My Powerbook sounds like a clock! Help please.

A few hours ago my Powerbook started clicking like a clock. About every second it clicks. The sound is coming from the rear of the unit, or the rear left, or the bar that connects the main unit to the display; it's hard to tell. It's pretty loud too.
What's going on?
It can't be dying! I have an interview tomorrow and need to finish my presentation.

Ok, now that your done backing up trying running the hardware diagnositc utility that is found on one of the discs that come with the computer. Also if you can tell us when the clicking started what was happening with the computer or if you can cause the clicking to start or stop (determine causality)

Just bought it a couple of days ago, and its doing this!!! why doed the videos now both on my ipod and itunes not have sound?

Your source video file is probably muxed.
Neither QT Pro or iTunes has the ability to successfully encode a muxed video file with audio. You'll end up with video and no audio.
You'll need to use some other third-party software to do the conversion. There's a handful of software available. Just search the forums and you'll find many titles mentioned.
Try MPEG Streamclip.

Powerbook Doesnt Start Up! HELP PLEASE!

Please help my powerbook wont start up! It goes past the gray apple loading screen and then it moves on to a blue screen several minutes later... and never goes passed that point. Any suggestions? Please any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, I just had the exact same experience. It was preceded by about a week of increasingly slow application launch times. I tried putting the machine into firewire target mode - no luck. My DVD drive has been non-functional for about a month now, so couldn't boot off the OS DVD, but I do have a recent bootable backup on an external Firewire drive, so I connected it and booted off that. Ran Alsoft DiskWarrior, and got some very bad news: the hard drive has had a mechanical failure.
Prognosis: not good. Looks like I lost a week's worth of work (date of my most recent backup). The drive appears to be entirely unreadable at this point.

i bought my IMAC recently and it is amazing but there is a continuous clicking sound as if you are holding a key continuously and last forever ...when it happen web pages continue loading again and again .... the mac does not go to sleep..the screen stays on or if you are typing on a page like this one ..the browser do several annoying messages ask you if you want to navigate away from the page.....
one thing i noticed is that the mouse pointer flashes continuously and the same problem happen but with no sound
i found that the only solution is to press the escape key and again and again .... frustrating ..... any ideas or help thnx

Is it a clicking sound coming through the speakers or something like the hard drive making a noise?

I got myself a new iPod Nano 6th gen to replace my quite old iPod touch and my problem is this when adjusting the volume I get about halfway through and even if i continue to increase the volume to full its no louder than halfway up I checked the volume limit and thats full too. The volume level on my old iPod touch is much louder than my nano so Im tempted to return my new nano and just struggle with battery life on my Ipod touch. I know it cant be my headphones either because I invested in some beats by dr dre can anyone help me please?

First of all, "investing" is not the word I would use on Beats.
Secondly, have you looked at:
Volume limit in iTunes
EQ is set correctly
Soundcheck is on/off
Audio leveling is on for the specific song?

Powerbook freeze issue with video (help please)

I've had some difficulty with my Powerbook G4 freezing up while surfing the web. It happens usually when on a website with video, i.e., Youtube, etc. Also, occurs when watching downloaded programs on ITunes.
I ran the hardware test (everything came up clean), I ran the Disk Utility (everything came up clean), and I reinstalled my software bundle. Yet, I still encounter this problem with some frequency.
Just some background: I bought my Powerbook August 2005, I run Mac OS X 10.4.8. It has 1.5 GHz processor and 1GB DDR SDRAM.
Any assistance that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
When you look at about this mac (click blue apple, about this mac), does it show 1GB of memory?
How much free disk space do you have? You want to keep approximately 10% of it unused, for systems usage.
If you bring up your Activity Monitor, on your hard drive in applications/utilities, under system memory, what does it say for page ins/outs? If out's are 10% or greater of ins, then you have a memory constraint for the programs you run. The counts reset when you reboot, so the size of the ins/outs isn't important, rather the relationship is.
Have you looked at your activity monitor when these symptoms come up, to see if anything is causing your CPU to go to 100% usage?
If it were me, considering what you've already done, and disk space and memory considerations were OK, I'd take these additional steps. If you don't have it already, download OnyX from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html
1) Under Unix Utilities, choose the plutil tab and run it for all accounts. This ensures your preference files aren't corrupt.
2) Run all cleaning tasks. Note the next reboot may take slightly longer than normal.
3) Run all maintenance tasks, including complete optimization.
Now if that doesn't fix it, I'd ask if you've noticed this problem since installing 10.4.8, and if so, did you install 10.4.8 via software update? If yes, reinstall using the combo update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html . Sometimes the software update function doesn't update everything correctly, creating odd problems.

Ok, I've had some of the same problems with my imac system and the premature ejecting of my external drives (for whatever reason), and I managed to solve that by setting up the system to put them in "Sleep Mode" when possible. Now however, just this morning, I received the same message along the lines of "A disk has been ejected improperly" yada, yada, yada. The drives were no longer visible on the Desktop and at that time I was busy doing something else, so I put OFF going through the normal unplugging of the firewire cable....etc., then I went on with my business at hand, and within 5 mins, I hear the drives power up and low and behold, the icons reappear on my desktop and everything is fine, and this is without me doing anything. So I'm just wondering that if my original problem, and possibly others' original problem, stemmed from something within OS X? Comments and/or suggestions as to what this may be, what may be causing it, how I can stop it, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the reply...however, I had no problems with these drives AT ALL until the 2nd to the most recent update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. As mentioned in one of my posts here on this thread, I've had this iMac for about 4 years now (the drives I've had longer) and have used these same drives with this same Mac for all of those years, and I've had no problems at all until such time as described above...so I'm not sure what to think about the problem that has developed except that there has maybe been a change in OS X on the way things are handled with external drives. At least this is the way it looks to me now, I'm not trying to state it as FACT, just my observations over the last 4 years has led me to think this way.

Hi all, i am hearing a sound inside my Mac Pro over 2 months before, on both power and battery, not a time specific, i hear a "tictac" sound like Wall Clock Pendulum, beneath the keyboard, i can feel it my hand while typing, it is very clear, could anybody of help please?

Start your MBP with the StartupManager:

You should see two HDD icons. Select the recovery partition (on the right).
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility,
Select Disk Utility>First Aid, and run Verify and then Repair.
This should tell you if there are any issues with the HDD.
Do backup your data if you value it.

I got a new X-Fi Platinum and I am using it with the optical output to my Yamaha-Recei'ver. As far as is know u havent to await any backgorund noise from the optical out, if the source is good. If i hear normal music (no classic, because the admittance is often very quiet), i dont hear any noise - the music is too loud. But if I watch a movie from DvD or have a low admittance *[] then i have to enhance my volume at the receiver (logical)and then i get background noise but no hissing,it sounds like a clock pulse. Most DvDs are low-admitted so i can here the **bleep** clock pulse in nearly every calmness in the movie. What could it be? How can I let it disappear? I dont think thats my receiver because i used a professional sound engineer card from a friend as a test and I had to set volume incredible high before I could hear it.
I posted my problem in many forums but nobody seems to know wtf is happening here! i got that problem with the "Aureaon 5. PCI" too, but i thought that i cant expect perfection from a 25?-soundcard. That was the mainly cause to buy the X-Fi Platinum - but no success ~8 - [
