My presario b1900 only boots normally when a screen lid closed

Hi im a compaq presario b1900 user and suddenly started to have a booting problem since i mistakenly closed the laptop lid in full while booting and opened it up right after.
Then, my laptop only boots perfectly when the lid is almost closed under rougly 30 degrees - whenever i switch on my laptop with the screen lid open, it shuts down after 2 secs and automatically reboots, but then shuts down again ,and on and on.
But after once it goes into window, it works perfectly with the lid open and works well as log-on and off at standby mode.
It only shows a problem when booting after powered on.
is it because my HDD got damaged from a sudden screen lid close??
Or should i change HDD or is it a window issue??

Thank you so much for replying; unfortunately, my screen had already gone gray by the time I read your reply and I had to take in to the Genius Bar. My laptop's up and running, but the main problem is still unknown and I'll have to buy a new one soon. Thanks again!

  • PowerMac G5 will ONLY boot up when the side panel is removed

    Hi,
We have a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5GHZ . This mac will ONLY boot up when the side panel and the clear plastic panel are removed. If the Mac is assembled, the Mac will start and Chime, but thats it. No display and the fans are dead quite. Any Suggestions? Thanks in advance

Hi, I realised that this problem has ONLY occured AFTER I installed Leopard. I then reformated the hard drive and installed 10.34 ( the OS that came with the G5) and it is as good as gold. I then reformated the hard drive and installed Leopard. After a few minutes the G5 became noisy and unstable. I then reformatted the hard drive AGAIN and reinstalled 10.34 and it stable. How can I install Leopard without the machine behaving erratic? Thanks for any advice in advance

  • My laptop L2000 lance Armstrong only boots to a black screen with a cursor.

My laptop only boots to a black screen with a cursor. Can this be because the board numbers may be different then whats on the HD? I swaped a HD from a old and ugly L2000 to a new and shiny looking laptop!   dbarselow

Boot from the first of the system discs (by holding down the C key until the welcome screen goes away) and, in Disc Utility, repair privileges. Not just permissions, but privileges. Then reboot at normal. That will probably fix it.

  • Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only Boots to a black screen with a mouse cursor

Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only Boots to  a black screen with a mouse cursor after I installed Mcafee Internet Security.
Hi I installed 1of 3 McAfee Internet Security protections on my HP laptop a few weeks ago with no issues. I Have a Dell XPS 420 desk top with Windows Vista operating
system, it’s never had any issues, until 2 nights ago I installed McAfee Internet Security (detected incompatible files and will remove) pc now only boots up to a black screen with a mouse cursor, it will show the windows logo and a hash symbol floating around
the screen. Now 2 weeks ago I installed the same program on my Dell all in one desk top with Windows 7, the same issue happen but that pc has no screen activity, I tried a back to factory reboot on this one, still black screen.

    Hi,
Please install the compatible version of McAfee Internet Security:
    http://home.mcafee.com/store/internet-security
if you have startup issue, you can boot into Safe Mode to uninstall the problematic software to go back into Windows.

  • K9n2 sli platinum will only boot/post when running single channel

    Hey
I am having problems with the rig when i want memory to run Dual channel.
I have tried all bios settings (or at least i think so) and all memory slot combination (or at least i think so) without any luck.
When i put 2 sticks in dimm 1+2 I get nothing but a black screen.
When I then turn my pc off, putting 1 stick in dimm 1 it will boot and I get the message: DQS training failed on previous boot.
    Mainboard: MSI K9N2 Sli platinum
CPU: AMD 5600X2 Windsor 2x1mb cache
HD: have tried with WD 250gb and hitachi 160gb sata2
Psu: Have tried with OCZ 500W and corsair 620W
Memory: Have tried with kingston pc5400 and Adata pc6400 both 1gb sticks
GFX: Have tried with GF8800GTS, ATI 1800XT and GF8500GT
    CPU cooler: CM Gemini2
Motherboard have BIOS 3.1 ( so there should be no problem with running the cpu)
everything except for mainboard have been testet with other gear and is working 100%
Memory passed memtest with no errors.
    Some facts
    1 stick in dimm 1 = boot/post single channel
1 stick in dimm 2 = black screen.
    1 stick in dimm 3 = boot/post single channel
1 stick in dimm 4 = black screen
    1 stick in dimm 1 + 2 = black screen.
    1 stick in dimm 1 + 3 = boot/post single channel
    1 stck in dimm 2 + 4 black screen
    1 stckk in dimm  3 + 4 black screen.
    1 stick in 1 + 4 = Boot/postor black screen..cant remember but for sure not dual.
    1 stick in 2 + 3 = boot/post or black screen..cant remember but for sure not dual

Have you tried taking the board out of the case and setting up outside on a flat anti-static surface? Maybe there is something shorting the back of the board where the DIMM slot is.
    If no change:
Leave just one memory stick in 1st DIMM close to CPU socket,
ensure that system is stable the flash to the latest BIOS ==>

  • I'm only booting to the gray screen...help!

