My powerbook g4 dosent turn on

my powerbool g4 does not turn on. i press the start button the chime noise plays but the screen goes blue anf it has a ffile /face but notuhing else.. what can i do

Hi,
What model G4 PowerBook do you have? Sounds like your OS got corrupted.. This is similar to a stalled screen where the machine happily boots up until it gets to the blue screen an just sits there. Before you do an archive/restore.. restart your powerbook and then boot into single user mode(This would be OPTION+S).
Once you are booted into single user mode, type: /sbin/fsck -fy - this tries to detect and fix any problems with the root drive. If there are problems, it will attempt to fix it. Try to boot into OS X again. If you still can't and continue to get the blue screen, but nothing else.. its time to take out your install disc and archive/restore.
Don't forget to check mark preserve home folder and network settings, otherwise you will lose everything,

I own an old PowerBook G3 that turns o only on battery. And, even so, always resets time and date. Whenever I connect the power cable, it turns off. In addition, I a interested in refurbishing my old G3. And, a lesser old G4 LCD that shows a yellow vertical hair-width stripe.
    Thank you in advance.

What model PowerBook? The internal PRAM battery has discharged and is not recharging. You'll need to replace the battery. This site has instructions. http://www.ifixit.com/Browse/PowerBook
The PRAM battery is not easy to change on some PB G3 models. I changed the battery on a Wallstreet model. Had to totally disassemble to do it. Bought the replacement battery on eBay.

  • Powerbook won't turn on

    Hi,
I've just replaced the hard drive in my 12" G4 Powerbook (640mb RAM with SuperDrive) after a complete drive failure. It took some time to but the procedure I found was thorough and I took my time. Turned it on and got the Apple folder icon. Nice. Thought that it had gone back together AOK at this stage. Then I went to install leopard on the new drive. I powered it off and then on again and inserted the DVD expecting to be able to run through the installer. This is where I'm having problems.
I can hear it turn on BUT there is no "dong" sound at all that you should get with the first few seconds of it turning on normally. I've also tried reseting the power PMU as per Apple support article and still nothing. I know its working at some level as the ring on the power connector goes from green to amber upon plugging it in, so I know the battery is charging.
Now its stuck and I also can't eject my Leopard DVD.....
Any idea's on command sequences or other things to try to bring it back from the dead?
    Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
    HI Don,
To eject a disc using firmware:
    Restart the computer.
When you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F keys. (The Command key has an Apple on it.)
Release the keys when you see a white welcome screen.
    At the prompt, type:
    eject cd
Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject the disc, and "ok" appears on the screen when the action is complete.
    Type:
    mac-boot
    Press Return.
Your computer starts up normally and you see the familiar Mac OS X desktop.
If the above doesn't work to eject the disk, reboot while holding down the Trackpad.
As for installing Leopard. Make sure your PBookG4 meets the minimum requirements:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/ Information on the left side of the page.
Also, Leopard requires 9GB of drive space. Make sure you have available space before installing Leopard.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space.
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you to diagnose problems you’re having with your computer.
To start up in safe mode:
Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after your hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.
    What is Safe Mode

  • Powerbook 165 not turning on

No its the Power book 165 the one made in 1992 yes i know its old and I got it to work the screen wire was lose but there is no hard drive in this thing so to make sure the floppy drives works i need a boot disk for it. I dont want to get a hard drive for this thing and then the floppy drive does not work that would be bad because I want be able to load a os. So can you help me find a boot disk image

  • Powerbook chimes when turned on, makes some noise, then nothing

So I went to turn on my powerbook and it made the chime noise, I could hear it start to boot up, and then nothing. The screen is blank, and it does not make any noise. However, it is still on, because I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. I really need my computer for school, so any input is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

    I have the same problem.
I clicked on Firefox to get it started, moved the attached mouse across the screen to click on an icon, and the screen froze. Tried rebooting using standard options but what would happen was:
    the Mac would chime.
I could hear the drive start.
Lights to hubs turn on but not enough juice to turn the light on for the optical mouse.
The keyboard will shut the Mac down.
I have been a Mac user since May, 1984 (still have my 128k)and very seldom have had assistance with problems because I try every option approved.
If I slightly depress the PMU reset button, everything starts up just fine. Can restart. Can switch drives (two external FireWire drives) and full boot will occur.
If I shut down, then restart... back to the chime and nothing else works. t did go into target mode a couple of times - the only "live" action on the keyboard other than the shutdown by the power button.
Someone suggested the PRAM battery (as he called it, the "buffer" battery). After boot, if I don't depress the button all the way, the correct time shows. If I depress it past the "click" point, it will reset to December 1969.
Any help would be appreciated and might solve both issues in this thread.
    thanks,
    lloyd

