My Power Supply Blew Up Is My Board or Hard Drive Damaged?

Bought myself a Geforce 4 4200 Ti on Saturday ) , installed it, loaded the drivers etc.. and everything was perfect.
I then ran 3dMark 2002SE 5 times on a loop, I left my machine running, then it just switched off.
I tried the power button, the reset button etc.. nothing worked, I then pulled out the power cord and put it back in, I was then presented with a blue flash   a bang, and lovely smell of smouldering ;( .
I rushed out to buy a new case and got the system up and running after formatting the hard drive, the system now takes much longer to load considering it was a clean Install, and gets slugish at times - so I reakon some damage has been done, but I'm not sure if its the HD or the Mobo.
Is there anyway of knowing/any software to test if the board has been damaged. I've ran all of the Maxtor tests and the hard drive passed, but the performance issue seems to be linked with the HD.
Also what would cause my p/s to blow in the 1st place, it was a 350w and less than a year old.

I remember a similar problem to this, when the 1st ATA133 boards came out I built a new machine can't remember which board, all I can remember is that the HD ran like a donkey until I installed the 4in1 IDE drivers. And thats very similar to the problem I'm having now, before I could copy+load a program+double click a directory and the system would cope, now it just chugs along, this is why I'm focusing on the HD. It would be nice to get to the bottom of it though as both are a similar price to replace should I need to.
I am currently running the new Hyperion drivers and was doing so before, with no problems, so i think they can be ruled out.
Only other thing is I've flashed my BIOS to the latest version, so I could have a config issue, anyone know the best configs to use for my 7200rpm ATA133 drive?
Also as I asked before is there any software that can test the board for damage?
Many thanks and your help is very much appreciated.

Obvious power issue effecting all back plane jks. Popping HOURLY (clocked) thru speakers, lites up lamp on doc scanner. Has blown power supply once. "Genius" diag NTF twice B4 power supply blew. Still have same trouble. I made very CLEAR to Genius Bar that it was a hardware issue after they continued to trouble shoot software. I was referred to tier 2 who told me they only worked on SOFTWARE. Does anyone know a more qualified shop who can fix an OBVIOUS mother board issue tracing back to the power supply? I had the same issue with a 20" with 7 visits & had to literally take a video of the trouble before they could figure out the trouble was the video card. From reading the sheer number of posts of the same trouble descriptions going back to 2007, it's all too obvious the path to MSFT is being taken.

  • CS3 in MAC OSX7 gives licensing stopped working following replacement of logic board and hard drive.

Repair of MacBookPro with OSX7 replaced logic board and hard drive.  CS3 notified that licensing has stopped working.  It worked before the repair -- and I believe that I had a similar problem in the past.  The Live Chat said that they were not compatible -- which doesn't make sense since it worked fine before the repair.  How can I get it going again.  Chat room said I had to buy new product which seems crazy.

  • Power supply from CAN hardware PCI board

I am using a PCI-CAN/2 board to construct a network among some equipments. I need know how to get the power supply ( 5v ) from the two ports of that board to a circuit which contains a PCA82c250 can controller from phillips. I have already tried switch the board's jumpers to internal power mode and external power mode but no voltage was appeared. How can I do this ????

Yes, this can be quite confusing. The internally/externally powered option refers to how the transceiver of the NI-CAN board is powered. When internal, the transceiver gets its power from the computer. When external, the transceiver gets its power from the V+ line of the CAN bus. Changing to external power will NOT bring any power to the V+ line.
If a CAN bus requires power, try adding a power supply that can produce the recommended voltage. In such a case it is best to either set the NI-CAN board to externally powered or do not connect the V+ line to the board.

  • Logic Board and Hard drive

I have a 20" 1.25GHZ G4 iMac that had a hard drive failure. It could be seen by Disk Warrior, Drive Genius but wouldn't respond to repairs. After taking it out I was able to confirm that it's bad.
I installed a new drive but that can't be seen by install discs(original and 10.5) or DW and DG. I replaced the cable to the logic board and confirmed continuity on the power wire to the drive. (And the DVD drive runs so it has power). I tried jumper settings of "cable Select" and "master". I confirmed off line that the new drive is good. New board battery. Reset PMU.
Does it make any sense that the problem is the logic board? Everything else seems okay - display, DVD drive, etc. What confuses me about the logic board is that it worked enough to see the bad drive. Anything else to check/change?

