My placed images are coming in smaller than expected.

I'm working on a book that will be printed and would like to make sure I'm getting all my images correct and at the right resolution.
The images I want to place have a dimension of 1280 x 847 and a ppi of 300. I thought this would work fine.
But when I place the image in InDesign the dimensions are about 307x203. I noticed in document presets that the page info has a PPI of 72, so I'm guessing that's what is causing my images to come in smaller. With the images set at the dimensions and ppi that they are though, how can I get them to actually come in at their full dimensions instead of shrinking down? Or is there no way to do this and I need the original photos to be much larger? Obviously I can't take the 307x203 image and scale it up past 100%, so I need to figure out how to get that 1280x847 image in here.
(I'm working with A4 page size in landscape view, and want these images to be full bleed on some of the pages)

Well I was using pixels to describe what the dimensions of the actual photo is, and I know that at 300 ppi in Indesign, when I place the photo the dimensions are then 307x203 by just looking at width and height in either points or pixels. If I try to scale it larger, obviously the effective ppi is lowered, and I don't want that to happen. (So I don't want to change the resolution to 72 in Photoshop either). It sounds like the only way to get the dimensions I need is to have an even larger image? Is there anything else I can do - I mean why would InDesign do this?

Visited Genius Bar. Solution was System Preferences/Accessibility/Display and move cursor size to Normal. A couple months back I evidently saw the option of making the arrow larger and did so and did not discover the problem in Elements until later. Before I visited Genius Bar I discovered same problem with Photoshop CS6 and Pixelmator. I had also uninstalled then reinstalled Elements and knew it wasn't a bug in the software.

  • Image in Photoshop looks smaller than in a viewer. Please help!!!

When i view an image in PS CC in looks 2 times smaller than in Mac OS Preview or in any other viewer. I tried it on another computer - same thing. (Photoshop CC, 15 inch Macbook Pro with Retina display)
Moreover, while the image looks sharp in photoshop, in viewer it looks like it's been magnified to 200%. So i create an image in photoshop say 300x300 pixels, 72 dpi, save it as jpeg, open in Preview at 100% and it looks twice as big as in photoshop and blury. if i post this image to the website, it looks exacly as in viewer, but not like in photoshop. Don't know what to do. Please help

You do not understand some things.  Any image DPI resolution is meaningless when it comes to displays. Displays are normally run are their native resolution which is not 72DPI.  Retina displays are high resolution displays and many applications user interfaces were designed for display with low dpi resolution like 96DPI.  So their user interfaces will display very small on high resolution displays.  So Apple Mac  OS may have to scale up some application their User interface so the will display the same size as the would on a low resolution display to be useable. It is also possible that the Mac viewer may also scale up things so the look like the would on low resolution displays.  Photoshop would most likely display images on a retina display without scaling things up. So the would smaller and sharper in Photoshop.  It all about resolution.  A pixel has no size till there is a DPI association.  DPI defines pixel size for example 300 dpi with square aspect ratio would mean there are 9000 pixels per square inch each pixel would be 1/300"x1/300"  At 100DPI each square inch contain contain 1000 pixels each would be 1/100x1/100inch an image with 1200x1800pixels would print 4"x6" at 300dpi and would print 12" x 18" at 100DPI the 300dpi image is smaller and sharper then the 100DPI image.
Web pages are normally design to fit on displays.  Displays have a limited number of pixels,  So web pages are design for the mythical standard display.  In the past displays all had low resolution and the number of pixel they had were typically 640x480, 800x600 then 1024x768 all had 4:3 aspect ratios. That changed some displays showed up with 5:4 aspect ratios then in 2001 IBM showed up with LCD  22.2" 9.2 MP 16:10 204dpi and 3860x2400pisels. The marketplace was not ready at that time. Even now the marketplace is not ready.  They are making 10" tablets these days with 2560x1600 pixels with a 300DPI resolution.   Web pages these days need versions for high resolution mobile devices like laptops and tablets as well as for desktops on old  devices. Other solutions are being worked on to dynamically alter web a page on servers and devices for the display the user is currently using.
Bet you still do not know what to do but perhaps you understand what is going on.

If the image is from Photoshop with a clipping path, open it in Photoshop and examine the path. What you describe sounds like something that has a clipping path made from a selection of white space around an inner object, but the selection was not set to inverse before converting to a vector path. Instead of clipping out the white area surrounding the center item, the item was clipped. Just a guess, but have a look.

