My positive experience with FCPX.

In an effort to present the other side of the coin on this forum, that FCPX can work very well, here is my story.
For the last 8 years I've been using Final Cut Express on an older Macs. It worked fine for my various projects, although the incessant rendering would be very frustrating. (I never did find the proper format to prevent it.) When Final Cut Pro X was released, I read about it's shortcomings, so I passed.
Five months ago I was planning to video my nephew's wedding so I looked closely at Final Cut Pro X, but was very daunted by how completely different it was from FCE. A few days later I was in my local Apple Store asking their video expert about the rendering in FCE, basically he said to get FCPX, which not only handles many formats, but renders in the background when needed, and has a lot more features than FCE.
I went home and looked at my first FCPX tutorial online and thought, OK, it looks like I'm going to have to start from scratch to learn it. My MacBook Pro was going on 6 years old, so I also decided to buy a new one that could handle FCPX. I had to stay on Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8 for one vitally important application that was not being upgraded, so I went to the Apple refurb site and found a 17" 2.2Ghz i7 late 2011 that fit the bill (I wanted the ExpressCard slot), marked down from $2600 to $1900, I grabbed it.
I immediately installed 16 GB of RAM, and replaced the internal drive with the one in my old laptop, a fairly new Seagate XT Hybrid 750 GB/16 GB HD/SSD. I then bought FCPX. (After completing one small project, I actually replaced the 750 hybrid with an OWC 960 GB dual platter RAID 0 internal SSD, wow, is it fast. I work my current project there, then when complete, move it to the 750 hybrid or a 3 TB I put in a Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter .)
I have to admit that it took me a couple of days to let go of FCE and get used to the FCPX Events/Projects system, but I got through it. I did look at tutorials, but actually learned far more by exploring the menus, panes and icons, experimenting, trial and error, and reading this forum.
I finished the wedding video (32 minutes long) in about a week (learning as I went). It was shot with one camera, which forced me to do some creative editing by lifting, moving and zooming various pieces (and cutting around a very oblivious professional photographer), which gave me a multi-camera look. I added a title, transitions, adjusted dark scenes, leveled the audio in many places, diminished airplane and wind noise, and dropped in a sound effect of my nephew breaking a glass under foot (which did not actually break at the time).
I shared the wedding video to my AppleTV2, and to DVD (3 copies), and to YouTube, without any overt problems. Yes, each operation had it's learning curve, but I accomplished them all in a rather short time. The first time I uploaded it to YouTube, it took about 8 hours for a 1080 2.8 GB version, but when it was done, the YouTube site had a message that it was too long, I had to register to have longer than 15 minute videos. I then used FCPX to upload a 720 version (the actual original format), 985MB, which took about 2 hours (even with a 1 mbps upload internet service). It looks great via the YouTube app on my AppleTV2.
The only overt problem I have is a crash once in awhile either at launch or very shortly after, but I delete the prefs and continue on. I also installed some free plugins that seemed to cause some crashing, so I removed them, but the next time I opened the wedding project, I had all kinds of warning triangles. Turned out I used some of the plugins and FCPX warned that they were missing. It took a few minutes of searching this forum to learn how to get rid of those effects, I didn't even have to ask anyone.
I just bought two new 1080p AVCHD video cameras and really look forward to using them for a festival on Sunday where I'm playing with a ukulele orchestra (which I also took up a few months ago). I'm going to tackle the multicam operations with that project (something I did in my own way with FCE, even though it did not actually have that function).
My view of many of the posts on this forum is that either they have a system/hardware problem outside of FCPX, or they do not make enough of an effort to learn and understand FCPX. It takes diligence and patience, which in my experience, really does pay off. I used to dread doing tweaks in FCE, now I look forward to it in FCPX.

I'd just like to add my positive-ness with FCPX! I've used it from 10.0.1 and, since 0.3, I have loved it and raved about it when anyone asks. The multicam feature is amazing! I used to use Vegas MS for some casual editing and the biggest annoyance with FCPX at the start was the magnetic timeline but after a day or so I got used to it and now can't imagine using anything else. I've had the odd crash but they are few and far between. I won't say I haven't sworn at it a few times but the fault is usually mine in the end!
I use an upgraded 2012 MacBook Pro with 16GB memory and a Seagate Hybrid XT disc for my more "beefy" projects but I've found my 2011 MacBook Air works great with smaller projects (4GB RAM and 256GB SSD). Interesting article on fcp.co about MBAs and FCPX if anyone is considering purchasing one.
I tend to learn things as I go along; I know what I want to achieve and then work out how to get there, often with the help of the nice people in this forum . With FCPX, once you understand the basic structure it's not too difficult.
It seems one of the common themes is problems with importing AVCHD / MTS files. Since 0.3 I've never had any problems as long as I follow my basic rules -
Format the SD card in the camera just before use (use "low level" if offered for the first format) and shoot your footage. Use the same quality format on that card throughout the shoot.
Remove the card and plug it into the computer's card reader. Do NOT interfere with or modify the files in Finder in any way!
In FCPX create an archive from the card on a separate external disc. (If the card doesn't show up then try another card reader - there can be differences in USB chipset implementations).
Import to the events from the archive. Once done, repeat from 1.