  • POWERBOOK WILL NOT TURN ON

i got a powerbook from my girlfriend and there had been some issues when she had it. she gave it to me when she got a new computer. i wiped the hd and did a clean install to start fresh. here are the issues i've experienced; the computer freezes up at random times. sometimes when you moved it other times when you were working on a table. i replaced the power supply and just purchased a new battery. the battery that came with the computer works but i thought it would be best to trouble shoot by getting a new one. all of a sudden i can't even turn the computer on. when i press the power button i hear three chimes/rings and the computer never boots up. i tried turning it on with no battery and just the power supply. i tried it with the power supply and no battery still no go. what the heck to i do?? i rest the PMU, removed the memory one by one to see if that might be the problem, still nothing. i checked the trackpad cable to see if it is pinched no signs of damage. i'm not sure if i should spend money on the computer by giving it to a tech or just by something new.
i have not tried the new battery yet but i'm almost positive that is not the problem.
    any help is greatly appreciated

  • Powerbook G4 wont turn on

ok, im a newbie to Macs and i obtained this laptop 2nd hand. i cant get it to turn on regularly. when i hit the power button, sometimes you will here the fans, sometimes the hard drive will spin up, sometimes all you get is the caps lock/num lock light, and rarely it will boot up.
i have it plugged into the wall with the adapter, the battery lights show full charge, i have reset the thingy with the button inder the keyboard...im lost now.
    anyone help me????

you can do a few things that might get it working.
First try SafeBoot. With the machine off hold the shift key down. Turn on the computer and while holding the shift key, see if it boots up to a login or the desk top. If that doesn't work, you may want to try installing a new copy of the OS, of course you will need the install disks. You may be abled to repair the computer by installing a new copy of the OS. That might take care of your problem as long as it isn't hardware related.
    Good luck

  • Powerbook won't turn on past 'uploading OS X' screen.

Hey there, looking desperately for help!
Yesterday I had issues with my computer: it shut down a program I was working on, and wouldn't let me reopen it. I wound up restarting it. Or trying to. When I restarted it, it never went past the blue 'Starting Mac OS X' display, even once the upload bar was full. I've left it to restart for HOURS, but it still doesn't go beyond the OS display.
I've already tried the NVRM and PVRM trick in the troubleshooting, and don't want to risk the PVM trick just yet.
Anyone have ANY clue why it's doing this/how to fix it?

Sounds okay in theory, but wouldn't I need my computer to be ON for this to work?
Insert the disc, press the power button, then hold down the C key after the startup chime and your machine will boot from the DVD. Choose English, then go to the Utilities menu in the menu bar and choose Disk Utility and run your tests and repairs from there. When you're finished, quit DU and the Installer and restart.

  • Really strange: plugging in DVI cable turns off powerbook

So I just bought a new KVM: an Avocent Switchview DVI. 4-port DVI/USB switchbox, very nice.
Problem is, if I plug the (known good) ADC 23" Cinema Display (with ADC->DVI converter) into it, and then plug it into my Powerbook, and then turn on the Powerbook, as soon as the Powerbook detects the external display and starts using it, it (the Powerbook) shuts itself off. If I hot-plug it while the powerbook is on, it detects the display, starts to use it, SHOWS THE 'Are you sure you want to shut down?' DIALOG BOX ON THE CINEMA DISPLAY, and THEN turns off.
It's like the DVI connector has a sensor for the power switch in it, and somehow this KVM is triggering it. (I note that the power button is directly on top of the DVI connector... could this be interference?) It's driving me totally nuts.
And then there's my G4 Cube, which works fine with the cinema display, but just doesn't detect it at all when it's plugged into the KVM. It's like they're trying to drive me crazy or something.

