My PM G5 refuses DVD+R DL

Every DVD DL introduiced is immediately ejected by the Superdrive. My PM G5 (bought late 2005) has a Pioneer 117-D.
What can I do ?
Thanks by advance.

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
The Pioneer 117, though mechanically identical to the Pioneer DVR-108, is not capable of burning DL media. Itm has crippled firmware, than can be flashed to support DL if you care to try. Read this article which also contains a link to the firmware and flashing guide.
Disclaimer: Failure to follow flashing proceedures properly will result in a brick, a door stop, or otherwise useless optical drive.

  • Replicator refuses DVD-R

Like the title says, the replicator of one of my clients refuses DVD-R as a master, he prefers DVD+R.
I have never heard this before and was always able to send in DVD-R.
As far as I heard from my client he wanted mass burned DVDs and not pressed DVDs (probably a price issue). Now my concern is with the DVD+R master. I guess if he wants DVD+R as a master he will output DVD+R, and as far as I am aware DVD+R is less compatible with DVD player. So my questions:
    - Does it matter if you replicate from +r or -r
    - Is +r less compatible with players or is -r
    tnx in advance

Being as replicating is such a competitive industry, I beleive it's worth haggling with the replicators over formats submitted.
I don't understand why I should have to go to such antiquated, expensive and long winded measures in the UK of buying up a DLT machine (on e-bay) and tapes (not easy to find), then all the installation problems I will no doubt have, when a replicator is supposed to be a state of the art facility.
I pointedly refused to do business with a replicator who was demanding DLT unless they were willing to take my final project on a Freecom portable USB2 80GB drive. They were quite happy to do so if I was willing to pay an extra £100 ($150) for them to make the DLT copy they needed. I agreed because the money and time involved with me making the DLT just wasn't worth it.
If a replicator won't accept your medium, just go to another replicator who will and give him the price list you were paying at the old place. 9 times out of 10 they will match and even better the other guy's service.

  • G4 mini refuses dvds?

i searched alot before i decided to ask,
but upon many trials and errors on dvd
burning ive really got into a problem.
i know the superdrive is really picky about
what medium itll burn. so i bought 1
of every type of dvd i could find with assurance
that if it wouldnt burn i could return it as faulty.
    so i have a few.
sony dvd-r 16x 4.7 - wont reconize, spits disk out.
maxell dvd-r 8x 4.7 - wont reconize, spits disk out.
    tdk dvd - r 16x 4.7 - wont reconize spits disk out.
maxell dvd + r 16x 4.7 - burn error unreconized, in toast its power calibration error
memorex dvd + r 16x 4.7 - burn error unreconized, same as above
sony dvd+r - when i first got it, these burned great now they wont
    even read.
cds burn great. any flavor is fine.
so im baffled. i havent tried cleaning the head because of all of the
different errors im getting, but i did try the recalibration of holding
the power button down for a few seconds then turning it on after
    it beeps.
so im a few steps away from just erasing the h/d and reinstalling
from scratch with the guide book instructions unless someone
    can help.
    please?

im sorry, it was late when i was writing the help question.
    commercial dvds work fine.
im not sure on the version of toast, but it wasnt the light
    version if that helps.
i tried burning from the disk utility, toast, the desktop, and itunes.
itunes gave me the device not calibrated wording, the others
(unsure of toasts error code) gave me the numbers error
code that pops up often in these discussions.
since i posted i broke down and bought a sony external
dvd burner..mostly because it was on sale and i had spent
most of the money that it costs to buy it on blank media
that i was fortunate enough to return.

  • DVD on Imac not working

My built in DVD player refuses to do anything.  Any advice?

It seems to read CDs, but refuses DVDs.

  • "you have inserted a blank DVD"...but it isn't blank!!