  • Positive experiences with command validate

I killed a load process on Unix and got the error A write to file [data/essbase/app/PPU_FK/Ppu_Fk/ess00001.pag], from address [0x403bf4a8] with handle [19] to offset [1130184704] for [16384] bytes, failed with error [1130614] and system error [nnnnnnnnn] after [27] bytes.I tried to save something and issued the command validate in ESSCMD.Did you make any positive experiences with it? Does repair anything? Does it take long?Regards, Alexandru Draghici

The VALIDATE command does not repair any damage or corruption that may have happened in your database - it is a way to perform an integrity check as part of your load/build process. The length of time it takes will depend on the size of your database.Regards,Jade-------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

  • Any *positive* experiences with iOS 8 on iPad 2?

    Two related questions:
    1. I'm trying to decide whether or not to install iOS 8 on my iPad 2. I've read quite a few posts explaining negative experiences. But has anyone had a positive experience? No challenges with the upgrade? Few to no problems with apps?
    2. I am on my third iPad 2 due to hardware issues. My most-recent iPad 2 is only one month old. Will this make any difference whatsoever as to how it will respond to the upgrade? Or is it just a case of the iPad 2 being out of date hardware-wise? Not up to the task?

I still haven't upgraded from 7.0. However, last night I must not have been thinking properly, and I upgraded my Mac to Yosemite. I'm worried that my iPad and Mac will stop talking. So far, so good, but how long will they continue to support iCloud? (I didn't switch to iCloud Drive because iPad still on 7.0.)
With the 8.1 upgrade, did you note any improvements? Any problems?

  • Positive experiences with Zen Mi

Is there anyone out there that has had a smooth experience getting and using a Zen Micro? I would really like to purchase this player but I'm hesitant considering all of the problems I've read about.

Hi, me too I have an overall positi've experience with my player.
As mentioned in a similar thread some week(s) ago, you have to realise that for most people, there are 2 reasons to come to (or search for) a product forum like this
    (a) pre-sales information
    (b) post-sales in case there is an error (or something they don't understand)
Which means that a lot of people here who have the player, are here because they encountered problems. Other people who have the player, are enjoying themselves elsewhere :-)
I came here because I thought my battery life was not as advertised (and a few other little issues, but then I'm a perfectionist and I like to master my toys). I got quite some good information out of the forum. On the whole, I'm very happy with my player, sound quality, disk space, UI speed and logic, other features.
My battery life is about 6~7 hours real play (including on/off's, volume changes, album changes, ...) and 0hrs 20 minutes non-stop play ("play all tracks", no volume changes, supplied headphone, all 96k WMA)
Some things that may have influenced my experience
I never used the USB cable that was supplied, cause I have the same cable for my digital camera lying around the computer. <EM>[some ppl commented the cable was a problem]</EM></LI>
It's also the only USB device plugged in <EM>[some ppl commented that too many USB devices was problem]</EM></LI>
I followed instructions on installing the software <EM>[some ppl just don't read the manual or on-screen info]</EM></LI>
my pc is a recent desktop ( year) <EM>[maybe some older pc's, or laptops, give more random problems. No pc is identical, almost]</EM></LI>
I'm generally quite informed and careful on using computer and other gadgets. <EM>[I don't try to remove the battery while playing songs and downloading firmware all at the same time... or sth like that]</EM></LI>

  • My Positive experience with iPhoto 6 (so far)

I just purchased iPhoto 6 from my local Apple store and have installed it with no problems. I have played around with the new editing views (full screen and compare) . I have played with creating a calendar, card and book. To my amazement I have had no crashes (trying to find some real wood furniture to knock on ...)
I have 2939 photos with most of them having been edited so the real number of photos is more like 7,000. I am using a iMac G5 20" with 2Gb ram.
I have not noticed a real improvement in speed and actually it is a bit slower when scrolling through the library with the scroll wheel on my mouse. But the new feature that shows the date of the pictures you are viewing is cool. This function only happens when you use the slider on the right of the pictures.
Overall I really like it and the new features such as iWeb look cool and I look forward to using it since I have a .mac account. The ability to make calendars and greeting cards is cool

Sounds good. I have the same set-up and was concerned after reading a number of entries on this discussion group. I have iPhoto 5 at the moment.
    were you upgrading from 5?

