My Power Mac G4 will not run software update program

I recently bought a used Power Mac G4. Everything runs fine. It is running Tiger. I try to update the software. I click on the Software Update Program. The little arrow appears under it. But, no windows open up. This happens for several different programs. I also can't run any CD's it looks like a window pops up. But then it closes right away. I need help.

Okay, kevib, try running Disk Utility and repair permissions, maybe click on verify and repair hard drive. I guess you can get on the internet okay- You may want to check Apple for any special G4 firmware updates/patches specifically for your breed of machine. Also, check your connection doctor, I don't mean to sound like an annoying person, but Software update needs to connect to the Internet to download software, so no internet, no updating. Failing that, you may have to go to Apple's support section and download the software updates yourself. Just click on them, save them as whatever, make sure they appear on your desktop, and then run them. Failing that, if you have the original software dvd's, you may need to reinstall the system software. restart your machine, hold down the C key on the keyboard, when prompted, put the dvd into the drive, and boot up from that. there should be an option there to run disk utility, and then reinstall system software without erasing your hard drive. As for your CD's, I dunno, It could be the former problem, or something else. See if you can find a copy of Tech Tool which may help you. the trial version is free, afaik...
good luck

Please help - when I insert a software disc into my mac it will not run, how do I get it to.
    Thanks

Then as Kenichi Watanabe has already advised...
The software disc should appear on the Desktop (or in the sidebar of a Finder window).
Double-click the disc icon (or select it in the sidebar).
On the disc, there should is often an Installer, or the application itself.

    Great clue Lukas...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Same thing happened to my G5 dual (late 2004 model). Just did a quick search to find out "power supply unit failure" is most likely the cause.

Please take a screenshot of the following:

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. • While upgrading my 3,2 8 core power Mac , it will not boot. Going from 10.8.3 to 10.8.4. There is no visible video after chime.  I need to get up and running ASAP.  Could the video drivers have not loaded. Please help and thank you. Ps. Main drive ssd.

The Mac will not boot to a cd, Mac or disk warrior.
It will run for  10 minutes with no video, then shut itself down.

Update on this issue. I replaced the video card with an old one that I had and it boots fine.
Question, if a driver were missing from the update process, would I see anything on the screen at all. I had pure black as if no signal was carried to the monitor. I'm trying to rule out hardware failure, as this card is 1.5 years old.

I have tried everything.. taking the drive out. adding a new formatted drive to install to.. no joy..just does not even look to be installing nothing..not even a spinning wheel thingy . if the disk was too early eg before late 2005 would it act like that and not install?

  • Power Mac G4 will not Recognize any Internal Hard Drives

My G4 was working fine and I wanted to install a driver for a 'Twin Turbo Mac Video Card' I had in a PCI slot but it required OS9 running. At the time, I had two internal drives 230 and 120 G running 10.4.11 but no OS9. However, I did have an external Firewire Drive with OS9 and OSX. I set my "Startup Disk" preference to boot from FW drive and selected OS9 then shut down my G4. When I powered back on I got the standard "gong" but on my display I saw a "Mac Folder and a Question Mark". I believe that means the system can't find a drive. Is that correct? I reverted back to my original configuration with the internal drives and the FW drive disconnected and I still see the "Folder and Question Mark". I inserted the Tiger DVD, held down the "C" key and it still will not boot from the DVD either. I once again tried connecting a FireWire External drive with OS 10.4.11 installed and the internal drives disconnected and still no bootup. I swapped out Memory, replaced the Motherboard and the battery and even tried resetting the PRAM. Still that stupid Question Mark is showing!! This has really got me puzzled. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

Depressing/holding the Option key at startup activates the Startup Manager (not open firmware). The resulting window shows all of the available startup volumes (hard drives, CD, DVD, etc).

  • Power Mac G5 will not boot up.

I have a 2005 Power Mac G5 Duo 2.5 Gigahertz computer which will not boot up. When I turn it on, the power light does not light up, nor does it show a flashing light signal. Soon after the fans start up they become loud. I tried reseting the smu, installed new memory, zaped the PRAM, and gave it some time. Those things helped me before, But not now. PLEASE HELP ME!