Just in case someone is curious, it appears Apple uses the 'hot swap detect' pin on DVI in a non-standard way, at least according to the admittedly biased manufacturers of my DVI switchbox. If I pull the pin out of the cable, it no longer detects hot swaps, but also doesn't turn off my computer when I hook it up.
Of course, my G4 Cube still doesn't work properly with it, so it's basically a worthless piece of junk to me, but hey, that's what you get when you believe the spec sheets, I guess, right?

  • Powerbook NOT turning on.

    Hi!
    Good day.
My PowerBook is NOT turning on.
I press the ON button, it starts starting up, the Apple appear and the timing icon keeps turning,
then after awhile the screen goes black.
I press the ON switch the same thing happen; again and again.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Try things in Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue. The article says it is for 10.3.9 and down but it still applies to 10.4 systems.
Also, try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. I would try this first.
Let us know what errors DU reports and if it was able to repair them.
    Cheers!

  • Powerbook G4 won't turn on AT ALL

So I have a PowerBook G4 that hasn't started up in about a year. When I press the power button, nothing happens. With the power adaptor plugged in and the battery removed, the light is amber, not green. I've tried two different adaptors, both do the same thing.
I've recently tried to diagnose the problem and everything I have found online leads to two possible problems:
    1. The DC / Sound Board
    2. The logic board
I ordered a new DC board that came in the mail a couple of days ago and the exact same problem is happening. Light on the power adaptor is amber, powerbook won't turn on. This time, however, I noticed the battery started charging when I put it in.
Is there anything else I can check to see why it won't be starting? I've already tried resetting the PMU. I've unplugged the backup battery. I've unplugged the hard drive, the dvd drive, etc etc... The only thing left I can think of is the cable connecting the keyboard to the logic board. How can I test that? I can't figure out how to turn on the computer without this plugged in.
Anyway, this might of course be the logic board, but I don't want to pay to replace it if that's not the problem. Is there a way to check the logic board and test if that is in good condition??
Yikes, sorry about all the questions.

Is there a way to check the logic board and test if that is in good condition??
Yes, if you have the original OS X disks that came with the system, so when it DOES turn on, you can insert the first one, that says AHT Version x.x on the gray disk face, in small print, hold the alt key, choose the Apple hardware test,d and when prompted choose the extended test. However, that of course assumes you can power up the system.
The power circuit only has 4, well maybe 4.5 components .... power adapter, battery, DC-in card, logic board, and some would argue the PRAM battery. By process of elimination, it would point to your logic board, although some would argue you need a working PRAM battery to start the system, which I'm not entirely sure about. However, it's possible there is an issue with the cable attaching the keyboard to the logic board. It's not unusual for it to be tricky to get the cable lined up and inserted correctly into the socket. That cable doesn't have a reputation for breaking or going bad, however.
At this point, you're into substituting parts until the works. You don't say where you're located, however, if you're in the US, you could take it to your local Apple store, and ask them to send it to the Apple Depot for repair. If the case is in good order, it should cost around $350 for them to replace whatever needs replacing to get it into almost new condition. If the case is banged up the price goes up another $300, give or take. That's much cheaper than having them do a repair in the store, which would be ~$750 just for the logic board.

  • PowerBook G4 17in 1.3ghz won't turn on

My Powerbook won't turn on. Before that it was being slow waking up from sleep. I was using it and it frozed, had to force shut down, then it frozed while loading osx and I had to force shut down. After that it won't start. Sometimes I have been able to hear the chime, a couple of times it started up and gor frozed in the login window but most of the times it won't start at all. I changed the ram and nothing happened. The caps key light can be turn on/off. I read about leaving it charging without the battery to charge the backup battery and nothing. The power cord is in green light. Please help I need to work

    Hi n,
    You wrote,
I would just get it replaced. The PRAM battery is not that expensive and should resolve the problem you are having.
The only new PRAM batts for PowerBooks are for the 1.67ghz 17-inch models:
Newer Technology Replacement PRAM/clock battery for PowerBook G4 17" Aluminum 1.67GHz systems
    The OP has a 1.33Ghz
In addition, the battery installation takes a fairly deep teardown that's beyond the typical user. A casual recommendation to replace the battery is not always appropriate unless you probe enough to determine the OP's comfort of opening up a notebook full of tightly-packed tiny parts.
I think he is saying the PRAM battery might be dead.
I, like japamac, don't need a translator. Please don't do this. You did it in the past, were cautioned, and stopped; please stay with "stopped."
