My Powermac g5 makes wierd noises from PSU

My Powermac g5 makes weird noises from PSU is not continuous it does that irregularly could be the PSU Frying or is just the fans going bad ?

I'd say it's most likely the fan going bad, but have you blown the dust out of the PSU lately?

  • Mini Server makes odd noise from speaker!

Anyone else getting a noise from their Mac Mini server speaker that sounds like a file being deleted?
No regular pattern to when it comes, it's unprompted and happens even when no one is logged on to the network.
I have a (used) Mac Mini 2011 with two (new) 1TB drives in RAID 1 and a clean instal of the latest OS X with all updates applied and the server app purchased two weeks ago from the App Store. It's been doing it (more often in the evenings) almost since I set up the server.
    Anyone got any thoughts?

Not so much clicky as just a subtle little buzzing undertone to the ordinary quiet hum of the Mini when the fan's not spun up that makes my brain think "something mechanical needs oiling", IE it's a motory kind of noise like metal moving against metal. (Which I suppose could be the HD spinning on its axel, perhaps, it seems unrelated to any sort of "reading disk now" ticks. Um, yeah, the Mini is probably on the desk a little too close to my right ear that I know what this all sounds like... ) Too, too familiar with HD Clicking Of Death, that was last May's "...THAT ain't right" $300 moment -- I have been backing up religiously since then, believe me! Wouldn't have thought of Disk Utility RE a possible mechanical issue, I'll have a look...

  • Harddrive makes wierd noises

    Hi y'all
I've got a Pro 2012 "13 for quite awhile now. A few weeks ago my harddrive made some scratching/clicking noises. I wasn't aware really of what it was, but a few days ago it did the same thing. I tried a Apple Diagnostic test, while it was testing it make the same noise.
It's a horrendous noise, sounds like something is eating the aluminium from the inside out...
Are my worst fears coming true and what should i do?
p.s. nothing fishy happend to it, only use it for work.

If has plenty of space, make sure that you have a back, preferably 2, Time machine and a clone. (such as Carbon Copy Cloner, which creates a bootable back up.

You HD should not be making much in the way of sounds, especially if near empty, as it fills it must search more to find things. You should take it for evaluation at an Apple store, or an Authorized Apple Service Provider. They say not if your drive will fail, but when.
This seems to be a mechanical thing, not software

  • G5 makes wierd noise

My G5 started making a strange noise about 3 months ago which seems to relate everytime something significant moves on the screen. It is worst whilst the screen saver is on, everytime the image changes the noise happens. The noise only happens whilst something is changing or moving on screen. (It is not one of the 3 noises posted on this site as sound files).
Any help appreciated as my warranty runs out next week.
    Dual 1.8 G5, 2.5G ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   apple cinema display 20"

My G5 has made a noise when things happen since I got it. Every time I restart the thing (which thankfully in OS X is not often) I have to go into the Processor control panel and turn off processor napping. Otherwise if "napping" is left on, it'll make that weird irritating noise whenever I do anything even moderately intensive.
If you don't have the Processor system preference, you'll have to get it via the CHUD tools from apple downloads. During a couple of system updates, the version I had of Processor was disabled.. so it was a struggle to find the most current version of CHUD tools to get a version of Processor that worked with the OS version. It would be much nicer if Apple just included it in its OS updates.

Normal, normal, normal. Don't know the reasoning behind it - I suppose the MBP is trying to load anything that might be in the drive at startup. Had me confused for awhile, way back when...

  • Why do the increase/decrease volume buttons not make a noise when pressed?

My macbook aluminum used to make a noise from the speakers when I pressed the volume up/down buttons on the keyboard. They don't anymore. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

Go into System Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects and turn on the feedback sounds for volume change.

  • Macbook wont start and makes ticking noise

The subject line says it all. My macbook wont start and it makes clicking noises from inside the case, kind of like a watch. The display turns on and the chime goes when it starts, but the screen stays white and nothing happens.

You can run diagnostics from the OSX disc. Insert disc one and while it is booting hold down the d key. This should take you into diagnostics.

