My Power Mac G5 hangs when my Ethernet internet connetion is active

I'm having a very weird problem with my computer. When the Ethernet connection to my router is active the computer hang in very basic operations. for example like going back to the log in window, switching from one user to another and connecting to my share files in my windows base computer.Like i said it only happen when the Ethernet cable is connected to my router or Cable Modem and the internet connection is active. I know this because when the computer is not responding I have unplugged the cable off the router and the computer respond right away. The computer was working fine until I decided to move it from one part of the room to another and had to disconnect all the cables. I using a Linksys wireless-b broadband router for the network.
This is the Setting for the connection:
location = automatic
using DHCP
I got personal file sharing, window sharing and printer sharing on.
Please somebody help me this is very annoying
Thanks

Click on the icon on the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and then open the folder Library inside, followed by Preferences and then rename the ByHost folder inside. If the issue persists, open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
sudo mv /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/ByHost_old/
This command will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear on the screen while you are typing it. Files in the ByHost folders contain your computer's MAC address as part of the name, and are only consulted if your computer's MAC address matches the string in the name.

  • Power Mac g5 hangs on boot up when hot

My Power Mac G5 hangs on boot up when hot, such as after I have been using it a while. It won't get through the boot up process and I have a blank (dark) screen- no picture. Sometimes the little Mac chime sound doesn't even complete, and it quits abruptly 1/2 way through the sound.
Once the machine cools it does start... at least so far.
    Any thoughts?

Any Extra Ram, Extra Peripherals, Aftermarket Video Card?
Will it boot with a CD?
When was the last time you checked the RAM in "About this Mac?"
Can you monitor internal temps thru software ?
Possible bad ram, bad power supply, bad video card.
Try removing an extra add-on components and see if that helps.
Also, I've found startup freezes can corrupt HD start-up files badly.
Just had similar issue in my single processor, ancient 1.6 Gig G-5.
Bad Radeon Card. Put the original back in and it works fine.
Google "G-5 Power Supplies" and check out the information....known issue.
    Good Luck

  • Power Mac G5, freezes when trying to install operating system

    Hello,
I have a PowerMac G5 that I think that the hard drive is bad. It is a SATA 160 GB Drive. I got a new drive and tried to install the Operating System (10.3 black CD) and it won't boot just flashing question mark.
I have a Grey DVD (Power Mac G5) and when I try to boot it gets to the apple screen then freezes with lines across the screen.
I have an apple hardware test V2.5 and it ran the quick test and said hard drive was loaded. I ran it before and the old drive did not even appear.

  • Power mac G4 hangs at startup with gray screen

    Hello all,
I have a Power mac G4 - mirrored drive door model.  512mb of RAM; 833mghz - about 50+ gigabytes of storage remaining.
I recently starting using this mac again, here is what happened:
Power mac G4 was running 10.2.1 - had never been updated; it also was capable of running classic os9 (even though I never used it)
Started using machine again a few weeks ago; let "software update" install 10.2.8 update - everything worked fine
Put computer into target disk mode to transfer files to my new macbook pro (13") - using firewire connection
While trying to connect (migration assistant) - window froze will calculating the amount of space that the "user" on the power mac totalled - power mac appeared to be frozen
Did a hard reset / power down of the power mac G4
Upon restart, power mac G4 goes through all start up functions up to gray screen with apple logo (with spinning wheel) and then goes to a darker gray screen (without the logo) and spinning wheel
Dark gray screen with spinning wheel hangs indefinitely - I've let it stay there for hours on end hoping it will resolve but it doesn't
Here's what I have done so far:
Placed power mac G4 into target disk mode again in conjunction with macbook pro
I can see all the files on the power mac G4 (and have already copied them to the macbook pro) - so I don't think the hard drive is damaged
Disconnected all non-apple peripheral devices - only had a card installed in the back - but took that out - issue persisted (did not replace card in back)
Removed one non-apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Replaced non-apple RAM stick and removed apple RAM stick - issue persisted
    Reset PRAM
    Started computer in single-user mode
used fsck and tried to have system check/fix issue; no matter how many times I re-run the command to repair it never comes back with a message saying no issues found - instead it keeps returning with a message saying that the issue was repaired "system modified"
    Started computer in verbose mode
startup seems to hang when this appears:
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: (ipc/send) invalid destination"
    "LayState: cannot map display interlocks."
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection"
    "Cannot connect to server"
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorInvalidConnection"
    "Connection called with invalid connection"
    Tried re-installing with system discs
The only discs I received with the power mac G4 when I purchased are orange and say "SSW version 8.6" on it" ("iMac Software Restore" and "iMac Software Install")
Computer does not respond when holding down "C" key at startup with either disc in the drive
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as ONLY the internal HD - not either of the CDs I mentioned above; I wonder if it no longer recognizes the original CDs because I updated to 10.2.8 from 10.2.1 before the issue?
    I also have an install disc for OS X 10.4.7 - for a friend's iMac (G5)
When holding down "C" key at startup with the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive AND the internal HD
When I choose the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When I choose the internal HD the startup hangs at the gray screen I mentioned above
At this point, I don't know what else to do.  I believe the computer is still good because I can see everything on it when I put it into target disk mode; it just refuses to make it through the startup/login process.  I have read discussion threads that suggest re-installing the OS using another computer - but I don't know how to do that.  I also wondered if there was a way to tell the computer to re-install the software using the original CDs - but from the command line (in single-user mode)?
    Someone - PLEASE HELP!