Tried a DVD a few weeks ago and after a while a message came up saying it had encountered an error and could not continue playing. When we tried the disk again we just got the "this is a blank DVD, what would you like me to do" message that comes up when you insert blank DVDs. We tried two other disks - one of them got the message, and one of them didn't and played fine.
It has happened a few times since - in the middle of playing it will encounter an "error" and just keep giving me the blank DVD message.
I tried a cleaning disk and that worked at first, but soon enough it was up to its old tricks again, and now it is even claiming that the cleaning disk is a blank DVD.
CDs have always played fine, even when it previously refused DVDS, but when I put one in to check just now, not all songs were listed and three or four were listed as being 15 hours long.
So is this a problem with the drive rather than with DVD player?
Does it sound dirty or just plain broken?
I've just been reading the "firmwear killed my superdrive" thread, and I did update firmwear around the time the trouble started, though I don't use the DVD player that often and can't remember if it was before or after. Could that have caused this? But if so, surely it would be broken all the time and not able to intermittently read disks?
    Help please!

Try repairing your permissions on your hard drive. Any time you do an update you should repair permissions. This link should help. Mac OS X: Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
You should also reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory). Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?

  • Refuses to play DVDs

My i5 iMac refuses to play or even accept DVDs. Music CDs and applications disks are fine, but whenever I insert a DVD the drive spins and ejects it automatically.
This happens even if I have DVD Player open. Anyone have any idea why its doing this or any suggestions for a fix?

I found a thread in this forum which describes a similar theme:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19747&messageID=72404
Sometimes such error appears because the drive does not support the medium.
Fact is not every medium is supported by the drives and I believe in the user manual you will find an index of compatible CDs or DVDs
Possibly the drive is defective and can not calibrate lens in the right position.
But this notebook is not very old and I can not imagine the drive is defective
    However nothing is impossible.
What you can do is to clean gently the lens and see it this will help.

  • Dual 1.8 Refuses to Burn 16X DVD

Any way to get my Mac to burn 15Xs DVDs? Every time I try to use a 16Xs blank DVD for burning purpose I get a no can do type message. 8Xs DVDs are fine. I know that my Sony DVD burner is limited to *Xs burns but why does it refuse to use 16Xs disks? (8Xs disks are getting hard to find.) It doesn't matter if I use iDVD, Toast Titanium 7.X, or Apple's Disk utility to burn. No luck.

It is going to a 16Xs disk that causes the
    problem
Better start buying up all the 8X you can. I have
    not used any 16X.
I just picked up 100 on sale for about 30 cents a piece. I just wonder if Apple will come up with some firmware to fix this problem. I have an old Panasonic desk top DVD player/burner for recording shows on cable and it handles 16Xs without a problem and I doubt whether it can burn at high speeds. It records and dubs in real time.
8Xs disks ARE becoming VERY HARD to find. The last batch were a manager sale of 50 pack TDKs for $14.95 and we know why they were on sale, don't we (8Xs disks).

  • IDVD6.0.1 refuses to burn DVD onto DVD

I have till today successfully burned dvd's, that play both on PAL and NTSC.
All of a sudden I get a message that I need to put in a blank DVD, recordeable, while I popped several blanks in...
At first I thought it was a faulty DVD, but it refuses on all of my DVD's. I have used the same DVD's for more then six months now, so I know they are OK.
Did I upgrade to 6.01 and harm anything? Are there bugs known for 6.01?
When I try to burn it straight from Toast, it burns, but then has no audio and other data when I put it in the DVD player.
I need an urgent answer as this is for a wedding DVD....

    You're welcome Catherine!
    Just hope it fixes it!
But you won't need the combo upgrade then-just the Delta:

  • Anyone provide accurate info on why after 1 yr, after guarantee period expiry the DVD player on our I mac running Intel core duo processor with OS 10.6.8 refuses to run DVDs? CDs run

Can anyone provide accurate info on why after 1 yr, ( just after guarantee period expiry) the DVD player on our I mac running Intel core duo processor with OS 10.6.8 refuses to run DVDs?
CDs run without problem and until recently the DVD we have (all original no pirated copies) ran; we have used a CD cleaner disc to no avail.