Depending on the brand of replacement hard disk drive,
and the requirements with whichever one you have to
work in the iMac G4 configuration, the jumper pin setting
may be the issue. There could also be an issue with an
ATA controller on the logicboard; or other hardware...
Given the possibility of issues in this, some users have
opted to stay away from some brands of drives which
had presented a problem if used as replacement drives
in these computers. Some leave a lasting impression.
{One example, is WD drives. They may be fine, but I
    don't prefer to use them in Macs ... from SCSI days!}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Power Mac G4 MDD data recovery ftom corrupted hard drive

After my previous post on 4/7, my mac started new symptoms. When I press the power button, the mac starts up with the familiar chime showing the Apple Logo. The daisy spins and spins for a long time, and then the screen goes black and it sounds the chime again and repeats the same thing. It seems the hard drive can't be found. I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive hoping this will solve the problem.
Regretably I don't have a backup copy of recent photos. Is there anyway I can recover data from this diseased hard drive? Can commercial disk repair softwares normaly do this? Has anyone successfully recovered data this way? Any suggestion? Please let me know.

Your hard drive may have hardware and/or electronic problems or it may have a corrupted directory. Can you hear it spinning? If it has a malfunctioning component, software solutions won't be able to repair it. Professional data recovery is an option for dead hard drives, but it's very expensive. If the drive has a badly corrupted directory, a utility like Alsoft's "DiskWarrior" would be worth a try. Prosoft's utility "DataRescue" may also be worth checking out.

  • My power mac doesn't recognize my external firewire Hard Drives anymore

I was working with my Power mac as usual, it freeze, after rebooting, any of my firewire hard Drives apears

    Hola Alfredo:

  • Logic Board or Hard Drive Issue?

Recently my PowerBook G4 failed to boot from the internal hard drive. Gray Apple screen, spinning wheel and after a couple of minutes restart is all I get. What happened initially was the computer froze not allowing Safari to quit for restart. I had to manually shut down after all other means did not work (Force Quit, etc.). I have been able to get it to boot from an external Firewire drive running 10.4, but it will not recognize a USB drive, though the USB ports work for a printer and scanner. I was also able to get it to boot from a 10.5 Install DVD that came with my wife's MacBook. Since I bought this PowerBook used, it had no disks included, but did have 10.5 installed. The other thing is the lower RAM slot has not worked from the day I got it. When I run Disk Utility the drive checks out, though there were some Permission repairs. SMART checks verified. I seem to be able to access the internal disk when booted from the external. Reset PMU & PRAM, no difference. Should I try replacing the hard drive or do I have another issue here?

First up, PowerPC-based Macs can't boot up from a USB external drive (per se... there is a workaround and "hack"). Only Intel-based Macs can do that.
Second, since you say it works and boots up when connected to a FireWire external drive, I believe it is a hard drive issue. S.M.A.R.T. status is not ("not") always a reliable indicator from what I've heard. It may say it's verified, but really it's failing. By the same token, it may say failed, but really it's fine.
That is not always the case however. 95% of the time, S.M.A.R.T. status is highly accurate.
If you are so inclined, you can open up your PowerBook, take out the hard drive, and place a new one in there and see what happens. If it works, you're in business. And you only spent a $100 or less on a new drive (which you might end up needing anyway if your current drive is indeed broken).
(If your drive isn't broken, then you have a backup drive ).
If the new drive installed doesn't work, then it is a logic board issue or something else. But since you say it works fine and boots up from a Leopard install DVD, I think it may just be the hard drive. And a new logic board usually starts at $300 so think about that as well. (You could get a new used one for a bit more and sell that one for parts).

  • Logic board failure, hard drive failure, soon to be heart failure

Up until a few weeks ago, I owned an iBook that ran like a champ. Suddenly, I got funky lines on the screen, and the cursor froze. I had no idea what it was, so I discovered after two seconds of research online that my logic board had failed. I actually didn't know that they had been recalled, so it never got fixed. With a dead computer, my wife and I decided that it'd be more economical to just buy a new MacBook than it would be to have Apple repair the logic board.
In the meantime, I had to boot up the iBook twice to get some info out of it, and I read online that you could put some pressure on the left wrist rest to possibly make the logic board "work" temporarily. The second time I did this, I heard a crunch, but was still able to use the iBook. I am now under the impression that what I heard was the beginning of the end for that drive.
We received our new MacBook not quite two weeks ago. I finally got around to buying a firewire cable yesterday so that I could attempt to transfer my files. I attempted to boot up in target mode, and I got nothin'. I tried to boot up the iBook, and I got the flashing question mark/folder icon.
I stopped in at the local Genius Bar, and the tech told me to just remove the hard drive out of the iBook and put it in a case. Removing the hard drive was straightforward thanks to the many online how-to manuals I found, and I then installed it into an enclosure.
When I plug in the now external hard drive to the USB port, the enclosure lights up, but it doesn't recognize the external drive. The hard drive does not sound like it is spinning, either.
Short of data recovery, I don't know what to do now. I have 4 gigs of pictures that I absolutely can not replace, and it will literally break me if I lose them.
I could really use some guidance and direction on this issue. Three weeks ago, I had no problem whatsoever, and now I have an iBook in pieces on my dining room table and a hard drive that no longer works. If I had just had the logic board fixed, this wouldn't be an issue now.
Thanks in advance, I truly appreciate the help.

