My PowerPC G4 Tower is on OS 10.5.8 and keeps freezing up

I have repaired the disks and it still freezes up... I got the error report pasted below when I turned it back on this morning.. does anyone know what this means? Desperate for assistance.... thank you in advance!

Those reports are hard to read but, when the "backstrace" part starts with a bunch of hex code:
0x00000000 0x00818704 0x0081890C 0x00818F3C 0x00819138 0x0035CED0

that can point to bad or incompatible RAM. Have yo uadded/changed RAM recently?
Is the ZIP external? If so, disconnect it and test for a while without it. As a matter of fact, get rid of everything external including printers--leave only the keyboard, mouse and monitor, and see it stability returns. This line:
com.apple.driver.AppleUSBOHCI(3.4.6)@0x815000->0x822fff
hints at something unhappy of the USB bus and it could be a peripheral. Are you running a PCI card to give you USB 2.0?

  • Performance boost from Dual 1.8 PowerPC G5 tower to a 2.4 Intel MBP?

It's time for a computer upgrade but I wanted to make sure this is going to make things faster for me. I'm currently working with a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 tower with 7gb of ram and wanting to invest in a MBP (mid-ranged model, 2.4 - model that was released just before this current release)
I'm just wondering if this is going to make things faster for me. I'm a graphic designer and use CS3 programs like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign regularly. So I occasionally have to open multiple hi-res images at the same time. I'm hoping to not have significant lag times with this or the dreaded beachball.
My job has shifted since I bought my DP 1.8 mac and I now travel a lot more so I need something more portable. My thinking for work when I'm in town would be to have the lid of the MBP closed and connect it to my 30" Apple Cinema display.
My concern is that I may not notice a speed increase. If I go with this MBP, is the concensus that I will be able to work similarly or better than my DP 1.8 now? I'm open to adding more RAM if that's necessary as well.
    Thanks in advance!

Big MaCanadian seemed to be more concerned that performance might actually be no better or worse, Ewen.
With CS2 there were certainly some major problems with Photoshop on Intels, but from what I can see CS3 (while not as good as it should be) will almost certainly give Big MaC at least equal performance, and probably a useful boost, when compared with his 1.8 G5 Dual...
... One test does not a summer make (and, as others have pointed out, maximum memory will be an issue in some circumstances) , but by and large , with CS3, an Intel Mac will easily beat a G5 Mac with similar processor speed, all other things being equal. All things aren't equal here, of course, but I very much doubt that BigMac will be disappointed with the speed of a 2.4 SantaRosa Core2Duo MBP when compared with his old 1.8 G5 Dual.
    Cheers

I have read your post, Rod. I just think you don't have a decent third-party Mac enthusiast site speed test comparison and some of your facts are wrong.
Going to the first major point, you in fact seem to be agreeing with us that the MB Pro may not be offering a vast preformance increase: +but from what I can see CS3 (while not as good as it should be) will almost certainly give Big MaC at least equal performance...+ . I think it will be a bit faster too, maybe even twice as fast in certain tasks as indicated by the comparison you made with the higher end Intel desktop system, but that isn't an out-of-this-world improvement imo.
Second point, +an Intel Mac will easily beat a G5 Mac with similar processor speed+ is a little erroneous as to my understanding due to the different architecture of PPC and Intel chips you shouldn't be directly comparing on the basis of clock speed and then suggesting that system are comparative if these are equal.
CS3 works fine with Intel Mac, but an issue many of us have is the disappointment that it hasn't been optimized at all for the latest Intel Macs.
(point 2 is also I believe idiosyncratically called the Megaherts myth, link to a Wiki article to bring you up to speed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megahertz_myth , and also http://www.asia.apple.com/g4/myth/)

G5 tower chimes after switch on, fans start and then it switches off, all in about 5 seconds.  Does anyone know how to get this mac started?

Use Compressed Air to blow it out good, LCS was the Liquid Cooling System on the last/fastest G5s.

