My PowerBook G4 SuperDrive don't burn CDs! Is it coz of dodgy firmware?

Hello there. My name is James. I have a Mac PowerBook G4 Laptop with Mac OSX v10.3.9.
My laptop has been great and trouble free for almost 3 years. But I recently let my little brother borrow it for a couple of weeks, whilst I was away, and now the SuperDrive don't burn discs at all! Not in Titanium, not in Jam or Disk Utility.
I recently got a confession out of him that he installed a firmware off the internet to let him watch multi-region DVDs. A firmware that was not from Apple, some dodgy one off a site.
I'm pretty sure that this is causing my laptop to stop burning discs, but the problem has only really come up, after I updated my OS to 10.3.9 the other day. (I had to wait an age for the update, because I only have dial-up! So I used my mum's broadband.)
So I'm thinking that the firmware he got worked fine for the version I had the OS at before the update, but now I've upgraded, it's stopped it working?
I don't really know, so I'm turning to you guys to see if you could offer any help or advice on how to sort my problem! Disk Utility and the others all come up saying they basically can't write to the drive.
Could anyone provide a link for me to get a proper Apple firmware for my laptop again? Or any help at all would be good
Thank you for your time. Look forward to the replies.
James

Hello, thanks for your replies.
I've been on the firmware site, followed the instructions and installed the right firmware (the proper Apple one for my 12inch)... But my drive still don't work!
It's weird... It was as soon as I updated the OS to 10.3.9.
It's so frustrating... I now have a drive that reads but doesn't burn, and it wasn't even my fault!
I'm still under warranty for my laptop (till April), but that's now buggered is it? All because of my little brother!
Is my only option now to get an external DVD drive and enclosure? .. Kind of detracts from the portablity of my laptop, don't ya think?
Any more help or views, please! Thank you for your time.
James

  • My imac 27 ``- superdrive accepts and burns CDs and DVDs but no program DVDs. Does anybody has the same problem - or an idea for a solution of that problem?

Hello imac-users, my problem is: the superdrive accepts normal CDs, DVDs and is also burning them - for example music from itunes. But today I inserted 2 program DVDs - photoshop elements / Adobe and ms office 2011 for mac - and the superdrive does not accept them. After some seconds of running and noise, the DVDs are ejected - also no icon for the DVD on the desctop. So I think, it has something to do with OS X and not with the superdrive. Does anybody having the same problem - and an idea for a solution?

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • Every time I open Itunes or plug in my Ipod or Ipad I get an error message that the registery settings for burning cds and dvds are missing and to reinstall Itunes.  i've done this several times but the message won't go away.

Every time I plug my Ipod Nano or Ipad 2 into my computer I get the same error message.  It says that registery settings are missing for importing burning cds and dvds due ot other burning software and to untinstall itunes and reinstall Itunes.  I've done this several times and I'm not having any trouble importing cds at all and I can't make the message go away.  It always comes up before Itunes will open.

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

  • Have tried everything in forum and cant burn cds or import them. itunes says to reinstall but doesn't fix problem.

Hi.  I have had a message each time I open Itunes. It has varied but includes the following:
Itunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn cds you must reinstall itunes.
Itunes helper not installed correctly - Error 7
Itunes is not the primary __ for CDs/DVDs. Please reinstall itunes
THE REGISTRY SETTINGS USED BY THE ITUNES DRIVERS FOR IMPORTING AND BURNING CD'S AND DVD'S ARE MISSING. THIS CAN HAPPEN AS A RESULT OF INSTALLING OTHER CD BURNING SOFTWARE. RE-INSTALL ITUNES -
I went through tons of steps that I found online including all of the steps to Fix Gear Drivers.  I did the registery steps, I updated my CD & DVD drivers, I uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes, Bonjour, Quicktime and all else in the long list.
Nothing has helped.  What else can be done?  The message has changed as I have done all of the self-fix steps but it won't let me burn disks still and still get errors.
Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,
FYI, the step that has me add back Upperfilters causes Itunes to no longer recognize the drives so I can't do this step.  I have tried everything listed.

