My pictures folder and iphoto library have disapeared

I recently came to use iphoto and got the message that it could not find the library. I did not create a new library for fear of overrighting something that may actually there. I did look at the iphoto discussions to get some help. As a result, I did search the MAC HD for the iphoto.db, jpg files, and various album names, but found nothing. I did notice however, that the pictures folder has disapearred. I checked out the trash, but nothing was there. I am not the only user of the computer (wife and kids use it as well) so someone may have inadvertantly deleted it. When I did search with I did notice a series of invisible files in the iphoto cashe. I do not know if they may contain any vestiges of my pictures.
Any thoughts suggestions?

The search you did should find the iPhoto Library. The default location for the iPhoto Library is in the Pictures folders.
Are there any other Users on your computer that have their own Users folder?
I guess you don't see the Pictures folder in the sidebar of your finder window either.
That's a bummer!
Have you asked your family about this?
By the way, you can create a new library and it will not overwrite your other library. Just give the new library a different name or save it in a folder other than the Pictures folder.
Get back if you can think of anything else.

I am unable to copy the Pictures folder to an external hard drive. I receive an error message saying there is insuffience disk space to perform this function.
I had a MacBook Air stolen and backed up to an old eMac which has proved useless. I now want to remove all 10 000 photos from the eMac and place them
onto an external drive.

Drag and drop the IPhoto Library file from your Pictures folder onto the new drive. It will copy by default. Before you delete the original, double-click the library in its new location and iPhoto will launch. Doing it this way tells iPhoto to use this library in future. Make sure it works correctly (and that you have a backup elsewhere, of course) before deleting the original.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Download and launch BatChmod. Put the videos into a subfolder and drag that folder containing the video files into the Batchmod window. Make sure you are the owner and have R,W, X access as well as the group. Everyone will have R only.
Check the Change ownership and privileges, Unlock and Apply to enclosed boxes and then click on the Apply button. When done try importing the files again.

Trying to restore photos from external drive and realized TimeMachine had been turned off. Found in Imac backup folder in iPhoto library a modified folder with many of the missing pics. Can I restore these?

I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac. After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore. In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year. To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period! Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos. So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on. These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine. But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified. This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April. Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage? If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?
Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

How are you trying to open the photos?
- from windows explorer? - double licking or right clicking and selecting Open with?
- by loading the editor and go to File -> Open?

How to view images from Pictures Folder using iPhoto?

Right now when I click an image in the Pictures folder, the image is automatically opened using Preview. I want to view images directly from my Pictures folder, and have them open to iPhoto. Is that possible?
I just want to be able to view/sort my photos by Folders rather than by Events, Titles or Photo dates. I can't seem to get them to sort by folders in iPhoto.

Iphoto is a Photo Database designed to allow you to organise and manipulate you photos without recourse to your files.
It's not an image viewer, it can only work with photos that have been imported to the database.
I just want to be able to view/sort my photos by Folders rather than by Events,
An Event is a folder of images with a fancy icon. You can organize your pics in iPhoto anyway you want, using Albums, folders, keywords and so on. It's far more flexible that using folders in the Finder.
You can opt to organise the files yourself, rather than have iPhoto do it for you, but I don't recommend it.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Albums folder in iPhoto Library folder missing

The Albums folder in iPhoto Library folder missing. This means when I try to sync photos to my iPod (video) in iTunes, none of my photo albums show up (though I can seclect a specific folder useing year, month day, etc.). It also mens that I must navagate through the date folders to find photos when trying to attach them to e-mails.
I am running a G5 with the latest version of OSX, iPhoto, iTunes.
How do I recreat this folder?

Hi Heath,
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
Do this for each album.
Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".

I have contacts on my Address Book application for which I would like to set a picture from my iPhoto library.
However, when double-clicking the picture square and select Choose..., I cannot access any pictures from my library. I can't even double click the library to show package content.
I would really dislke having to drag each picture on my desktop and I believe there is a way to easily access the iPhoto library for this. I just couldn't find the solution.

I did it like this: First, you should have assigned names to Faces in iPhoto - these names should match the respective ones you use in addressbook (like John Smith each time, not John Smith in iPhoto and Johnny S. in Addressbook). Then, in Addressbook, double-click the square for the photo as you did, but then do not click on Choose but rather on the small Faces icon on the bottom of the popup window. Addressbook should now provide you with all the "faces" iPhoto has for this name.

Common itunes and iphoto library across many apple devices & users using AExtreme?

Is it possible to maintain a common itunes library and iphoto library shared across multiple users and multiple devices in a home via airport extreme or via airport express and a NAS?

i realized that an itunes library folder is different from an itunes media folder although the later resides in the former. turns out while each user account with apple should have its own library they can point to the same media folder.
right now i have my dad and my itunes library on my mac point to the same media folder inside /Users/Shared and that way we are able to access the same music and movies for our iphones and ipads.
i guess now all we need to do is move this to a network drive and make itunes point there.

I played with aperture @ the store. But i noticed i have to import pictures from the iPhoto library in the Aperture library. So i have the pictures twice on the disk. Isnt it possible to make Aperture use the iPhoto library?

Well, I think it's because they really wanted the ability to do a lot of complex editing without taking up extra room on the HD if they did not need to. In iPhoto all edits are stored directly in am image file whereas in Aperture they let you make a lot more editing choices and saving each one as an image (especially a non-JPG image) would just take up a huge amount of choice.
In the future I think they'll offer an API so other programs can see thumbnails from an Aperture library as well, and also export individual images from it even if they are just versions. At the moment things will just have to be a little more manual with Aperture for a while - though I think you can alleviate that by exporting a project when you are finished editing in Aperture - take the exported set of JPG's that you then store in an iPhoto library and use like you normally would with iPhoto. That would take up more space but the good news is that keywords you assign in Aperture are automatically picked up by iPhoto on import, so you can still search in iPhoto by keyword, and then you can make use of any images in iPhoto in exactly the same way as you normally would.
If you use the new ability of iPhoto to reference files in place you could create an export directory and replace the files there on the fly from Aperture if you re-edited them. You'd have to remove them first as Aperture will not overwrite files on export.
