My Power Mac G3 Starts but has a box with a (?) in it

Hello I am new here and wanted to know what you guys think of this because i am not necessarily a mac pro.
When i start my Power Mac G3 All that comes up on my screen is a box with a question mark in it. What i think that means is that i need a new operating system for it but i don't really know that to think because i don't want to mess it up.
Thanks for clearing all of this up

Hi TyboyVisser, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Close, it means it can't find a Driive to boot from..
Couple of things to try...
Hold the Option/alt key down at bootup, does anything show up eventually as a boot choice?
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert your Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
(If perchance you cant Find your Install Disk, at least do the Safe Boot part above).

My mac book pro does not connect but shows an error message with a question mark on the screen.I took it to a retailer that said it was not reconizing the hard drive. He said i needed a new hard drive but it may be something else as well but he was sure a new hard drive would fix it.So putting faith in someone who deals with them i purchased a new hard drive to find it was still not working although he said the computer did know reconize the hard drive and i may have to send it away to get it checked .After already paying 120 pounds for a new hard drive and they wanting another 80.00 pounds to diagnose it i am a little sceptical.
That's why i am interested on anyone's help.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html

  • HT201364 Can I upgrade my 2010 Power Mac G 5 that has OS 10.5.8, going through Snow Leopard and then to OS X Mavericks?

Can I upgrade my current Power Mac G 5 that has OS 10.5.8 from 2010 to the current OS X Mavericks if I first install OS Snow Leopard? My computer has 1.8 Ghz, 3 GB DDR SDRAM, 2 CPU with 512 KB L2 Cache (per CPU) and 500 GB Hard Drive, about half full.

    No. A G5 can't be upgraded past 10.5.8.

  • Power Mac G5 Start-up failure

My Power Mac G5 2.O froze up yesterday and would not re-start since then..I press the start button and the machine powers on but will not progress any further than the Apple Grey screen and progress indicator. The fan/s also begin to race. On re-try the display has gone to a white screen with horizontal lines continuous&intermittent. I've taken the HDD's out and tested them via an external HDD on another machine, and they're intact & working at least. I've tried opening in "Safe" mode, but not possible. Re-set SMU, but no change. Checked RAM and re-set, no change. Managed to get the DVD/CD drive open and tried the System Install Disk, but still no access or re-sets possible. Incidentally, the Power supply unit was replaced in Jan07 after the old one failed & the machine has a UPS Device to protect power supply. I've reached the limit of my capability so am taking it it to Apple Authorised Service Center for further diagnosis/repair. Other threads indicate possible logic board failure or Video card..Understand this was a common issue with G5's along with Power unit failures.. either way if it's the case I reckon it would be expensive esp. as the machine is now out of warranty care. Any comments or suggestions appreciated?

Thanks for your reply. The HDD would spin up from manual start, chime, grey Apple screen with progress indicator then change to light blue screen at which point the HDD would cease activity. The fans would then begin to progressively race for about 5mins, then stop. Since my initial email I've taken the unit into the Apple Dealer and we tried remote access via a plug-in External HDD but it wouldn't work. Likewise the Install disc simply couldn't be prompted to spin up or re-set. We didn't get to try without the HDD unit in-situ, which is a shame.
Both HDD's I had in the machine were taken out, but this was to test the integrity of the data via an extenal unit. Both drives were intact and all data accessible.
That was all that could be done at the Dealer, so I then had to take the machine to an Authorised Apple Repair Centre and await to hear diagnosis from them expected after 3-4days..Meantime thanks for your ideas and suggestions. Seems the G5 has had a higher than average failure from the discussion forum, I just hope it's not a critical one on this occasion. I'll keep you posted.

  • Power Mac G4 starts, gets to gray screen and shuts down

My Power Mac G4 will start up, but after it gets to the gray screen with the Apple and the spinning gear for a minute or so the computer shuts down. I have started the computer while holding down the "C" with the 10.4 OS disc in and used the Disk Utility to run First Aid. First Aid fails stating:

    __*Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.*__
__*The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.*__
__*Error: The underlying task reported failure to exit*__

I have attempted to start computer in safe mode but it just shuts down... no difference.

  • Can I put a dual processor in my power mac g5 which only has one processor right now

Can I put a g5 dual processor into my power mac g5? I have a power mac G5 but it only has one processor so I wanted to upgrade to the G5 dual processor found in the later version power macs. Would I be able to do this? If i could do this would i need another fan or other parts? I was also thinking of putting more ram in and another hard drive. PLEASE HELP

Exactly what to do with ram and video is hard to say without the model details.  You can go to http://www.everymac.com and click on Power Mac G5 and then find the machine you have.  The detailed info on the machine will show how much and what type of ram you can put in (I always use ram from either OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com) and also gives the installed video card info.  OWC would also be a good source to see what video cards are available that will work with that logic board.

  • Power Mac no start, no recognized HD

    Hi, Sorry for my english.
My Power Mac G4 is not starting. There are two HD, If i restart by the first HD, it is not been recognized. If i restart for the second HD its stay processing and nothing happens.
How can i solve this problem?
    Thanks

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. Do they show up there? Please check the S.M.A.R.T status also.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
    Cheers!

  • Power Mac wont start up

    HELP!!!!!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
    Have you-
1- Removed/disconnected all devices, except for keyboard, mouse and monitor?
2- Checked your panic log? You can check the kernel panic log any time that you must force restart your computer, using either the power button, interrupt button, or the Control-Command-power key combination. The kernel panic text is added to the log the next time you restart the computer, assuming that you have not reset PRAM at the same time (the kernel panic text is stored in PRAM until you restart). The file is named "panic.log", and it is located on your startup disk at: /Library/Logs/.
The panic report is also the "script" that is displayed when the "restart your computer" message appears. A copy of the report would help.
3- Tried a "safe boot"? Hold down the "shift" key when starting.

4- After checking the panic log, try resetting the PRAM:

  • I have a mac and my friend has a pc with a web cam, sharing?

how can i connect with my built in camera and his webcam, is it possible? how can it be done?

Those are not only different ports (that are not listed) but different IP as well.
You are not connected to one central Server but linked to as many as connections as you click OK to. (or are unaware of if you don't check).
AS scb says I am less worried really about the issue of security as there has not been a Virus in the wild for OS X. That is not to say it will never happen.
My view on this is that it is a risk I would not take about potentially putting myself in harm's way.
It is about When Will a security problem be it virus or Trojan effect Macs rather than it has never happened so I am safe.

  • I have a Power Mac G4. I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I get an error message stating it doesn't recognize the disc and an error

I have a Power Mac G4 with OX 10.4.11.  I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I've gotten two different sets of messages.  One states that
the disc is not readable and an error code: 0x8002006D.  The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025.
What is going on?  I need to burn discs immediately for a conference next week.

"The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025."
The error (0x80020025) refers to an unsupported drive (not disk).  I've read about relaunching the Finder to correct the problem.  Choose "Force Quit" from the Apple Menu and then choose "Finder." Click "Relaunch" and see if the drive still produces the error.  If there's no change, I'd be tempted to replace the drive.
