had been using the new machine for a couple of days.
What I can see on the new machine is all the folders in the Photo folder in the User folder have been copied over into the iPhoto folder. All the jpg files appear to be there.
When I open iPhoto on the new machine, it opens right away, and on the left side I can see the albums have all been imported but they are all empty. The library is also empty.
Not sure what I can do to keep my album organization.
I guess I have the option to add to library and just copy all the jpg files into the new machine, but doing this gets everything into the new library, but doesn't import any of the albums.

  • WSUS Server 3.2 wsuscontents folder size is taking away all the disk space(75GB)

    Hi ,
We have Windows server 2008R2 X64. server and we have configured WSUS Server 3.2. The WSUSContents folder is taking away all the disk space and there is no space left . As a result WSUS stopped working.
We used WSUS Server cleanup Wizard, but it is not able to reduce the size of this folder.
Is there anyway we can purge the WSUS database? is there any script to run?
Thanks a ton in advance for the help.

How do I find what taking up all my hardrive space on my mac mini running snow leopard ?

    Hi Gibby,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/download/
And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

  • RAW pictures are half displayed all I am getting is pinkish resolution???

Anyone knows what is the issue here?
OpeningRAW files in Lightroom are displayed(not all of them)that way
most of them are displayed right but at the momemnt I click on them they become distorted this way

I only use  adobe bridge to sort and choose the pics and then Lightroom to enhance them.
The funny thing is I download the pictures from Compact flash directly to portable hard drive...I choose them from there and relocate them onto my computer...
It never did that before..I occasionally get the corrupted pictures on the compact flash but now...looks like they are multiplying once I click on them on Lightroom...

  • The other section on my Mac's disc space is taking up all of my space!

    Hello!
I'm having some major problems with my Mac's other memory (as you can see).
A few weeks ago, that yellow bar used to be pink (indicating Backups). At that point, I got the "Your startup disk is almost full." message, and after making sure all my files were backed up, I executed the sudo tmutil disablelocal command. After a few minutes, I checked back on my disk space, and it looked exactly as it does now (except that I've turned the local backups back on here to try and fix it). So what I think happened is that the delete was interrupted by something and the backups files are still there, but corrupt, so they are no longer viewed by the system as backup files.
Yesterday, I took it to the apple store and the genius I talked to told me to just remove some of my big files. For instance, I had a 20 GB Windows VM on the hard drive. So I followed his advice and bought a 1TB drive, on which I put the VM, along with some big programs and files. After those big files were gone, the yellow "other" bar made some progress (backwards, of course). But even moving the absolute biggest file on the machine (according to DiskInventoryX and OmniDiskSweeper) didn't change the majority of the bar. So that makes me think that there are some files that I don't have permission to see or use that are taking up my space. Here is a screenshot of my OmniDiskSweeper scan (that's it, I checked):
If you do the math (or just look at the title bar of the window) it says that I have 77.2 GB of space used up. Unfortunately, you have to realize that it actually didn't scan everything. The software's being honest: if it can't see a file, it takes up no space (0 bytes). For instance, take my users folder:
My users folder takes up 27 GB. But the admin, guest, and service accounts combined take up 0 bytes. No way. So one of those 0 byte folders must be the culprit. The question is, which one? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
    Mac information:
MacBook Air, 13 Inch, Mid 2012
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
2 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory
    OS X - 10.9.4 (Build 13E28)

ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How can i see which items are taking up the most disk space

I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 with a 20GB hard drive. I'm currently using 15GB. I have tried searching through my hard drive to see which programs are taking up the most space. When I add up the totals of the various folders, etc., it's not 15GB worth. I feel like some items must be nested somehow, making them difficult to find. Is there some way to search your computer by size of items? I know that opening the hard drive and clicking on the size tab will sort things according to size. However, the folders don't show their size unless you click on them individually. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

While viewing a Finder window go to View>Show View Options, put a check in the box for 'Calculate All Sizes'. This is a setting you don't normally want to have turned on as it slows down the refresh when you switch windows, so you might want to remove the check once you identify the disk hogs.
BTW- You can free up a lot of disk space & RAM if you remove any fonts that you & the OS don't really need. You may also have a great deal of space taken up by unnecessary printer drivers, not to mention the plethora of ReadMes & other 'goodies' that get added when you install software.

  • How do i check what's taking up all of my space on the macbook air?

    Hi,
I've only just got the macbook air 2012 with 64gb of space and now it seems that i have run out of space..Apparently i'm using 54gb and i just can't see how thats possible, because i've only download atleast 2 apps and got iphoto and imovie.
Also i haven't got mavericks because i don't think i have enough and i just don't see how i've run out already?? How can i check how much i have left and whats taking up all the space?

    Hi DanZeMan,
Click on the Apple in the upper left-hand corner, then on About This Mac>More Info, then on the top of that window, click on Storage. It will show you a graphic indicating what is taking up your storage:
    Cheers,

  • 6+ minutes takes all hard drive space

If i import 5 minutes of video all is well. If I import 6+ then all the free hard drive space is used and i get an out of memory error. Any suggestions

What version of FCE is this? Most likely your version of QuickTime doesn't work with it. Do a forum search and you'll probably find some solutions.

  • HT1766 I did a restore and now my pictures are taking forever to download. Its been stuck on the same number for 2 days now. What should I do?

I had problems with my internet connection and I had called sprint. I was told I had to erase all contacts and settings. I backed it up on iTunes now when I went to restore, first I didnt get half of my apps back (had to go re-download them) and now It shows downloading 43 of 816 photos whenever I go to camera roll. Its been on the numer 43 for 2 days now ?? What should I do or is there anything I can do!

I would let it finish if it's proceeding.  Then if they still aren't there, try restoring from backup again (by right-clicking on the name of your phone on the left panel of iTunes and selecting Restore from Backup, then choosing your most recent backup to restore from).  Suggest you go to iTunes preferences and on the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".  This will prevent iTunes from automatically syncing when you connect your phone and overwriting the backup you are trying to restore to.

  • Pictures are missing on all Friends

My Apple Watch does not show picture images for any of the contacts listed in the Friends button on the watch. In the Watch app on my iPhone 5s iOS8.3 it does not show pictures for the Friends in my list either. My contacts all have pictures for those listed as favorites but they aren't showing on the Watch or the iPhone Watch app. Is there some way to make them show?

Open the Watch app on your phone, scroll down to Friends, top right corner click EDIT. On the right you can drag a contact to move their position. On the left there is an red minus icon to remove a contact. Adding is easy too once the spot is free it prompts you to put something in there by clicking the "add friend".
I deleted and added the contacts back and hey look at that the pictures show. So deleting all the automatically added ones and adding them back may be the answer.

  • If I delete all the songs I ripped on my computer for iTunes Match (they are eating up my hard drive space)

If I delete the songs on my MacBook Pro that went up to the cloud in my iTunes Match, will I lose them from my iCloud match?

Make and keep a backup of your iTunes library, and only stream from the cloud.
