My Powerbook 1.67 w/ Tiger slow...

So recently, my powerbook seems to be running very slowly...takes more time for websites to load, etc. Now, when I drag the mouse to the dock, it takes a long time for it to pop up (if it does at all).
I wonder if my system is bogging down, is there any way to optimize performance?

HI Spider,
One of the first things I ask when someone posts that their Mac is slowing down is how much hard drive space do you have available??? Open any Finder window. At the bottom of that window you will see available hard drive space.
If you have less then 15% available, it's time to do some maintenance. Move files to an external drive, CD/DVD... any available back up.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. DU is located in Applications/Utilities.
And, grab your system restore disk or your Tiger disk and Verify the disk for errors. Shut down your PBook. Push the power buttton, hold down the C key, and insert the restore disk all at the same time. Let go of the C key when the Apple logo loads. An Installer window will open, Quit the Installer, instead click Utilites from the Menu then click Disk Utility. When DU opens, select MacintoshHD in the panel of the left. Make sure the First Aid tab is highlighted. Now, click the Verify button. If DU reports errors, click Repair.
If DU can't repair the drive, try DiskWarrior available here: www.alsoft.com.
Get Onyx. It's a free system clean up disk and it's here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
Download and install, do Maintenace and Cleaning.
I hope this helps....

  • Powerbook G3 (Pismo) & OSX Tiger

    Hi
I have a 500mhz G3 Pismo. I've upgraded the HardDrive to 60Gig 7200rpm and the RAM is 640mb. I'm running OSX 3.9 but I stopped updating there because I was worried that Tiger might be a paw (sorry-step) too far for this computer?
Can anyone inform me as to whether installing the latest version of Tiger might cause problems or slow my powerbook down as compared to OSX 3.9 ?
    Many thanks
    Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Yah, love my Pismo too~ Just sharing the Dashboard issue I see on the iMac G5 at work. When I go to Dashboard, it always goes like this: screen dims and widgets move in from the edge of the screen but freeze halfway for 2 seconds or so. Don't know how it's like on a Pismo G4. I'm not upgrading to Tiger because a certain language input method is missing in it. So I don't have first-hand experience on the speed of Dashboard on Pismo. Maybe it's just that the iMac I use at work is slow with Dashboard. I've heard that Pismo's start-up speed is the fastest of all Apple laptops, even compared with MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.16 GHz (first-hand experience by 2 guys at the other forum). I guess different configuration causes this. Hope Barry is getting along with his new Tiger~

  • PowerBook G4 15" Titanium very slow. I want to resurrect it for basic functionality. Is rebooting from original start up discs (which I have) a good plan? And if so, what's the procedure?

My PowerBook G4 15" Titanium runs very slow. I want to resurrect it's basic functionality. I am the second respectful owner. Is rebooting from the original Mac OS discs (which I have) a good plan? And if so, what's the procedure? I'm not concerned at this point with security vis-a-vis what will be left on the hard drive, but only with re-optimizing the little beauty for core tasks. Thanks!

As a respectful lover of PPC macs, still having a fully functional one, a 2004 12-in PB, let me ask first some details: RAM installed, disk size. I assume it is running 10.2, as described.
RAM is crucial for upgrading the system, 256 MB is absolute minimum for Tiger, best 512 or, ideally, 1 GB. There were 4 generations of tibooks, beginning with Jan. 2001 through Oct. 2003, which one is yours? The CPU is also important, as the last series may also run Leopard, not only Tiger.
    As a basic thought:
    - if the first tiBook, with 1 GB memory, you will beautifully run Tiger, Leo may not run due to low CPU
    - with the last, with 1 GB memory, you may run both Tiger and Leo, for which 867 Mhz is the minimum.
Of course the original CDs are good, if 10.2, you must be having the last generation, which is of course faster than the earlier ones, so may also install Leopard. I would make a fresh, erase-and-install procedure, and see what is that slowness you mention. Jaguar should run OK on that model, and fast enough, but do the last update too, i.e. 10.2.8

  • Does the PowerBook run better on Tiger or Leopard?

I have been running my PowerBook on Leopard. I've been noticing it getting slower doing Internet, iWeb, iWork and other programs. I'm wondering if I should switch it to Tiger. Or is there a double boot I can run so I can run both Tiger and Leopard?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Depends.. I have the last model PowerBook G4 1.67 W/ the hi-res display. It has DDR2 memory and one modification I just completed was added a PATA Legacy SSD drive and this thing flies!! Bear this in mind that the only reason I have a PowerBook G4 is because I have no use for an intel laptop, as I have a 2010 mac pro 6-core and a Gateway P-6860fx + a G4 Pismo(well, upgraded G3).
I was just in the Apple store tonight and took a look at the new macbook pros. My only hope is that Thunderbolt will be a PCIe drop in for current and past mac pros(2010.2009.2008).
I am typing this on a G4 PowerBook as we speak
If you have 150.00, get a 120GB or smaller SSD - You will be glad you did,. Leopard runs very well on this laptop. Again, I can't speak for your laptop, but for the last models of the G4 powerbooks - mine runs Leopard very nicely!
And yes, through HTML5 and quicktime codecs, I can play HD 720 and barely 1080p on this and thats without flash! HTML5 is breathing new life into the PowerPC.
I love both platforms.. I am not an intel fanboi.

  • Tiger slower internet than Panther

I've just updated to Tiger from Panther. Web pages are now loading very slow. I know that there have been some other posts about this, but after sorting through them, I am more confused than ever. Are there no solutions?
    Thanks!
    G5 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi g, Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That's good news! It means the issue is limited to your user account, not systemwide.
Log back into your normal user account:
Here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder.
    1. Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    • Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    • Navigate to YourHome/Library.
    • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
    • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
    • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
    • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
    4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

  • Does Leopard Installation over Tiger = slower comp? also, audio Question

I need a laptop for college this fall. and im up in the air between Macbook and the HP DV2500t
Sadly, it looks like if i go with Mac, ill have to shell out another 130 just 2 months into having the computer, which leads to my main question.
Will installing OSX10.5 on a Macbook that (HOPEFULLY) has a spankin new Santa Rosa chip make the comp any slower in the long run?
is there anything I can do to avoid the slowdown? or will it run like new?
    ALSO!
As i new musician who records ideas nightly, I use an external mic with a 1/4 to 1/8 converter so i can put it into the Mic Jac in the back of my PC...
I saw that Macbook only has a headphone and Line in jac. Can i plug my enternal mic on?
    THANKS!

i dont follow with the pre amp... the volume might
    not be up to par?
some microphone only transmit weak signal that need to be amplified by a pre-amp, but if your mike produced strong signal, then you don't need a pre-amp.
also... whats the deal with 'it runs on a white
macbook'.. what does the color have to do with the
    OS...
is it in qestion whether or not Leopard will run
    right?
Because the demo shows it run on white macbook, that is mean that today macbook will run 10.5.x, either black or white.
Also, just as Mac users... why would apple hold back
from Santa Rosa... HP had them in all new laptops in
    the 2nd week of may...
That is their decision and we are not allowed to discuss it here based on the user term and agreement that we must agreed before posting any thread.
    Good Luck.

  • Tiger slow? Check DNS entries

I had an issue with Tiger being very sluggish - lingering seemingly forever before completing that blue bar in the address field and opening the desired page.
It was finally discovered that the origin of the problem had nothing to do with Tiger, but with my sysadmin's primary DNS server at the time having it's own pains.
By merely changing the order of DNS servers the problem disappeared completely.
(see system preferences->network and select built-in-ethernet, then TCP/IP to access DNS server entries.)
Hoping this will be helpful to someone - WGO

  • Powerbook painfully slow performance

Recently my powerbook has been running unusably slow. Here's a timeline:
    - Noticed slow opening of applications, saving, switching from application to application, browsing folders through finder.
    - Computer kept freezing after 1-10 minutes of use.
    - Checked RAM in system profiler - 1GB RAM showing 512 MB.
    - Removed RAM and restarted (new RAM being sent to me at present).
    - Freezing problem stopped. Slow performance improved for 2-5 minutes after startup but after 10 minutes, back to same old slow usage.
    - Checked hard drive, repaired permissions, did macjanitor cleanup.
    - Hardware check from startup DVD showed no problems. SMART check OK'd hard drive.
    - Archive and re-install tiger and updated to 10.4.9.
    - Activity monitor shows %CPU usage as fairly normal. Kernel_task is using about 720MB of virtual memory under very light/no user usage.
    - Created a new user and performance normal in new user, leading me to believe that the problem is related to user library and possibly preferences.
    - Put preferences folder on desktop and started putting my preferences back into user library folder bit by bit, restarting and testing. The performance would be better each time but hard to test as I have to wait at least 10 mins to test each time - time consuming business.
Is there any way to narrow down which preference file is causing the problem without painstakingly re-adding preference files one by one to the user library folder, waiting 10 mins and testing?
Otherwise, could the diagnosis above be due to something else all together. Been through the discussions and can't get anything to work so far. The RAM was the cause of the freezing problem, but seems to have brought on the slowness problem.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks Graeme.

    Graeme:
If you have not done so recently run Unix Maintenance (CRON cleaning). Download and install MacJanitor and run all tests.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Tuning Mac OS X Performance has some hints you may find helpful.
Regualar maintenance also helps performance. Take a look at the following articles:

  • Does Final Cut Express makes a Powerbook slower?

I just got Final Cut Express HD. As soon as I install it, I felt that my Powerbook G4 was getting so slow, I rebooted but still the same. Is there anything that I need to activated or deactivated?
I have 25Gigs free, my PowerBook is a 1.35Mhz and 782MB in Ram. Before the installation my PowerBook was a jet! now it is a slower turtle. It doesn't make sense.
    Please a little help,
    Eyu Jrita

I can't say I've noticed it. But it could actually be slowing down your system. Check your console messages; you'll notice:
"The function CGDrawBitmap is obsolete and will be removed in a Tiger update. Unfortunately, this app [FCE], or a library it uses, is using this obsolete function, and is therby contributing to an overall degradation of system performance."
I've searched around this issue and can't find out that much about it. i.e. whether it really is slowing things down.
Otherwise you specs are better than mine and I've not noticed a slow down. Do you have a lot of other apps open?

  • Help: A very slow Powerbook

All of a sudden my PowerBook G4 has become very slow. I get lots of beachballs while it is thinking what to do. It takes 5 minutes to restart and sometimes 5-10 seconds just to open a folder (with a beachball while I wait). All apps are running slow. I have a 60 GB Hard drive with 6.5 GB free space. I just run repair permissions (nothing needed to be repaired) and I veriified the drive with HD utility and it said it is OK. I am getting ready to through this computer out the window. I cleaned my drive, I ran Onyx, Clean Sweep, Apple Hardware Test (how good is this, anyway? it said the memory and the drive were fine), Disk Utility repair permissions, repair disk and everybody said the computer is fine, but remained slow, slow, slow. I ordered DiskWarrior update about 1 week ago, but it has not even shipped out. I reinstalled (with achieve) my OSX 10.4 (did not bother to update to 10.4.10). It takes the computer 5 minutes to startup (time to get me to login window) and another 5 minutes to load my desktop (I only have the drive image and 3 files there). Takes 3 minutes to shutdown. Just trying to open a folder gives me a beachball and 5-10 seconds to open. Beachballs, beachballs, beachballs all the time. I guess my last resort is to completely reformat my disk. Does anybody have any final suggestions, before this goes out to the dump?

  • Slow wireless with Powerbook, but fine with iBook?!

I'm currently using a campus wireless net and my Powerbook G4 is really, really, slow but my newer iBook G4 is much faster. When plugged in with an ethernet cable, however, both are equally fast. Does anyone have any idea why this could be so, and how I could go about fixing it? I unfortunately have no details on the wireless net.
    Cheers,

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   also iBook G4 10.4.6

    Do the
recpetion levels match? if they don't you will find
that the lower the reception the slower the speed.
Most wireless software, including the Airport
software, steps down the connection speed based on
the reception levels to ensure the stability of the
    signal.
Thanks. That was exactly the problem. My Powerbook has worse reception than the iBook. Is this a know problem?

  • Slow GUI after Leopard installation

    Hi!
I have a 17-inch Macbook Pro with 2,4ghz CPU, 2GB ram and hi-res monitor. Everything was very quick and reponsive in Tiger, but after doing an archive & install of Leopard (with settings kept) the GUI is very slow. Dashboard, the dock, minimizing windows (genie effect) is very sluggish (looks like it is not 3d accelerated) although the computer is not working with anything (according to Activity monitor/top). I have no third party software running and I tried doing a fresh install with the problem still there. Exposé seems to be running like it should do, but Dashboard, Dock and minimizing things are affected. It is very obvious while holding down shift key at the same time as minimizing a window with genie effect - it is anything but smooth! Looks much better on a PowerBook G4 667mhz with Tiger.
I also get less FPS in games like Quake III or Urban Terror. On Tiger it was around 90 FPS all the time, now it is around 50.
Are there updated graphics drivers on the way or any other solution to the problem?
    Thanks
    Jacob

Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • Can a PowerBook G4 handle this game?

These are the system requirements of a game I want to get. But can my computer handle this game? I have a standard PowerBook G4 12" running Tiger.
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later
CPU Processor: PowerPC G5 or Intel chipset
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz or faster
    Memory: 512 MB or higher
Hard Disk Space: 3.5 GB free disk space
Video Card (NVidia): GeForce FX 5200 or better
Video Memory (VRam): 64 MB or higher
    Recommended System Requirements:
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
CPU Processor: PowerPC G5 or Intel chipset
CPU Speed: 2.0 GHz or faster
    Video RAM: 128 MB
Do you think the standard PowerBook G4 12" could handle this game? The only things my computer doesn't meet are the CPU speed and the CPU chip set (I'm a G4 at 1.5 GHz). Thanks.

    Hi College Caleb,
I think the game will run on your system, although it might be slow sometimes:
    http://forums.civfanatics.com/archive/index.php/t-176229.html
There's a patch out now from the makers of the game that apparently fixed the sound issues on all systems. Furthermore, even people running Civ IV on dual 2.5 GHz G5s have been experiencing performance issues. Probably they will come up with another patch to make it run more smoothly on all systems. I think I'll give it a try on my PB G4 soon.
    Good luck.

  • PowerBook not freezing and not starting!

    Hey guys and gals,
Recently I was using my powerbook and it started to slow down, unfortunately I was leaving a class so I just closed it and when I got home I opened it and it was frozen on the last screen. I tried restarting it but it would just go to a grey screen. I used my home pc to check out the support forums and tried to restart while simultaneously pressing on the shift-option-control buttons. Which rebooted somethign but I am not sure what. PMC maybe? This helped to restart it and get to my desktop but now my computer will work for a while but then starts to slow down again and eventually freezes. What is going on? There were no warning signs for this, everything had been working fine. I still have plenty of space available on my hard drive so I don't think it would be a lack of space. Any guesses or solutions?
    Much appreciated.
    Jon

    Jon:
    Try b>Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Sel<ect your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but <b>Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Please post back with results.

  • How can I re-install OS X on a PowerBook when the DVD drive is dead?

I'm trying to reload my operating system on a PowerBook with the disk drive dead.
I've tried starting the the laptop as a target disk and plugging it into my Mac Pro and using the disk drive from the Mac Pro. It loads everything on the PowerBook fine. I can restart the Mac Pro using the PowerBook as the startup drive and it looks good, but when I try and restart the laptop by itself, it can't see the start up drive. Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure Apple still has replacement system disc sets for older Macs like a PowerBook available -- various consumer protection laws generally require that manufacturers maintain replacement part stocks for a "reasonable" amount of time but eventually those stocks will run out. Plus, a lot of PowerBooks can barely run Tiger, much less Leopard, making a $129 retail disc a potentially poor investment for a 5 or more year old one.
If the system discs are not available from Apple, if it was my PB I would look for used discs sets, keeping in mind whatever rights I still had for any OS version I still owned. EBay is a possible source for such things but a local Apple user group is probably a better one….