Sorry, SU Single User Mode, OF Open Firmware as these 2 where mentioned before.
As a test, let's try disconnecting the HD & see if it booys to any mode without it attached.
It could be the User's files or login messed up, if you want to try something a little more desperate...
Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...
    http://theappleblog.com/2008/06/22/reset-os-x-password-without-an-os-x-cd/
It'll boot like a newly setup Mac, but all your stuff should still be there once filling out the stuff.
Except you could just use Target mode and move or rename that file.

  • Connect Power Mac G4 to iMac via ethernet

I have a G4 Power Mac running OS 9.2.2 with 400MHZ, a whopping 40GB hard drive, with 320MB RAM. As well as an 27" iMAC running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with the 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, and 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. The iMac is connected to the internet via a Netgear N600 WNDR3400v2 router.
I'm hoping I can connect the two MACs through my router in order to transfer some files from the Power Mac to the iMac, and am looking for step-by-step instructions to do so, if this is possible.

    BeavisORButthead wrote:
The OS 9 File Sharing - Apple Support document link you offered was what I was looking for, step-by-step instructions, however it did not work. I was interested in the "How to create a small network" link within that document, but it did not link to those instructions. Perhaps the link is nit supported anymore.
I have both my G4 and my iMac linked into my Netgear N600. The Netgear router LAN settings are setup so that the router can be used as a DHCP server.
When I select "connect to server" from the Go menu on the iMac and type in the computer name or owner name it fails to connect. When I browse to find a server, the only thing that shows up is a numeric name that connects me to my printer(?) because it contains a folder named "canon_memory"
When I select "chooser" from the apple menu of the G4 and select AppleShare, nothing shows up in the "Select a file Server" window. I then click on "Server IP Address" button and type in the IP address of my iMac, I get a reply that reads "No response from the server. Please try again"
Can you tell if I am missing any steps?
I'm afraid I don't have any OS 9 & 10.7 systems that I can test on. I think it was tricky to get Apple file sharing to work on OS 9 at least via TCP/IP. Apple do not support OS 9 now, so I do wonder if the 10.7 AFP server will work well with it.
You may want to try the following for the connection server IP address
    afp://[your-serrvers-ip-address]
    or
    afp://[your-servers-ip-address]:548
    or just
    [your-serrvers-ip-address]:548
Obviously you should check that file sharing works on another system to be sure that 10.7 is sharing correctly. I would also consider using a USB stick, firewire drive or Target disk mode until you can get it working.

  • Power Mac G4 hangs on start-up

I just got this Power Mac a few days and knew it had problems. But I wanted to see what was wrong with it. Firstly it is a G4 400mhz. With 512mb of ram and 80gb maid drive. dvd-rom and an extra hard drive for storage.
The problem is/was that before I could get into the desktop and do stuff. Now it doesn't get that far. I was trying to update it but it would quit the update and then get really weird. The desktop would restart and the icons would appear with no names under them and any menu that dropped down would have no names on them either.
I don't have restore disks for it. But if that all I need for it to be operational again I'll get some from Apple. Or is there any reason to believe its a hardware issue?
    Thanks.