  • Crystatlview rouer/repeater--anyone had positive experience with Ipad as repeater?

Have been trying to set up Itek R/R which, from watching a Utube video seems to be the same device as the Crystalview R/R. So far, have not been able to achieve sucess with either Mac or Ipad 1. Goal is to improve WiFi reception when poor in hotels, etc. Because of multiple reports that Ipad has less strong WiFI than Iphone/Mac, etc, had hoped this would work, although realize that repeater is usually set up near fringe of router zone for connection out of that zone. Have ATT Uverse, which is b/g, and have no problems with Ipad or Mac at home. Do note that, while Mac lists about 6 other neighborhood routers to choose from, Ipad lists only my own (?)--which, strangely has a lower score when measured on the Mac than the others?? Can get to the point when the setup indicates the device is configured, but when I accept that, it simply circles back. The device is recognized on both Mac and Ipad with strong reception indicated. Has anyone used this successfully with Ipad?

  • Please post your positive experiences with Leopard, and only positive

In a board of people looking for help, it is important to have balance. When we see hundreds of people complaining about the software, it makes people think that Leopard is one buggy system. I can say happily it is not.
    What works:
    HP Scanjet 3970
    Epson Stylus R220
Firewire hard drives by OWC and Cooldrives
    BBEdit 7.1.4
Filemaker 8.5v2 (as long as web services aren't used, but you can export to HTML)
    Appleworks 6.2.9

    Elgato EyeTV 200
    Time Machine
    iPhoto 6.0.4
iTunes 7.5 and Quicktime 7.3 Pro

All on an iMac Intel Core2Duo purchased December 2006.

*What I would like to mention, is that this is business critical software, and we use about a dozen heavily relational custom databases, for everything from client management, form generation, timekeeping/billing etc. Not only is it heavily Relational and interrelated to other apps, it also relies heavily on both internal (FMPs own) and external (AppleScript and Terminal) scripting, some of it very sophisticated. I was very concerned about portability to the new system, and maintained dual information on existing equipment. We have had ZERO issues, so far.

  • Does anyone has experience with Dynafix repair?

    Hello,
my iPhone broke down, and in Belgium all warranty claims have to go via Mobistar/ Dynafix.
I looked this company up on the internet, and all I got were horror stories about warranty refusal (due to water damage, other impossible to proof defects), iPhones that come back more broken than before, claims to pay 40 euros just to get an unfixed iPhone back,...
To be honest I'm afraid to even send my broken iPhone to them. Apparently Apple doesn't support iPhones in Belgium because I tried an official Service Provider, but they couldn't help me. Have to go to Mobistar -> Dynafix.
So does anyone have positive experiences with repairs in Belgium?
(I do want this iPhone fixed otherwise I'll lose all my progress in imob online
The new iPhone 3Gs looks great, and if the old one gets repaired, I won't hesitate to buy the new one too.
Thanks in advance for any reactions. I'll keep you informed on the progress.

    MrTerryG,
I wish I could tell you of a happy and joyful experience. However, I'm afraid my story won't put your mind at ease.
Since I bought my iPhone last summer, my vibration-function was very loud. I wasn't aware that this was abnormal until I heard a colleague's iPhone vibrating much softer, more than half a year later.
I first tried to bring in my iPhone in a local Apple Store, but they told me I had to bring it in at Mobistar, since I bought it there.
When I took it back, I saw a very thin hairline fracture at the simcard tray. This happened when I had -carefully- removed the simcard to bring in the iPhone.
I brought in my phone at Mobistar, describing the hairline fracture and vibration problem. They sent it to Dynafix.
2 weeks later, I went to the Mobistar Center, and they told me I had 3 choices:
    1. Pay 282€ and get a new iPhone in return
    2. Pay 40€ to get it back unrepaired
    3. Tell them to throw away the phone
They said that the damage wasn't covered by the warranty. After that, they showed me a picture, taken by Dynafix. I couldn't believe my eyes, the hairline fracture wasn't just a hairline fracture anymore, and suddenly there were much more fractures! I don't know what they did with my phone, but it looks awful now.
I sent emails to Dynafix, but their replies were not covering the point (as if they only read half of the mail).
I called and mailed Apple and Mobistar too, and both ends advised me to send letters, because there were much more similar complaints.
So that's what I'm going to do tomorrow.
It's really really sad, because this rules out buying new iPhones from Mobistar, because as long as they have a contract with Dynafix, you have an almost certain chance of being scr*wed by the repair company.
I hope you haven't sent in your iPhone, because my advice is: take detailed pics of your phone first, and have them signed by the salesman in your local store where you are bringing it in.
    Kind regards,
    codus