  • Power Mac G4 will not start up

Friends I have a Power Mac G4 MDD Dual 1Ghz/ 10.5.8 /2 GB Ram.  For the past several months the only way for me to start the Mac was to un plug the power cord, then plug it back in. Computer behaved fine in every aspect.   At times the Mac would shut down instead of going to sleep or shut down after several days of sleep.  However the last several days it would not start up at all. I  press the button on the MAC, fan would start and light would glow for about a second, then die.  I read on the net to un plug everything, remove the battery, press the reset button inside the mac, hold in for 5 seconds, then press the start button for 5 seconds.  Let it alone for 1/2 hour....  Unit still did not respond.  So, I repeated  the procedure and let it alone overnight.  It started with no problems the next morning!! It would even restart.... no problems. It would even start up after shut down, ( I now know it must be  within minutes). Thinking I had fixed the problem I shut down the computer again.  Returned that night.. would not restart.  Repeated the above procedure and this morning it started back up......  Could it be the power supply?  It's currently asleep but wakes up... no problem.  Computer works... except if I shut down for any length of time....  What could be wrong?  Can I do any other procedure while it's alive and running?  Any test I could perform?  Can power supplies act like this?   Any suggestions? Why does it start up after the above procedure?
Thanks in advance for your time...........
    Mike

    Some things to try.
    * Reset the PMU http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939
    * Resetting the Logic Board - Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
    Note:
This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to

  • Power mac g5 will not start

please help me !power mac g5 a1047 will not start!

A1047 refered to all PowerMac G5 towers, as this page explains.  What you need is the EMC#.    That will tell you if you have a liquid cooling G5 tower, and if you do, that's another reason many fail to start because the coolent can leak.

  • Power Mac G5 will not power on

    Ok a little background:
Bought this (June 2004, dual 2.0 ghz) from a friend. Was fully working at the time. I took apart the computer to clean all the parts, it was quite dusty after 4 years of service. Now when I put everything back together, it won't power up!
I was quite extensive in my disassembly (I took out logic board, PSU, HD cage, all fans), and made sure everything was back in order. I am quite experienced at working with computers, so I am not inclined to say it was my fault that I probably statically discharged any components or damaged it when disassembling (I have built and serviced many computers before).
I am guessing it is the PRAM battery that is at fault? I have read a dead battery will cause the machine to not power up at all, and it is after all a 4 year old computer, so battery life was probably reached, so could it be just a wierd coincidence that after I cleaned it out it failed to start? PSU doesn't seem to be broken because there are two clicks whenever I plug it in.
One thing I did notice was that when I took out the battery and plugged it in, the power LED blinks once quickly, but when I put the battery back in and plug it in, the power LED doesn't blink. That is the only indicator that there is some life in the system (are there other diagnostic LEDs in the logic board I am not aware of?). Resetting the PMU does not fix anything, nor is leaving the battery out for an extended amount of time.
    Any ideas Mac Gurus?
    Thanks!

RAM stores certain system and device settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. Exactly which settings are stored in the computer's PRAM varies depending on the type of computer as well as the types of devices and drives connected to the computer. Parameter RAM is a small area of non-volatile RAM (NVRAM).
Some information stored in PRAM includes:
Display and video settings such as refresh rate, screen resolution, number of colors
    Startup volume choice
    Speaker volume
Recent kernel panic information, if any
    DVD region setting
If you battery is bad this info is not available and your Mac will not start up>

  • Power mac g5 will not reboot with Startup discs. Has had hard drives replaced with PC ones

I have an old G5 power mac tower. The hard dives were removed and replaced with PCs ones before I was given it. I do not know if they were formatted. I have the original boot up disc and I want to start again with this tower. The tower turns on but does not recognise the keyboard (which I know works) so I am unable to boot from the CD to have a fresh tower.
    Any ideas

If the drive(s) is bad, it can prevent boot.
Try removing the drives and then try and boot to the install disc (hold C).
Of course, install isn't possible without a hard drive, but this is a test.
