My Powerbook wont start!

Yesterday i was writing on my powerbook. I closed my "precious 17" " in sleep and put it in my bag. Five minutes later i wanted to write some more, and then it was off. There was much charge at my battery. I also tried to start it again with power, but nothing happens. I hear a little noice in one second whwn im pulling the start button, but thats it! What to do?
My one year warranty was out 14 days ago. (Not funny at all), but in Norway we have a five year buyers warranty. So, shall Apple Store fix this or what. They said I had to pay for it... It will cost a fortune!
Help me! (im apologize for my bad english, hope you understand) Sir Henden

Torgeir,
Welcome to Discrssions!
The first thing I'd would be to run Disk Repair. Boot from your install CD. Once it's done click on the Apple and select Disk Utility. Run Disk Repair to see if it resolves the problem.
If not then reset the PRAM. Here's the instructions.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If that doesn't do it reset the PMU. Here's some more instructions.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq4
Good luck.

  • Help my powerbook wont start

Im having trouble starting my powerbook. When I turn on the computer first I see a folder with the question mark, then a grey screen with a black square in the middle saying that i need to restart my computer. I know its a Kernel panic. I tried to use the disk utility to repair it. It repairs but it still wont start up. I tried re-installing the software and it cant find a drive to install it. I try to turn it on in safe mode and a bunch of information about the kernel appears and at the end it says "panic: We are hanging here. . ." So i dont know what to do. Can someone help me please. Thank you so much.

It could be your ram. Inspect that is in place properly.

  • Help please, my Powerbook wont start after a crash...

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm in absolute panic! My Powerbook crashed after a modem/internet error and wont restart - the little light on the front 'breathes' until you open it and then it goes out when open. The restart/power button when held down will chime, then nothing happens - no restart. No lights or anything. The battery is charging, I've also tried taking the battery off and then restarting but still nothing. Am I not doing something really obvious? Can anyone point to what has happened, or is happening? Is it anything serious? Please help! Many thanks, JP

You could start in Single User Mode and do a File System Check (fsck).
Start the computer and hold down the s key until it starts.... it will be a text based interface. It should happen rather quickly.
After it is done displaying the start-up text.. you can type
    fsck -f
remember the space between the k and the -
    hit Return
you will have to type in your password...
It will check the disk.. and let you know if there were any errors.
If there are.. run the command again until it says "the file system is ok"
    When you are done, type
    reboot
    then hit return
    You computer should reboot.

  • Powerbook wont start up after os 10.4.3 update

I recently installed the new os x update to my powerbook, along with other updates to airport and something else (I don't remember). The first two went fine, but durring the os x update, an error occured. I got a message telling me the file could not be extracted properly, and that I should restart or shut down my computer, so I shut it down and went to class. When I got home, I started it up to do some work and it never went past the white screen with the apple logo on it (that you would normally see at start up). I tried all of the troubleshooting tips in the user manual, imcluding inserting the CD to reformat or repair my harddrive, but the computer didn't even reconize that there was a CD in the drive, and now will not eject it either. Any sugestions? I would like to save my data, if possible, as most of it is only on that laptop. Thanks!

"...inserting the CD to reformat or repair..."
I trust this was the Tiger installer disk for your computer. If so first power down the Mac by holding down the power button. Then restart and hold down the c key. It should boot from the installer disk. Then try Utilities>Disk Utility>Repair Disk. Please report back.

  • HELP! Powerbook wont start up

    Please can someone help me?
My G4 Powerbook will not start up.
After reading the troubleshooting part of the manual I put in installation disc 1 and tried a disc repair and it came back with
    "Invalid B-tree node size
    volume check failed
The volume needs to be repaired"
Even if I try to follow the installation process there is no destination shown in the window of the installer.
Have I lost everything? Please can some body tell me what I need to do?

When I tried repair disc I got
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed
When I tried verify disc I got
The volume needs to be repaired
First aid failed - No valid packages
This is the first problem I've ever had with my mac after 3 and a half years and unfortunately all my current work and photos are on there and they are not backed up!
I have ordered a copy of discwarrior so I'll see how I go. I hope it's straight forward to use as I'm no techy!
    Thanks for your help
    thanks
PS Could you possibly tell me how I could eject the installation disc as it does not respond to the eject button and the icon is not available on the repair/verify disc window?

  • TS1367 my powerbook wont start

I bought a powerbook g4 with no hard drive and no memory i replaced them both. And now when i turn it on i get a solid blue screen and a red circle with a slash through it in the center.I am new to apple computers so can anyone tell me what i can do to resolve this issue.?My g4 is a 1.3 ghz 15 inch ?