There's something going on, when I turn my computer on, it only boots the the gray apple screen with a progress wheel, no further. I cannot get it to boot in safe mode, and my problem is worse because my optical drive hasn't worked in a long time (I've been using an external drive), so I can't reinstall the software.
    Thoughts?
    Powerbook G4 12   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Friends with Tigger and andylambert17.
From your desciptions it sounds like both PowerBooks are suffering from an internal hard drive failure of some kind.
There are commonly two kinds of drive failures - either related to a directory corruption or mechanical failure. If it is due to directory corruption then there is a reasonable chance that DiskWarrior might be able to fix it.
However if it is mechanical failure then the only option is to replace the drive. There will have been previous warning symptoms like unusual noises, sluggish performance, problems accessing files/applications or startup issues.
Data recovery, if required, might be possible with Data Rescue or via an expensive professional data recovery service.
If feasible it will be a good idea to run the Apple Hardware Test - but, of course, a working optical drive is needed.
On the other hand, if you have a cloned, bootable, backup on an external FireWire drive then try restarting from that. Or if you have access to another FW-equipped Mac then you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode. You can then test the internal drive using Disk Utility. Look out for the SMART status at the bottom of the DU window. If it says anything other than "Verified" then the drive is in trouble.

  • Thinkpad X220: bad wlan connection when docked and lid closed

    Dear forum
I use a Lenovo ThinkPad X220. I have no trouble with the wlan connection when i use the notebook alone. The wlan connection is also stable when i use the notebook plugged in the dockingstation with the lid open. But when I use the notebook plugged in the dockingstation with the lid closed my wlan connection drops regularely to about 2 Mbps and gets very unstable.
The ThinkPad uses the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wlan network controller:
    $ lspci | grep 6205
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)
The network controller uses the iwlwifi driver, that comes with the current linux-firmware package:
    $ pacman -Ss linux-firmware
    core/linux-firmware 20150206.17657c3-1 [Installiert]
    Firmware files for Linux
I didn't change any options of the kernel module, everything runs in default mode:
    $ modinfo -p iwlwifi
swcrypto:using crypto in software (default 0 [hardware]) (int)
11n_disable:disable 11n functionality, bitmap: 1: full, 2: disable agg TX, 4: disable agg RX, 8 enable agg TX (uint)

    bt_coex_active:enable wifi/bt co-exist (default: enable) (bool)
    led_mode:0=system default, 1=On(RF On)/Off(RF Off), 2=blinking, 3=Off (default: 0) (int)
power_save:enable WiFi power management (default: disable) (bool)
    power_level:default power save level (range from 1 - 5, default: 1) (int)
fw_monitor:firmware monitor - to debug FW (default: false - needs lots of memory) (bool)
At first I thought, the problem could be caused by the KDE power saving settings. I changed the settings, so nothing happens when I close the lid (no hibbernation or screen lock or something like that), but without success (the wlan connection is still unstable under the described circumstances).
Also dmesg shows nothing that points out a problem (as far as I can see):

how about checking both your wired and wireless nic drivers in device manager to make sure that the "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox on the power management tab is deselected.

  • Computer does not put itself to sleep when used in lid-closed mode

Hi. I'm having a small problem when using my macbook pro with the LED display, lid closed and with external keyboard and mouse. If I leave the computer unattended, the display goes to sleep at the time specified in system settings under energy saver. The computer, however, does not go to sleep - the white power indicator remains solid and noises for new email etc can still be heard.
I should probably just try to remember to put it to sleep manually but I keep forgetting. Does anybody know what settings I need to adjust?

I tried cycling the old battery many times, and the computer would still shut down unexpectedly instead of going to sleep when it ran out of power. I got a free replacement from the supplier [http://myworld.ebay.com/cbkusaelectronics>, but I have cycled this new battery twice now, and it still does not go to sleep when it runs out of power. The capacity of the battery is fine (4.9 Ah), and the timing calibration seems fine as well. I have two older batteries from NewerTech and they allow sleep every time, so I think my computer is fine. Can anyone enlighten me about the cause of this problem? Does my battery lack some 'sleep battery' cell in it for use after the other 4 cells discharge? Or does my battery lack a chip that communicates with the computer? Is there any hope of getting this battery to support sleep when discharged?
Has anyone else seen this problem consistently in a brand of battery? Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper battery that does not exhibit this problem? I have been happy with NewerTech, but they cost over $130.
(I only paid $44 plus $10 shipping, so I probably got what I paid for. It is maybe still worth it to have a high capacity battery for such a low cost, but I can't rely upon it in those last few minutes or I may lose work.)