  • Iphone 5 makes a rattling noise from day 1, the replacement also makes this similar noise. customer care can provide me with another replacement but can not promise if the new replacement will have this noise or not. can i get a refund ?

my iphone 5 from day one makes a rattling noise when you shake the device.
the replacement i recieved also makes the similar rattling noise, apple calls it a "common problem" and says its the autofocus of the camera which makes the noise, but people i know are not experiencing any such noise in their evices, hence its not their in all the iphone.
honestly investing Rs 45000 in india i dont expect my device to have a stupid defect as this one,
In my latest conversation i have had with a senior representative of apple care iv been given an option to have anpther replacement but they cant promise me that the new replacemnt will have no such rattling noise it might be even worse.
since apple cant promise me a replacement without any such noise and my device is not even 90 days old, and since apple calls it a common problem in iphone5 is it possible that they give me replacement of 5c or 5s and il pay the difference in price or just have a refund ? since they cant provide me with a solution and keeping this device with this defect is not a solution with me.

Sorry if it's over 14 days apple does not refund the device, just sit tight and keep on asking for a device that doesn't rattle, be firm but polite about your position on the matter.
    Politeness works wonders

My macbook pro is probably only 2 months old and there is a buzzing/grinding noise coming from the left side of the laptop every time I open it.  It may buzz 5 times in a span of 30 seconds then not make the noise the remaining time that it is open.  I have read that it may have to do with my fan or HD.  I am under apple care for a good amount of time but am wondering if this is a mjor issue.  I would not be able to get to an apple care center in the near future due to being at school.  Should I be worried or will it last by the time I am home in 2 months.

Sounds like the disk in your MBP is accessing data on wake up
If you are still concerned you can take it into the Apple Store where they can hear it to be sure

  • My Core 2 Duo iMac Makes a wierd Noise and odd Ram Availability.

I Bought this iMac from mac connection.
    A 17inch 2GHz Core 2 Duo.
The first one I returned because of dead pixels.
The Second one, Which Iuse has been great. But for the Past Month, I noticed a weird clicking noise from the speakers. I tried wiping out the HD and reinstalling the OS, I checked the Ram, I performed maintenence progrmas I have, different set of external speakes, headphones, I only can reduce the sound of it if I max out the Volume on the computer.
I would make a light click noise If I opened front row, opened a program, Booting up before coming to the desktop. I would make one click each time anyone of those things opened. ((((Allmost like a click sound of Static)))))))
I love the computer overall but this is an annoyance and I fear something could be wrong with the sound card. I don't know if an update to the drivers or future firmwire update would do anything.
    Anyone have an idea??
I do't beleive I can return it to Mac Connection since I'm onto my second iMac with them, any issues, I have to work with apple now.
It also does the noice whn I adjust the Volume, Almost like static. I fear of a faulty sound card for some reason.
Before, It used to show out of the 1GB of Ram, that there were 820 plus to 750.
Right now, I only have Mspace running, Thispage, and iTunes And Theres only 186 Mbs of ram left free. Is the Ram Zapped or what.
On the iStat pro Widget. It shows 177 MB Free Active and 844MB used.
    I worried about this

I do now about the the Use of Virtual Ram via Hard Drive. I did learn that The Ram still stays pending to open progams faster.
But see this. When I first Bout this computer, I would have abbout 750 to over 800+ MB free. Last 4 weeks, I still have the same programs installed and Now I start up with 620MB. Sometimes having iTunes open, This web page, my amail page, iPhoto, I Ram availability goies as low is 62 MB which is very low, considering having 1GB of Ram.
I see you have a similar iMac as I do, If you have a ram monitor widget. How much ram does your system start out with.
First Few Weeks it would have about 800MB, Now, ever sinnce I discovered that clicking noise out of the speakers when I nagigate the apps, thats wh I discovered the system starting with 620MB. I don't have different programs from before.
I don't feel good about this that with so few programs, even having light weight programs running, so much ram is used.
Just like Right now. I only have this page running, I only have 288 MB free. I understand what you said but I don't beleive so much ram should be out of place like that with this amount of ram.
Heck Even my 12 1.2GHZ iBook G4 with 768MB has more free ram with the same running apps.
Does anyone have any idea of my clicking problem?