I cross posted also but this forum looks better.
I've had the same problem. I notice that my Superdrive justs looks at the disc for a bit and then spits it out.
When I boot from my clone of my 10.4.10 setup, I can mount and burn a CD-R in iTunes, although the names of the tracks and disc are screwed up (while the actual data is correct).
But in 10.4.11 and Leopard (also testing that on an external drive) the blank disc won't mount at all.

  • Cannot burn CDs-Calibration Error

I get this error when trying to burn CDs from Itunes, "The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." Any suggestions? Is it broken?
    Thanks
    Bill

I have been looking around for an answer for you as well, I did find this post on another board, it may be of some help.
"If you're having trouble burning a CD or DVD, check the following:
Make sure you're trying to burn a CD or DVD from a playlist (a list of songs) that you've created in the iTunes Source list. You can't burn a disc directly from your library, from the Radio, from a shared playlist, or from a playlist that's on your iPod. For more information about creating playlists or a CD, click "Tell me more."
If you're not seeing the songs you expect on a CD or DVD you've burned, or if nothing happens when you click the Burn Disc button, make sure the selected playlist includes the songs you want, and that the songs are checked. Only checked songs are burned to the CD or DVD.
If you want to create an audio CD, make sure you have an Apple CD-RW drive or SuperDrive. Some third-party CD-RW drives may also work with iTunes. To see if iTunes works with an external drive, choose iTunes > Preferences, then click the Burning button. If your drive is listed, it will work with iTunes.
Make sure you've chosen the correct disc format for the files you're trying to burn to your CD or DVD. To create an audio CD, you need to choose Audio CD in the Burning pane of iTunes Preferences. To create a CD with any type of audio file that iTunes supports (MP3, AAC, AIFF, and so on), you need to choose "Data CD or DVD" in the Burning pane of iTunes Preferences. For more information, click "Tell me more."
If your playlist includes songs that were purchased from the iTunes Music Store, you can only burn seven copies of the playlist to an audio CD. You may have exceeded the number of times you can burn this playlist.
If your playlist includes songs that were purchased from the iTunes Music Store that have not been authorized to play on this computer, CD burning stops. To authorize this computer to play the music purchases, double-click the purchased song (where CD burning stopped) and enter the ID and password for the account with which the song was purchased. If you've already authorized five other computers to play the song, you won't be able to play it on this computer until you deauthorize one of the five already authorized computers. For more information about authorization and deauthorization, click "Tell me more."
If your computer or monitor goes to sleep while you're burning a CD, you might encounter problems with the disc or with iTunes. To keep your system from going to sleep when burning CDs, increase the sleep timing settings in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. For more information, search for "saving energy" in Mac Help.
If you've made a CD and it seems to stutter when played back in your external CD-RW drive, try playing it in your internal CD drive or in a stereo system. Some external drives may not play CDs properly.
If your CD burn is unsuccessful and your external drive becomes unresponsive, turn its power off and on to reset the drive.
If you can't eject a blank CD after you've inserted it, click the Eject button in iTunes.
If the playlist you're trying to burn to a CD or DVD includes AAC files, make sure you don't have MP3 CD selected in the Burning pane of iTunes Preferences. You can only burn a playlist that contains AAC files using the Audio CD or Data CD format.
For more troubleshooting information, visit the Apple Support website at www.apple.com/support/itunes.
I strongly suggest a different brand of CD-R disc."

  • Can't burn CDs since upgrading to Tiger

I have a 1GHz powerbook G4 with a combo drive. Before I upgraded to Tiger I could burn CDs no problem. Now, CD-Rs from the very same batch as I used before don't get recognized on the desktop.
    Important facts before you reply:
    1. YES, I have checked that the preferences are properly checked so that the CDs should not be ignored.
    2. Disk Utility can see the disk but says that they are not writable. However, the problem is not with the disk: my husband has a computer that is almost identical (1.5GHz Powerbook with Super Drive) and the same disk shows up fine.
    3. The drive itself is working, in that it can see pre-written disks no problem.
    4. I have already tried completely erasing my hard drive and clean-installing the OS and software. Made absolutely no difference.
    5. I'm running the absolute latest version of the OS.
    6. The details of the drive itself (as lifted from system profiler) are below.
    MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8123:
    Firmware Revision:     CA0T
    Interconnect:     ATAPI
    Burn Support:     Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache:     2048 KB
    Reads DVD:     Yes
    CD-Write:     -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD:     Yes
    Write Strategies:     CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    Media:     No