  • Why does my G4 Tower keep freezing

Using Tiger and Panther my g4 tower has continued to freeze more and more frequently. The freezing occurs at random moments, independent of anything I'm doing and affects the whole computer, not just the mouse and keyboard...everything freezes! I have tried clean re-installing the OS a few times and it still comes back. I also regularly use the program Applejack in single user mode, which seemed to reduce the freezing but now it has come back with equal and ever-increasing voracity! The computer was purchased in 2002. Surely there has to be a way to cure this. Does anyone know what it is, other than a really annoying disease!
    Any suggestions more than welcome.

    heyup
    to answer your questions...
There is about 50GB free space left on the 80GB hard drive.
    General info
    Machine model - PowerMac3.6
    CPU type - PowerPC G4(2.1)
    Number of CPUs - 2
    L2 Cache(per CPU) - 256KB
    L3 Cache (per CPU) - 1MB
    Memory - 512 MB
    Bus peed - 167Mhz
    Boot ROM version - 4.4.8f2
I guess this info in the list specifies the variant.
I'm not sure how to test how much RAM is being used at a particular moment but it's not like it's freezing during heavy processes - it's only being used for word processing at the mo.
    Hope you can help furtherly

  • IMac PowerPC G5 10.4.7 1.8ghz 1GB RAM keeps freezing

I hope someone my be able to give me some advice.
I went from an old black powerbook G3 bronze that I had had for years and had the usual motherboard issues toward the end of its life to an Imac G5 PowerPC, which I was very lucky to get some help with as I am a disabled student. Unfortunately, this meant that I was not allowed to buy it direct from apple and get applecare, and had to have it from a preferred supplier (in March 2005) with their own "support" - they are not mac specialists by any stretch of the imagination! The imac has always had a habit of freezing regularly, the drive would suddenly start spinning really loudly, the cpu would shoot up to 100% and the whole system would freeze. This happens whether I am running Word, Excel, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, Mail, iCal or Addressbook. The support guy said it was nothing out of the ordinary and I just accepted that at the time, but a friend of mine recently came round to give me some mac tips and had the system freeze on him 3 times in an hour - he felt it was some kind of error made when the software was originally loaded by the preferred supplier, but the iMac is now out of their 12 month guarantee.
We ran disc utility from the installation disc to verify and repair the hard drive and erased the partition that had been installed on the hard drive by the supplier (pre-loaded with the software, so they didn't have to do too much when their disabled clients screwed up their computers, one of the support guys told me), did a full erase of the hard drive and then a clean install using the original discs that came with the computer, but still have the same problem.
Can anyone please offer some advice on what the issue might be?
    Thanks!
    2005 iMac PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.8 Ghz 1 GB Ram, PowerMac8,1
    1.8 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1GB RAM, PowerMac8,1 CPU type PowerPC G5 (3.0)

    Christopher Mayled-
I am glad that you found the advice helpful. I had the same problem with my iMac and it *****. However, you did get your computer repaired and that is the bottom line.
We have three Dell laptops in the house, all covered by the infamous battery recall. Nobody from Dell has bothered to contact us yet. We have received no information in the mail. All three laptops were properly registered. I found out about the recall through the press.
I once had a stroller recalled by Toys R Us. I found out abput it by walking into a TRU and seeing the flyer hanging up on the bulletin board.
My guess is that if some of the recalled units fall through the cracks and do not get repaired then the company doing the recall saves some money. It isn't right but apparently it is what happens. Probably because of sheer numbers more than anything this happens but how do I know?
    Luck-

  • Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 beachballing and then freezing at random intervals

My computer at work has been beachballing and then freezing at random intervals for the past week or so.
What happens is that all processes stop. The cursor is still responsive for a while, and then the application I'm in, regardless of what it is, “beachballs.”
Occasionally I'm able to wait it out and the computer becomes usable again and other times it just freezes. Then I can't force quit so I have to do a hard power cycle and then start up again. This happens every day, at least 4 times a day.
I've been keeping the system.log open to look for any tell-tale issues and noticed that during every crash I get the following information:
    3 kernel[0] disk)s3: data underrun
    3 kernel[0]
and it repeats until the computer becomes responsive again or I decide to do a hard power cycle.
In addition, I checked the System Profiler diagnostics area and found this:
     Last Run:    11/8/10 1:05 PM
      Result:    Failed
      Failure type:    Memory
      Memory slots:    DIMM6/J43, DIMM7/J44
So…I switched out the offending bars and switched them for 1 GB bars and this problem was solved.
The diagnostics result for the Power On Self-Test:
    Last Run: 11/10/10 6:21 PM
    Result: Passed
However…I'm still experiencing beachballing and freezing problems with the same severity and frequency.
    Help!

