My playlists only appear in itunes when my ipod is connected, and it will not allow me to drag songs into playlists from the music library, can anyone help. Have downloaded newest version of itunes and using windows xp.

I followed the instructions in the help menu on doing this but nothing seems to work, Help anybody ? Have installed the lastest version of itunes and I'm running windows XP. Thanks
Is it possible that you are not seeing the thirteenth song because you did not scroll all the way down within the playlist?

Make sure you enter your new Id in settings/message, settings/facetime. ANy content that you downloaded with the old ID is forever linked to that old ID and if you have apps that were downloaded with the old ID and you want to update them you can only do that with the old ID. You could delete those apps and downlad them again ( and pay for them if they are not free apps)

Have you moved your iTunes library recently? Are you using a different profile?
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownership from an account with administer privileges.
Also in iTunes properties tap the read-only check box until it clears, then click OK. When prompted apply the change to the folder and all files and subfolders.

Using iDVD I've no problem creating a slideshow, but am having problems trying to add three seperate sound files in this case three speeches that I hold in iTunes. I want to be able to access them individually and seperately from the photo slideshow. Can anyone advise if this can be done and if it can, how I go about creating the seperate menu and buttons.
If you'd like to integrate the speeches with the slideshow, I'd do that in iMovie where you'll have more control over the timing. Use chapter markers at the beginning of each speech so the viewer can jump to a particular speech (note that chapter markers advance the viewer to a particular spot -- the viewer keeps watching the rest of the video until the end of everything or until they use the remote's menu button).
If you're just wanting the speeches to be on the DVD so people can listen to the speeches after seeing your slideshow, you could:
- use iDVD or iMovie to make a "slideshow" with just 1 image matching the length of a speech.
- create three submenus and use the speeches as menu music. Here's a (random) video on creating submenus:

If I receive an e-mail with an excel attachment on it or an attachment that has 'dat.' at the4 end of it, the attachment won't open when I try to open it. Most frustrating.
To get Thunderbird to open a dat Text file file using Excel.
Right click on attachment and choose 'Open'
A window opens asking what to use.
select 'Open with'
click on the drop down selection and choose 'Other'.
A small window opens showing a selection.
If Microsoft Excel is not in the list, click on 'Browse' button
a window opens showing your 'Program files'
If your OS is Win8.1 and 64bit version and Office 2010 32bit version, to find Office programs the default path may say:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ This is the 64bit version path for Win8.
It is also the standard directory if using Vista 32bit.
So if your OS is Win8.1 64bit version you need to choose the 32bit path:
C:\'''Program Files (x86)'''\Microsoft Office\
locate and click on 'Microsoft Office'
click on 'Office 12' folder
The number eg: '12' depends on the version: I have 2007
so if you use 2010 then it will be in Office 14 folder - list is below to choose correct folder.
* 9 = Office 2000
* 10 = Office 2002/XP
* 11 = Office 2003
* 12 = Office 2007
* 14 = Office 2010
Now you should see 'Excel.exe' , This is the file you are looking for.
Select 'Excel.exe' and click on 'Open'
If you want Thunderbird to remember this and use it each time to open dat file, select the checkbox 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on.
click on Ok
This will now open a dat file from the attachments in an email using excel.
It will be listed in Tools-Options-Attachments-Incoming tab. -
I am new at posting here also, so pls forgive me in advance. My husband and I have been backing up our Macbook Pros to the same Time Capsule, should we not be doing this? If we should not, what would you recommend? I recently got the message that my drive was almost full and so I started to delete misc items from my downloads folder and I found a bunch of my husbands records that got downloaded to my Macbook, could this be because we both backed up to the TC? 1. All data on the computer is just that, your data.
2. All data on the first external HD is your backup.
3. Only the second external HD is your first safe data redundancy.
Protected data redundancy begins at the second external copy due to:
1. It not being connected. Any drive connected, backup or otherwise, is not to be considered a safe data redundancy.
2. Being the backup failsafe to the first external HD, not to the data on the computer which never should be counted in terms of data protection as "a copy".
3. External drives will invariably fail, and since most people falsely believe their external HD is their "safety", this error of perspective must be countered by yet another external copy of ones data.
Ones vital data must always be considered wholly independent and irrelevant of any data on the computer itself. Failure to look at one data in this matter is a failure which often can and does culminate in data loss. -

Changing the setting as to where to store media will indeed put the media files (but not the rest of the iTunes library files) on the external drive as long as the user also selects to organize the media to the NAS. If you don't do that, iTunes will only store new media there from that time on.
I would not recommend keeping only media on the NAS. As I said, NAS can have issues with iTunes and some of the longest topics I have seen here are how to rebuild a library after for some reason the library file on the Mac computer has lost the link information to the media files stored on a NAS. Some things such as date added, play count, and ratings are only stored in the library file and may be lost if you have to rebuild your library file.
I guess for me the only iTunes reason for having a NAS would be to do direct sharing of the library rather than having to use Home Sharing. Direct sharing of the library intact requires placing all the iTunes files on the NAS. If you're going to do Home Sharing you might as well opt for a a cheaper, more stable, plain external hard drive. -
I was previously able to log into humboldt.edu with the old version of fire fox, I finally upgraded because I was getting pestered with pop up windows saying I had to upgrade so I eventually gave in. Now, I am having to deal with scripts and manually having to block or unblock pages (which by the way is frustrating and I hate it, considering that I have no idea what I am doing) and I still cannot log into the one website that is vital in my life right now. I have Win8 Enterprise x64 and firefox 20.0.1, I have researched the win f9 key combo and cannot find anything that says what this does to allow me to enter text in firefox. It happens a few times a day and I cannot figure out why this resolves the problem.

Cannot enable "open itunes when this ipod is connected" with brand new nano
I just purchased a new 16GB 4G nano, and iTunes will not enable the check box for "open itunes when this ipod is connected". It is not greyed-out, but when I select it (check the box), iTunes un-checks the box upon the next sync.
Why won't iTunes allow me to enable "open itunes when this ipod is connected"? I have tried all combinations of check boxes, but to no avail.

When i login to my mac, it opens iTunes, Skype and AIM. I've tried deleting these from the login items, but they are not on the list. Can anyone help?

Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

This was true only for the Finder. Prior to Lion, no other apps would launch unless they were included in the Login Items for the account. And the OS would not restore windows for other apps.
A very small number of apps (TextWrangler is an example) implemented this capability prior to Lion. They could restore previously opened windows. But that is an application feature, and can be controlled by the application's preferences. Lion implements it at the system level, and users have virtually no control on a per application basis.