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
I suggest an erase and install and use your backup for any important files you have.
Did you perform a disk check/repair and permissions repair and a PRAM zap before updating? While not required, they are usually necessary to avoid issues.
There are so many reasons for a bad install, that it is impossible to list them all.
Out-of-date software, drivers, etc, haxies, and other software can cause problems.
My three updates were without incident, so it is possible for a perfect update, but unless you supply us with details about your previous system, programs, apps, drivers, etc., it is not possible to figure out what happened.
Again, whenever installing an update to an OS, a clone or other full backup is absolutely necessary, as reading the posts on this board indicate.

  • My late 2009 iMac is starting to refuse to play DVD's.

My late 2009 iMac is starting to refuse to play DVD's. Any ideas? It is still in warranty till Nov 2012. it will accept all DVD's, but some it will not play, justs searches for a bit, then spits out. others it plays ok. There appeasrs to be nothing (Quality of DVD, age of DVD etc), that i can pick on. I expect that a trip into the nearest apple store is needed, but iMacs are a bit large to cart around!

If you are under Warranty, which you appear to be,  and you live in the US within 50 miles of an Apple Store, you can request free onsite Service at your home for desktop Macs through Apple Express.
    Hope this helps

  • DVD Player freezing - Refuses to eject disc

I have a blue G4 400Mhz PowerMac (I think they called them Sawtooth) which keeps playing up when I try to watch DVD's on it.
When I try and play a DVD it will usually play it fine, however should I leave it on pause or at a menu for a certain amount of time the computer will go to sleep. This should be no problem, but when I wake up the machine the DVD Player will crash (can only be closed with Force Quit) and my Mac will refuse to acknowledge that there is a DVD in the drive until I reboot (with the button on the front, click restart from the Apple menu will just cause the beach-ball to spin endlessly)
I never seem to get this problem when using the G5 or iBook so it would seem to be a problem with just the G4.
I recently switched the drive for an old Pioneer I had kicking around as the stock one could no longer read CD's, but the same problems still persist.
Any help would be much appreciated.

"..I recently switched the drive for an old Pioneer I had kicking around as the stock one could no longer read CD's, but the same problems still persist..."
If the issue exists regardless of what optical drive you are using, set ENERGY SAVER to Sleep - NEVER, and uncheck "HDD sleep whenever possible".

  • DVD player refused to recognize commercial DVD

I'm not sure why this happens but my new core2duo refused to read a
fairly new video DVD (Lady Vengeance). It's a region 1 disc. When I
use Front Row and insert the disc, I get a message indicating that "the
format of the disk is not supported," or words to that affect. The disc
does not mount on the desktop. Now, I've already played three or four commercial DVDs on this machine before and never had a problem.
To confuse matters, the disc plays just fine in my old iMac G4 widescreen (with the front tray loader), which is also running 10.4.8.
The DVD is a rental from the local video store. Anyone know what's going
on? Is this an encoding issue or has Apple slipped in some sort of anti-piracy firmware that doesn't like this disc. It's not a bootleg disc.
Since, strictly speaking, this isn't a Front Row issue, and I'm not quite sure where to post my query, I'm going to post in the general Tiger forum as well.

Go to: Apple / System Preferences / CDs & DVDs you
see the five "When you insert a" look at the last one
"When you insert a video DVD." This needs to be set
to "Open DVD Player" use the arrows to select, then
    try that movie again.
That was already checked, and wasn't the problem. Based on some other messages, I decided to repair privileges. The only thing fixed were the privs for iTunes (about which there have been a number of messages on MacFixit). Not sure what the relationship is but that seems to have fixed the problem, which sounds more like a bug.

  • New MacBook refuses to read install DVDs

    I just got a new MacBook 2.2,
But it refuses to read the installation DVDs - it spits them out after some seconds of trying.
It does however, read a CD, and a single Layer DVD.
Does apple not know, that Dual Layer DVDs are still not widely used besides Movie DVDs ?
Message title was edited by: Host

I know, that DL-DVDs are common,
but they are not widely used as OS install media.
I even think, this is the first time a company did it.
DL DVDs are harder to read for the drives then single layer Discs.
Most likely this is a firmware problem (of course this is a guess).
Also, when drives get older, they chance that they will not read DL-DVDs is rising.
    See this thread:

Of course, I will return the Machine.