So, to clarify: do you suggest I use Disk Utility first to see if any problems are uncovered? Or should I use TechTool Deluxe instead and test the RAM with Memtest?
My two cents would be use Disk Utility first. If you don't have the install disk handy, you can do the same thing with single-user mode. See this link for details: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
You have to run it from single user mode (start with command-S keys held down until you get a Unix terminal screen.
You can also run memtest from single-user mode, though I do not remember the command syntax offhand. Looking at an AppleJack log, though, I see the following command line entry that was used to run memtest on a three-pass check
    */usr/local/sbin/memtest all 3 -L*
Running memtest from single-user mode tests more of the RAM because little is occupied by the BSD kernel.
A snip of the terminal output running memtest:
    Test sequence 1 of 3:
    Stuck Address : ok
    Random Value : ok
    Compare XOR : ok
    Compare SUB : ok
    Compare MUL : ok
    Compare DIV : ok
    Compare OR : ok
    Compare AND : ok
    Sequential Increment: ok
    Solid Bits : ok
    Block Sequential : ok
    Checkerboard : ok
    Bit Spread : ok
    Bit Flip : ok
    Walking Ones : ok
    Walking Zeroes : ok
Somewhat thorough, though no test is completely bulletproof.

  • How do I find out what's eating up my hard drive space?

I installed Leopard quite a while back on my 1,8 GHz PowerPC G5 tower. I had to try twice and call Apple support because I was having problems installing it. I never seem to have much hard drive space, and I don't really have much on this computer. My iTunes library takes up a bit of room, but there's really not much else on the hard drive. I cleaned out some old stuff tonight and made some room, but I am wondering how much of my space is eaten up by the previous OS. Also wondering if Leopard is on here twice because of the double install attempt.
I am trying to make room to install Logic Express 8. So where are the OS's on here so I can trash anything extraneous, and is there a way -- other than individually Apple I'ing everything -- to see what's taking up so much space on my hard drive. As you can probably tell, I'm not the most computer literate person. Thanks.

Try a program such as Disk Inventory X or OmniDiskSweeper.

  • Transferring information from G4 tower to Pro

I have a G4 tower w/ 3 hard drives named Macintosh HD, 60GB Hard Drive and Main HD. The 1st came w/ the computer - the 2nd is on top of the 1st. The third is an ATA drive running off of a Sonnet Temp ATA133 adapter card. In starting up the Pro wanted to transfer information from Main HD as that is my current startup disk on G4. In doing the firewire connection to transfer info - only the Macintosh HD showed up. Called Apple support - was told to unplug the Macintosh HD and the 60GB and then try again - they left me hanging. Didn't work it said no OS X.5 on the disk. Called back again - this time the person told me to just pull out the ATA drive and install in one of the other bays on the Pro - and it should work fine - again "no OS X.5". Put back into old G4 - started up like a charm - using 10.5.8. Hope this makes sense and someone has suggestions - as I really don't want to go through all the personal info, and internet connections etc. again. ~bruce.

In order to access an ATA drive via TDM the ATA drive must be set as the MASTER. TDM will not see a SLAVE drive. If you reset the jumpers on the drive to make it a MASTER while removing the other two drives you should then be able to access it via TDM.
You can install an ATA drive in a Mac Pro using the optical drive bus, although I am not sure if the newest Mac Pros have an ATA bus now. It may now be replaced with a SATA bus. However, an ATA drive cannot be installed in any of the Mac Pro's SATA slots.
You could also try networking the two computers and transferring your data via Ethernet. You need only move your personal data since you cannot use any PPC-only code on the Mac Pro. It would also be simpler to just reinstall your third-party software to be sure everything gets to the right place. Also see:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)

  • WRT54g on Mac PowerPC G5. Not Working.

    Hey Guys n Gals;
Running Comcast Business Class in my restaurant. I have a Mac Pro PowerPC G5 tower running OSX: 10.5.8. The Comcast guy hooked everything up along with the WRT54g i found in the basement (previous owner). Everything worked well, he programed the router through his internet pad; never touched my Mac.  All of a sudden my power outlet in which my modem and router are connected reset themselves. I reset them back on, however, my router Never worked again. My mac is directly connected to my modem, not router. I have it hooked up on LAN #4 (light turns on), however, after the outlet reset, the router wont even show up on my Modem's LAN. I cant open it open it on my browser, 192.168.0.1, or 1.1. I try the 30-30-30 reset, nothing. While looking for my own remedy, i think i downloaded the new firmware to my mac, nothing happened. Any IDEAS??? Please, need wifi!
    Thanks in advance.
    Uriel

Here is the bit confusion, modem is connected on which slot of the Router? Here is the connectivity first of all connect the Comcast modem to the Router on the Internet port and then connect the computer with any one of the Ethernet port of the Router [Numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4] then the light status on the Router as well as check the IP address…
You can find your IP address from the Mac System Preferences:
From the Apple menu pull down “System Preferences”
Click on the “Network” preference pane
Your IP address will be visible to the right
Let me know what information that you get in that window….

  • Illustrator CS4 lags on Intel Mac but not PowerPC

From what I can tell the lag only occurs when selecting an object in a project. Once I select any object there is about a 5 second delay where the beachball will spin until finally the object is selected. Also, about 50% of the time the selected object will jump across the screen after it is selected. It happens in any file, new or old, and with any size file from very complex to new documents with just one line in it. There are zero problems on my old PowerPC G5 tower but any time I use Illustrator on either my old MacBook with a Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz or my brand new MacBook Pro i7 2.3 Ghz it happens. I have found that using a selection box eleminates the problem but the fact remains there is a problem that needs to be resolved. It makes Illustrator almost unusable - any help would be VERY appreciated.
    Thanks for the time.

So I ended up formatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS X and all CS 4. This fixed the lag problems I had for about a week, then suddenly today I created a new document, threw a few lines in and BAM! The same thing started happening again - every file, new or old is lagging again. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!
EDIT: Here's a video of what is happening. Note, after selecting the line you can see the blue endpoints of the line but it takes several seconds for the selection box to appear around the line. The beachball is also not showing up in the screencast.

  • Installed snow leopard, now my pro tower is very slow!

I am having some issues on my Quad Core Mac Pro Tower.
Thought it was Bad Ram (Even though i am running 8 GBs) but did a test using a program called "Memory" and all seems to be fine. I thought it might be the ram since multitasking is a nightmare, things slow to a serious halt and it has become extremely disruptive. I find myself restarting almost anytime I want to use the computer.
It seems almost every app I use is affected, safari 4, QuickTime, even finder, when I will select a folder, say applications, it will take nearly 30-60 seconds for them to show up.
I hope this gets resolved asap, don t know how much I can get done at this pace....

    Rember and Memtest I assume.
If I were you, I'd do a clean install and try that, then gradually install your applications and test things out.
Sounds like you may have issues with the file system (did you run Disk Warrior ahead of time?) or incompatible applications (and no, SL doesn't know everything to look for).
Migrating from a G5 to a Mac Pro can often bring it to a crawl for instance.
Are you still needing to run anything under Rosetta to execute PowerPC code?
Did you boot from SL DVD and repair your drive? if you do/did, it will "prepare" your drive for SL that it can't do if you do an upgrade-in-place. Best to format a drive with a new OS if possible.
And make sure your system drive is half empty even.

  • A Gift Mac Pro Tower - But there are problems

I was given a Mac Pro Tower (No manual, box or anything, just the computer) that is a few years old, but was jazzed up with 8 GB memory and 2 x2.66ghz Dual - Core Intel Xeon Processors.  It is running 10. 6 OS.  It is obviously out of warranty, so I can't take it to the shop and expect them to fix it.
I am very confused about wireless modems or running a modem connected with a phone cord to the computer.  When I connected the DSL modem I used on my G4 to the Mac Pro, it runs for a few minutes and then freezes the computer, asking me to restart it. The last time there was an error message saying "panic from CPU 2" (or something like it.) No one I have called has given me a straight answer.  The computer also runs hot and I have to keep my space at 64 degrees to keep the computer genrerally happy.  ATT my internet provider (@#%^#&z) has either tried to see me a new modem or new "services", even though my computer shows it already has a modem and is wireless modem capable.  In fact, I can reveal my neighbors connections in the upper right hand pull down icon.  Shouldn't I be able to log into ATT's internet service wirelessly since they have  said I'm paying for it?
So if someone can explain what I need to do, need to buy, or not need to buy I'd be grateful.

Not all network equipment that worked with PowerPC worked with newer Intel Macs like yours.
And ISP will need to go through an activation page probably.
I switched recently from DSL when I found out the people that took over from the old company, would not work with two different Netgear ADSL modems anymore; nor would they work with Windows 8 (maybe just the activation script but seemed too much for me).
I had an old cable modem, switched to cable, but that would not work (bought in 2002) with their new equipment, but for $5/month I was fine (and get phone service through their modem) along with 24Mb service.
I went through a couple routers to get better wireless (the first cheaper unit really was not satisfactory and again felt it was worth the upgrade).
I recommend you contact Apple and for a small fee, once they check the hardware serial number on it (one reason to never ever post such ser no online btw) they can send out the OEM replacement DVD so you can at least run Apple Hardware Test.
with all the people here, you should still get great use from your new tower Mac Pro.