It may be either software of hardware. We don't know enough to be able to determine that. You will first need to get the software installed. I suggest completely reformatting the HDD, then installing the OS. The computer will support Tiger, although it originally shipped with either OS 8.6 or OS 9 depending on whether s is PCI Graphics, AGP Graphics or Gigaabit Ethernet. Getting the software from Apple is probably not the best route. I suggest trying to get either Panther or Tiger. You most likely source is eBay.

  • Mac G5 hangs when attempting to print

More specifically the following actions cause the Mac to hang, while showing the busy wheel.
Attempting to print from any app
Opening the Print and Fax pane from System Prefs window
Opening the Print and Fax pane from /System/Library/PreferencePanes/
I cannot switch applications nor force quit, so a hard reset is the only way to get the computer going again. It's is a Mac G5 running 10.5.5 (2Gb RAM) which prints via network using both Appletalk and Windows protocols.
    Actions taken so far:
    Permissions repair
Disk verification (I thought it might have been bad blocks)
Created fresh user profile (to see if it was a profile issue)
As I mainly deal with Windows PCs, I don't know where to go next. I have looked at similar threads here but my case seems to be more severe. If you want me to paste logs please give me specific instructions on where to find them as I don't know my way around Mac OS very well.
    Cheers

I was looking for a way to reset the printing system via the CUPS web browser (http://127.0.0.1:631) but was not able to locate anything here.
    So you should try an application called Print Therapy 6.x, available from;
    http://www.fixamac.net/software/pt6/index.php
This is the latest version of the brilliant Printer Setup Repair utility, which was a must-have for resolving Tiger printer issues.

We have two Power Mac G5s in our office--one tower connects just fine to the wireless connection with its antenna device.
The other does not connect, and in the System Preferences under "Network," it reads that the "AirPort is currently off."
How can I turn this back on?  The external antenna device is functioning and works just fine on the other working G5 tower.
    Thank you!!

  • Power Mac Won't Start Sometimes

I am running a power mac G4, lately when I try to start the computer, I push the power button on my display and the light comes on and the fan starts but nothing else, no chime or screen, I have reset the pmu/smu and checked the internal battery, it tested at 3.68 volts. I notice if the computer doesn't start, I turn it off by holding the power button in, then if I open and close the cover, the next time it starts. Help me please.

    Texas Mac Man wrote:
It still could be the battery. You need to test the voltage while installed or under some type of load.
Definitely.  Best way to test the battery (Apple Service Source method) is with battery in holder, computer off, AC disconnected.  Test battery voltage and replace if lower than 3.3 volts.
Have mentioned before that I have an 11-year-old Tadiran that still measures 3.69 volts open-circuit but drops to 0.28 volts with a 150 ohm load across it.

  • Upgrading graphics card in Gigabit Power Mac G4, which should I choose?

    Hey guys and gals.
I've been looking to upgrade my Power Mac G4 dual 500 Gigabit ethernet. I'm kind of on a budget so I'm really just looking for something that will help out basic performance, I don't do any gaming. Right now I have the stock ATI Rage 128 Pro with 16mb vram, and it's not cutting it, it's really holding my G4 back. I've been looking at the ATI radeon 7000 with 64mb vram (AGP not PCI), and the Nvidia Geforce2 MX with 32mb vram which is also AGP. I've heard some bad things about the 7000 and that it's a weak card, but it does have more vram, and i'm not looking to play any games or do anything graphics intensive. I usually just surf the internet, listen to music, ichat, and all that jazz. If anyone out there has any experience with either of these cards, knows anything about them, or has any suggestions at all I would appreciate it. Thanks guys.

Hi, My Mac Mini 2006 early core Duo
hangs when i try to connect wirlessly to
    ZyXEL VMG B Series.
I am using fresh install Mac OS 10.6.3 with
    2Gb of RAM.

    Hey there cutyscar,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to your router either by Wi-Fi, or ethernet. I would recommend trying the troubleshooting outlined in this article named:
Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN Internet connection
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1317
Start with this step, and work your way down as needed:
Check all cables and power supplies
Make sure all the cables related to the modem are plugged in and firmly inserted. This includes the modem's power cord, the cable from the modem to the computer, and the cable from the modem to the outlet. To be sure a connector is properly inserted, disconnect and reconnect it. Check to see if the cables have been cut, chewed, or otherwise damaged.
If you have any hubs or routers, check their cables and power supplies. If you have more than one power supply available for a type of hub or router, try swapping the power supplies. A defective power supply may affect network traffic.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling
