My PowerBook 17 inch g4 1.5 ghz will not start up.

I have tried everything,I had a disk image of os x 10.5
And opened disk utility and tried to restore my computer to the os x 10.5 from 10.4
And restarted the computer and when it turned on I got the grey apple screen and below is the search icon that every Mac has,but it never starts up it just keeps going in a circle?
I don't know if I fried my hard drive? Can I do anything at this point?
I can't get to any other screen??
Please help

What you need to do is:
1. Do Not Panic Yet.
2. Obtain a Physical copy of the 10.5 or 10.4 Install/Repair Disc.
3. Insert the Disc into the drive and Startup the machine holding the C key.
There are three possible things that could have happened.
You could have messed something up in the whole "restore process"
Your Hard Drive is dying
Your Logic Board is failing
So... If the CD does not boot up or even load, It is the Logic Board
If the CD boots Up, Run DiskUtility to diagnose a failing HD
IF both are fine, then install or repair the Installation of OS X.

    hello everyone,
I am having boot up problems on my imac 27-inch.
I pressed the power button and press and held the Option key, I chose the
Recovery disk, but the Recovery disk did not start, instead I have the grey Apple logo and it keeps running but will not start.
The imac 27-inch was bought refurbished in late 2010
I also have imac apple care from 2010 never used. First time problem.
On pressing the Option key during startup,
Mach Hard disk and Recovery Disk 10.9 is displayed.
Choosing mac hard disk does not boot up the OS instead I get a big Zero sign with line through it or a big flash question mark sign.
Choosing the Recovery Disk 10.9 does not boot up Disk Utility, instead I get the grey Apple logo.
    Please help. Thanks.

Your Recovery HD is damaged. You may be able to repair it using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4. Under the Windowm menu select Disk Center. Select your boot volume from the list. Click on the Recovery HD tab then click on the Create a Recovery volume for this disk. Select Mavericks from the dropdown menu labeled "Recovery HD version to be applied." See if that works. If it does not then see Update - Create Lion RecoveryHD Partition Quickly Without Reinstalling | brunerd. Or see Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 – Updated for Mavericks ...

I purchased my Mac this past month on 11/20/13 so i do not have a problem with it being an older version. Please help. This is my first computer so i dont have any experience on how to fix this.

You can't install the App Store version of Mavericks because your model needs a special version. If you ever need to reinstall it, boot into Recovery.

  • MacBook Pro 15 inch Will Not Start

If I shut down or attempt a restart on my MBP 15 inch (Tiger) it will not start or restart. Instead I hear a whirring sound and then the oval light comes on and remains on as a solid light bu the screen is dark. If I wait several hours or overnight it usually will then start or restart.
Apple Care says send it off to them for ten days but is there an easier solution? Thanks for any advice.

check the battery info.. >about this mac>more info>system report and select "power" on the lefthand column.  How many cycles? What does it say about the condition? etc.

  • Powerbook froze and now will not start up

Maybe she decided that she was retiring but this is what happened.
I was using my Powerbook G4 800 DVI, left to get a snack, came back a few min. later, and the screen was locked up on the last page in Safari I was viewing. No track pad, no keyboard, nothing. Held the power button down till she powered off. Now it will not boot at all. Battery is nearly full, as seen on the lights on the battery.
So I opened the keyboard, and nothing seemed out of place. I removed the 2 ram chips, as I was thinking maybe they got bumped. Replaced them, still no boot, nothing, will not even try.
That was odd, but I let it sit for about 10 min, came back, still no boot, but when I went to get the ram chips out again, they were quite hot. Nothing spectacular, but it puzzled me as they were no that hot when I first forced power-off, but now the computer had been off for at least 15-20 min, and they seemed hotter than earlier. They cooled down quickly when I removed them, but I argued with myself that it could have been residual heat from the other components. So I let it sit for 30 more min, when all the components were cool, then I reinstalled the battery and ram, and tried to boot, noting, but the ram chips were definitely hot. Why would power be going through them when not booted? Short circuit? Failed ram? No matter the combination of chips, ( I have 2x512 MB) only one, in top, bottom, both in, put the bott. on top, nothing. They still got hot and no boot...
I have done a PMU reset found here, with no results
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
The only other odd point is when I have it plugged into the wall charger, everything gets warm, much like it is processing data. The heat sinks for the CPU, and even the bott. of the case, away from the battery get warm, much like it is actually working. I have never noticed that before, but maybe I missed it? I do not think that the CPU should be getting hot while it is charging, powered off, as no fans will kick in.
I know this is long, and I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.
We have a mac store that is certified in repairs, (not a true apple store) and I trust them s we do all of our business computers through them, but I cannot get it to them till Monday. Also, so I don’t have too much sticker shock, what it is the typical service rate? (Ballpark is fine, just going to do some cost comparisons)
One more also. Lets assume my mobo/ram whatever, crapped out, and I want to get the data off the HD, what will be the best method. What if my HD crapped out, can I salvage anything?
    Again, thanks
    Spinner

    Hi spinner,
Start by trying to boot from your install disc. What are the results?
Data: if HD has died, only recourse is data recovery service, hundreds of dollars. If HD is ok, you may be able to boot into FireWire Target Disk Mode and recover your data, otherwise, you can remove the HD and install it in an external enclosure (for 2.5" HD, $50 or so; I'd recommend a FireWire or FW/USB2 model so you can boot a Mac from it in the future, and because in real world use, FW is actually faster than USB2) and connect it to any Mac to access your data.

  • MBP15 1.83 GHz Will Not Boot With 3GB Upgrade

I'm trying to increase my MBP's ram to the 3GB limit. This is a 1.83 GHz 15" model.
It will not boot with 2GB & 1GB sticks of identical mfg & specs. It will boot with one or the other...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Stradioti

    Hi
according to the Apple specs for the 1.83GHz mbp's - 2Gig of memory is the limit......
512MB (single SODIMM) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory on 1.83GHz configuration; and 1GB (single SODIMM) on 2.0GHz configuration; two SODIMM slots support up to 2GB
    Crucial Memory says the same.

  • PowerBook will not start up

Okay, so my Powerbook recently had a heart attack on me.
I was working on my PBook, when I was prompted to update to the latest verion of Java. I accepted the update and everything went well. Later that evening I went to put in a cd into the optical drive and it wouldnt accept it. As in, it didnt register that a disk was being put in. I restarted my PBook to find that the start up would make the start up noise, and then went to the grey screen with the apple in the centre. At this point, the system completely stops, gets stuck, does not make any "thinking" noises, and will not go past that screen.
I looked for help in the support section, and I have attempted starting up in safe mode, to no avail (it just stays at the grey screen). I reset the PRAM, and nothing occurred. I then attempted to reset the PMU, and still, nothing (it will start up without or with the power adapter). Following that, I tried putting the startup disk in, but the cd drive still isnt working. Finally, I tried to start up in single-user mode, but it just tells me that...
'Extension "com.apple.driver.KeyLargoATA" has no active kernal dependency.
Firewire (OHCI) Apply ID 31 built-in now active, GUID 000d93ff fe47d2b2; max speed s800'
and then gets stuck, without letting me use the prompt to run a hard disk check. However, the Firewire bit, doesnt always appear.
    Any help?

Okay, I tried to boot into safe mode again, but this time held the shift key for longer. After the computer ran through all of the 'thinking' noises, it immediately shut itself off. The power adapter was plugged in at the time, so it isn't just that the batter was low.
    Any other suggestions?

It was a gift to my son from his gramma as he loved to play on it. however now will not fully start.
When you power on you here the startup  tone thena white screen with the apple in the center, it will not go any farther.

  • 17" Powerbook G4 1.67 GHZ - Will not turn on after power surge !!!

This is showing no signs of life after a power surge. Here is what I have done so far:
    AC Adapter - Test OK
DC IN Board - Test OK
    PRAM Battery - Test OK
There is power getting to the logic board, but absolutely NO response when you press the power button. I have tried the oh so famous PMU reset and zero response. The AC adapter glows amber, and no chimes or beeps. Has anyone had the same experience or could steer me in the right direction. I am very fearful it is the logic board, any sugestions?

You might want to take it to a repair shop. Something similar happened to me, but the repair shop took care of it in a few days. (The only things I lost were all the apple loops in GarageBand, but that's fixed too.)

  • Leopard will not start up on PowerBook G4 - 1500ghz

I used the DVD to install Leopard 10.5 on my nearly 2 year old PowerBook G4-12" with 1500 ghz ram and 100 gb HD- I had 16 gb free when installing-- it took about an hour, but afterwards I get the Apple screen, then it goes to a blue screen and stays there an hour-- I will let it try overnight now but don't expect it to work...
I now have the DVD stuck in the PowerBook -- cannot start up via an external FireWire drive (Tiger 10.4.11 backed up 100% via SuperDuper-- but what good is it if my PB is essentially "Frozen"
    HELP!!
    Steve Schulte
    Monday 24 December 2007

Thanks for the fast and super reply! The "holding down the mouse key" worked first time like a charm!! The LEOPARD DVD ejected asap.
And no My PBG4-12" does not have 1500 gHz of RAM-- too late when I wrote that-- it is a PBG4 running at 1500 MHz with 2.0 GHz of RAM.
My major problem now is that I don't seem to be able to install 10.5 LEOPARD on any of my computers. I tried first on my trusty G4-733 via target disk mode and although everything went smoothly, it would not boot in 10.5-- the same problem as above -- the MAC APPLE comes up in gray, then the BLUE screen which hangs for 1 hour, 2 hours, then I gave up. I reinstalled TIGER on that machine, thinking since it did not have 867 MHz it was just too slow.
So I am very disappointed that my PBG4 with 1500 MHz and a DVD player built-in and 2 GHz of RAM etc. gives the same story...
SO I am now reinstalling TIGER 10.4 from my original DVD. I will then either retry LEOPARD (after testing the re-install from SuperDuper)-- but will first likely make a second full TIGER backup "to be sure"!
My goal is to install LEOPARD onto my MacBook (May 2006 "Core Duo") and the only reason I'm trying with the other computers is to test it before I make the move-- I usually wait up to a year before moving to an upgrade system-- this time I want to go sooner-- but when I can't even get Leopard to load... I'm not too impressed.
So any hints or references or people with similar experiences really appreciated!
And note: The FireWire connected Hard Drives do not show when I start-up with the TIGER DVD in place, just the 10.5 system (which of course won't start) and the TIGER DVD.
    Again, thanks very much!
Best regards, Steve Tuesday 25 December 2007

  • My powerbook will not start! please help! could be due to thermal paste?

I was recently reinstalling the keyboard within my 17' Al Powerbook. Afterwards, the computer booted fine and worked for maybe less than an hour, and then, on a reboot, shut down abruptly before OS X was finished loading. I restarted and was able to log in for several minutes. Now, upon opening the system, I noticed while replacing the RAM door I missed the slot it should fit into and it was put into place below this (which apparently is right over the CPU)...and when I pulled this part out there was some thermal paste along the edge. Looking into this area with a flashlight, the thermal paste seems sort of messy and some is in front of the chip rather than directly on it.
How likely is it that lack/messiness of paste is what is causing this? The battery fully charges within the system and the AC light is on. When I attempt to boot the machine, you can hear the HD, fans, and Superdrive spin for a second but you never see anything on screen.
Another thing that maybe the problem - when reinstalling the keyboard i forgot to replace the adhesive seperating the keyboard mount area and screws from the logic board - the first time the system shut down, I brushed my hand across the newly installed keyboard and the system shut right down. I'm not sure if this caused the overheating CPU to shut down, or if this caused the keyboard to contact with the logic board and I shorted it out and need a new one. I've since replaced this adhesive insulation plastic and the system still won't boot.
Any help would be appreciated. Please leave suggestions. I don't want to lose my mac

  • Older 17-inch iMac will not start?

Aside from an older 24-inch iMac, I also have an early 17-inch iMac that has been left on for over a year.  Recent power outage occurred while away from home, and upon returning, am unable to start it back up.  Have disconnected/reconnected power cable from unit, from wall, and held down power button for 15 to 30 seconds with nothing happening.
Any ideas as to what else I might try would be helpful.  Thank you!

Have you tried zapping the PRAM?

  • PowerBook Will Not Start (Flashing Planet Attack)

    Hello,
So my PowerBook is having trouble. I became frustrated with it and it's been sitting for a month or so, but here is my problem: I start up and get a light blue/grey screen with an icon of the world flashing in the center of the screen. This icon then changes to a question mark. After this is finished, I then get a black screen with a prompt that says:
+"etc/master.passwd: No such file or director+
    -sh-2.05b#"
This just happened upon start-up one day. There were no symptoms (apparent to me) leading up to this. It just went kaput and I can't seem to find any documentation as to what exactly is going on here. I have contemplated trying to reinstall OS X, but I have a lot of important work on the hard drive. Any help or advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Jonathan:
You do not give us any specs on your PB G4. Please include the processor speed in your profile, as it is helpful to us as we attempt to diagnose your issue and suggest possible solutions.
The flashing question mark indicates that your computer cannot find a bootable volume. From your description of how this came about, it is most likely a failed internal HDD. I suggest that you boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer and run all tests in a loop by holding down Ctrl + L during the tests. Let is run for a while as it sometimes takes hours for intermittent issues to appear.
As I suggested earlier, your HDD has probably failed. The solution is to replace it with a new HDD.

    powerbook does not start

Are you talking about a MacBook? That is what this forum is for. If you really have a PowerBook you'll want to post your question here.
If on the other hand you have a MacBook, can you give us some more details? Like does anything happen when you press the power button? If so, describe what goes on on the screen. If not, have you tried resetting the System Management Controller?
    Best of luck.