  • G5 only boots up when monitor is unplugged?

Well hopefully someone can help? My G5 only will boot up and operate if I unplug the monitor. After it boots up I plug in the monitor everything works fine? If I try to re-start it with the monitor plugged in I it just powers up, hard drive spins, no chime, and then the fans will gradually speed up to cool the tower.
    Any help would be appreciated
I discovered this by trying to eliminate hardware, to narrow it down. You can turn on the computer with the monitor (the glowing power light on the right of the screen) but that is about it.

    What monitor?
    What video card?
Does it power up in safe boot ok? (Sounds like it wouldn't, since you say no boot tone, but always something to try.)
How about a hot restart? Does it still stall there?
Battery age? More than a couple of years old and some weird stuff can start happening.
Does it boot into open firmware? (holding down cmd-option-O-F keys at power on) If it does that with the monitor on, then try the following two commands:
    *reset-nvram <cr>*
    *reset-all <r>*
and see if that helps. (You could even do that "blind" if you are a careful typist.)

  • Macbook only boots to a blue screen!!

This problem started today. I used software update to install updates of quicktime and itunes. After the restart all im seeing now is a blue screen and the white box in the middle. The bar in the middle doesnt start to load and now im seeing the rainbow colored spinning circle. I've turned it off by pressing the power button and the same thing. Macbook actually started acting up ever since I used file sharing from my imac G5 to trasnfer appleworks to my laptop. Appleworks was working fine for a few days. Then about 2 days ago appleworks would not start, several applications froze, applications started running slower. I also had to type in my password twice to log on. The first time i type in my password the screen turns blue for an instant then goes back to the log in page, and i have to type in the password again. Now I can turn it on but its frozen

did you try starting like this:
Press Option-Command-P-R until you hear two beeps.
Did you try starting up from the MacOS DVD?
If that works fine, its a software problem on your machine.
Start up from the DVD (holding down the c key at start up)
Then, dont start the sftware install, but go to the tools menu and choose disk-utilities and try repairing permission and the do a disk repair start up disk, while your at it.
After that, can you then (re)start from your computer in safe mode. Press Shift during startup to start up in Safe Boot mode and temporarily disable login items.
If you succed, its there is some software conflict in your configuration.
de-install any third party software you dont REALLY need. Eg extra widgets, wifi-scanners etc, auto-updaters, gmail-notifiers, virus scanning, what ever.
Trash all non-needed preferences from the folder yourhome/library/preferences.
    then make a normal restart.
I would also reinstall the latest apple OS updater 10.4.8, but the stand alone installer, called the combo:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
You had a G5 right? that is a powerpc non-intel..
Well if its not a software problem, apple care will take care of you...
    ..good luck...peter

  • MBP Won't sleep when the screen/lid closes...

I have had my MBP for almost a year now and my AppleCare is about to expire...
Recently when I close the screen the computer will continue to run and operate as if it was never closed and will not sleep. I took it to the Apple store and they did an SMC reset which sorta helped for about 5 hours. Now it goes to sleep but will take almost a minute at times or won't sleep at all. I was told I would have to send my computer out for a couple weeks but I can't do without a computer. Please help me fix this or help me convince Apple to give me a new computer.

Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid and try and put it to sleep.
If no dice open the lid and look at the Console messages - in particular look for lines including "sleepimage" and see what it says ?
I suspect there's not enough space left on your hard drive, or it badly fragmented, and the RAM sleep image can't be created or stored properly ...

  • MacBook Pro keeps shutting down when the screen is closed

Hi, I have a 2011 15inch MacBook Pro and it keeps shutting down rather than sleeping when I shut the screen. It also shuts down when left for short periods of time rather than sleeping. I have updated it yesterday and still the problem happens. I also installed a virus check to see if that was the problem and it didnt find anything it could fix! Any help is much appreciated!!!

Try a SMC reset.  That may correct the situation.

  • Reboot when plugged in & lid closed?

my Mid 2012 rMBP reboots continuously when plugged in and the lid is closed - Any idea on how to fix?

    ricks99,
When your Droid 1 started rebooting while charging, did you happen to add any new apps to the phone.
First, place your Droid 1 in safe mode. Once it's in safe mode, plug it in again, is it still automatically rebooting again?
If it doesn't reboot that's a good thing because we know that an app isn't causing it to reboot.
If it does reboot while in safe mode, then there is an app on the phone that is causing it to behave in this manner.
If it reboots while in safe mode, you should remove the most recently added apps to see if that makes a difference.
As a last resort you can do the hard reset. Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications..
You can save your contacts to the SD card by following these steps.
Please do follow up to let us know if your Droid works in safe mode or not before you end up doing the hard reset.