A universal installer disks for older versions of Mac OS X were coloured black. Universal installers could be used to install on hardware that supported the version of that installer which had to match. There's nothing wrong with the disks you bought off eBay per se but if they say version 10.3 and nothing else yet the minimum OS that originally came with the hardware you have was 10.3.3 the two don't really match up do they? In which case this mis-match more than likely explains your problem. The situation today has changed from what it was previously as all macs used to come with gray coloured hardware model specific installer disks (CDs or DVDs). I would look on eBay for Panther 10.3.4 or better still the 10.4 (Tiger) installer DVD or even the Tiger set of 4 CDs as any of these should work with your hardware.
I found these which might be better for you?

Whatever you decide don't under any circumstances buy any gray-coloured disks unless they specifically state they are for your hardware model as these won't install properly if at all.

  • G4 PowerBook wont start up

I was prompted to restart my computer and did so. The computer has not gone beyond the initial screen with the gray Apple logo; there is no spinning wheel beneath the logo indicating it is prgressing.
I have tried restarting using control-command-power and that leaves me with a blank gray screen without the Apple logo.
When I shut it down pressing the power button and start it up again, I get the blank screen with the Apple logo.
I have also tried doing the PMU suggestion and have gotten the loud beep, but it has yielded the same results as above.
I have noticed that it takes progressively longer to start up in recent times; don't know if that play a role with this issue.
Please let me know what I should do.
    Thanks

    marc:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If starting up in Safe Mode does not help, try:
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Good luck.

  • Powerbook Doesnt Start Up! HELP PLEASE!

Please help my powerbook wont start up! It goes past the gray apple loading screen and then it moves on to a blue screen several minutes later... and never goes passed that point. Any suggestions? Please any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, I just had the exact same experience. It was preceded by about a week of increasingly slow application launch times. I tried putting the machine into firewire target mode - no luck. My DVD drive has been non-functional for about a month now, so couldn't boot off the OS DVD, but I do have a recent bootable backup on an external Firewire drive, so I connected it and booted off that. Ran Alsoft DiskWarrior, and got some very bad news: the hard drive has had a mechanical failure.
Prognosis: not good. Looks like I lost a week's worth of work (date of my most recent backup). The drive appears to be entirely unreadable at this point.

  • HELP!!! My powerbook g4 wont start up.

HELP!!! My powerbook g4 wont start up. when i press the start button, i hear the start up chime, the screen turn grey with the apple log on it, then the wheel rotates like 3 times and stops but the main screen doesnt come up. sometimes the wheel just rotates continously and nothing happens@

Boot your computer using the install disk (hold the C button while turning on the computer, with the install disk inside). Open Disk Utility and repair the disk and disk permissions.

  • Powerbook wont startup and have no install disks

My powerbook G4 starts up installs lots of extensions until it announces that it is "waiting for Apple file service" and then stops.
I am fairly sure that I didnt get any install disks when i bought it (long time ago now) because all the software was preloaded and I never got round to making one while the machine worked (stupid me). Surely I should be able to get a bootable disk which I can stick in the dvd drive so that I can then run the diagnostic software which is (you guessed it) on the hard drive which wont boot!!!!
My wife has a machine which is a HP running MS Vista which I could use to download and burn a bootable CD/DVD (I think) but I cant find one anywhere on the net.
Please help before she tells me again how great her new computer is and I mournfully glance over again at my dead mac
    Thanks in anticipation

    Welcome To Discussions bunsen x!
Even if you are successful, at resurrecting the PowerBook, you really do need a set of system discs.
If you call Apple Customer Service, you may be able to obtain replacement system discs, for a fee.
Also, If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
    Additional info in these links.
Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here. Note that the date on that form is June 22, 2007, but the program has been extended in the past.
I suggest that if you choose that option, call Apple 1-800-275-2273 and ask if that program is still available.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

  • Help, iTunes wont start

I was using iTunes this morning and it was working fine. I get back this afternoon and when I click on the iTunes logo in my dock, it jumps one time, the arrow appears under it, then the arrows go away and the icon stops jumping. That's it, no error message, no nothing. I attempted to rectify the situation by uninstalling iTunes, then re-downloading it from Apple and installing it. I installed it ok, went to open it and it did the same thing. I moved my iTunes Library, thinking there might be something wrong in there, and it still wont start up. This is the first problem I have had of any kind since I've had this Powerbook, it'll be a year this October. Can anyone help?
    Powerbook G4, 15in 1.67 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Try these steps
But I would start with the standalone quicktime install step within the link below, before you try everything else. Make sure to disable antivirus when installing...