  • RAM and GPU ultrahot and extreme noise from Z400

Dear All, I just bought this machine, got rid of the 4 GB of RAM already installed in it and bought 24 GB of Corsair RAM (the only result coming up on their website when using Z400 as a query) for it.The system runs really well, except for how incredibly loud the case fan is, and that the RAM measure 70-80 degrees C (Celsius!!!) in the BIOS. GPU (Nvidia Quadro 295) I measure to 60-70 C in Hwmonitor. I can at least remove one of the two graphics cards, which could help a bit.For the CPU, mobo and HDD, all temps are good = no more than 40 C.How is this possible?I´m wondering if I did right by putting all the nearby cables "inside" of the airflow guide when putting it back on after installing the RAM. The ones from the PSU would have to be there anyway since the PSU is next to it.Is it possible that I have pulled up the power cable for another chassis fan? The one on the backside is indeed spinning.Let it be said that there are about 10 cms till where the wall is from the backside of the PC, and the temp in the room is around 30 C at the moment. This of course makes things hot, but such hot GPU and RAM when system is doing nothing is not normal, and the case fan making such noise trying to cool at (running at about 2200 RPM) shouldn´t be necessary I suppose.I upgraded the BIOS and I see that the fan is at the lowest setting. Moving it up REALLY makes it noise. Thanks in advance!

Jazz, With HWMonitor, the free version, from CPUID.com you can see the RAM stick's individual temps due to having an internal thermisitor built into each stick.  Mine in this souped up xw6600 are running currently about 70C, and the ambient air here measured by HWMonitor vit its "TMPIN2" listing is 19C.  Cool morning.... There are 3 other measured temps at the top in HWMonitor termed Motherboard, CPU, and TMPIN3.  Those also are thermisitor readings, but those thermisitors are part of the motherboards, and I've never been able to figure out exactly where they are located.  The only one that is built in to a cable is that ambient air one, which in the case of the xw4600 and probably your Z400 is zip tied to the front case metal grill, and for the xw6400/xw6600/etc. is integrated into the shrink wrap of the front I/O cable.  It is in the front view pic of the metal case of the xw4600 Ghetto Mod post just barely visible as a black device seen through the second square hole near the top left of the fan, located just above the fan plastic outside edge.  It gets accurate ambient air info in that position. Do me the favor of looking in this forum for "ghetto mod" because I just re-loaded all the pictures that got lost when HP ported our business workstation forum over to this new location.  The Ghetto Mod search will get you to my two main posts on this, and the one you really want to review is that for the xw4000/Z400 series, but the other has some good added info. I'm starting to think that your Corsair in-stick memory thermisitor readings may be interpreted incorrectly by HWMonitor, and you may wish to contact Corsair to find a utility that they know to work properly with the thermisitors they embed in their sticks. Some added info from prior work:  The official front card guide/fan holder for the xw4600, xw4500, xw4400 and perhaps your Z400 could hold a 92x92x25mm fan, and its part number is 325092-001.  Here is what it looks like, and below are views from the top, then bottom.  This particular part is one of 3 fan holders that came in a kit from HP that included a 92mm PWM front fan (kit was option part number DY648A).  I cannot confirm that this will work in the Z400, but all those cases are very much alike, and you can see if the appropriate holes are in your front metal when comparing to my pics from the xw4600:   Finally, there appears to be a newer version of the fan holder for the Z400 and perhaps the Z420 which likely has the same attachment tabs as the old one, 604781-003, and also look under -002 and -001.  This newer part may be directly available with proper fan from HP.  View from top, and the new projection to the right would cover the speaker.  The fan sits behind the card holder slots you see, and I never use the video/PCI card extensions that need to be added to engage in those slots:

  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw makes horrible noise and will not move past initializing

Makes horrible noise and will not move past initializing.