  • Positive experience using ARD 3 across the Internet

I just wanted to briefly share my ARD experience. I successfully am able to control/maintain my parents Macbook from my Mac Pro across the Internet. I have a 5M/512K down/up cable connection (MA Charter Cable), and they a 6M/384K DSL connection (FL Bellsouth). I setup port forwarding for 3283 and 5900 on both my Netgear router and their DSL router. If I use the greyscale color setting, the screen control is very reasonable. I can even go to 2-bit black/white if I need to. Going to color does make almost unbearable, but greyscale is really fine. Also, I love the ability to send UNIX commands, copy files, pull reports, all in background without disturbing them (aka, wrote an AppleScript to make sure iPhoto opens then hides every day so they pull down the latest pics from my Photocast). This is the real value-add for me over plain VNC.
Plus, I can control my Mac mini in the living room of my own house as well.
Anyway, just wanted to post some positive experience with ARD over the Internet, given lots of folks having difficulty with it.

  • TS3899 1st apple purchase (5c), not a positive experience. Email set up, counter shows 128 emails. Actually have 2. Counter will increase but never goes below 128. What gives?

1st apple purchase ... iphone 5c. So far not a positive experience with anything apple. My email is set up but the numbering starts at 128. If more are downloaded the counter will go up but when things get deleted the counter stays at 128. I actually have 2 emails right now and my phone says 130. What is the deal? How do I fix?

  • My RMA experience with MSI

    Hi all,
I finally got my system together after receiving a replacement board from MSI.
The original board, an msi k7t pro2-a rev 1, was faulty in which the voltage regulator was bad(?).
3 weeks after I sent the defect to MSI, a new MSI k7t pro2 turbo arrived.
I read allot of horror stories when it came to msi being lousy with the technical support, but these guys really came through and always replied
    to my email.
I'll definitely stick with MSI in the future.
    stevensly

I had an equally positive experience with MSI when I recently got a K7T266Pro2-RU replaced. It took about 2 1/2 weeks from mailing my defective board to receiving the replacement and all is fine again.
Thumbs up to MSI for a painless RMA procedure.  )

  • My experience with iPhone 4

    Hey ,
Thought it may be useful for some on my own personal experience with the new iPhone 4.
Bought the iPhone 4 last Friday , was please upon my purchase, excited to upgrade from my iPhone 3G to all the nice new features.
Firstly I was quite pleased with the new sleek design and the feeling of a quality product in the grasp of my hand. I proceeded to turn on the phone and was greeted by a new display with nice clarity and detail. The first thing in my mind to do was to check out the new camera and video capabilities, I was quite impressed... That is until I took a photo with a White background which then revealed orange spots.
As soon as I seen the orange spots on the screen my first reaction was to search the Internet to see what the he'll they were, upon my search I disciscovered it was the bonding agent and that it should disappear within a couple of days. Not being too happy with paying a premium price for a premium product and receiving sub standard quality my intention was to bring the phone back to the apple store for a replacement the following day.
Before I made a return to the apple store I thought I would see what other users were experiencing if anything , as always with new products introduced on the market there could be some teething problems. I wasn't disappointed, I found that there is a major issue with the antena and dropped calls as well as the proximity sensor issue, both of which I had been experincing.
The antena issue was only a concern when I indeed held the phone in my left hand and not the right, however like many I wasn't satisfied that the phone could only be held in a certain way so that it was useable, this disappointed me further and made my mind up that bringing the phone back was the correct decision.
The proximity señor issue might I add was quite frankly irritating as my face would end calls.
Upon my arrival (Sunday) I was met by quite an arrogant sales rep who I explained my issues to, he insisted that he couldn't help and that I would need to make a genius bar appointment to see one of the many highly trained , military style technical wizards. All I wanted was a replacement but no an appointment need to be made and the only slot available was the following Thursday. Now usually my experience with faulty products is bring it back and get it replace there and then, not through appointment, however I appreciated the fact that the phone was in much demand and there wasn't much I could do until my appointment.
On the Thursday I arrived at my appointment at the genius bar and explained my issues to the technical guy who was much more helpful than the previous sales rep. He replaced my iPhone 4 merely for the fact of the proximity sensor and not orange blobs or antena issues. As a result of the replacement the orange blobs and proximity sensor issues have been resolved, however the antena issue still remains.
My situation at the moment is quite confusing, do I bring the phone back and get a full refund in mind of maybe having the phone on a lengthy contract while it actually can't make calls or drops calls if held in a certain way, or do I wait and see if the apple software fix resolves the problems. Idealy the software fix will come within the time frame were I have the ability to bring the phone back for a refund. I think many are in the same :position as myself.
    Posted from my iphone