  • Wallstreet wont start

I changed the original 2Gb drive for a 20GB (it would not accept a 40GB one) and installed OSX 2.8( I think) partitioning the drive... well with OSX it simply doesn't work...it wont start.... with 9.2.2 it works ok, not perfect because I have to keep it on sleep mode overnight because if not next morning it takes (or not) a few attempts to start... the question is... how can I change the startup OS (from X to 9) I tried with a CD OS 9 and it wont recognize it i.e. nothing happens!!!
without the CD the chime goes on, but sometimes the screen lights up and 9 starts, then chimes again and OSX fails to start... (what does the chime exactly mean?)
    any help would be appreciated
    Alex

    Alex,
The Wallstreet certainly has its problems with OSX. However, once set up properly, it can be quite useful running OSX.
If you don't mind, I want to ask a lot of questions regarding your Wallstreet and system software to help solve your problems.
    - The startup chime means the powerbook has successfully initialized various components and completed its startup hardware test. Do •NOT• rush the startup at this point; the powerbook then performs a memory test and with 384MB of installed RAM, you will not see any activity for 30-40 seconds, then the display lights up and the 'book looks for a bootable volume. This may be what you are experiencing when you say it takes several attempts to start.
I AM TOTALLY AWARE OF THIS, THE TIME NECESSARY UP TO A MINUTE OR MORE FOR VIDEO TO APPEAR...
    - Do you have a charged main battery in the Wallstreet? If not, do you •always• keep the power adapter connected?
I HAVE BUT I REMOVE FROM TIME TO TIME, I TRIED BOTH WAYS
    - When you try to start the Wallstreet from a cold start ("it takes (or not) a few attempts to start"), what exactly is happening? Do you hear a buzzing when you press the power button? (Similar to earlier question.)
TODAY, AFTER SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS, IT STARTED FINE, OSX RUNNING, SWITCHED TO OS9, RESTARTED, SWITCHED TO OSX, AFTER A WHILE RESTARTED ON OS9...TURNED IT OFF. WHEN I WANTED TO RESTART IT, IT NEVER DID
    - What version MacOS 9 CD do you have? Does it have a white background with a big orange '9' on it? Can you boot to the 9.x CD?
    - Do you have the MacOS X 10.2 Jaguar CD?
    - When updating to 10.2.8, are you sure you installed the correct Combo Update? There is a Server version you should not use.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120244
    - If in fact you installed/updated 10.2.8 using a different procedure, please describe.
    - If you can boot to your installed 9.2.2, have you tried selecting OSX in the Startup Disk control panel, then restarting? (The power manager reset below will help this problem if the PRAM is corrupted since this procedure also resets the PRAM on the Wallstreet.)
    - If you successfully boot to OSX, use the Startup Disk panel in the System Preferences to restart to 9.2.2.
At this point, I would reset the power manager from a cold start, then see what OS it starts up to, if any. After the reset, boot to your 9.x CD, although if you do not have the correct CD, it will not boot. Your Wallstreet requires the keyboard (4 keys) reset procedure. This reset may also allow booting to your 9.x CD and then you can select OS 9.2.2 on your HD as your startup volume.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
I HAVE ALWAYS USED THIS (4 KEYS) RESET PROCEDURE...AND ONCE IN AWHILE IT WILL START...
I TRIED WITH OR WITHOUT THE HDD, AND IT DOESNTMAKE A DIFFERENCE...AT THIS POINT I THINK IT MIGHT BE THE PROCESSOR..
UNFORTUNATELY I DO NOT HAVE ONE HANDY TO SWITCH IT AND TRY THAT....OR COULD IT BE THE POWER MANAGER????
FOR A FEW MONTHS, BEFORE I REPLACED THE HDD IT WAS, ONCE IN A WHILE, HAVING TROUBLE STARTING... AFTER THE (4 KEYS) RESET PROCEDURE, IT ALWAYS STARTED, BUT APPARENTLY IT IS NO LONGER...
THE FUNNY THING IS THAT WHEN IT WORKS, IT WORKS FINE, BUT SOMETIMES IT STARTS AND IS SLOW...SO I DONT THINK ITS HAS ANY CONNECTION TO THE OS X OR OS9 (I HAVE BEEN USING 9 FOR 3YEARS)
DOES ANY OF THIS MAKE SENSE?
    THANKS ALEX

  • PowerBook wont turn on unless I turn it upside down!!!

Ahhhh ok this is annoying!! My powerbook wont work unless I turn it upside down!! When it is right side up..I turn it on and it just comes up with a blank screen. However, if I turn it upside down it works just fine! Once its working ok upside down, I turn it right side up again and it freezes!!!! Any suggestions?? You think something might be loose inside?

I recently had the same problem. It turned out to be my hard drive was in the process of going down the tubes. It had also started making some strange noises. I would definitely back everything up and get it checked out.