    Hi @HealthITLadyRed,
I read your post and see that the printer is making noise and is stuck initializing. I would really like to be able to help you resolve this issue.
I have provided some steps to try to see if we can resolve this issue.
Check and remove any packaging material inside the printer and toner.
Disconnect the USB/Network/FAX and power the printer on Standalone.
Do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
If the issue persists, perform a power drain by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer and keeping the power button pressed for 30 seconds and in case of a power switch keep the switch in ON position for 30 seconds before reconnecting the power chord.
Update the printer's firmware by a USB connection. Software and Drivers.
Select Option 2 and wait for the page to load and then select the link for firmware. This resolved the previous posters issue.
I can send a private message with another step to try.
In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)
What happened prior to this issue? (paper jam, changed toner) Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Is this a new printer?

  • Clicking noise from back left of MBP -- speaker maybe?

    Hi all,
I have a clicking noise coming from the back left of my MBP and I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem, has any suggestions, or knows if it is potentially bad.
I saw the long thread about a 'pop' noise here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1234166&tstart=0
... but I'm not 100% sure mine is related.
I looked at some MBP take apart guides and see that the hard drive is in the front left, but my click seems to be coming from the back left (if I put my ear on the front left I can hear the hard drive spinning and all, but the click doesn't seem to come from it). I tried the hdapm suggestion in that thread just for kicks, but nothing happened, so overall I don't think it's the hard drive.
The only moving part in the back left as far as I can tell is the left fan, but I checked the fan speed with smcFanControl, and they were both at 2k (normal speeds). Plus, it doesn't sound like something I would expect a fan to make, but I could be wrong. The click happens in bursts usually, clicking about once every 5 seconds (it seems pretty consistent) for a while, but then has long periods without clicking. It doesn't seem to click more or less depending on computer usage. I would think that if it were a fan noise, it would click a lot more often (every 1/2000 seconds! ;>), and I don't see why it would come in and out in?
I'm wondering if it might be a periodic pop from the speaker. It happens when the volume is down & muted, though, so that seems somewhat odd. If it is the speaker, I don't think it has anything to do with interference, as it will make the noise when the computer is on battery power, with nothing plugged in, far from any electronics.
Overall, I'm pretty confused, so any advice would be great. At the moment, taking it into an Apple Store won't really work for me :/ I used to have a PowerBook & a G5, but I sold both of them when I bought my MBP, and this is my only computer. I have a NAS that I've backed up all my data to -- so I'm not really concerned about losing stuff if something dies -- but I need my MBP for work, so I can't live without it for a week or so if they need to hold onto it. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be happening?
    Thanks!
    -Tyler

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I didn't read all of that long thread, but I have heard of the type of noise you describe being associated with the hard drive. Whether it's benign or ominous or something else entirely is hard to say. But there are a couple of little utilities that can help you evaluate your hard drive:
    S.M.A.R.T. Reporter:
    http://www.corecode.at/smartreporter/
    S.M.A.R.T. Utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
The former will monitor the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive and install a beautiful icon in your menu bar. The icon will be green if the S.M.A.R.T. status is verified and red if it is failing. It is designed to give you a heads up if it detects hard drive problems.
S.M.A.R.T. Utility is not supported on all hard drives, but if it is, it will allow you to see various factors which determine the S.M.A.R.T. status and if there are problems with any of them. This can also give you early warning of hard drive failure.
Also, there have been some problems with one model of Seagate drive, so check and see if you have a Seagate.
My Fujitsu drive is absolutely silent, and that is what you should expect. My external La Cie makes clicking noises every so often, and always has, so I think that is normal for it.
The main thing to worry about is the hard drive.
Do you have the widget iStatPro? It might be better for monitoring the fan speed without using smc fan control. But if the left fan is at 2000 RPM, then I would expect a very rapid click, which does not sound like it's the case here.
One last thing--does the click vary with the volume? Does it get louder if the volume is turned up high and quieter if the volume is turned down low? If the click has to do with the speaker, then I might expect the click to be louder or quieter depending on how the speaker volume is set.
It may be worth taking it to the Apple Store just to let someone listen to it and give an opinion. If you are under warranty, at least get a case number to document the problem. I understand that you can't be without your Mac for a week or so, but if a problem is diagnosed that does need to be fixed, then you can work on getting the work scheduled for a time that is convenient to you. It may even be possible to arrange for a loaner with all your stuff cloned onto it. Knowledge is power, and will give you better options than, say, having a sudden hard drive crash.
    Good luck!