what I try do do sometimes is I have a Hard drive that I keep Panther on and when I run into problems like that I boot from an external Hard Drive and check it out. If you have access to an external HD that you can boot from or just install the Computers original CD's on it and test it out if that hasn't worked then it could be that the Drive has hardware malfunctions internally and could have broken down as a coincidence of installing OS tiger. I often did this trick when I first got tiger because I was having too many problems with it. I know this is probably not the best answer but I hope it helps you out. let me know of any developments.

  • Error 4000 burning CDs with iTunes 7.1

iTunes checks the disc, then burns 3-4 songs, then cancels the CD burn wasting yet another disc. Also, I cannot backup my purchased songs with the backup feature. Same problems here. I have 2 different computers and tries 2 different CD-Rs and I found out that it has soemthing to do with the new "Protected AAC audio file" format.
Open iTunes, click on music, on the listing side of the screen right click on name, and then click on "kind".
I bet you can't burn anything with the "Protected AAC audio file."
No solutions yet, so just don't buy anything else from iTunes for now.

  • ITunes will no longer rip or burn CDs

When I start iTunes it says "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs, you need to reinstall iTunes."
When I try and reinstall, it says that I have a newer version and it can not complete the install.
I have been burning and importing for over a year, plus buying so I have over 1400 songs.
If i uninstall and start over I'm assuming that I will lose all my songs. don't want that!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

have all the little checkboxes to the left of your songs become unchecked?
if so, Ctrl-click on one of the boxes to do a "global recheck". do you get continuous play again?

  • Can no longer burn cds?

I recently upgraded Itunes and now it says i can't burn cds from my Itunes store purchases.
Why is this please? Does this mean that I can no longer keep copies of my Itunes music on CDs to use on another system?
I would appreciate some enlightenment for this please.

The registry settings used by itunes drivers for importing and burning cds and dvds are missing . This can be a result of installing other cd burning software. Please re-install itunes.

but if you'd prefer to try some quicker and dirtier techniques (that don't involve a registry edit), post back and we can run through those as well.

Thanks for the quick response I went to the device manager and did what you asked and no change in performance, but in the drop-down of the DVD/CD Rom Drive the next file? of HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T2ON ATA DEVICE on the icon there is a pyramid with the yellow exclamation point inside??. I've tried to update the drivers but Microsoft says that they are up to date. It seems that my Windows Media Player does not know or recognize that I have an internal CD burner because on the side box where you are to drag songs to burn, the message of "Connect a burner and restart the player". As you can tell I am not very computer literate so any help will be greatly appreciated. How can I tell if the CD/DVD player is just broken?? Thanks so much.

Thank you in advance for your help!!!!!

I had a very similar problem, error 4251.  (look in your log you will see that error)  Since I finally fixed my problem, I thought I would see if I can help someone else.
What I found is that I lost burn ability in both iTunes AND Windows.  Like you did.  I did some digging and found that this wasn't hardware related at all.  In fact, this boils down to a registry key getting messed up.  (sigh) Yeah.  It causes the system to get a bad 'handle'.
OK, here's what to try.  Go to this Microsoft KB article.  Scroll down and find the *manual* instructions for Vista.  Delete the registry key that it specifies.  Reboot. Now verify that you can burn in Windows.  (If you have a RW disc, do a disc erase, or just try and burn from Windows Media Player.)  If that is working now,  you're on the right track.
Now the issue is that iTunes will still be broken.  Go and install the latest Gear driver.  (I know you may have done it, but do it again.)  Now follow the intructions in this Apple KB article to verify the "GEARAspiWDM" info is back there in the registry.  Now reboot.  Try and burn in iTunes.
    I hope this helps.