  • Why is the Log Area size much smaller than the log volume

I have been following up on an Early Watch report that has been generated for our production SCM 5.0 system running liveCache 7.6.02 Build 14.  The alert says "The LOG volumes size in your system is too small. Recommendation: Configure LOG Volumes to at least 2 GB".  There are two interesting things about this.
    1) I have spent the last couple of days reading all the OSS Notes, and MaxDB documentation I could find, and this does not seem to be documented as a recommendation anywhere.  Does this seem like a realistic recommendation without taking into account the level of change actifity?
    2)  There is a single log volume allocated with size 2,097,160 KB.  In production LC10 and DBMGUI report this to be correct size under volume details, but only list the total log area size as 1,706,328 (81% of the volume size).  We have a non-production environment with exactly the same size log volume, but it reports that the log area size is 2,032,008 KB (97% of the volume).  What leads to these different amounts of wasted space, and is there any way of getting the database to start using it?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Thanks for the explaination of the reserved space for the Log Queue pages.  This does explain why there is the difference between the two.  I think we probably have our log segment size too large.  As you can see we do get occasional log queue overflows.  Do you suggest we increase the size of our log IO queue higher, and allocate more log volume space to compensate?

  • Confused... why are my exports smaller than my versions???

I am having a heck of a time figuring this out. My file size (I've not done a thing to the photo since importing it) is 4.29MB. When I export the photo as a version it's 1.81MB. What's going on here?

    Ezra,
I think you may need to step back and get some of the basics of Aperture.  I'd suggest starting with this part of the manual:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=3%26sec tion=1%26tasks=true
So with iPhoto I was able to export the exact same sized photo that was in iPhoto.
iPhoto is different from Aperture in many ways.  iPhoto keeps your master, untouched (obviously at full size), and when it applies each adjustment, it derives another full-size photo which is also stored in the library.  Thus, in your iPhoto library, there are 2 full sized pictures.
Aperture, however, keeps a version. The version is a recipe: applying certain instructions to the master to derive the image you want.  The versions are virtual.  Yes, there are thumbnails and potentially previews, but these are low-res cousins of your master, with adjustments applied.  No where in the Aperture library is there a full-sized photo corresponding to your version.  I.e., there is no analog to "exact same sized photo that was in iPhoto" when discussing Aperture.
If you were to export my originals with the adjustments I've made, for the sake of back-up, what's the best way to go? TIFF?
(Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but I'm trying to address your questions, and they all lead back to the same place...)
There is no such thing as "originals with the adjustments".  Those are versions.  For the sake of backup, I would use a vault.
If you wish to torture yourself for a couple minutes, you can read about the very topic you asked about, posted two days ago: Shouldn't I regularly Export versions (thorough backup).
In direct answer to your question, I have a few.  The first is: since Aperture keeps your masters (if you have chosen to import into the Aperture library) and the instructions to get to any version, backing up your Aperture library is the best way to ensure your versions remain intact.  To go along with that, is to back up your masters as you import them (You can review that in the Import dialog).  However, and I think this is what you were asking, if you want to "bake in" adjustments, I would use TIFF. That's just my opinion.  Should you choose the above torture, you will also find some other opinions.  Of course, if you choose to "bake in" the adjustments, you have degraded your photo.  Any further adjustments you do in the future will not produce as high-quality as if you had your master accompanied with the recipe (version).
Hope this is at least a bit enlightening!

  • The text and image are printing much smaller then what I selected.

I sized the canvas to 8.5 and 11. I layed the pic out and used 24pt type, but when I printed it, it came out tiny and looked like 1pt type.
    What did I do wrong?

On the screen it might be that when using text the image is not zoomed to 100% and hence your text might look like big on screen but small when viewed at 100% of the image. Try viewing your image once at 100% and check if your font size is apporpriate. Else increase the font size and save and view in Photo Viewer or at 100% zoom in Editor and make sure it looks fine.
Also try to print on Adobe PDF prior to actual print out to make sure it works fine.
    Thanks,
    Garry

  • When I export an image from Illustrator, my placed images are distorted

    Hi,
I've rendered an image in Maya, saved it as a .psd, and placed it into Illustrator. In Illustrator, I get very jagged curves and lines on my artboard and when I export to a bitmap (see attached...the first image is before Illustrator, the second is after export from Illustrator). I have saved my Photoshop file to the EXACT size it needs to be, so there's no scaling.
    Please help!

In Firefox, are you viewing your PDF in the built-in PDF viewer? You can check whether it makes any difference to use the Adobe Acrobat plugin. This article has the steps to switch between them: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].

  • How to create a pdf file where big (spread) images are tiled into small ones?

    Hi,
How do I create such (as in subject) file? I read on the net that people compain about such issue sometime occur in their export. I've to confess, I'm no expert in publishing and my friend help with creation of presentation file and I want to emulate this option as a sort of security measure, to discourage people from extracting images from my file.

While I haven't exactly managed to find the answer to my question, I've found a workaround that gives me the look that I want.
Instead of adding the 'parchment' background in Adobe Acrobat, I already add the background (as a Watermark) in the original Word 2010.  Although I think the images still get flattened, they get flattened into the parchment background so it doesn't actually matter.
    Solved now!