i am having sort of the same issue. as of now, i already have to send my phone back after one day of usage because i can hardly hear the other person on the other end of the phone. when i make or receive calls, have to turn up the volume to it's highest to hear anything at all. And from what i hear, it sounds like the person is a 100 yards away. my hands don't even touch the outside black line. and i still can hardly hear them. are you having this same issue?

  • Positive experience I wanted to share.

No big deal... just wanted to share my recent customer service request that was actually positive.  I know most folks only post complaints or dislikes about Fios Customer Service, but I actually had a pretty good experience with a recent upgrade.
So I've had the Home Media DVR service since April.  I, just like many others, was very disappointed to learn that it was limited to only working with the QIP2500 SD STBs for streaming recorded shows.  I have 5 TVs, 3 of which are HD-capable, so this meant I could only watch HD on one of my TVs and the others were stuck with SD.  Well, with the recent IMG 1.6 upgrade, I called up Verizon and asked about upgrading the two other HDTVs from SD STBs to HD STBs.  The Customer Service rep was very helpful and processed my order and had two new HD STBs on their way.  I received them the other night, set everything up, and activated everything online without having to call them again.  The whole process took maybe 20 minutes, but everything worked great afterwards.  HD recordings stream just fine from the Home Media DVR to the remote HD STBs, so I'm finally happy!  I was even impressed that both Motorola HD STBs included 10-foot HDMI cables (I only needed one as the other uses Component), so now I have an extra.  They included a return shipping label for my older 2500 SD STBs that I simply shipped back free of charge.  The whole process was very painless and worked as advertised.

Thank you Kathleen.  I'm glad Verizon is listening.

    Thank you again.
Not as wishful as you think nascar.  I have gotten a hold of someone here at Verizon who may be interested in your offer.  Let me know if you would like to be put in contact with him.

  • Motions interaction with FCPX?

    Hi all
I have recently started using FCPX on a MacBook Pro after playing around in iMovie for a bit (new Mac convert) but i never purchased the latest version of Motion with it.
I am wondering, what interaction Motion has with FCPX?  Like do i have to export the timeline/individual clips to Motion to be able to add certain effects to clips in my time line, then import it back to FCPX?  or does the Motion interface appear with in FCPX?
How do others edit using Motion and FCPX?
    I hope that makes sense.
    Thanks
    Amanda

.... In Motion 5, are there additional effects that you can access in FCPX with out having to create them or if you create one how do you access it in FCP?
M5 is by far much more than just a 'bag of tricks'.
It is a tool box to create your very own ones.
And as Tom already mentioned above, you can use it as a stand-alone app to create 'effected clips', or you can access your own made titles, effects, transitions from FCPX.
this excellent tutorial showed me how:

Following this advice, I have my own tab for effects (and titles and transitions), and I have full access to the parameters of that from me created effect. Example:
in the timeline, you see a portrait of one of my soccer players on a second track ... (2nd track, 'cause it's a cut-away)
on lower right, you see the effects-browser, there's a tab SVP (=team's name)
in the browser are two me-made effects, selected is Torschütze (=goal scorer)
on top there are the 'published parameters': Name, Position, statistics - for shure I have to be able to individualize the effect for each scorer...
plus, a 'Transformation' area, to put the shot nice into the little frame, x, y, size - the rotation is automatically done by my effect ...
in result is seen in Preview (I'm using a 2 monitor set, therefor that odd arrangement of windows )
the effect has some alpha/transparency, the blueish stripes in the background are slowly animated ...
My scorer template has the team's colors, the needed infos (=has not the unwanted ones which come with a M5 preset), ... simply 'my look' ...-
done in less than an hour (lots of trial 'n error, first time user...)