Hey Rick and welcome to Apple Discussions,
I got funky lines on the screen, and the cursor froze.
Right the Graphics Processor Unit ball grid array failed and the computer froze since the GUI runs thu there. Shim repair or reball (permanent).

Right Rhonda posted a picture of the exact placement of the GPU here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1368645&tstart=0
Down on the bottom (if you can't see it try Safari, I can't see it in FireFox).
I think that putting pressure from the top is a problem since the hard drive is exactly above that chip. So maybe the bottom should come off before anyone tries this.
Of course that doesn't help you now. So the drive was spinning up but now it's not. Pull that drive out and take a very good look at it.
Look across the top - dented? mmm that's bad might not be recoverable.
    OK go on.
Carefully examine the multi pin socket - look OK? No? go to removing the board.
    move on
Carefully examine the circuit board underneath the drive. Good?
    Bad - cracked? chipped?
It might be possible to repair it but you'll have to find the exact model of this drive. It would have to be working and you would swap the circuit boards. Post the exact model and make of the drive and I'll see if I have any examples here.
I just pulled the board off a Toshiba and it just plugs right in.
I got this off the web where guys have fixed their drives this way. They were IDE drives but I think this would work.
If you can get it to spin up use Data Rescue II.
Post back. Really good pictures would help.

  • Power Mac G5 2.7Ghz. Only one hard drive, other bay is empty. Can I clone that drive by putting the new empty HDD in the empty bay and use Disc Utility. Have Tiger 10.4.11 and at the moment no internet on that machine. Thanks

Greetings. Power Mac G5 2.7GHz.  (Yes, water cooled, but no leaks ...yet!) Tiger 10.4.11  Only one hard drive, the other bay is empty. Can I clone that drive by putting the new empty hard drive in the lower empty bay and use Disc Utility. Currently I do not have this computer on the internet, I assumed it would not matter. (Of course, I am writing this question from a different computer.)

  • Power Mac G4 will not Recognize any Internal Hard Drives

My G4 was working fine and I wanted to install a driver for a 'Twin Turbo Mac Video Card' I had in a PCI slot but it required OS9 running. At the time, I had two internal drives 230 and 120 G running 10.4.11 but no OS9. However, I did have an external Firewire Drive with OS9 and OSX. I set my "Startup Disk" preference to boot from FW drive and selected OS9 then shut down my G4. When I powered back on I got the standard "gong" but on my display I saw a "Mac Folder and a Question Mark". I believe that means the system can't find a drive. Is that correct? I reverted back to my original configuration with the internal drives and the FW drive disconnected and I still see the "Folder and Question Mark". I inserted the Tiger DVD, held down the "C" key and it still will not boot from the DVD either. I once again tried connecting a FireWire External drive with OS 10.4.11 installed and the internal drives disconnected and still no bootup. I swapped out Memory, replaced the Motherboard and the battery and even tried resetting the PRAM. Still that stupid Question Mark is showing!! This has really got me puzzled. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

Depressing/holding the Option key at startup activates the Startup Manager (not open firmware). The resulting window shows all of the available startup volumes (hard drives, CD, DVD, etc).

  • Help! my power supply

I have the Imac Early 2006 17inch? and For  the last 2 years of ALL my photos have been stored on my Iphoto program. I turned on my Imac one day and it turned right back off 3 seconds later. it repeatadly did this over and over again so I brought it to the apple store at the Tacoma mall. I had one of the technitians look at it and he said that it was most likely the power supply that went out in the computer. and since i technicly have a "vintage" computer since its a 2005, apple does not make that part anymore. or if they do it might be really hard to find. I really cannot accept that EVERY picture of my wedding is lost, and EVERY picture from the first 6 months of my beautiful daughters life os gone! my baby girl is almost 7 months old, and i took thousands and thousands of pictures, i love photography..... someone please please help me find this part, or a place that could supply it, or something that could get me back my pictures!!!!!!

The good news is that a bad power supply, in general, does not effect the hard drive. So your photos should be safe. I would contact the Apple Store and see what they would charge to retrieve what ever files you wanted from the hard drive.
I would not put any money into "repairing" the power supply.
